Taking the advice from a couple we'd met at our last stop, we headed for Narragansett in search of a good Lobster roll. Pulling up to Monahan's Clam Shack it was apparent we were in the right spot, as the line was out to the street. Parking was a bit difficult, not a not of spots in the area, but we lucked out and found a spot. It was probably about 15-20 minute wait, and we were at the window ordering our lunch. My wife and I decided to share a lobster roll (cold), and a cup of clam chowder(white). We took a seat on their patio, no indoor seating, and enjoyed a beautiful view of the sea. The patio is a decent size and wraps around the back of the building. There's plenty of seating, and people are pretty good about not lingering too long after they eat. Topped with a nice breeze, it was a great spot to stop to eat. Our order was brough out to us after about a 10-15 minute wait. The lobster roll was packed with meat, not too much mayo, honestly very good ratios of ingredients. The cup of clam chowder was filled to the rim, and packed full of flavor. It was a delicious meal! Prices were maybe on the high end, but it was good quality food, the lobster roll was packed full of lobster meat, and not just filler. We had a great meal here! My husband and I came to start our vacation here seeing this had excellent reviews, the kind of food we're looking for, and views to die for. We couldn't go anywhere else! I needed a lobster roll, and a lobster roll I got, opting for the hot one, my husband getting the cold. We also got the crab cake, stuffed quahog, and clam cake appetizers. I loved my lobster roll, the crab cake didn't do it for me, the stuffed quahog was interesting in a good way, and the clam cakes were awesome, like clammy hush puppies. We came before the dinner rush so our wait wasn't too long, and the food came out quickly. The staff we interacted with was all awesome. The line got really long though after we finished our meal. I went here today. Parking can be hard but we got lucky finding a spot pretty close on the seawall. The line was not that long when we arrived. It was longer as we are. I ordered the fish Reuben and my friend got the Caribbean fish sandwich. We also got an order of fries. All of it was great. After you order at window you go find a seat on the patio. We found a table no problem. There is additional seating in the back past the bar. I also got a frozen rose at the bar which was refreshing and great. Great lobster roll ! You order at the window and eat outside with a view of the ocean. Tables were turning over pretty quickly but you definitely had to snag one while you could. Monahan's is super hyped up in the area, so I had to give it a go. There are always lines that move somewhat quickly so go maybe not at peak hours. Honestly, the food is extremely average and instead the vibe, service, and prices are the draw. The lobster roll is one of the cheapest ones in the area, and it is worth it for the price but honestly just so-so. The fish and chips were huge with fantastic fries, but the fish was also very so-so. Other folks tried their tacos and shrimp etc and also found them pretty average. Now the vibe though was great. Give it a try if you're visiting Narragansett; take in the breeze and grab a drink but don't expect the best seafood. read more

Don't let the line fool you. Yes, the wait can be long, but it is 100% worth it. You're not going to find better clam cakes, chowder, lobster rolls, or tuna tacos anywhere. If the line is all the way to the fire hydrant, you're probably looking at about a 45 minute to an hour wait, but honestly it goes by faster than you think. The best part is they have a bar out back where you can grab a drink or two while you wait. Their bartender, Stacy, is an absolute delight and keeps everyone smiling while they're hungry and waiting. Sometimes they even hand out free samples of their delicious frozen frosé! Last night we waited about 45 minutes, had a couple frozen frosés, then ordered the clam cakes, chowder, and tuna tacos, and everything was fantastic. They also have an ice cream shop in the back and sell some really fun merch. Every staff member we interacted with was friendly and welcoming, even with how incredibly busy they are. If you're visiting Narragansett, Monahan's is an absolute must. It's one of those places that's worth the wait every single time. read more

