It's a bit on the pricey side, but aligned with the price of fish. My husband loved the oysters so much, we ordered another plate to go. I love how big the shrimp is. It was fat and juicy. My daughter isn't much of a fish eater, but she killed her halibut. I like it and will be back. If you're looking for a quick bite, they're fast. Not as cheap as fast food, but worth it because it's a lot more for your buck. read more

I heard that Jackie's Place bought out the former owner Gee. Our first visit after the change of owners was not very good. In our opinion the quality of the fish and chips had diminished. However, I was finally able to convince the wife to give Momma O's a second chance and our last visit left us impressed. Fish is expensive food, halibut especially. I love the cod, and I was satisfied with the portion. They used to have a salad bar and we wish they kept it. The dinning area is clean and well kept. read more

We visited this place this week and we liked it. The place is quaint but has a cozy feel in it. Lots of selection and the fish is very delicious. The Halibut is flaky, the calamari was sweet and tender and scallops were awesome. Great service, too. This is definitely on our list of favorite restaurants. read more

I was so disappointed when i went in with my husband. I read that it was open again with a new owner. My husband has never been there so i was excited to take them there because I've had good experiences in the past. We both ordered the halibut combo plates. Mine was fine ( hard to mess up fried halibut and Calamari) he ordered the grilled halibut with brown rice. The grilled halibut was so small and the rice was dried out. The rice must have been left out or made early in the day. I'm sorry to say that i won't be back. read more

Under new ownership now, slight remodeling as well. So far I've tried the halibut sandwich (fried) and the halibut tacos (new item) both were outstanding. The tacos were some of the best I've ever had. There are about a dozen more items on the menu that I'm looking forward to trying. read more

I love Momma O's. Great product at a reasonable price. However, today was a bad day for the restaurant. Myself and another table both ordered the fried clams. Always a great choice and a lot of food for the price. Today, burnt!! Clearly the cook or the server can look and see the dark brown strips are wayyyyyy overcooked. The customer should not need to complain. Management should show them what golden fried clams look like and how to send dark brown clams back to the kitchen. Momma O's used to be one of my favorite healthy "fast food" spots in town because I could get in and out quick on a lunch break without sacrificing nutritional value. The new owners seem nice enough but have on multiple occasions messed up orders (which I'm willing to live with) but in addition to receiving the wrong order the food is overcooked and bland (sometimes not coming with the right sauce). Someone sitting next to me could hear the "steamed halibut" I ordered crunching as I chewed because it in fact was grilled and the entire bottom was burnt. Super disappointing especially considering the price point, for a few dollars more you can get a more impressive meal from a sit down restaurant. Hope the new owners implement some changes soon especially since they also decreased the portion sizes while simultaneously increasing prices. read more

This is hard for me to do, but I'm giving Momma O's the dreaded one star. I went to high school at West and have grown up eating here. Quite a few years ago there was an ownership change, so I'm not sure if that's the reason for the decline. Here's the experience that made my last time there the last time I'll ever eat here after 15 years of patronage. I went in with my wife and we ordered the teriyaki chicken meal which is two pieces of crock pot chicken and rice. When we were served my wife only received one piece of chicken, which at the price you pay is a big deal. The lady didn't say anything when she dropped off our order and when I questioned her about it she gave me attitude. She said that next time I came in she would give me another piece. First of all, I didn't really go in there too often, so the fact that she would remember this seemed doubtful. I suggested that they either compensated me with a piece of fish or a salad bar trip, or refund a portion of my money. She declined all of that and said I could get another piece next time because they weren't making any more that day. To me, that is unforgivable from a customer service standpoint. As stated, I had eaten here since in high school but this person's bad attitude and unwillingness to right their wrong was just too much for me. I haven't been back in a year and a half and never will again. The food is better than average, but a little highly priced. I am a loyal customer and willing to keep going, but being treated this way is unacceptable. I know that person was at least the kitchen manager or possibly one of the owners, not just a server. read more

