My first meal in public, post-quarantine! My friend and I chose this place out of the pure convenience of location. We had no idea how cute of a place we were going to! We were able to sit outside on the back patio under charming string lights. The service was slow due to being understaffed, but they let us know that ahead of time and were very apologetic about it. It's hard to accurately rate a place based on service right now with all of the quick changes that have been necessary to operate. The people who were there working, were running around like crazy. I ordered a frozen blackberry margarita (AMAZING) and enchiladas rojas (also amazing). My friend ordered the buffalo chicken tacos which she really enjoyed. The great food and drinks made up for the long wait and slow service. I would love to try this place again and bring some more of my friends back! Mojave has some decent Mexican food and it's not the crazy busy scene you'd get downtown Royal Oak at Cantina Diablos. I enjoyed sitting outside on a nice summer evening having some sangria and burritos. Their chips and salsa were really fresh and tasty. My only negative comment would be the fact that there was no fruit in the sangria, which is kind of what makes it a sangria. But not a deal breaker. It's the fourth if July and the Mrs. wanted Mexican food. Call after call to our local places went unanswered. Then, we found this place open. The room had a relaxed, amiable vibe, good for friendly conversation, a cross between a bar and a restaurant. A large-screen TV played a ball game but it was definitely not a noisy sports bar. I was impressed with Mojave's commitment to serving vegetarian and gluten-free diners as well as neat eaters. There were lots of vegetarian options. I chose the vegetarian tacos, filled with avocado, fresh cheese and pico de gallo in flour tortillas and accompanied by refried beans and lime cilantro rice. The tacos were OK but could have used ingredients like grilled onions and / or peppers to pick it up. The beans were earthy and good but my rice was a bit too limey (though kudos for having it and choosing a medium rather than a long grain). I also tried some black bean and corn salad with lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and cheeses. Again, it's a nice idea (black beans and corn are classic) but I would have preferred roasted rather than raw peppers and more dark lettuce (there was some). My wife couldn't dine here without trying one if the four sangrias. She chose the blackberry one and let me have a taste. It had a delicious, dark flavor (loved the wine-soaked blackberry at the end). Our server was pleasant and unobtrusive. All in all, this is a decent option for Mexican food and drink. Went in on after being done at sec of state, needed something lively yet comfortable. And this did it! No wait at all! Friendly staff, hated how the waitress said the Spanish words super English style at a Mexican establishment (I'm Mexican it's a pet peeve) but what can you do? Lol Ordered the enchiladas poblanas, they were really good, rice and beans good too, only complaint was the cheese they put on top the beans but that's typical here, still not terrible. My partner had the chicken tacos Mexicanos and he liked them. The salsas were good too. Oh and the drinks! Delicious! Tried the hornitos lime shot that was good. I'm not a fan of sugary drinks (too many calories, can't taste the liquor, and give you a headache) so I took a a chance and tried the raspberry mojito and it was really good. Used real raspberries, I'm pretty sure because I could see the chunks and seeds and wasn't sweet at all but had the flavor, tasted the lime and mint and the only thing that could have made it better was if I were poolside or on a tropical beach. Overall I loved it. The only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the cheese and the crowd was older, but I will be going back this weekend at night to see how it is then. Food was good, not great. The service was ridiculous though. That's after we showed up and didn't get spoken to for a crazy long time. We had to ask 3 times for silverware and napkins. Didn't get them until after the appetizer arrived and had to ask again then. We sat on the patio and felt totally ignored. It's a shame because this was our first time and we had high hopes. This is probably one of the only Mexican restaurants I'd eat at in this area! Living in royal oak, there are not too many good Mexican restaurants so I make the drive to Mojave for good Mexican good. I have tried a few different items here but my favorite by far is the Mexican pizza. The flavors are amazing and the size could feed 2 people in a small. The only downfall is if they get busy and don't bring it out fast enough it starts to get soggy at the base. read more

