I have no clue what the prices are, and I kinda know what most of the dim sum items are called in my lame pronunciation. There are several options one can partake in with regards to Cantonese style dim sum. First, there's the fancy sit down restaurant where you get charged per person for a pot of tea (with complementary hot water refills), with or without the push cart experience by naggy pushy at times clueless older ladies at some places (which make you wonder if some of them work on commi$$ion in addition to the child labor hourly rate$ they are getting from the A$IAN Cheapne$$ restaurant owner$). Depending on the location, quality, and prestige of this type of restaurant, this will be the more pricer option. The second one is of course the el cheapo nitty gritty frozen and microwaveable variety, available at your finest Asian supermarket (Amoy and Doll brands come to mind with a myriad of other selections only for the bold & the brave). Great for post Asian clubbing munchie stoners (that is if you're not too stoned to operate a microwave). This one is I suppose the only "24 hour" solution (unlike in Taipei where there ARE 24 hour dim sum restaurants, none of them I hear are any good or authentic, but available nonetheless and better than the frozen crap we have). The third one is somewhere in between, and for SF city proper, that is the smaller Chinatown like shops that make and steam/fry/bake/cook their own dim sum in house and sell them to-go only. It's not restaurant quality, but sure beats being a stoner munchie or a munchie stoner resorting to TV dinner style snacking. Luckily you can find these kinds of shops in the Richmond and of course scattered places across the Sunset. And Mongkok Dim Sum on Noriega, at least based on my last take-out experience with them years ago, has proven to be a reliable and very affordable means.of dimming the sum. My memory is mostly failing on me, but I've stuck with the basics and the classics from MDS (from shrimp dumplings, shiu mai, chicken feet/phoenix claws, fried daikon cake, chive dumplings, rice noodle rolls with beef, various dim sum desserts etc), and they've come through for me and my stomach a lot more than flakey friends or unreliable family members. Again decent, great value, a tad bit unrefined and perhaps a wee bit Americanized, but not uber restaurant pimp class. Come early well before the lunch crowds and the vicious meter maids hit, coz that double parking fine to run inside MDS buying to go might end up costing as much as a lunch at Koi Palace with crab XLB. The name Mongkok derives from an area in Hong Kong, pronounced Wong Gok (used to be called Argyle in English, then reverted back to Mongkok after British rule ended in 97), that very loosely translates to "very busy and packed point". It is THE most happening place to be for youngsters, hipsters, and maybe their version of Yelpers & Facebookers. Lots of cool shops for the ladies, guys, ranging from pop culture, fashion, electronic gadgets, running shoes, snacks, desserts, restaurants, CD and media stores, arcade malls that might house some counterfeit bootleg DVD-rs of movies and video games, trinkets and the ilk. Some areas of Mongkok used to be shall we say, rather rough and tough. The scene of a lot of after hours gang related activity, where competing gangs may occassionally bust out a lead pipe or a knife and do some live man to man butchery. And of course the red light districts (although I'm told many have cleaned up as a result of government crackdowns, but that is still around to some extent or moved to the outer edges) where many a local man roam the grounds in search of love for rent amongst locals, Chinese from China, Russians, SE Asians and whatever exotic breeds float their boats. Part of the crime of course run by the gangs. So yes, Mongkok has been fondly referred to as "Mein Cock" amongst the luxurious pleasure seekers of the night. And no they are not looking to dim sum, but to dim dong. Pork ribs = fat, greasy sauce Noodles = wet and slimey from grease! Dumplings = ever heard of seasoning!? Siu mai = quite fatty pork too. Chicken feet = how many times/how long was this cooked?? The flavor was gone, the texture became soft and fat-like instead of tender and semi-chewy. WTF is with this place?! It used to be cheap and tasty...now it's just cheap, cheap, cheap and NOT good! Take out dim sum in the Sunset is limited. Consequently, its not unusual to see a line at this place. Overall, the quality of the dim sum is average at best and the service definitely has room for improvement . There is another take-out option in the area that I think is way better than Mongkok: TC Pastry on Irving in the Sunset. I was at Mongkok because my favorite hangout was closed for vacation. Here are some words of caution when you visit this establishment: Don't let them push unwanted items on you, and make sure the math is correct when they tabulate you bill. Still one of my go to spots for tasty and cheap take-out dim sum whenever I am in the neighborhood. Definitely a hole in the wall kind of place, but you know it's good due to its popularity. Love just about everything they make. My favs are definitely the bao's (bbq pork buns, chicken buns, egg custard buns), shrimp dumplings, tea leaf wrapped chicken in sticky rice, green onion pastry (always sells out in morning hours), chicken feet, spare ribs, white radish cake, hom-gok, shrimp and beef rice wrapped in rice noodle... Think I got all my favs in there... Very reasonable pricing. Usually a line out the door