I want to say that we come from California and found this restaurant online. The place is very cute and small. It is not wheelchair accessible. My dad is in a wheelchair and is very independent so we managed to to get in and comfortable. We went in during lunch hours and we did see that the waitress was busy, and we're not in a hurry at all. But she did take an hour before she took our order. We saw people who arrived before us enjoy their dinner and get on with their lives. BUT! I have to say, the food was SO worth it! This place isn't good. It's just the only place in the business area that has sushi. I had high expectations due to the high reviews but sadly I was disappointed. The waiter took our order and didn't write anything down. I remember thinking it was odd he didn't, but didn't think much of it as some people have the ability to remember orders well. Sadly this guy did not because he messed up my order, as expected. The sushi box that I ordered just came as 2 rolls on a plate (I was supposed to have 3) and they were the lousiest looking rolls ever. The rolls were not tight and everything was falling out of them. If I wanted lousy looking rolls, I would have made them myself. The sushi rice had no vinegar taste whatsoever and just tasted like regular rice. The tom yum soup I ordered was also severely lacking in flavor, it tasted like water with a bit of seasoning. Perhaps the Thai food would taste better but from what I've had with the tom yum soup, I doubt it. All in all, I don't recommend at all. Not even if you're working in the area and craving sushi. I used to get food here once a week but it's sadly gone downhill. I am ordering takeout so maybe it's better dining in. Every so often you get a delicious, flavorful meal, but there are too many orders with missing items, wrong items, or ridiculously small portion sizes. Today I ordered a $15 full-sized entree of Pad Woonsen, but received a teeny tiny container, half the size it's normally with half the volume of food. It was also cold when my dining companion's noodles were hot, and it seemed picked over. I wondered if I was served someone else's leftovers instead of a fresh entree. They also forgot all the normal sides and sauces for our satay, which is where all the thai flavor is. The pickup process basically throws the food at you so there isn't really an opportunity to check and ask for missing items. Apparently if you don't have your sh*t together when you order, they have no time to explain their fk up to you and then wait for you to figure out what you want to order. Their Sushi Special 2 is wrong on their website and has been wrong for some time now. So she explained how it should be and then I took like 10 seconds to look it over and asked her a question about something else and I guess that was too long for me to decide what I wanted and she said, 'Do you want to maybe call back when you decide, because we are super swamped right now'. Second time visiting in less than a week. This may be my favorite downtown restaurant. I have enjoyed everything I have ordered so far. Today I tried the Miso soup (full of tofu, topped with crunchy scallions and not loaded with salt) and the Massaman chicken curry (rich, flavorful, with just a little kick as it ranks only one spicy star). I love sushi. It's by far my favorite food. With that said, the first thing I did when I moved to the area this week was look for sushi places. When I found Mom's Siam 2 was on my block and had a 4 star review I thought I had hit the jackpot. Boy was I wrong. I got takeout so I can't speak to the service, although the woman who took my order at the counter was very nice. This sushi, however, was mediocre at best. But that's not the worst part. I took my sushi home to enjoy it and halfway through was stabbed in the gum. By. A. Bone. Thinking it was just a fluke I continued on, only to get stabbed again three pieces later. I have lived all over and tried sushi at many places, I eat it at least once a week, but I have never, ever encountered a bone in any of it. How did the sushi chef not catch that when he was making the rolls? In addition to the bones, the yellowtail rolls were all gristle. I couldn't even chew some of it. I didn't want to post this since the waiter was very nice, but my family and friends strongly encouraged me to do so. Based on Yelp and our fondness for Asian cuisine, I brought my daughter here for some mommy/daughter time. The restaurant was pretty dead for a Sat afternoon (only two other patrons), but it was cold, raining, and it took us forever to find decent parking. We sat at one of the tables directly across from the sushi bar. My seat faced the bar providing a full view. We ordered a sushi roll and two entrees. What started as a normal dining experience quickly turned into one of shock and disgust as I watched the older female cook. She came from the kitchen to the sushi bar with her phone in hand, texting, I assume. This piqued my interest as I wondered how long it would continue before she decided to prepare/cook our food, and more importantly, if she would wash her hands before doing so. After watching her text for a few minutes, she then wiped her nose with her hand and maybe a minute later, finally put the phone down. She then grabbed a plate from behind her and put it on the sushi bar. I was grossed out by that point, so I definitely couldn't believe what happened next. After putting the plate down she apparently noticed something under her fingernail and picked up a knife from the sushi bar and cleaned her nail with it and put the knife back down. She then looked at another nail and cleaned that one as well, and again, put the knife back down on the bar. Last, she walked to the glove box, not far from the freezer, and put one one glove and grabbed a piece of shrimp. I quickly summoned the waiter, told him what I witnessed, canceled our order, and offered to pay for the drink. He told me not to worry about it and helped us to the door. Never again! read more

That tells you that it's fresh off her 18" wok. But seriously, as a lunch place, there really isn't better made food in the Bottom. Get there early or you'll be waiting for a table. We ordered the Chicken Pad Thai, Drunken Noodles, and Tom Yum Chicken. Less than 15 minutes later, it was at our door. Couldn't believe how fast it was delivered and the food was high in quality and quantity at a very reasonable cost. The ingredients were fresh, the spices delicious, and it was served hot. The people were friendly and helpful. I called to find out how they delivered so fast. They said they don't mess around. I believe it. Four friends and I ate here last Saturday night and I can't rave about it more! It was a 100% positive dining experience for all of us. The place is smallish, modest, but charmingly decorated. It's super-clean, which is really important to me. The service was delightful. We chose the place mostly because one of us is vegan and going gluten-free, which limits the places we can go and be assured we'll all find yummy things to eat. We ordered several different things. It was surprising to discover what a wide range of dishes they offer. The food we ordered -- including sushi -- was beautifully prepared, with an amazing depth of flavor. Ingredients were fresh and of good quality. We all vowed we would return. In fact, I tried to the next day but, alas, they're closed on Sundays. Next time I'm in Richmond, I will make a bee-line for Mom's. We finished off our dinner by sharing an order of the sweet, sticky rice with mango, a special of the day. Heaven on earth! This is a hidden gem in Shockhoe bottom that we have passed over as it is relatively quiet in the evening. The waitstaff is excellent - welcoming and helpful in selecting prime dishes. We started with the best shrimp tempura that were on a nest of tempura veggies - yummy!! The chicken sate and spring rolls were great as well. We ended sharing the Kao Kapow beef on jasmine rice with an egg on top - delightful! They also have a solid selection of craft beer. Will definitely be back!!! read more
