Fish and chips were a big hit! Wonderfully moist fish (mahi and ahi) - lightly seasoned and battered - with tasty fries and a fantastic coleslaw; the perfect lunch for a beautiful day in Hilo. Mo's had really stepped it up in the past year. They opened up a much larger space, started serving beer and wine, and have been really consistent on their food quality. We stopped in for fish and chips because a local recommended. We decided to share the Captain's platter. We chose mahi for our fish. The food was just ok...the scallops were the best, however the breading fell off before we could get a bite to our mouths. While it recommending sharing, we got odd numbers of food and the cole slaw (my favorite part) was served in a condiment cup and was only a bite. The fish was very greasy (fried does not have to mean greasy). The girl who took our order was friendly, but we received no other service....no water, no napkins, no refills, didn't check to see if we needed anything. While the restaurant was quaint, it was quite dirty and our table was really sticky. Yuck. read more

However, it was very strange to see a woman, I think a manager, walk out of the kitchen eating fries without a mask and offering to get us water. Great! Dad said it was best fish and chips he's had. We came a few min before opening and lady was very kind to us. Fish and Chips were 17$ but worth it - very tender and soft on inside, had a nice crunch on outside. fries were great, and a generous portion of fish, 5-6 pieces. I live in Hilo and realize this place is slow so I planned for it ahead of time. Went to order two Keiki meals today on 1/3/21 just before 2:00 p.m. Didn't get my order until 50 minutes later. Meanwhile, my kids were hungry and waiting. Not cool. No apology when I got the food. So disappointing. This place is decent if you're craving fried fish/shrimp but their prices are pretty expensive. I get that they're in the downtown area and trying to cater more to the tourists but us locals want some of the action too and can't always afford those kinds of prices. I was really excited when I heard about a new fish & chip restaurant in Hilo. I've heard quite a few exceptional things about their food in the short time they've been open. I gave Mo's a 3 out of 5 because I had a "so-so" experience. I had fairly high expectations after a coworker claimed it was the best fish & chips that she's had. I ended up ordering to-go and hit a few bumps and snags along the way. I'll start off with the things I enjoyed first... The fish was really crispy and not greasy whatsoever (which I love). The second thing I loved was one of their condiments in particular. I don't remember the name but it's yellow in color and has a honey mustard taste. It was super yummy! I ended up dipping my fish and fries in it as well as mixing it in the coleslaw. Now on to some of the cons... The wait was about 45 minutes and it wasn't that busy. The staff in general seemed rather untrained and ill prepared. I understand this may just be that the restaurant opened not long ago. Maybe they still need to get in the swing of things. However, I still expect restaurant staff to be on their "A" game before opening day. Another big disappointment was the to-go packaging. The container the food was put in was very soggy by the time I got home, and I live about 3 minutes from the restaurant. As a result, the fries were quite soggy as well. The plastic ramekins also melted from the heat which is something I haven't had much of a problem with when ordering food to-go from other restaurants. Two things I was somewhat neutral on were the fries and the coleslaw. The fries weren't anything special but having ranch on the side was perfect. The coleslaw overall lacked flavor but I loved the cranberries they put in it! I look forward to eating here again and trying out some more items on the menu. I'll also try eating-in which will eliminate the whole container issue. Overall, I'm happy to have a new fresh fish place in town! read more

Our first ever trip to Hawaii started in Hilo. I was craving fish and chips so we arrived at Mohala's for lunch on a Saturday in Sept. We chose the Captain's Platter which was ample for the two of us. I usually have Cod as my selection, but decided to try Ono this time, and was happy that I did. The fish and fries were delicious. I can't personally comment on any other item on the platter as I did not try any of them. But my husband was happy with everything else! I will say that I found them a bit "cheap" when it came to sauces. We could only pick two and got a small container of each. Not sure why we need to ration tarter sauce, but it was a bit odd. Our service was VERY slow. It was explained that they accidentally gave our meal to a doordash/uber eats driver so we were waiting much longer than you would expect for lunch. Overall the staff was apologetic and efficient. I'd be happy to return again if we ever travel to Hilo. read more

I've travelled extensively and have had great fish and chips. I'm a vegetarian who eats seafood... I've visited Mo' s twice. First time, I ordered to go. It took nearly an hour for two orders of fish and chips. The lady at the counter was so apologetic and asked several times if she could get me anything. I got home, .3 miles so it took 5 minutes or less, fish and chips soggy from the containers. My daughter and I were a bit disappointed. I rarely rate or review a new place on my first visit... We went to Mo' s and decided to eat there hoping for a better experience. I ordered opakapaka but they were out so I ordered Mahi because the Ono was a bit dry. My daughter ordered calamari. I should preface this by saying we were the only customers when we arrived. The lady who was working the first time was not there on our dine in experience. The gals working were not friendly. One gal told my daughter she had to pay for sauce. For the little bit they give it's shameful. I went up and told the young woman what I wanted and she apologized. I might give them another try but not certain. For a new fish and chips place they need to offer something that sets them apart from other places. They need to step up their game, offer fresh skin on fries or offer a cottage fry. Anything to make them stand out! Their fish is good but it needs to be better than other fried fish. Atmosphere very cute (bathroom a lovely surprise) and we loved the simple but well thought out decor! Fish was perfectly breaded and cooked! We loved it. Service was great. No side salad options. Tartar sauce and Cole slaw were so so. Pricing was confusing with hand written signs. Menu says fish and chips $13.95 but we paid $16.95 - not sure why the difference. Still worth it. BYOB - we are okay with that. Not air-conditioned and there are a lot of fans - so was ok. Great addition to the Hilo scene! read more
