I've been to Mokja two times and needless to say this place is one of the top aesthetically pleasing restaurants in my opinion. The decor is beautiful and 100% Instagram worthy. With that being said, the staff is equally as pleasing with warm welcomes as soon as you enter. The first time I came to Mokja it just so happened to be the first date my [now] boyfriend and I shared. The food was amazing, definitely seemed like the most authentic Korean food without having to drive to Flushing. The menu includes rice beer and wine and a nice selection of Soju as well. It's a few months later and my boyfriend and I decided we would go there again. We ordered the steamed chicken dumpling 7/10, and crispy wings half half 9/10. For our entrees he had the bulgogi fried rice which didn't have much flavor in my opinion but he enjoyed it and I order the kimchi fried rice with chicken. My boyfriend and I also had our own beers and a bottle of Soju to share. As my second time going there I did not enjoy my entree at all. The kimchi tasted almost too sour and the chicken was chewy. The waitress had realized I didn't even make a dent in my food and asked if everything was alright, I told her I really didn't enjoy my meal however no replacement was offered nor deducted off my bill despite sending back to the kitchen. My overall total with tip ran me about $118 for the both of us. Granted the entree was around $20 it left me feeling as if their interest isn't to ensure their customers enjoy their food rather just collect their profit. Always love my brown rice bibinbap. This is one of the few places that offer brown rice as an option. Having a healthier choice option on food menu really makes it a winner in my books. I haven tried other items on the menu but this will always be my go to dish. I just love it when the brown rice gets burner a little at the bottom at the end of the meal on the hot stone pot. I saw this new place is opening and finally we had chance to try, me and my wife arrived early and later our 2 sons joined. We order Nigori Sake, ( unfiltered Japanese Rice wine ) and Sangria along with scallion Pancake. The pancake was ok but rest of food does not meet any other Korean standers. We love going out and love Korean food but here Big no O.... The Bolgogi is terrible, kalbi was cold and Japche the noodle is also minus. We did not eat much there but my son feel bad so we asked the server to pack. The service is also Zero, from the beginning to the end the waitress she did not have smile nor she is friendly, she looks like she has a lot of problem, she is acting very strange to other table, we been watching. You need to respect the customers and serve the best way possible, we know you can not pleased to everyone but you try ,,,so they will come back. Mokja was amazing! Right when we arrived, they took our temperature, gave us hand sanitizer, and hot fresh wipes. The food came out pretty quick too. We split the kimchi fried rice, rabokki, and kimchi fries which were all great. The ddeok was perfectly soft and the sauce was wonderful. The kimchi fried rice was rich and flavorful. The kimchi fries (nice and crispy) came with a tasty gochujang aioli and a heaping of kimchi. It's obviously a more Americanized/fusion style which is why I think people might critique it if they're looking for authentic Korean style food. But just because it's fusion style doesn't mean it's not super tasty. Lastly, the service was amazing!!! 10/10. Ate there for lunch this afternoon with the wife. Our server was amazing. Friendly & knowledgeable. We had the wings which were nice and crispy and not overly sauced. One a scale of 1-10, they are a solid 7.5 and apparently have won an award for their wings which hangs on the wall. Definitely worth a try. Then we had the Bimbop and a rice bowl. Both were very good and there accompanying sides including kimchi and vegetables were also spot on. Their whitr rice is very good which nowadays isn't a given. If you are in the neighborhood and looking for a solid place for Korean, this would be it. Wonderful lunch yesterday while passing through Astoria. My brother remembered having stopped here before for a quick bite, so we tried it. Warm, lovely welcome. Pretty space. DELICIOUS food. I had one of their soft tofu stews and it was cooked and spiced to perfection. My only wish would have been a wider selection of banchan, but I also understand that it's tough these days and the ones that were served were great and plentiful. Came here for the first time. It was not crowded like most places.The place itself is clean and it was bit darker for a restaurant. We basically tried almost all the restaurants around Astoria and this was the one we were skeptical about looking at the review but we still gave it a try. I ordered sun du bu(tofu soup with seafood) which wasn't that bad but they could use little more seafood in it,my husband ordered a bulgogi sandwich which he didn't like at all. The flavor was weird for him and he took only a bite and even the fries were not that great either. Korean with a fun twist. Came here no long before closing. It was a cold night but service was impeccable. The premises