    Family spread! Definitely worth it!

Tried this place while on vacation. Food was amazing! Services was great! Nice local spot! Definitely a must try!

Excellent! When I'm in the mood for fish and chips, this is exactly what I'm looking! It was a beautiful day in Hilo following the Merrie Monarch festival and this place did not disappoint. We were able to sit outside and enjoy the breeze and view of the bay a couple blocks down. We had the fried ono and shrimp plate. Their sauces are homemade and delicious. I loved the smoked mozzarella and marinara!! The marinara was cooked down and garlicky. Brought my leftovers all the way back home to Oahu. I also had the shrimp on a skewer with their homemade tartar sauce. I didn't care for my fountain drink next time, I'll get the lime aid. Servers were great too!

It's been a few years since I've eaten here. The bread is different on the mahi mahi fish sandwich compared to before. Instead of a soft burger bun it's now a thick ciabatta bun. Not as good as I remembered. It just felt too bready. We got the panko fried vegetables that were good, but really greasy. Very filling and satisfying meal overall. Pricey, but big portions. Next time I'll try the fish and chips as they offer options for fish choice.

My mom and I stopped into Mohalas while visiting Hilo. Neither of us were super hungry so we decided to split the choice of 2 and got the Ono and shrimp. It was a huge serving and perfect size to split! The shrimps were very large and a good portion of fish in each piece. Everything was fried to perfection and the dipping sauces were delicious as well. My favorite was the garlic & dill aioli. Our server was very sweet, she recommended the Ono as the best fish choice. We were very satisfied!

We ate here on a Sunday night, around 7'ish, and had the whole restaurant to ourselves. The waitstaff was friendly and helpful. Dinner was fish & chips (with mahi-mahi & the garlic/dill aioli) and a fish sandwich. The fish was lightly coated, crispy and not greasy. The garlic/dill aioli was okay, though a tiny bit too salty for me. The portions were the perfect amount. I was on the fence about eating at Mohala's but I'm glad we went. It was the perfect bite to end our vacation.

My favorite fried calamari in town. Best to call order in during lunch hour for timely pick-up. Never disappoints.

One waitress said that she was going to come back and then didn't return for over 15 minutes plus. My friend got the Loco Loco over tater tots, which was very filling and delicious. I got the ribs. Initially the only rib that was hot was the end piece and as soon as I cut it, the remainder was ice cold. I told the waitress who took it back to the kitchen, and they reheated it. The ribs overall were tasty, though not the most tender ribs I've ever ever had. I did like the French fries though it was cold after they reheated my ribs.

Walking through the entrance we were greeted by a server who also doubled as a bartender. We proceeded to order the following: Mai Tai's, Jamaican Jerk seasoned chicken tenders (wife) and the Lava burger (me)...both orders with the hand cut tavern fries. Since the restaurant was fairly empty, our orders came out fairly quickly. Both of our orders arrived hot and were very flavorful. As we enjoyed our meals and sipped our deliciously strong Mai Tai's, we enjoyed people watching and eavesdropping on the conversations held by locals. Throughout our visit, the server did a great job of checking in on us. If you're in Hilo and have a yearning for some delicious food and strong drinks, I recommend checking out Hilo Town Tavern. My only regret is that we did not visit during a karaoke night!

BUT, the Jackie Rey's in Hilo has now become our go-to fine restaurant in Hilo town. The building is classic. An old town Hilo bank, with the vault intact. High ceilings, comfortable tables and decore and an artistic antique wooden bar that would be a gem in the crown of any European city. The management and personnel are the most wonderful people. Always happy to accommodate you in the best way they can. After one kamaaina visit the servers will know your name. They'll make you feel welcome and that you are a part of their experience too, something that is nearly impossible to find in other town dining. They have rewards programs for kamaaina which includes a point system that gives you significant savings on your next visit. The food is first rate, from the pupus to the main dishes to the desserts. Sauced and presented in five star fashion, without feeling pretenious. We will be their peskiest and most loyal customer as long as we are in the area. Kudos to Jackie Rey's Hilo.