I went for lunch last weekend while spending the afternoon at the beach. Really well made food: everything was very fresh, and the fish wasn't an afterthought to the bread crumbs. After spending most of our vacation eating in fancy restaurants, I finally put my foot down and told my husband I needed something more relaxed. We wandered outside looking for food and stumbled across Monahan's Clam Shack. The line was incredibly long, so we headed back to our room and placed a to go order instead. Even from the outside, the laid back atmosphere and unbeatable ocean view made it easy to see why it's so popular. We ordered the lobster rolls, stuffed quahogs, clam chowder, and coconut shrimp. The standout was definitely the stuffed quahogs, they were absolutely packed with flavor and easily the best part of the meal. The lobster rolls were very generously portioned, which was appreciated, but overall the rest of the food was a bit on the bland side for our taste. The staff was friendly and fun, and the portions were great. If you've spent all day at the beach and want a casual meal with an incredible view of the waves, this is a great spot. Local seafood gem located right on the water. Small establishment with outdoor seating and an outdoor bar. Very popular. Had to wait in line for about 30 minutes just to put in my order. We tried the clam chowder, clam cakes, hot lobster roll (they also sell a cold version which is more classic for RI), and fish sandwich. The food was tasty but be aware that almost all the seafood here comes fried. The lobster roll was good but I personally prefer Connecticut style. Giving a 4 because I'm puzzled why this place is rated so well! Family of 4, spent over $100 to eat and food was just so-so, wasn't great but wasn't bad. You order at the front window then go find a seat and they deliver your food. 5 for easy but maybe a 2-3 for mediocre food. We got clam strip roll, lobster roll, clam chowder and crab cakes so a good variety and none of us were impressed. I will say the girl at the front window was extremely friendly and nice so a 5 for the staff! read more

My wife and I both love clam cakes and Rhode Island (clear) chowder so on the first opportunity on our recent vacation I directed our luncheon appetites to Monahan's which I understand has been operating at this location since the late 1940's. We each ordered a combo which includes 3 clam cakes and chowdah (yes, I am originally from Rhody) at the window and were told to find a table under the umbrellas. Our chowder proved to be very good with potatoes and bits of clam. We were not as happy with the clam cakes which admittedly were very large and served hot, but lacked much, if any, in the way of either pieces of clam or flavor. Came here on a Thursday around 11 am. We were able to get a parking spot by the water. This is a lovely little shack that is a great time on a beautiful day. The menu has a variety of seafood options all priced very well. We ordered the Maryland crab cake appetizer, tuna tacos, and swordfish tacos. We loved everything. The crab cakes were delicious. A lot of crab meat inside! The tacos were also so good. Fish tasted fresh and had great sauces and toppings to go with them. Prices good for tacos ~$14. Was here a couple weeks ago during an extended weekend away. Was told this was THE place for fried clams in the general vicinity. Was an overcast Saturday afternoon around lunchtime. The line was very long and they only had one window open with one girl taking orders. I'm sure there's a good reason for that. Ordered clam cakes, fried clams, a lobster roll and a burger. Clam cakes were outstanding!! Huge, filled w clams and very tasty! Lobster roll was huge, and only lobster and mayo...no unnecessary fillers. Clams were delicious but much chewier than I ever expected. Bellies were on the smaller side too but I believe that's a RI clam thing. Monahan's is a summer must multiple times!! We really enjoy the cold lobster rolls here. They have chunks of lobster and just the right amount of mayo. We also love the calamari. It is so tender. And Lee could not believe how amazing the whole belly clams were, the sandwich & 1/2 pint being the same helping of clams, so why not go with the 15.99 vs 21.99 ? The clear chowder, meh. Broth is fabulous but was loaded w potatoes and few clams. But a great broth. A view, clean and cozy tables. What more an one ask for. We arrived to be the second person on line at 10:50 am on the Sunday of labor Day weekend, parked right in front of the window, easy peasy. Would I necessarily wait 30-45 minutes. YES ! But 1-2 hours, no, I would return at a less busy time (mid week, rainy day etc) We had just completed 2 weeks sampling fresh seafood coming from New Hampshire & then Acadia, down the east coast to be able to say that Monahan's is a solid, memorable choice. You don't care for it here ? Don't like the view ? Feel the line is too long ? Blah Blah Blah, then don't come here. And I might add that the price of the Lobster Roll remained 27.99 from last season, which was a surprise. Stopped by the Charlestown location for a lobster roll. Ordered a hot roll. Was very disappointed to see that it was all very small shreds of lobster, no large chunks. It was overstated in butter so much so that the roll was soggy and the whole thing fell apart upon trying to pick up and eat. It was also served on top of a soggy bed of warm lettuce. I had heard so many great things about Monahan's, this was definitely one of those places we had to visit while in Rhode Island. There were so many options on the menu that it was overwhelming, but I ended up ordering what the locals would've gotten. Their famous clam chowder that comes with 3 clam cakes and a Narraganset beer. I have to tell you, this is probably the best clam chowder I've ever had, truly. loaded with clam, really delicious flavor. I personally make clam chowder from time to time but it's never like this. Bravo to the chef. The clam cakes however, that's kind of a different story. I was not a fan, they hardly had any clams in there, and it felt like eating a savory donut that had too much baking soda or baking powder in the mixture. My mom also agreed, and we ended up actually leaving most of it behind. My mom ordered the shrimp tacos because she didn't want anything fried and they were great. Overall great food, add to the fact that you're facing that beautiful beach, I'd definitely come back for that chowder and maybe something else. read more