Used to be one if my favorite places but it has really gone downhill the past few years and even more so with the new owner (who was badmouthing the previous owners in front of customers by last time in the restaurant). What was once a good product that I was willing to pay a little more for now is most flavorless fish both grilled and fried. The cod tastes much better than the halibut so don't waste your money on the over priced halibut. . And please stick to the seafood. The new non seafood items should not be on the menu. Deep fried seafood is usually not my bag but I wanted to try this place out. First, I like the location; next, I like the salad bar. It's a simple bar, but has everything you need for a side salad. I really like that you order at the counter; that makes going to lunch with the gang much easier. The halibut was totally good, but the breading was of a lower quality than Capt Chuck's. The crabcake nuggets were small, maybe a little overfried. Maybe the White Spot is better quality for what you pay. read more

This is the place for halibut in Anchorage. Deep fried or grilled (they'll also steam it if you're really into self-deprivation). Yes, it has changed hands. Yes, halibut is expensive. I don't know how anybody could still be hungry after eating three pieces of halibut, a large scoop of brown rice, and a salad, but such people would probably be happier at Carls Jr. or somewhere similar. If you're trying to keep your caloric intake and/or your triglycerides down, order a two or three piece grilled halibut and brown rice with the chicken sauce. (You have to specify the chicken sauce, which is a miso-ginger-garlic sauce that is really, really good with grilled halibut and brown rice.) Add a salad if you want to get really serious. If not, get the fries, which are as perfect as fries get in Anchorage. And get a side of chicken sauce with those, too. The udon is also quite good. Highly recommended. read more

Was at Momma O's this evening, just before 8pm. Salad bar was non -existent, the soft drink ice machine was broken. I took out a twenty to pay for my grilled halibut, only to be told that wasnt going to be enough, another price hike ? Im not trying to be negative or hurt this place, Iv been going there for over thirty years, but something needs to be said. Last time I was there, I ordered 100.oo worth of food, all grilled fish and chicken. The grill man started on my order, ( I was the only order at that time). While the meat was cooking he scooped out rice into to go trays, then went back to cooking leaving the rice to sit and cool while he finished grilling, (lids open). He finished grilling the meat and filled the trays, then proceeded to microwave our two orders of "steamed" broccoli? Im thinking im about out the door when I see him throw some chicken on the grill, It was my chicken.................................... Not really sure why he did this, why he cooked everything else first, dished it, then cooked the last meal? Needles to say everything but the chicken was cold when I arrived home. Another issue Im having, well its not just me its alot of people, is the chicken sauce, and the teriyaki sauce. These two things are of the upmost importance to scores of long time followers of this restaurant, but as of late, they seem to have lost or neglected the recipe to the point that it bares no semblance to the past recipe Momma herself refined to perfection many years ago. Maybe its just me, but in my view if your gonna call the place "MommaO's" you might wanna try a lil harder to mimic the establishment the name represents. I understand the new owner can do as he pleases, he can set his own standards as he clearly has, I dont have to like it, I dont have to go there do I ? The problem Is this place is an anchorage landmark. I grew up eating there, its important to me, when I was young we ate there almost every day, (no exageration). We all went there for the food that this kind, wonderful, amazing, woman prepared for us every day, for years and years, her name was Fusaka Nakamatsu, AKA Momma-O, and everybody loved her. Right now Momma O's its just a name on a building. Im sad to say I dont know If ill ever go back, many other long time customers feel the same. The Halibut Sandwich is a classic....bummer that the clam chowder runs out early. This is a great place to eat....I got a pickyass kid who hates fish but he loves their halibut. Iced tea is homemade and the cashier knows my name and I only told her once, years ago. I've seen the prices go up and down, depending on season but their food is consistently great and it is one of the few places I frequent on a regular basis. Delicious!!!! read more

