MENS HAIRCUT REVIEW: Tom is the dude for my boyfriends haircuts. He is fast & does a pretty decent job. There has been some instances of inconsistency (the sides sometimes don't match) but overall, the price, it's pretty good. His haircuts are $10 which is really good price for a haircut. He usually takes 15 minutes. It comes naturally to him when he's cutting hair. My boyfriend has a side comb type of hairstyle so he buzzes the sides at a 1 and then grabs the scissors & shortens the top side. The detailed part is again the inconsistent part such as the side burns or above his ear. I think it's because it depends on how many customers he gets in a day. If it's a lot, it might be causing the rush. But like I said, majority of the time it's pretty good and it's ONLY $10. Can't complain much. read more

Been coming here for years, and sometimes the cut isn't perfect, but after getting some pretty horrendous cuts elsewhere, decided I can't go wrong with a place I trust. Being an Asian owned business, most of the barbers aren't fluent in English. If you want the best results and aren't a routine customer, show a picture of what you want. If you get a haircut from this place, don't get one from the loud-mouth lady... she talks nonstop and is unable to give a basic trim. It's like she woodchopped my hair. Absolute crook. My daughter and I both went in for a hair cut. When I called, the lady told me depending on length, it's between 18-22. They charged my daughter $28 and mine $22 because my daughter had thicker hair. This is the only salon I know that will charge more for layering the hair. Worst part was, her hair had to be fixed at home. I have been going to this place almost 2 decades. Tom is a best hair cut. His expertise is excellent. He doesn't talk much, because he is careful. He make sure his client satisfy. I usually tells him how many inches I want to cut and if layer or not. Then he takes care the rest. After a couple months my hair grow out, I felt it still look good. Took a risk trying it this place for the first time because I was looking for a new hairstylist since my default one was busy. Boy do I regret it. What kind of stylist does not understand what fade means? Fade does not mean shaving everything off from the side and back. Also, when I asked her to do the line on the side, she cuts the line all the way to the front of the head. Okay. This is the only place I get my cuts. I live in Studio City, so it's a ways from San Gabriel (especially gas-wise,) but it's more than worth it. My friends and fam friends go here for their cuts, so we typically carpool to get more bang for the buck- not that it's pricey here at all. We make an appointment ahead of time for Tom, because he really knows how to cut a guys hair. He's detail oriented, as my friend said, "You can tell by the way he carries himself, (ie; clothes, tattoos, style, and car)" and he can give a hell of a line up. The people there are nice, it's a cozy little environment, but the steak and potatoes is the quality of the cut. They only charge $10 for a truly professional cut. Mad props, I happily tip him. Having discovered this place through a friend's referral 4 years ago, I haven't gone anywhere else to get my hair done! Tom is a magic man when it comes to knowing what to do with my hair. Granted, this mom & pop shop doesn't have the amenities of a 5 star salon, but what it lacks in decor it makes up with the no-nonsense approach to getting you in and out looking fresh and so clean. I dunno about you but there's a certain sense of nostalgia I get when it comes to getting my hair did at an all-Asian venue. I'm reminded of trips to the local Asian salon with my mom where the whole family's beauty needs were taken care of on a weekend by one person. Tom is that person for me! Just got back from probably my 100th haircut from Tom. In this last decade and a half of Monalisa haircuts, I've seen nothing short of friendly, efficient, and extremely affordable work. The man is a machine - he can cut through four Asian guys or two average people in an hour. Obviously, if what you're looking for is something fancy, a ten buck stylist isn't something I'd go for, but if you need a quick trim and have a small window of time during your busy busy day, just give them a call and ask for Tom. read more

Tom is the best! I've been coming here for 4 years and he's the only one I let touch my golden locks of hair! The salon itself is nothing to write home about...just on Yelp. The decor and furniture was outdated even for the 1980's, but for a $10 cut do you really care? For $10 (straight cut) or $15 dollars (wash & cut) you're in and out in 15 minutes tops so you don't even really notice. Just make sure to make an appointment with him because he gets quite busy in the late afternoon. Oh, he's not there on Tuesday's either. One caveat: It IS an Asian hair salon, so be forewarned that there can occasionally be some loud banter in Chinese between the female stylists and/or customers as well. Only place where I want my hair to be cut! I've gone to other places in Glendora, Pomona, etc., but none of them can compare to this place. I think they specialized in men's haircut. I was the only female in the salon (that should been a sign). They seem to be very quick and very good at cutting all the male patrons' hair. I went in for a simple trim to my long soft layers. I walked out with choppy layers that could use another cut. :( I would give it 2 stars but the salon owner was so nice and friendly that I have to give them an extra star. You can't go wrong with Tom. He is good and fast. Don't bother with the others. The place can use a little update. It is clean but it looks like it has not been remodeled since the 70's. And it is very cheap for the quality of the cut. You need to call ahead to find out if Tom is busy. He will tell you exactly what time he will be free. I never had to wait if I called ahead. Definitely a great place to get your haircut. I've been going to this barbershop for the past 4 years now and have always received consistent haircuts from Tom. I can't really say how well he cuts for women but he does do a great job cutting for men. You can definitely tell he is a perfectionist when he cuts your hair since he too really takes good care of his own hair. Within the four years I've been going to Tom, he has changed his hairstyle almost every year. Every time I come in to get my haircut, he already knows who I am and what style I want. If you want to change it up, just show Tom a picture and he can definitely do the job which I have done before and it came it out great. As for the rest of the Monalisa crew, I'm pretty sure they are all great as well. Since I was referred by friend that Tom is great, I only stuck with him and he has never disappointed me ever since. Tom is what makes this place go and keeps me (and my brother) coming back. Been going there since college (or maybe high school; I forgot, I am getting old) but Tom has been there the whole time. I actually work in China which makes me take about 5-6 trips back to LA. Don't know if any of you have been to China but this country prides itself on the wide array of hair/beauty salons. Haircuts there can range from 10 USD to 40 USD. Overall, they are about a 2 hour experience of some teenager with no experience but since he has watched MTV China and knows the latest Jay Chou fad, he is a 'certified' barber. Needless to say, it's terrible and makes me appreciate what Tom can do when I come back to LA. Make an appointment and you get your haircut properly done in about 10-15 min. I was looking for a cheap, fast, & local haircut salon to trim the side of my hair. I read a lot of reviews and found Monalisa Hair Design. In addition, I was surprised to find out that Monalisa closes around 6:30pm on Sunday. I went in around 5:30pm without a reservation and a hair stylist took me in right away. I told her that I just wanted to cut the side and leave the top as it is. Unfortunately, I've experienced a few hairstylist that ignore what you tell them and they do their own thing. The stylist did exactly as what was requested and she finished cutting the side of my hair less than 10 mins! My haircut wasn't obviously spectacular, but I was happy that it was fast and my goal was accomplished. I would definitely come here again and give them a full shot of cutting my hair. read more

He asked the person who picked up the phone(the guy) if there was a wait and if we can come in and they said no wait. We came in 10 minutes after we called and the dude goes "OH I'M BUSY UNTIL 4" (which is 3 hours later!) "YOU HAVE TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT" Uhm, we talked to you on the phone 10 minutes ago and you said you WEREN'T BUSY. There wasn't even anyone there! DO NOT COME HERE!!! Terrible customer service and no skill in cutting hair. Had this old asian lady cut my hair, no skill, I could have cut my own hair better blind folded. She was talking shit behind my back, but didn't know that I understood Chinese. I just calmly watch her act out her bullshit, as she tried to joke with me in english after she talked shit behind my back in chinese to the other barber.
