The only time I visited the Commissary was in Dec '69. Just back from 3.5 yrs in South East Asia. On 4/24/26 I made my second visit. And I was amazed at the selections I could choose from! If you have the credentials to shop at Moffett Commissary, you won't forget your experience. Food is about 20% less than you'll spend at any box store including large shopping clubs. Service is outstanding. Staff is friendly and always available to help. Bring your own bags. You do need the proper credentials and shopping is reserved for current / reserve or retired military / disabled veterans. The only reason they're at 4 stars instead of 5, is the store is on the smaller side and selections are somewhat limited. By comparison, Travis Commissary is enormous with a lot more choices but otherwise, great place to pick up your weekly groceries. read more

With prices what they are local this store is a go to when in the area. A dated building does not mean substandard service or selections. I would rather have friendly staff and a good food selection over higher prices and a new building. I've been shopping at this Commissary since 1981 and this Commissary under the current management is outstanding. Over the last 4 years the store has undergone a pruning of poor selling items contributing to an exceptionally well organized store. I do like the one way arrows as they facilitate a safe & organized flow for shoppers and stocker personnel alike. The meat and fruit vegetable departments are the best ever on par with specialty retailers. The paid staff and baggers are exemplary in their customer service. A shout out to Paul for keeping the outside area neat & tidy to facilitate convenience & safety for all. The exterior definitely needs a face life, but the commissary serves its purpose. There is a good selection of items here so you'll probably find most things that you'll need. The store was pretty empty when I visited in the middle of a day on a weekday, but I'm not sure what the crowd is like during prime shopping hours. Bathrooms are available here. read more

Due to a new program I was notified that, due to being a disabled veteran, I was eligible to shop at the commissary. Moffett is the closest to me and I could get on base with just my CDL so decided to check it out. I read some of the reviews on Yelp so wasn't sure exactly what to expect. I was quite surprised. Granted, the building exterior makes it look like a derelict but the interior was clean and organized. I was able to find 99% of the items I went in for and was very pleased with the prices. I was really amazed at how much I saved on meat and poultry. And, despite other reviews, I found the meat selection to be outstanding. The only thing that kept me from giving this place a 5 star rating was my interactions with our cashier. I interacted with several employees and they were very helpful and polite. However, when we brought our purchases up to the register the cashier proved to be very rude and dismissive. This being my first time dealing with a commissary in almost 50 years I had a few questions. She cut me off during my questions and didn't provide any helpful information. AWARENESS: In January of 2020, the Purple Heart and Disabled Veterans Equal Access Act of 2018 (H.R. 5467) went to effect, allowing ALL veterans with a service connected disability to shop (in person), at ALL commissary, exchange / PX and to utilize the MWR facilities on ALL military installations. Because of COVID-19 and other issues which arouse because of it. I wasn't able to revisit my old base and home of four years until September. NARRATIVE: When COVID restrictions finally eased up. I was able to make my first trip in several years to re-visit my old base in Mountain View and to shop at the commissary at the now, Moffett Field Federal Airfield. SCENE: Located directly across the street from historic Hanger 1, the commissary was still just as I remembered it, very small. Inside you'll find narrow isles with items packed shelf to shelf but, they did refurbish their meats and fresh vegetables area. Also as I remembered were the bargain prices without the sales taxes and the, never seen before or hardly ever seen items that you can only find overseas. EVIDENCE: The commissary at Moffett Field is nothing fancy or flashy but, to me, it's hollowed ground. Just being able to re-visit transported me back in time. To a time in my life before worries, care and true responsibilities kicked in. I guess you can call it, my "golden years" or youth. A pretty great commissary with lots of variety. Took me a bit to figure out where the commissary actually was... followed my GPS (according to the gate guard, the GPS pin is correct) and kind of ended up in a random abandoned looking lot. Wish there were signs! Anyway, this was the first commissary I've been to that has self checkout. It's pretty convenient! I like the selection of food they have. Can't beat the prices! If you use a card, there is a surcharge, but FYI it's not like the full tax out here. For a ~$60 bill, my surcharge was around $3.50. read more

I always went to the commissary when I was younger and this one is one of the worst ones. All the meat is gone because they save the good ones for the staff. I think it is okay but at least save some for people. The racks of meat are always almost gone. It is crazy!!! The place is usually a hit or miss. Sometimes the workers are not that helpful. This place is worth going to when you need some groceries that are cheaper than the markets off base. The inside is usually empty but it is always clean. read more

Many, many products out of stock and not a supply issue, other stores have the products. So many non-military people cleaning out inventory, you can see it in their carts. Particularly meats. They should either open the store to all military or not allow non-military. And hire veterans to work in the store not civilians. read more