were clean, warm and welcoming. The bibimbap burger kicks ass. That thing was gigantic! They have a drawing on the board that shows everything that goes in it. Definitely a good choice if you come here hungry/starving. The other entrees are wholesome too. Tofu stews and curry were on point. I was really really sold on that burger tho. The kimchi fries were awesome. Large portion. This is a review more geared to the owner'a bad business decisions and complete lack of customer service, more than for food. Food is roughly a 3.5, but how they handled their first day may be much more telling. The other reviewer Joanna must have gotten there a couple hours earlier than us, because by the time we arrived (8:30pm), the place was fairly busy, and the staff and owner had clearly given up pretending to give a crud about their first impression. First, I gotta question the decision to open at all because apparently their kitchen wasn't open yet. One of the wait staff warned us that it would be a 30-40 minute wait for food. We decided to stick it out since we weren't in any hurry and the atmosphere seemed lively (this soon changed.) ...40 minutes turned out to be more like an hour and 30 minutes. The most awkward hour and 30 minutes of my life. Maybe the owner made a bad decision to open when they clearly weren't ready, and that's fine. But what's not fine is how he and his staff acted as if no issues (or customers) existed. No eye contact with patrons. No communication. No "how's everything doing? Thanks for coming, do you want some more tea while you wait?" (the same tea I had to go up to the bar to ask for, because their 5 waitstaff and the owner ignored "excuse me's" and then my pointed glares). The owner was constantly circling tables but never once said hi to anyone, or how anyone was doing. The only time he checked up on us was to clear our table of utensils and my friend's half-full tea mug...... I think he was assuming we were going to leave out of frustration (like almost all the other tables did), but I guess he didn't feel like opening his mouth and talking to us to get confirmation. Anyway, right after he cleared our table off of napkins, cups, clean spoons, etc, the food came. We couldn't eat it immediately, of course, unless maybe with our hands. When another waitress came by, even she was confused as to why we suddenly had a cleared table. By now, everyone has gone. We are the only table. The check came, which we had to ask for twice. And now here is the icing on the cake. I look at the check, and everything is charged on it, including the tea. Look, I'm not trying to be a cheapskate, and I'm not an expert on running restaurants or anything, but I would think that with all the issues opening, that MAYBE the LEAST you could do is comp the measly $6 worth of tea. So, to sum up our experience: a 90 minute wait for food (this is forgiven - opening day kinks), silent treatment from wait staff (horrible, really awkward), and a full bill at the end to drive in the resentment. Maybe the owner doesn't understand the importance of basic customer service and first impressions or just doesn't care. Maybe he's inexperienced and can't handle stress without shutting down and turning mute. None of those scenarios seem favorable when running a new restaurant. It is important to note that there is a definite element of fusion involved in the cuisine at Mokja, ranging from preparation to service. While K-Pop bounces joyously overhead, don't expect everything to follow tradition. The banchan--or side dishes--have been judiciously edited. A tandem ramekin will arrive at the table holding a delicate stack of kimchi and golden medallions of danmuji--better known as pickled daikon radish. The atypical service, however, is best compared to bread service elsewhere--or chips and salsa. They are intended to simply whet the palate and prepare you for the meal to come. So why not try something small to get the meal started? Like a pile of fries topped with kimchi, gochujang mayo, and cilantro. Or perhaps Mokja's intensely delicious version of steamed dumplings--or order them fried. In Korean, these little potstickers are called mandoo, and they make them at Mokja from scratch. A generous meatball of minced pork with vegetables and spices is wrapped in a thin pasta skin, pinched together into a half moon, and plopped in the steamer. You can order four or nine pieces. I recommend trying the bulgogi sliders. Bulgogi literally translates to "fire meat" in Korean, and has been ranked as one of the most delicious foods in the world. Prime cuts of beef are thinly sliced and marinated in soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, garlic, pepper, and other ingredients, before being grilled to juicy perfection. If you want to stay on the healthier side, perhaps you should try some of their fantastic japchae. Glass noodles made from sweet potatoes are sautéed with a blend of vegetables and your choice of meat... and I loved the shrimp. Hearty mushrooms and sprouts provide contrasting textures, and a scrambled egg is playfully laid across the top. Service was exceptionally friendly, and the wait staff is quite knowledgeable. If