We love trying new restaurants and were excited to find Moi Moi.
Upon arrival, I got the vibe that the restaurant is more of a lounge, which was confirmed when we were taken to our seat--a deep couch with a round coffee table. As this was our first time and we wanted to try multiple menu items, I asked if we could be seated at a table instead. The hostess first told us that we'd have to wait 45 min because all the available tables were set up for 4 people, then she changed and gave us a table with the stipulation that we had to be gone in 2.5 hours. No problem.
Immediately after sitting down, our server came to take our food and drink order. We literally just sat down, so we asked for more time. She came back 2 more times before we were actually ready to order drinks. We ordered the Nkrumah Circle Margarita and the Dinner with Blessence. She asked for our food order, we said we still weren't ready. 5 minutes later, she came back and asked for our food order again. Feeling like we needed to hurry and order something, we ordered the Fried Chicken Livers and Mussel Pot as appetizers. Our server reminded us that we could put in our food order when she came back with our drinks. 2 minutes later, here come the drinks. When I saw her coming with an electric green cocktail, I prayed it wasn't my drink and lucky for me, it wasn't--it was the Dinner with Blessence. I really don't want to write this next part of the review, but these were honestly the worst drinks I've had in DC in ages. They transported me back to All-You-Can-Drink happy hour at Sign of the Whale circa 2012-yes that bad. Nothing more to say on that.
The appetizers arrived and I don't eat chicken livers, but they smelled really good and the breading looked crisp and perfectly cooked. The mussels were also tasty and I enjoyed the bean sprouts, which I've never had before in a mussel dish. We did put our food order in when our drinks arrived and we ordered the Crispy Fried Whole Alabama Porgy and the Domoda. I asked our server if she would recommend the Domoda and she definitely indicated that maybe I should try something else unless I LOVED peanut butter. I don't LOVE peanut butter, but I forged ahead with the order and she was absolutely right. It wasn't bad, but you really, really need to love peanut butter to like this. The lamb was however, tender and everything was well seasoned, so it probably just wasn't my cup of tea. I didn't taste the fish, but my husband said it was good and ate the whole thing.
We obviously weren't ordering more drinks, so we finished the evening with the Molten Chocolate Lava Cake and the Big Smile Granola Mango Cobbler. Both were good, but the Lava Cake was not a lava cake as it had no lava. It was more of a flourless chocolate cake. Still good.
We asked for the check--a mere 1 hour after sitting down, so no issue encroaching on our 2.5 hour time limit--and the biggest surprise was a 20% included gratuity. I have no issue with this and regularly tip a minimum of 20%, but this further confirmed my suspicions that their main hustle is a lounge. I've never had gratuity added for a party of 2 at any other true restaurant in DC.
To sum it up, the service was great and attentive, if not a bit too attentive. The food was decent and there were other things on the menu that sounded interesting if I were to ever return. The couch seating is questionable and they should make it an option to specifically book a table instead of showing up to find out you have to hold your plate on your lap while sitting on a couch (I literally saw someone doing this). I want to give this place 3 stars, but I'm not going to. Those drinks though... read more
