I went for lunch last weekend while spending the afternoon at the beach. Really well made food: everything was very fresh, and the fish wasn't an afterthought to the bread crumbs. Everybody has an opinion and mine is that Monahan's makes my favorite, most memorable, consistently perfect and delicious, lobster roll. And Lee could not believe how amazing the whole belly clams were, the sandwich & 1/2 pint being the same helping of clams, so why not go with the 15.99 vs 21.99 ? The clear chowder, meh. Broth is fabulous but was loaded w potatoes and few clams. But a great broth. A view, clean and cozy tables. What more an one ask for. We arrived to be the second person on line at 10:50 am on the Sunday of labor Day weekend, parked right in front of the window, easy peasy. Would I necessarily wait 30-45 minutes. YES ! But 1-2 hours, no, I would return at a less busy time (mid week, rainy day etc) We had just completed 2 weeks sampling fresh seafood coming from New Hampshire & then Acadia, down the east coast to be able to say that Monahan's is a solid, memorable choice. You don't care for it here ? Don't like the view ? Feel the line is too long ? Blah Blah Blah, then don't come here. I live in Narragansett in Summer and frequent Monahan's very often. Only reason I did not give this a one star is because I really do love this place. But today (6/24/2026 @ 12:08pm receipt check No. 51 $74.92 with tip) the Fish and Chip Plate and both Caribbean Fish Sandwiches were both horrible and totally over cooked to a point that there was no edible fish to speak of. Both plates had plenty of fish on them but the actual white part of what was supposed to be fish was almost non existent. The fried crusty part was a very dark hard rusty color of batter and horrible to digest. I should have brought them back but looked like a bunch of young kids were running the place. Extremely disappointed this time around and will now give this place a rest and try others this summer. Don't have money to throw away like this. read more

It's 2025 and it's still 4 stars. Just a few updates: the games int eh rear of the building are now tables and they have closed in the patio with glass barriers. Smart move! I had heard so many great things about Monahan's, this was definitely one of those places we had to visit while in Rhode Island. There were so many options on the menu that it was overwhelming, but I ended up ordering what the locals would've gotten. Their famous clam chowder that comes with 3 clam cakes and a Narraganset beer. I have to tell you, this is probably the best clam chowder I've ever had, truly. loaded with clam, really delicious flavor. I personally make clam chowder from time to time but it's never like this. Bravo to the chef. The clam cakes however, that's kind of a different story. I was not a fan, they hardly had any clams in there, and it felt like eating a savory donut that had too much baking soda or baking powder in the mixture. My mom also agreed, and we ended up actually leaving most of it behind. My mom ordered the shrimp tacos because she didn't want anything fried and they were great. Overall great food, add to the fact that you're facing that beautiful beach, I'd definitely come back for that chowder and maybe something else. read more

I declare thee an EXCELLENT clam shack. Clearly, I'm not the first to get to Monahan's but I'll give you my experience. It was a dreary Wednesday in August. We were staying nearby and I had bookmarked Monahan's so we went for it, around 11:30am. We waited only about 15 minutes for our food, which was FREAKING AWESOME. First let me tell you that when I bookmarked the restaurant, a few hours later I saw a tik tok of a lady who said she was from Narraganset and moving away from the area and she HAD TO HAVE one last "fish reuben" from this place. When I saw the menu, I knew that's what I had to have. So, for 3 of us we ordered: two fish reubens, a crab cake sandwich, a half pint of clam strips and a small onion rings and small fries. The prices were surprisingly cheap for a place smack dab in a tourist area. The food was SO GOOD. First the clam strips were quite tender and tasty. The fish reuben was absolutely perfect, on grilled rye with swiss, 1,000 island dressing and slaw. I didn't try the crab cake sammy but it was huge and my mom loved it. The fries were not my favorite style (they have a coating on them-not for me) but the o-rings were serviceable. Great spot for some seafood at nice prices. read more

We went around 6pm on a summer Thursday night and we waited about 45 mins on line but after ordering, food came within 10-15 mins which wasn't too bad! line was pretty long though so I would definitely expect to wait on line especially if you were coming around dinner time! The clam chowder was really great! Lobster roll was also good for $28 you do get a lot of lobster meat! Parking was also a little hard due to the amount of people so please also take that into consideration! All in all it was a great experience it wasn't too hard to find a table to fit our party and views definitely was an added bonus. read more

This is the place to be in Narragansett for lunch or dinner after the beach all food is exceptional, but their tuna tacos are out of this world I always get them and the coconut shrimp. I eat here probably once a week. They have a bar that serves beer, wine and frozen drinks and if you're smart, you'll grab yourself a frozen drink to enjoy while you wait in the line which can be off putting but it does go fast, especially with a cold drink in your hand. And it's totally worth it. I would say negatives would be parking, but everybody seems to make it work. You can enjoy your food outside at the picnic tables or even take it down to the beach or on the seawall tons of options. So.. we are moving soon, and I'm incredibly sad that I won't be able to have Monahan's fish Reubens anymore. It's my go to every time we come here. I get the fish Reuben with an extra side of dressing, a side of fries, and occasionally will get some calamari. They serve alcohol too with a couple of draft options (I think it's usually Whalers Rise and another local beer, but I don't remember). It's a scenic spot right on the water, and they bring your food out to you. The service is pretty quick. I'll miss this place, for sure! read more