in the morning and lunch hours. Hubby just picked up some dim sum to go on a Monday morning. The food was dismal. Chives dumpling - hubby spat it out. He said it tasted days' old. Sticky rice in lotus leaf - too much rice and scant amount of meat Baked BBQ bun - gross! I think it was actually spoiled. The meat filling tasted vinegary. Tossed. If you're looking for a hole in the wall dim sum spot, this is it. They have about 4 to 5 tables and each seats two. Everything on the menu was in Chinese, I think and of course I was lost . So I had 1 million questions. The lady behind the counter was really cool about it, really friendly and was more than happy to describe items to me. I love this place. It's around the corner from where I live and I stop by to grab a quick bit all the time. The place is rather small. They have a few small tables and one large round table so I wouldn't recommend dining in. However, it is a great place to take out food if you are looking for a good place to take-out lunch/dinner or just entertaining a party or get-together at home. The service is FAST, the prices are CHEAP, and the portions are HUGE. I always get their congee with pork and preserved eggs, chicken rice in lotus leaf, BBQ pork buns, and pork spareribs over rice. Ugh what a disappointment this place was! I was walking my dog and I saw a huge line, so I decided to get some dim sum, once I got to the front of the line I ended up getting the beef siu mai, the shrimp rice crepe, and the chives fried dumpling. I was really excited when I got home (i live very close by), and the food itself was cold, argggg are you kidding me??? My friend and I each ordered a plate full of various dim sum items. Unfortunately, they were sold out of what I really wanted (pork buns). The food we did get literally made me gag. Everything tasted the same as everything else, and all of the food tasted rubbery and cold. Nothing was fresh, and the textures were terrible. I enjoy a good dim sum bakery, and most of them have to have food sitting around for a while, but this was on a different level. We did get out of there for only about $3.50 each, so that's a plus, but it's rare that food is so bad that I don't eat it. This place only has Styrofoam plates (no paper) and tons of other plastic, so minus points for poor environmentalism. The tables were grimy and small and uncomfortable. Let me tell you when you go into a Chinese store, bakery or a supermarket where you need to pull a number from the ticker, you have to be really aggressive. Why? Some chinese people don't follow the number system and see who comes first (some people don't follow the honesty system). The bf stepped aside as a group of "see-lai's" (a group of women who are in their late 50's and talk really loudly at grocery stores and supermarkets) surrounded him. He said that I could make the order since I'm aggressive and I fit in well with the see-lai's minus my age (I'm young!). The whole number system was not in place even though I was holding a number so when a see-lai "budged" to tell the lady at the counter what kind of dimsum she wanted to go, I said in Cantonese, "hey, hey, hey, I came first so it's my turn..." She looked at me and didn't say anything. That's right. Sheesh. We got 3 Chiu Chow Dumplings...man, just one dumpling was huge!! It was the size of my palm. They were 3 for $1.60...extremely inexpensive. They were very delicious...the vegetables were crunchy and not soggy and the meat ratio to the vegetable was 1:3 which was good. Same thing with the Siew Mai = 3 for $1.60 - they were huge! I was craving "Clay Pot" (Boot Zai) Pudding with Red bean...and they were not chewy or "bouncy" as the ones my grandma makes...it was soggy and too sweet so failed there. There's not much Dim Sum Place in Noreiga Street so desperation sets in for this place. I work around this neighborhood. The older lady that works here that has a short dark hair and has a high pitch, no class and annoying voice - bosses other younger ladies working in the front. She is very rude and she always pushes me to buy more than i really want ( claiming she will give me a discount if I buy 4 or more of this particular dim-sum that I don't really want ???) Does this make sense??? Is this food were talking about here or your just dumping all of this food on me that I don't care on having cause it's either no one will buy it or it's old already?? You think I DON"T KNOW THAT!!!! The food especially their hotdog bun is drowning with lard from top to the bottom of the bun! I might as well drink Crisco Oil and forget about eating the hotdog Bun cause I know the hotdog bun has more LARD than the Crisco OIl. Though it's definitely not amazing dim sum (i.e. I would not wait 30 min to get dim sum from this place), it's quite satisfying as it basically is a fast-food place for dim-sum. One tip to dim sum bakery owners: please close your freaking doors, especially when there's a temperature difference of over 24 degrees indoors and out, else your dimsum will most likely taste like doodoo. Or kaka. Or poopoo... you get the idea. I don't have a very distinguished palate when it comes to dimsum; I can usually only tell whether it's "good" or "bad"; "oily" or "not oily"; "flavorful" or "plain" and so forth. Most of these dim sum bakery types that I've been to in the Richmond/Sunset area have actually been pretty damn good, except for the fact that they all seem to make one critical mistake: the dimsum is never hot because the bakeries always leave their freaking doors open when it's freezing out. Here's a few scenarios to illustrate my point. 