I ordered the xlb, shrimp and chive pan fried dumpling, ha Gow, sui mai and milky custard bao. I think it was $21 pretty good price in this economy where everytime I eat it's $40-50 per person. Obviously this is not a sit down restaurant to go only. What I really enjoyed: the Shrimp Chive Pan Fried Dumpling Milky Custard Bao XLB The black vinegar sauce to me was excellent. Usually it's just straight up black vinegar. Here it is sweeter and it made the XLB so much better. What could have been better: Ha Gow Siu Mai Really disappointed those were not up to my standard. My companion introduced me to Xiao Long Bao, and my life is forever changed. I've only tried two things here, but anytime he suggests picking something up from here, I get excited. My companion always does the ordering and purchasing, but the shop itself is typical of other dim sum shops in the city being take-out only. Lines that go somewhat fast, prompt and quick service, and reasonable prices. So the two things I'm obsessed with here are the Pan Pork Buns and Fried Shrimp Rolls. The buns are delicious--fluffy yet slightly crispy, with a flavorful, savory filling, and the perfect size. The shrimp rolls are so good! The crunch goes wild and it's always loaded with such tasty shrimp filling. I could eat many. Xiao Long Bao seems to be a decent spot for takeout dim sum items. There's like two other similar shops on the same block, but this one seemed like a better value one, so I went to check it out. It's a takeout dim sum spot and I got six pieces of Worteep (or Cantonese-Style potstickers) and one Char Siu Bao (baked pork bun) and it came to $10.45. I thought maybe $8 would be good here, but man...Almost $11 was pretty pricey. So my guess is the potstickers were about $1.35 a piece, while the Char Siu Bao was $2.35 each. Pretty steep. If it tasted amazing, maybe it would be more worth it, but really just an average dim sum spot. They accept cards with minimum $20 purchase, or just pay cash. read more

TLDR this is a neighborhood takeout spot for mid-tier dim sum, the 4 stars reflect the taste/quality based off this specific tier. That said this is a place I must visit whenever I'm in the area and I'm sure many others feel the same way as there is always a long line. The standout dish is the fried shrimp dumpling, prob the most unique and delicious item on the menu and it is a MUST order. Think a normal steamed hagao but deep fried -- crispy on the outside with a soft chewy rice wrapper in the next layer, and then a savory shimpy hot center. It's a masterpiece. Pro-tip: pop it in the air fryer for 2 mins when you get home, DO NOT use the microwave. The other items are standard fare -- siumai, chasiu baoS, fun rolls etc. they all taste good and the restaurant offers good value for everything. 2025 update. Whenever I'm in the neighborhood, I always have to come by and grab some shrimp rolls $4.60 (order of 3.) Their regular egg rolls $4 (order of 3) are good too. Alternating between each one gives a good contrast of flavors. The next thing you know, all six rolls are gone. It would be nice if they had some red sweet and sour sauce or maybe some sort of ginger vinegar egg rolls sauce for dipping. But it doesn't really need it. Been going to XLB for many many years. Mainly b/c it has the biggest meatiest Baked BBQ Pork Buns and their Pineapple Buns have a sweeter crunchier topping than other bakeries (including Pineapple King). Recently I've added their Pan Fried Pork/Veggie buns to my simple breakfast routine (gives me a little protein without as much refined carbs as their steamed bbq pork and pork/veggie buns, and not as sodium packed as the aforementioned Baked BBQ Pork Bun). We recently discovered a love for their steamed (not the fried one) Shrimp and Chive Dumplings. It has lots more chives than most other chive dumplings, so it has more in your mouth interest than dumplings with mostly meat. read more

My brother in law loves soup dumplings. So when we all went to San Francisco the first thing he looked for was good soup dumplings. We found Xiao Long Bao on Clement Street. It was small and very busy. The place was clean and they did have tables to eat at, but most were full. He ordered his soup dumplings. They were really good! I love that you can watch them make everything right as your ordering. Everything is super fresh. There was a constant line in the restaurant which is always a great sign of good food. I ordered the steamed buns and they were delicious! In fact it was my first time having them and I am a little obsessed with them now. I am always looking for them now. The same way my brother in law looks for soup dumplings when he travels. I even saved some for my plane ride home the next day. It was totally good cold! This is a dim sum to go place that a lot of local people come to, for reasons I don't understand. The dim sum was not fresh and the Xiao Long Bao (Shanghai soup dumplings) were dry. The service was a bit rude, which is to be expected from a Chinese place when you're speaking English, but not when you speak the exact same language (Cantonese/Toisanese). The quality of the food did not justify the service and I have regrets of buying and trying so much food here since we went to the farmers market immediately after and I didn't have much room left in my stomach. Came to Xiao Long Bao on a weekend afternoon with the intent of only getting one thing - the pan fried pork buns. Keep in mind that these are different from shengjian bao. When I arrived, there was only one person in front of me. Ordering is counter style and you can order off the menu or from the list of dim sum items they have visibly displayed. I was able to order right away as they had another person taking orders and the food was packaged immediately for me to take to go. Although fried on the top and bottom, the reminder of the bao was very soft and nice to chew through; not overly doughy or dry. Inside was a sizable portion of pork that was juicy and flavorful. You can also get these as beef. I believe they come in orders of 3 as I asked for 5 and they gave me 6, but it's all good as I thoroughly enjoyed them with friends and family. I like this place. Large selection of perfectly good, inexpensive dim sum. They accept credit cards for orders over $10, and they label their items in English for the Gweilo like me. Personally, I like abrupt. It keeps things moving, but it was unexpected and kind of nice to feel a bit welcome. The dim sum: There are at least 10 varieties of steamed bao and these are what they do best. Unfortunately, their namesake, XLB, is not a standout. I haven't gotten them hot out of the steamer so that might make a difference, but when they're lukewarm, you notice that the wrapper is a little thick, and they're not very juicy. I love their fried shrimp rolls and sesame balls filled with red bean paste. Potstickers, shrimp and cilantro dumplings, deep fried har gow, scallion pancakes all pass muster but aren't especially memorable. I'd call them reliable--the food is pretty good and never disappointing. Yelp prompts us to write about ambience. No ambience required for a tiny, takeout-only storefront. We stopped by to grab some dimsum for a picnic. Many of the places around were closed or mostly sold out, so I'm glad we stumbled on this place. One of the few places around that takes credit card too Good variety of dimsum. The flavors are there, especially for their shrimp and chives dumpling. The skin on the dumpling and baos were hard and not chewy/soft as they should be but that might partly be because we got there around closing time. Otherwise the texture of the fillings were also a bit too soft. The service is typical of a counter style dimsum spot, quick and a little blunt but that's part of the experience! My favorite spot for dim sum in San Francisco, reasonable prices and it's mostly all made in house including in the front window. Seating for maybe a couple of people. Go to new may wai store and buy your favorite dipping sauce and go get dim sum and then drive over to Golden Gate Park and you can have a full on picnic. read more

The dim sum is all hit or miss, the good and reliable items are their baos. The XLB is mid, har gow has thick and doughy skin, fried shrimp puffs are soggy, and rice roll skin is 3-4 times too thick. They also charge way too much for what they offer, probably the most expensive take out dim sum in the area for the most mediocre taste.