I have a mild obsession with fish and chips and have ordered it everywhere, including all over England. The halibut and chips at Momma O's was, hands down, the best I've ever had. Fish was tender and flavorful; batter was the ideal blend of chew, crunch and grease; steak fries were perfect. I only use malt vinegar, so I can't speak to the tartar sauce, but it looked homemade. Maybe? Anyway, at $18 or so, this dish is a bit pricy (cod and chips is about $14), but it will fill you up all day, and it's still cheaper than halibut and chips in downtown Anchorage. And so good! The restaurant looks like a takeaway shop, but it has a clean little eating area for 12-16 people. Cute touch: there's a little sink in the middle so you can wash your oily hands. Oh - and counter service is warm and friendly. There's a lot more here than fish and chips, but I was blind to all that. read more

Stopped in yesterday for lunch. It seems that the restaurant is going through a metamorphosis, new personnel. We had the fried oysters (just okay) and a halibut combo (not so good). We have eaten here many times, yesterday was a definite disappointment. The food took about a long time to be ready even though we were the only ones in the place. The portion of halibut was not what we're used to and over done. Fries were saturated with oil. Based on what we've experienced before - not good. Another place that took me a long time to have the opportunity to go. Great halibut, very polite server. For $13.50, I got 3 big pieces of halibut, and french fries. I eat a lot, and this was more than enough for me. Malt vinegar on the fish with the tartar sauce is wonderful! Very fresh fish and the batter was crispy but a little greasy. Momma Os has new management and staff. It's clean, food is great and service was fabulous! We had our food in ten minutes. We had halibut which was perfectly cooked. The salad bar was delicious. It brings back great memories,and whenever I bite into that wonderful halibut sandwich, I think of all the times I spent with family, and friends there. Mamma O's has the best fried oysters in 3000 miles. The place is in a quaint strip mall, but don't let that fool you. The calamari planks are to die for, and the halibut is moist and delicious. Stopped in about 20 minutes until closing and was greeted warmly. It was my first time and I felt bad for asking questions knowing closing time was coming, but the friendliness continued. I landed on the halibut combo with fried scallops and oysters with brown rice. Everything was fresh and delicious. When I left, I felt like I had just had an exceptional dining experience. Tried the Grilled halibut and ended up with a dense piece of dry meat that left much to be desired. The place was pricey.

Avoid this place...my order was $19...I was the only person having lunch here for the 30 minutes I was there, now I know why...it took 20 minutes to get my clam chowder, the counter girl kept going outside for a cigarette break and to chat with her friends on the phone and friend outside...anyways, she ended up coming inside, realizing I was waitinfg for my clam chowder, which was heated in a microwave so hot-the styrophone almost melted...come on, a 20 minute wait for a microwaved soup?...My halibut burger arrived on a burnt bun, I started scraping off the burnt parts of the bun, and the kid cooking then brings me out a greasy bun that was warmed on the grill saturated with butter...The halibut burger was a deep fried piece of fish, with a piece of single sliced cheese, and the tartar sauce was yellow with a crusty film on top...worst eating experience ever....and I gave them a $3 tip when I placed my order...and they kept talking about what they were going to order for lunch from a restaurant nearby...That should of been a sign to refund my money and leave...Avoid at all costs!... read more

I went to Momma O's in late May for the fish'n chips. Substantial disappointment. Blah venue with off-street parking. I ordered the halibut fish and chips. The fish came in small rectangulars and was not fresh. The chips were not tasty. The salad bar at which I got one visit to fill a small disposable bowl was uninspired. I understood this place once had a great reputation. I don't know if this was untrue in the first place or whether it degenerated. I am not returning. read more

Beware prices have been hiked. The three piece halibut with salad for 13.95 is not 17.95 without salad. I read the previous review and ordered the three piece halibut with brown rice and the miso sauce and I paid $18.95 for a scoop of brown rice, three small pieces of halibut and half frozen sauce served on a paper plate.