you are unfamiliar with Korean food, think of a bulgogi slider as a fancy sloppy joe. But if you are already acquainted, then you should definitely give them a shot. They are serving plenty of foods you will have a hard time finding elsewhere in Western Queens. My family and I love to order at Mokja. We frequently get the half spicy/half mild chicken wings, kimchi tofu soup, and bulgogi japchae. You must try these options. We tried bulgogi nachos and it was soggy because it was overloaded with kimchi (need to drain the kimchi juice) and jalapenos and barely any bulgogi. It was an interesting combo. Also, we got the galbi once, it was good but the price was too much for a small serving. We also enjoy the bulgogi burger and army soup. Kloud: Classic Korean beer, can't go wrong with that. I consider Kloud comparable to Japanese Sapporo, or Blue Moon. Safety drink that you really can't go wrong with. Food 2/5 BFF ordered her second dinner here. Spicy pork and kimchi with rice. Despite just stuffing our faces at Thai food next door, this girl is ready for seconds, smh. The dish tasted like Gojuchang with tons of salt. That pretty much summed it up. Pork was tender but overly salty, very limited flavor profile, I honestly could've squeezed Gojuchang and made this via microwave myself. Banchan 1/5 extremely limited and weak. Never refilled through out the course of our stay. Kimchi lacked chilli flakes and seasoning. Beansprouts Eh. Pickled daikon as a banchan? To end the night, we ran into an issue with our final bill. The entree was charged 17.95 as oppose to 11.95, which we brought up to our server, and he was quick to change it. We were craving some Korean food and didn't wanna trek all the way to Flushing, and just earlier in the day, I discovered a new Korean spot in Astoria so we decided to give it a try. From the outside, you can't tell it's a Korean restaurant. When you walk in, they have lots of alcohol promo/menu so you'd think it's a bar but with a 11pm closing time, that seems unlikely. For people who are unfamiliar with Korean food, and are from Astoria, this place is worth trying although you'll get a better experience in Flushing. If you know Korean food, you're likely to get disappointed. Mokja is catered for to an American crowd. We ordered the hot stone pot bibimbap and while it was flavorful, it didn't have the kick it's supposed to have. We also ordered the spicy pork and squid hot plate. They should honest rename it the squid and onion plate because I barely saw any pork in there, amongst a mound of onions. Even though Korean restaurants can skimp out on meat quantity, this was a bit disappointing considering it was our first time. Being Korean didn't help either, heh. I was a skeptic of seeing a Korean restaurant in Hipster Astoria. I thought the Korean-ness of the food would be lost and it kinda was. I would say Astoria has it's fair share of Koreans living in the neighborhood so I thought it would be a welcome addition. I picked up an order of wings for the Super Bowl and it took the standard 20 mins for the order to get ready, no prob. I think I have had my fair share of KFC(Korean Fried Chicken) so I have a good understanding of what to expect. I was kinda disappointed in the wings here. I thought it was a promising sight since there were a lot of Koreans eating inside. Also, the TV with the Kpop videos was a nice touch. One of the good nearby Korean place around my house. I order from here a lot and sometimes I would go there and dine in with a friend or my boyfriend. Last time I went with my friend, we ordered 4 food items from the menu. We ended up finished most of the food but except the kimchi fried rice but my friend took it with her back home to finish later. The staff were very nice and polite. Aside from the wings, the food is pretty mediocre considering what they're charging. The bulgogi marinade, gochujang, and banchan were way too sweet IMO, making it difficult to have more than a few bites. Veggies in the bibimbap were bland and could have been seasoned better. The galbi was simply OK, nothing special. The seafood pajeon was super oily and not enough scallion. For larger parties, take note: 3 card maximum. We finally had a chance to come back to Mokja after our experience on their first day! They seemed to have really come into their own, the service was great and the food was excellent! I have no idea how they have such a huge menu - but the various items we ordered were delicious! We came in around 2pm on a Thursday, so we were able to order from their lunch menu. My husband had their spicy pork belly lunch box, and I ordered the army stew (budaejjigae). I also ordered apps from their regular menu - a small order of kimchi pajun, and their Korean fried chicken. Kimchi pajun was perfect for sharing, and delicious! My husband who normally doesn't eat pajun really enjoyed this. It was crispy on the outside and really flavorful. The Korean fried chicken was SO GOOD! I had only meant to eat a few and get the rest wrapped up (I had a jjigae coming), but I couldn't stop! We ordered the medium - 12 pieces of the soy garlic, and I devoured most of the order. It tasted like