We only ordered the clam cakes as we are from Maine and RI clam cakes are "gritters" as opposed to the flat patty clam cakes in Maine. They were hot and tasty and we brought some home in our cooler for another day. The only drawback was a lack of parking but that is not the fault of the restaurant. read more

I declare thee an EXCELLENT clam shack. Clearly, I'm not the first to get to Monahan's but I'll give you my experience. It was a dreary Wednesday in August. We were staying nearby and I had bookmarked Monahan's so we went for it, around 11:30am. We waited only about 15 minutes for our food, which was FREAKING AWESOME. First let me tell you that when I bookmarked the restaurant, a few hours later I saw a tik tok of a lady who said she was from Narraganset and moving away from the area and she HAD TO HAVE one last "fish reuben" from this place. When I saw the menu, I knew that's what I had to have. So, for 3 of us we ordered: two fish reubens, a crab cake sandwich, a half pint of clam strips and a small onion rings and small fries. The prices were surprisingly cheap for a place smack dab in a tourist area. The food was SO GOOD. First the clam strips were quite tender and tasty. The fish reuben was absolutely perfect, on grilled rye with swiss, 1,000 island dressing and slaw. I didn't try the crab cake sammy but it was huge and my mom loved it. The fries were not my favorite style (they have a coating on them-not for me) but the o-rings were serviceable. Great spot for some seafood at nice prices. read more

We went around 6pm on a summer Thursday night and we waited about 45 mins on line but after ordering, food came within 10-15 mins which wasn't too bad! line was pretty long though so I would definitely expect to wait on line especially if you were coming around dinner time! The clam chowder was really great! Lobster roll was also good for $28 you do get a lot of lobster meat! Parking was also a little hard due to the amount of people so please also take that into consideration! Ambiance...perfect coastal setting with ample outdoor tables with umbrellas! Only downfall is limited parking so prepare to walk. Lobster rolls are amazing, best in the state. There is like no clam in the clam cake but retrospectively i think thats kind of ok? Btw theyre like big puffy savory funnel cake donuts for those who dont know (like myself prior to yday.) So.. we are moving soon, and I'm incredibly sad that I won't be able to have Monahan's fish Reubens anymore. It's my go to every time we come here. I get the fish Reuben with an extra side of dressing, a side of fries, and occasionally will get some calamari. They serve alcohol too with a couple of draft options (I think it's usually Whalers Rise and another local beer, but I don't remember). It's a scenic spot right on the water, and they bring your food out to you. The service is pretty quick. I'll miss this place, for sure! read more

Wow, what a welcome surprise! I didn't expect such a short wait at the tail end of summer, but the food was so good a long wait would have been worth it! I've been going to the Holy Trinity of Clam Shacks - Aunt Carries, George's and Champlin's - since I was a mere winnow. But I was already in the neighborhood so I figured I'd check out Monahans. Am I glad I did! The line moved quickly and my order came out in record time. The clam cakes and chowder special was the way to go. 3 perfectly cooked cakes with just the right crispy exterior and plenty of clams, and a cup of rich white chowder perfect for dunking. Best of all was the price, as was everything else on the menu. Some real creative specials I'll have to try like swordfish tacos and a fish Reuben sandwich. Highly recommend this great spot and my Clam Shack Trinity has now expanded to a Quartet! read more
