Came here 1/2 hr opposite my destination because they carry Ashby's ice cream. Can't get enough of Ashby's Michigan Pothole ice cream. It's a new find for me even though it's been in existence for over 5 years. Ashby's (based Ludington, MI)) uses high quality ingredients which makes for creamy, rich tasting flavors. The chocolate ice cream, among several other flavors in their line is apparently award winning and rightfully so. I usually order Michigan pothole which is officially described as "thick black-tar fudge in chocolate ice cream with chunks of chocolate asphalt". They have soft serve ice cream, sundaes and many more menu items, but I was laser focused on Michigan Pothole and didn't pay attention to much else. Clark's has plenty of outdoor seating with many tables/chairs and picnic tables in the small field next to the parking lot and small tables with seats on the opposite side of the building. Ordering is at the window only, they don't allow anyone inside. Service is pretty fast even though lines are long. Be sure to study the menu beforehand (pics posted below) if you don't already know what you want and are a slow decision maker (more than 10 sec). That line gets pretty long and you can feel the person behind you stare fire into your back if you take too long to decide at the window. read more

My favorite ice cream place! Do not let the long lines deter you - the ice cream is totally worth it! It's a perfect place to hang out in the summertime as they have a ton of tables and chairs outside. This is a gem of a neighborhood ice cream spot. I was visiting Royal Oak to watch my nephew play baseball and decided to look up ice cream shops. This happened to be the highest rated one, so I gave it a try. It did not disappoint. The service is insanely quick and there are several (20+?) hard scoop flavors. I got the banana pudding' in a cup and it was awesome. My nephew got the o-o-Oreo shake and said it was possibly the best shake he's ever had. I really don't know how the Dairy Queen down the street stays in business. The ice cream here is FAR superior. If you've never been here before, you may quickly become overwhelmed with the sheer number of flavors and options available. I chatted with the lady in front of me, and she gave me some really great recommendations. It seems like a lot of the people in line here were "regulars". The portion sizes are generous, so keep that in mind. We two grown adults both got smalls, and it was the perfect size. We also got a doggie size soft serve for our pup, and judging by how quickly he ate it, he might argue that the portion sizes were too small... If you're a chocolate person, I highly recommend the Michigan Pothole. It was delicious. My boyfriend got the mint chip or mint cookie (I can't remember which), and it, too, was good. We will absolutely be back. We might just need to do a taste-testing experiment and work our way through all of the flavors- for science! It was raining on the day we went, but I noticed that they do have a lot of *socially distanced* picnic tables and chairs set up just beyond the parking lot. I appreciate that. I've been going to Clark's since I was a kid so it was formally known as the ICE BOX. They have great ice cream and sundaes. It's outdoor so it's nice to sit at their tables and enjoy your treat. Service is where I give them a 4-star. Yes, they are quick and right on point. However, when you pay - specifically with a credit card they ask if you'd like to tip. If you say no then you look like a douche. Some people don't have the money to tip so they should stop asking and if someone wants to tip then let them write it on the receipt or they'll let you know. I wanted a blizzard but they didn't have anything like that here. I ordered one scoop of vanilla with brownie pieces. The vanilla wasn't very strong in the vanilla taste and a little bit more bland. Clark's is a family friendly ice cream stand that has a size ale variety of hard scoop, frozen yogurt, and soft serve flavors. They also do sundaes, shakes and other yummy treats. There seems to be a line every time I visit (even in the winter months ) and the staff is always friendly. My favorite thing to get here is the brownie Sunday. They give you a decent serving size and load it with fudge, chocolate pieces and brownies. I wish the sundaes came in different sizes. In addition to only offering one size, they recently increased the price of their sundaes so you really have to commit to eating sizable portion if you're going to get in, which I guess isn't really a bad thing. They are a bit rigid with what combinations they'll let you do (for example if you want brownies and fudge you have to get a large sundae by default). Clarks is so good. A great small local spot. The line always moves quickly and there's plenty of different tables outside. We're close enough to be able to walk there so we go usually a decent amount in the summer. I always get the sorbet because I'm lactose intolerant, and the sorbet is good don't get my wrong but it's not the same as being able to have ice cream. BUT, we went today and they now have non dairy chocolate and vanilla hard scoop ice cream!!