And yes, it is a privilege. For those who have defended our country or work in a support role, having access to the Commissary is a blessing. I grew up with the Commissary, and I'm glad that I can still get in. The Commissary is the grocery store for the Department of Defense. Cheaper than Costco, Walmart, or any grocery store sale. And we're not talking generic brands. Dozen eggs at Lucky, $1.25. Same price at the Commissary, but for an 18 pack. Rack of ribs at Safeway, $1.85 per pound. Commissary, 99 cents. TAX FREE...HOLLLLLLAAA! This place is the best. You cannot beat the prices but you have to have a military ID to get on base of course. I come here once a month and do a pretty big haul. I love the way the store is laid out, but to the people who are unfamiliar with how to shop here (yes HOW TO SHOP HERE..) there is a strategy and if you don't stick to it, people like me (vets) will get annoyed with you (rookies). If you're a bargain hunter, one can find deals at the commissary. Most items are not as competitive with the likes of Safeway, but items like meats, spices and some dairy are less expensive. Gotta be careful though, as they do impose a surcharge, which can wipe out any savings. Still, the parking, customer service, selection and overall convenience are worth shopping here. Also, they have a rewards program which let you use your cell phone to lock in further savings. read more

This is the only place I have been to in the Mountain View Area where the employees are attentive, polite and helpful. They have a wide range of all products and love their meats and produce. One thing to look out for is the aisles are one way to avoid traffic jams. Plenty of parking, checkout lanes are short if they have any wait at all. Again, great employees! read more

2014 YELP 365 CHALLENGE - 336/365 I grew up going here frequently as a kid because my grandpa served in the Navy and was stationed at Moffett Field for years a long long time ago. He would take me and my cousins to the Commissary, in addition to the two other stores ("exchanges") that they used to have at the naval base. Unfortunately those two exchanges are no longer there, but the Commissary is still up and running. Moffett Field is no longer a naval base and belongs to NASA. However, all of the old military buildings are there, including the Commissary. You have to be with someone either in the service, or who has been in the service in the past to get onto the grounds and into the store. Because this was an active naval base decades ago, the Commissary is definitely really old and feels like you stepped back about 50 years (maybe even more!) into the past. Definitely not super modern or new. The reason why my grandparents still keep coming back is because it's REALLY cheap to shop here. It is TAX FREE which is awesome because that can add up really quickly. I haven't actually been inside since I was a child, but I remember there being aisles and aisles of packaged foods, cans, frozen foods, etc. My grandparents would buy everything in mass quantities to the point where we had to use 2+ shopping carts during each trip. Overall, definitely recommend this place if you're in need for some cheap groceries and you've got the hookups! read more

A throwback that inspires both fond memories, and a bit of a 'love/hate thing'. Since this is set up for the benefit of military and their families there can be some awesome deals. Due to the smaller buying power they have some prices are quite high. As a smaller place they do carry items that can be tough to find in bigger stores, and they are about the last place in California to use plastic bags (which saves me from having to buy bathroom garbage bags). First time ever coming here and boy oh boy was it great! The prices are awesome and the best part...NO TAX! The only thing that keeps a lot of people from being able to go is having not been a part of any military branch. That's the only downfall, but if you happen to know anybody that has been, you should definitely convince them to shop here for groceries and maybe...just maybe bring you along to enjoy some grocery shopping as well. Shop for your groceries here TAX FREE! 2x Cheaper than Costco, the lines aren't as long as Costco either. The Commissary here is for men and women who work for the Dept of Defense or something military. You'll need a military ID or DOD to get into the base in order to shop here. They are always making improvements such as widening the aisles, and the addition of the enclosed refrigerated section. Customer service is fine. Hopefully, as a customer of this commissary for the past 40 years, I can speak with authority as to the path it has traveled in that time. Suffice to say that the Moffett Field Commissary (MFC) is at the height of its long term existence. Never being in the same league as the Travis AFB (for good reasons...all having to do with the size of Travis' military population, and its proportional budget), MFC never had the site, staff or budget of its other Bay Area 'rival' commissaries. Accordingly, comparisons would have been unfair - in the extreme. The past is NOT prologue, however, and MFC is now a shining example of what can occur when management is focused, and budgets are expanded to include new cold cases, flooring, aisle realignments that enable MFC to squeeze in a greater variety of produce, canned goods, and everything in between. I'm no longer apologetic for this store; to the contrary, I'm proud of it. The management has infused the staff with a desire to excel, and the results are found throughout the store. Looking around at the staff, everyone seems to be happy, and performing double-duty within their allotted schedule. Repetitive failures of freezers and cold cases is a thing of the past; replacements were made gradually, and now the entire operation reflects those improvements. If things change, I'd be the first to 'call them' on it, but the marked progression appears to be permanent...and still climbing. It feels good to be laudatory in my praise...especially since I'm a hard grader. Hopefully, whether or not you're a long-time MFC shopper or not, you'll find the Moffett experience to be rewarding. read more

The Moffett Field Commissary is a bare bones grocery store with narrow aisles and very little organic produce. There is no deli fish or meat counter, the fresh meat is packaged,I never have seen grass fed beef etc. It rarely seems crowded, best to check dates on dairy items. The produce section carries almost no organics, other than baby carrots and boxed greens. It serves active military, military retirees and reservists, National Guard etc. An ID must be presented when entering the store. Some items are considerably cheaper than civilian grocers (and tax free) Supposedly it is 30% cheaper. The staff is very friendly, but other than that it really does not have a lot to offer. If I did not live nearby I would not bother making the trip to shop at Moffett, especially when you consider the cost of gas. read more