Wow, what a welcome surprise! I didn't expect such a short wait at the tail end of summer, but the food was so good a long wait would have been worth it! I've been going to the Holy Trinity of Clam Shacks - Aunt Carries, George's and Champlin's - since I was a mere winnow. But I was already in the neighborhood so I figured I'd check out Monahans. Am I glad I did! The line moved quickly and my order came out in record time. The clam cakes and chowder special was the way to go. 3 perfectly cooked cakes with just the right crispy exterior and plenty of clams, and a cup of rich white chowder perfect for dunking. Best of all was the price, as was everything else on the menu. Some real creative specials I'll have to try like swordfish tacos and a fish Reuben sandwich. Monahans is awesome. Yes, it is totally touristy, but I also met a bunch of local standing in line. I have been more than once and there is a really good mix of both. They have a pretty extensive menu with something for everyone. The best part about it is the location. It is right on the water with beautiful views of the ocean. Great overall chill vibe. Picnic tables, and umbrellas, refreshments, and even a nice bathroom. You can order online or in person, and the food comes out pretty quickly. I had the fish and chips and it was delicious. The flounder was perfectly cooked. I would highly recommend this place and I will definitely be back. read more

This spot is so worth the stop for both the food and the view. .The long line for food is just that, long but OMG the eats are so yummy you will quickly forget the wait. After reading good reviews, we decided to get lunch to go here today in Narragansett. We came here once before two years ago, and the food is remembered as okay. Not today! Two lobster Rolls at $28. each. One cold and one hot. Rolls were too bready, and NOT toasted. Buttered? Why not use traditional New England hot dog rolls typically used for making lobster rolls? Lobster in hot roll was dry and had no butter flavor and no butter served on the side. It did not taste good. Not eaten. Sadly, tossed out. Clam strip roll. Greasy clams. Over fried. Not eaten. Fried fish plate. Over fried dry fish. But the Onion Rings and coleslaw were excellent. Huge Clam Cakes were greasy and fried too long! Outside was too crispy. Very disappointing!!! We are annual visitors to the area. If you want much better food by a mile go to Iggy's in nearby Narragansett and Champlins in Galilee. We will not go to Monahan's again. This is a fry shack near the beach. No frills. The food and service is adequate, the seating is adequate, the drinks are adequate. Nothing stands out, but it is predictable, clean, and you can get a beer. We will be back when in the area. read more

In my opinion this is the best place to grab lunch in Gansett in the summer. Yes, their lobster rolls are great (both hot and cold) -- they're consistently practically overflowing with lobster unlike many other restaurants in the area. But, don't stop there! Love their scallop roll and fish tacos too. Sometimes we'll even stop in for a simple burger or hot dog. Maybe the best part is the view, whether you decide to eat at the restaurant or take it to go to enjoy on the sea wall. The only downside is the VERY long line pretty much all summer, but if you go early enough during the week you can sometimes dodge it. I grew up here and live here all year round and it is always on the agenda when people come to visit. read more

10 stars - this is not a fancy spot or anything like that, but they do what they do perfectly! Fried fish, lobster rolls, burgers and fries, chicken fingers. Amazing place for kids and in the back they have delicious ice cream. Try the milk shake! Frozen wine drinks also seem quite tasty. The line was long but worth it for the food and there was street parking along the road. My only complaint were the flies that kept flying all over our food, so I kind of wish they had fly traps out. The epitome of New England clams shacks. Located along the waterfront with outdoor dining in a great locations with great views. We went in May for lunch. They serve up a great creamy claw chowda, it's thick n' chunky with an abundance of potatoes and melt in your mouth tender clams. The cold lobster roll is as fresh as they get with a layer of lettuce to assist the bun in keeping the chunks of meat in its place. We ordered ahead and got it to go. Ate it in our RV which we parked along the waterfront with some spectacular views. It was great for great people watching,too. We ordered directly from their website and went to the drink line for pick up, It avoided the long lunch line wait. What a great way to spend a Sunny Sunday Afternoon in Narragansett. read more

Closed now for the winter . We love both Charlestown and Narragansett locations with the latter being a place we take visitors because of the view. The food is good and they have some interesting dishes. The "weirdest" one is the "Fish Reuben" which is incredibly good! Fried fresh flounder on a Reuben (with Swiss cheese and coleslaw) on toasted bread is crazy good. I debated trying it for months, and can say I have eaten several since giving in to my curiosity. The only downside to this classic clam shack is the wait. A very popular place, there can be an extended wait to place your order, giving you a while to think about what you will order, and how delicious it will be! read more
