    A bit of a mess
    Devin R.

I would rate this one star, but the workers were absolutely the nicest. They messed up my order and once I got my order it was burnt, they are short on workers. There's only one person making the food. It is decorative though. It was a bit messy. I wouldn't go back. Overall, this gets 2 stars.

We had a wedding Sat night. Went to breakfast at Mom's. Had about a 15 min wait. Not bad for Sunday morning. Great location, small place with a couple tables outside. We got a table outside. I got the fish cakes Benne, GF got an omelet. Both very good. Our server Amy did a big favor. The bride & groom were there when we were. She snagged their bill & gave it to us. As we asked her. Great breakfast before heading home.

Breakfast just like mom cooked. Nice meal with great service. There were too many choices for me to choose as everything I saw coming from the kitchen looked great. I went with a two egg plate with Portuguese sausage and a Portuguese sweet bread toast. It was very good. I wish that I could have tried more, but I had to save room for my lunch plans with friends. Looking forward to my next visit.

Came to Mom's for breakfast before sea glass hunting. It's a tiny place, but such a great atmosphere! The wait staff makes you feel right at home, and the chatter from locals and tourists alike was warm and inviting. The FOOD.... I had the breakfast burrito w/sausage and it was the perfect mix of vegetables and meat. My girlfriend had the frittata which she has now been trying to replicate at home. We split a side of corned beef hash and it was HEAVENLY. One of the best I've ever had. I can't say enough about the attentiveness and friendliness of the staff. I felt like I do when I go to my local breakfast place, or like when Norm went to Cheers. Maybe everybody didn't know my name, but it certainly felt like they did!!!

Try the steak tips, you wont regret it.

I was starving after my neices graduation and i decided to check this place out with a few people who were with me. Now when we arrived the place was full so we wound up waiting a good while to be seated. Honestly i didnt mind it because i had good company with me and it made waiting a lot easier. The whole time we were waiting the staff would routinely come to check on us which they didnt have too but it was appreciated. When we were eventually seated everything from this point on was great. Our waiter whose name i wish i could remember was one of the best ive ever had. She was short older woman with a charming personality. She made us laugh, accomodated us accordingly, and really made the experience here extremely pleasent. Now the place itself isnt a big or extravagent restaurant with fancy gimmicks. It was like an old school mom and pop family business. Again, i have to repeat and say what made this one of the best dine in experiences ever was the staff they really made you feel at home. Now on to the best part of the visit, the food. I had steak tips, eggs, homefries, with a side of OJ. Now let me tell you about these steak tips, it made me wanna slap my momma, thats how good they were. I found myself trying to make the meal last as long as i posibbly could. Never in my life had a tasted steak that was so good. It was like the good Lord himself came down from his throne put on an apron and made miracles. Whoever the chef was that made my meal must of came from heaven, theres no way steak, eggs, and homefries could taste THAT good from human hands. Even my OJ was the best ive had you could just taste the richness in it. Im positive it was freshly squeezed, i forgot how good REAL OJ tastes. All in all this place has given me one of the best dine in experiences ive ever had, im definitely coming back here for those steak tips anytime im back in town.

Small "home-style" diner. Ordered the steak tips and eggs, and it was scrape the plate worthy. Diamond in the rough for sure.

I'm happy to report that the igloos available now are so much nicer, big, bright and clear and you can enjoy all of the beautiful water views. There is however a fee of $15pp for this experience. We dined with some friends and everybody enjoyed their cocktails and food. I started with the bang bang shrimp appetizer. What a bargain for $18! There were maybe 8-10 very large shrimp, and they were perfectly cooked. The fried haddock/chips was great, fish was crispy and delicious, but unfortunately the fries were not good and did not match the caliber of the food served. Limp, and probably were hanging around under a heat lamp :-( Overall, service was OK. Food arrived fairly staggered and one entree was very late. The runner confessed and said he dropped the plate and it had to be remade. It would have been nice if the server informed us. Despite the minor service hiccups (very young and likely inexperienced staff), the atmosphere and food are worth it. Give them a try!

The service has also gone downhill. Last year we went for dinner once, had a reservation, and waited over 30 minutes while looking at 2 empty tables by the water. The hostess finally said that we could sit at one of them. Today at lunch we waited 10 minutes at the hostess station before anyone approached. We were seated and given water and menus, and waited 10 more minutes before our waitress took our order. We got items that we've previously gotten and liked. Not so much today. Our food came out 20 minutes later and we had no silverware, so some was scavenged from a nearby table. My fried chicken sandwich had been cooked for far too long and the coating was separated from the chicken and shattered as I bit into it. Not good. The fries have gone downhill as well. They were blasting reggae and it was just too much for a weekday lunch. We won't be back.

Charlie's Place Gloucester Mass…read moreWe decided to visit Gloucester in February 2026 as a way to help our relative get her new home ready for move-in. We took a Saturday off to do a little touring. After spending the morning touring Cape Ann, enjoying all the beauty there was to behold, we decided to go to Charlie's Place for lunch. It has the feel of a hometown diner without any appearance of a greasy spoon. The interior is very well maintained, extremely clean and pleasantly decorated. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. My sister-in-law had the pepper burger, which was smothered in red and green peppers and she ate every bite. She also enjoyed a cup of the fish stew. She has returned to Charlie's many times to have it again and again, it is that good! Large chunks of haddock crowd the serving while swimming in a buttery, thin, creamy broth. My husband and I made a meal of splitting three items: a bowl of the clam chowder, which has the authentic New England taste we were looking for, a simple turkey sandwich on rye and a side salad which was huge. We felt completely at ease in this restaurant which is obviously a local favorite and left feeling stuffed. The prices are very affordable. We truly enjoyed every bite in our first, but definitely not the last, time visiting Charlie's.