We have been to Mojave a few times and have enjoyed our experiences. That being said, Lawrence was an excellent server and had great reccomendations. Went out for dinner Thursday evening and we have been before, we really love their outside bar behind the restaurant ! But was kinda chilly so we wanted to be INSIDE, we were taken to our seats promptly. Waitress greeted us and brought salsa and drinks very promptly. We split a mexican pizza, was extremely good. The restaurant was set up well for social distancing every one was wearing their masks we thought. As we were getting ready to leave the food server comes out of the kitchen full tray of food resting on her shoulder mask around her chin not covering mouth or nose facing food on the tray talking to the waitresses ........laughing . Not sure why this place only has three stars. Went tonight for the first time and the margaritas were great -- not too strong, but not too weak. The southwest chicken egg rolls were amazing, as were the complimentary chips and salsa. Mexican restaurants have stiff competition in this town. We expect fresh ingredients and a good selection balanced on a fair price point. Having a bar might up the price some, but Mexican food is so ubiquitous, it better be darn delicious if it's not a deal. Mojave Cantina is spendy, in part due to the prestigious downtown Clawson digs and pretty confines. This is the sort of restaurant you can go for date night or taking an out of town guest, and not feel like anyone has to take a risk. It's safe. And in that safety lies the weakness in the meal. Nothing is particularly thrilling. As a rule of thumb, some of the best Mexican food in the Detroit metro area comes from holes in the wall restaurants tucked in grocery stores or unassuming facades. Mojave is certainly pretty, with a broad menu covering everything from fish tacos to wet burritos. Tipplers will be satisfied likely by their drink options. Their changing seasonal varieties of sangria are a high point. The bar is a highlight; come to drink, nibble on a few tacos you might not remember so much. TVs usually cover the latest game or tennis match. It had more of a sports bar feel after a while, but the patio facing 14 Mile is well worth it. But for the food, it's simply too Americanised for my tastes. The salsas are spicy but the burritos and tacos ordered by my party lacked a certain oomph. My shrimp tacos were good. Just that, not bad or great, nothing to rave about. At this price point, I'd like a bit more of a kick to the flavour and some pizzazz. Sadly, it was lacking. The tortillas tasted bland, and came out a bit papery. Sauces were dim rather than crackling, even when advertised as spicy. The green sauce on an enchilada had less sparkle and action than the version sold by Trader Joe's. The kitchen's enthusiasm and the friendly service are winning points. But $12-15 for a main entree, I expect more than what I received. Compare to another popular Latin American restaurant a mile north and there's a world of difference in flavours. Went here for Cinco de Mayo, loved the atmosphere, decent specials, but our original server (Bryce) really killed the vibe. I met people up there, arriving a little behind I waited 10minutes before we even saw our waiter to say hello. I ordered a Cadillac margarita, which I'll be honest didn't taste like anything special. My friend asked what tequila they had & the waiter didn't seem to know anything. We shared tacos and they took what seemed to be 40minutes. Watching other tables that ordered after us receive their food first. He never came to us to make sure we got the food until after the food runner dropped off the four tacos, which only had meat and sautéed onions on them.. we ordered another round of shots and a drink menu since he took ours away. Came back shortly after, no shots, asking if we were ok.. we mentioned the shots and he did apologize. More friends showed so instead of adding tables we decided we needed a new server. Overall, I would go back, try more of the food, patio is amazing. They do have Jenga, fire pits with couches and corn hole. So this place has a great set-up and has a good atmosphere. However the service and for here are really no good. First it took over 20 minutes for our server to come over, this is after we asked the hostess twice for our server. Then it took another 10 mins to get just waters. Then we ordered our food which was chimichangas, and the Mojave special. Both came with rice and beans. The food tasted alright, however the rice and beans were the temperature of that they just came out of the refrigerator. The order was replaced however by this time the experience was just terrible. So, their taco platters are three tacos. I know I like the tex-mex tacos and wanted to try a taco Mexicano, but I didn't want to order 3 in case I didn't care for them. The waitress said she didn't think they could do that because it might confuse the kitchen. Who apparently are overtaxed preparing food for the maybe 15 customers. Now mind you they are the same price. She asked the manager and was told no. So much for any flexibility. So much for common sense on the part of the manager. Mojave Cantina is become one of our go to Mexican restaurants in the suburbs. The food is excellent and the drinks are tasty. Be sure to start off your meal with an appetizer of 3 Quesos Al Tequila, it is delicious. We have been there numerous times and I usually get something different every time I go. I have been very happy with what I have received. Their margaritas are some of the best. They also offer tequila flights, based on price, you can choose various brands. Staff is fun and very attentive. They have an outside bar, which I have not been to yet. But it looks like fun. So the next time you're in Clawson and want Mexican food, check them out. read more

We sat on the patio on a Sunday afternoon and had amazing service. It was one of the only restaurants in Clawson that had people there so we chose to go where it was a little busy. It was around 5pm and we ordered drinks and bad chips and salsa, Delicious! I had a margarita with a corona in it and it was HUGE. Definitely worth $12. First, let me start by saying two things, one, I rarely ever give reviews; two, I did not know how to give half of a star. So, the experience started with our host taking our drink and food order because, as I found out later, our assigned waitress was busy doing other things that were apparently more important. Next, our appetizers came out with our meals... I'll never understand why restaurants screw this up. It is literally their menu that says appetizer or starter, I just don't get it. As for the food itself, I think the three stars that this restaurant gets on yelp is quite generous. I ordered the street tacos with the shredded beef and I'm not really sure what they cook the shredded beef in but it had an odd flavor. The tortilla appears to be pan fried but the whole thing is just a greasy sloppy mess, emphasis on the greasy. The refried beans and rice that accompany the meal are very much standard issue and nothing to write home about. I ordered the quesadillas for my son, I suppose if there was any upside to this...those were decent. As for the drink, I ordered a pint of Modelo which unfortunately after consuming it all, I found a dirty cup...grossed me out. I dipped my finger in my cup of water and rubbed the inside of the cup and it came clean. The waitress assured me that they are run through the washer but obviously no one has scrubbed these things in quite some time as it only took me a few wipes of my thumb to clear off the build up...the build up of what, I'll never know. As for the appetizer, I made them remove it from the bill as we never touched it. The table was wobbly, the ledges were dirty, spiderwebs and bugs. I'm not sure who the owner is, but I can't believe they are happy with the way the building is kept, much less their reputation. Suffice to say, I'll never be back. read more

Stopped in here with my husband a couple of days ago (Saturday night) for dinner and a drink. I started feeling sick within an hour after leaving there and, sure enough, we both ended up sick with food poisoning Saturday night/Sunday morning. It's disappointing because we liked the feel of this place, sitting outside on the patio in the summer, easy parking, and we really liked our server a couple nights ago.