1. I eat in at a bakery-type dimsum place with a few friends, but I'm always first in line because I speak some sort of Chinese. I wait patiently while my friends grab their food and join me at the table, but by the time they sit down, my dimsum is already cold. 2. I eat in at a bakery-type dimsum place with a few friends, and I'm first in line again. This time I sit down with my food on the table, and start scarfing them mofos down while they're still hot. My friends eventually get to the table and see that I'm already half done, bitch at me for being a douche and not waiting to eat together, and then my food turns cold while I'm being bitched at. 3. Learning from my past lessons, I tell my friends that we should this time get the food to go and eat at a friend's house. We bring the food back to his place after about 10-15 mins, the food is already cold. Addendum: we nuke our cold siu mai in the microwave, but they don't taste the same as they do when they're comng out piping hot from the steamers. Long story short, the dim sum here is pretty standard and they have all the usual offerings, (except coffee. i didn't see them sell coffee here.) including paigu by the bucket, but the food is ruined due to a poorly-thought out marketing technique which invites more customers but ruins the integrity of the food. 3.5 overall. Stumbled on this place completely by accident. Got an enormous amount of dim sum for under 16 dollars; with $5 just being a huge single order of sticky rice. The jade chive dumplings were OK, moist but a bit odd tasting compared to other versions I've had. Not bad, but not what I expected. The large skewered chicken balls [OK: heads out of the gutter now] were OK but not that interesting that I will order again. The crispy bean curd rolls were very generous with the shrimp and while a touch oily were very good. We also had the shrimp rice rolls (ha chong fun) which were again very generous and good (but with take-out they don't have the very light soy-based sauce. We also had a lightly pan browned chicken bun (guy bao) that had a chicken filling more like what you would find in an egg-roll, complete with cabbage. Not bad, but again like many of the what we tried today was just OK. The expensive (but also generous) order of sticky rice was good, but not as full of ingredients (like lop chong) as I would like. But it was enough for two more meals, so it will be a great base for reheating. This place is small and not well-suited for eating in. The siu my look gigantic, as do the other ones we did not try. Since we already made the walk from my place to Safeway, the boy & I decided to explore the area to seek out places to eat in the future - or right then. This little place is hard to see since it is sort of hidden by construction. I got myself some dim sum for lunch since I hate waking up early to pack lunch. I got some Lo bak go (daikon cake) which didn't have a lot of flavor, didn't have a lot of stuff in it, & it was incredibly doughy. My mom's homemade ones are much better. I also got some Jia leung (Chinese doughnut wrapped in rice noodles) since it's one of my favorite dim sums & I haven't had it in about 4 or 5 years. Unfortunately I wish I hadn't gotten it & just gone another ? years missing it. The Chinese doughnut was cold & bitter which made me suspect it was spoiled. It was very disappointing. The boy got a Jin deui (fried sesame seed ball) which tasted very oily & gross. For some reason, there was a Lai wong bao (custard bun) in my stuff. I don't know if I paid for it or not but since it was there I might as well eat it. This bun was not the steamed kind which was interesting & it wasn't super sweet which I liked. The items that I got are only OK at best but the prices were pretty good. I am not too fond of eating dim sum outside of a dim sum restaurant - well at least not enough to want it often anyway - so I don't know if I'll return. I have found my go-to to-go dim sum spot in the Sunset District. This is not the best dim sum I've ever had, but it's decent enough. You just have to wait in line to order and hope they don't run out of what you want. My favorite things to order are the Cheung Fun (Rice Noodle Roll) and the Joong (Sticky Rice in Bamboo Leaves) which I am specifically coming back for. The Egg Tarts are okay. The shu mai, as Ed has said is waaay too big. So big in fact that the beef in mine was still very pink in the middle. Not tight. And there is usually a line OUT THE DOOR. Not that its a bad thing that the food is so good that people would wait for it...but it just is another minor inconvenience we have to encounter once in a while. This place is a hit or miss. On one side if you come here when the food is fresh, then it is good. However most of the time the food has been sitting out there for a while. That said the food is cheap and well worth the money. Be aware, the cashier can seem impatient. read more

Watch out for this business owner ( the older lady usually at the counter). I usually order the same amount of dim sum dishes regularly. Do you know that the total sales amount is never the same. She usually looks at the customer and see if she can rip them off. I was a regular customer for many years and i notice the price changes more (being a retired guy, i have a lot of time on my hand). Talking with friends, we notice the same things recently like in the last few years. I have taken them off my list of go to for dim sum. People watchout for this place. read more