my childhood - visiting my relatives in Korea and eating as much of the pickled radishes as I could! The army stew was excellent as usual - I really love that there's plenty of hot dogs and ramen noodles in there, my favorite parts! I definitely want to come back to try more food. For now, this review is based on their mandu rice cake soup and ahi tuna burger. I ordered the soup. It was delicious. It was my favorite go-to when I wanted something light, living in Korea. What made it delightful was definitely the side dishes. As a bonus, they threw in some glass noodles. I've never had that with this soup, so it was a nice surprise. My friend ordered the tuna burger. While it's not a Korean dish, clearly, it's nice that this restaurant has this option to attract more customers. However, I felt that the burger lacked a bit of flavor. So, I was all set to hate Mokja, with it's hip sounding name weird mix of fusion and traditional food and more importantly high cost for bibimbap. $13WTH?! However, since there aren't too many Korean options nearby I finally went with the lady. I didn't get the bibimbap, I got the kimchi fried rice which was surprisingly good and not too expensive. Color me mildly impressed/begrudgingly swayed. I went again recently and got their Army stew-which was won me over completely. I really liked this very hearty stew and was pretty accurate send up of it, but then again it's literally odds and ends in a spicy broth. I liked it so much that I got a delivery order of it to help beat a cold that I'd been fighting. On top of that, I've had some of their more fusion-y items, the kimchi fries are okay, but they bulgogi nachos are pretty good and can count as a meal by itself if eaten by itself. I came here with my boyfriend for a second dinner after being disappointed at nearby Gastroteca. Since we had already kind of eaten, we only ordered the Army Stew (kimchi stew with hot dogs, cheese, ramen, tofu, and spam) and spicy fried chicken wings. The Army Stew was new to me but my boyfriend highly recommended it! It reminded me of Chinese 泡饭 which I love. It was super hot and tasty and definitely hit the spot. Just keep in mind that it's Korean fusion, and that you're getting pricey, highly inflated Astoriafied Korean food and lower your expectations, and you'll be set to dine here. The food is subpar... Lacking in authentic flavor and overcompensating in spicy sauces. The kimchee fries are smothered in spicy mayo and bits of kimchee. The spicy fried chicken is hella spicy, otherwise nicely fried and served with pickled radish. While I was dining, I noticed that only Korean/Asian people had complimentary panchan on their tables. Whether that's by coincidence or not, I had to ask for panchan. Did not care for the avocado chocolate mousse..it is hard and thick and tastes like what I imagine chocolate playdoh to taste like. Heads up: They accept credit cards but can only split the bill up to 3 cards. Also, their fusion section of the menu (bibimbap burger, bulgogi cheesesteak, spicy pork and kimchi burrito) is currently unavailable. Though I have been to Mokja several timers by myself, I had never been part of an Astoria Centric event. Astoria Centric organizes monthly dinner parties in Astoria. I heard about the event on Facebook, and thought I would give it a try, as I live very near by. I arrived about 7:PM and looked around the restaurant. Only two people had shown up, none of whom I knew. I told the manager that approximately 20 people were expected to show up. She was completely surprised as no reservations had been made in advance. A few minutes late most of the group arrived and the wait staff had to quickly pull several long tables together. Over the next thirty minutes or so members of the group began to stream in on mass. I think at least 20 invitees were present as the tables were almost packed, To make a long story short, I had a great time. I made many new friends who lived near me and I also found out about some of the residents who lived in Shore Towers on the Astoria water Front. There were two invitees who I knew through my mailing lists and one woman and her daughter who I had known since 2009 through another organization. What did I order and what do I recommend. I ordered Korean Fried boneless chicken and a Pineapple Sangria, which turned out to be excellent choices. All in all -a great success!! read more

Being that it is the only Korean restaurant in Astoria, I definitely had high hopes. I really wanted to find a place that I could get food from without having to go all the way to Ktown out in Manhattan. Unfortunately, I just wasn't impressed with the dishes here. This includes their drink options as well as appetizers. After living in Korea for a few years, I think my palette for Korean flavors have changed. I have high expectations for dishes and Mokja just didn't offer it. Service is a tad bit slow on top of this. I'm not sure if it's because they're always understaffed or because they do not anticipate a big rush, but it was definitely a bummer. The prices were just about the same as Ktown restaurants so it hurt a bit to pay that without enjoying the meal. read more
