Monkey Bar has been on my list for a minute. I was able to get a 5pm resy same day, so I didn't have much time to build up anticipation. Usually when I have to book a resy a month out, my expectations build up and I'm typically disappointed. So let's get into it... I want to start by saying, we ordered very light for three people, so I can only speak to a few items on the menu. Food: 4/5 Chu Toro Crudo: 3/5 I've had a lot of toro in my life. And this didn't taste as buttery indulgent as I was expecting. Maybe it was an off night, but it didn't seem super fresh. When you had it paired with the toast it was delicious--because everything is good with bread--but on its own it wasn't the tastiest bite. Again, couldn't have been an off night. Smoked Whitefish Caesar: 5/5 I'm a saucy girl, so I don't mind the amount of dressing on this salad. I could see how someone might think it's overdressed though. With the smoked whitefish and potato chips it's a salty creamy dream. To me it felt very balanced, the fish didn't steal the show and the lettuce was crisp enough to withstand the ingredients. I would come back for this salad alone. Wagyu Cheeseburger: 5/5 This burger. Is THE burger. I'm all about the simple things, a stunning piece of meat, pickles, cheese, and sauce--truly all a good burger needs in my eyes. This one was perfectly executed. Next time I'd like to order the double cheeseburger side by side so I could compare, but if you're debating, always go Wagyu. We split the burger and I was plenty full by the end of the night, it's quite the decadent meal. Lemon Meringue Pie: 3/5 My grandma used to make the most delicious lemon meringue pie, so the bar is high here. And sadly, this pie didn't deliver for me. It is absolutely beautiful and makes it's entrance known with 6+ inches of meringue. But that makes it a bit hard to eat, and the lemon filling was underwhelming. Mostly 3 stars for the presentation. I'd opt for a better velvet filling and a lil less meringue. Atmosphere: 4/5 The vibes are old New York (as I imagine old New York would feel like). The dining room is lively and comfortable. Next time I'd like to sit in the bar area, the window booth look like a good time if you have a bigger group. It's a bit confusing when you walk in through the bar, not very clear where the host stand is right away. It won't be a go-to for me, but a good place in midtown if you're trying to schmooze clients or have visitors you'd like to impress. Service: 5/5 Everyone we encountered was great. Me and my group were catching up and spent more time talking than looking at the menu. Our server gave us plenty of space to chat and enjoy each other's company rather than pressuring to put our order in. We never felt rushed, and were able to get someone's attention when we needed it. I have no notes here. All in all, I'm glad I crossed this off my list. I'll look forward to trying some other items on the menu. Dinner here was so good. Everyone enjoyed their meal, shareable apps were amazing as well. I ordered the wedge salad which was lovely after filling up on the apps! The martini was good but stronger than expected. Service was great and attentive. Only complaint is that I had to pay a non-refundable fee to make the reservation on resy--avoidable if you call but the availability on Resy and if you call is different which was confusing to me. Phillip served me and was initially professional, but things quickly crossed a line after giving him my business card. What started as normal interaction quickly shifted into behavior that was inappropriate and made me feel disrespected as a guest. I've been to this bar several times and always enjoyed the atmosphere, but this recent experience left me deeply uncomfortable. I'm writing this review because women deserve to feel safe and respected in spaces like this. I hope management addresses this issue, because this kind of experience shouldn't be brushed aside. Hard-to-get reservation that exceeded expectations. We heard good things about this place from a friend who lives in town and were told to be diligent about checking reservation times right when they dropped in the morning - and after a few days we were lucky to snag one! We went for a 6:45pm dinner (and came hungry). I got the classic old fashioned and bourbon old fashioned, and my husband got the sidecar ... all delicious. We had the meatball appetizer which was melt-in-your-mouth good and came with garlic bread. The truffle monkey bread looked delicious, but if you're trying to save a bit - the meatballs are cheaper and come with bread (not the same bread, but you get the picture). For dinner we both got the filet which came with a salad and roasted tomato. The steak was made to perfection with a delicious crust. As for the ambiance of the space, it's very fun old-school vibes - like a step back in time. Curved booths, lamps but not too dim of lighting, fun murals and decor. When we got to dessert, we were way too stuffed ... but we kept talking about how good the chocolate pie looked, and our waiter brought one on the house. Super nice! It was like a more dense, rich, decadent French silk pie with Oreo crust and chantilly cream. This is a solid 4.5. Only reason I don't give a 5 star is because that is a rarity for me and I have to really be blown away to give it. I mean there are a fair number of items available but the actual printer menu is enormous. One menu is the size of a regular table for two in Brooklyn. I had the Classic old fashioned. I don't normally order cocktails but this was great. Cocktails were pricey. They ranged from about $25 to $75 per drink. I wasn't hungry at the time, but I had a bite of my wife's burger. The food was absolutely fantastic (I was expecting to be underwhelmed following the hype). The whitefish Caesar is a must order and all the steaks we ordered were delicious. Our server Pasquale was also great. However, the table we were seated at for a party of 5 was absolutely criminal -- it was a small booth that Pasquale said usually sits 4 but the restaurant bad elected to squeeze larger groups in as of late. What was even more frustrating is we were directly across from what would have been a far more suitable 5-top, but only 4-tops were seated there (with an empty space at the end of the table at a potential booth seat). I absolutely understand the hype the restaurant is getting online, however ridiculously squeezing people into tiny booths isn't the way to do it. We didn't get drinks, but they had a lot of cocktail and wine/beer options to choose from. I considered going with one of the mocktails, but at $20 a pop I decided to pass. Ambiance (4/5): The inside feels super swanky with the red curtains and cool mural walls. The place feels like a speakeasy theater with tall ceilings. However, the inside is extremely dark and loud. The seating was spacious between parties, seating sometimes a step or two above level than your neighbors. Service (2/5): I had snagged reservations by scoping out Resy exactly at 9am and got a 7:45pm on a Friday. We were seated immediately at the time of our reservation. However, the timing of our service was terrible--We placed our drink orders to only have them arrive after our appetizers arrived. Our steaks were served without any steak knives that we had to request. While we had our waters refilled throughout the meal, I did not feel like we were attended to from how busy the staff was. Food Drinks are around $20 for a low-tier alcohol. Like $24 for a martini with Tito's?! The espresso martini was delicious but damn these drinks are not worth the price point! Akami (Tuna) Tartare $30 (2/5): My boyfriend did not find the dish fishy but I found every bite to have a pungent and sharp of fishy aftertaste. The dollop of fish was served with a side of 5 small bread pieces. Don't let the picture fool you as the serving size is quite small! Prime Rib Steak $100 (3/5): There isn't an option to cook the steak to your preferred wellness; either medium or well-done. The aged steak exterior was flavorful but not charred enough to have a crunch. The food horseradish was strong in flavor and the beef jus was a nice touch but did not amply the meal very much. Bacon side $17 (1/5): There are 2 slices of thick bacon that is seasoned with some pepper. I am in disbelief that I spent over $4 for this. There were no dipping sauces or any specialty items with this dish. Banana foster (4/5): This was probably the saving grace from this restaurant getting a 1-star. The waiter comes out to pour the foster sauce over the dish. The banana is caramelized and comes with a variety of toppings which I thought was a nice experience. Additionally, the establish provided a complimentary ice cream with a candle for our anniversary celebrating! That was so sweet. I was really hyped for this restaurant because I had gone to 4 Charles Prime Rib about month earlier. Knowing that some of the dishes are offered at Monkey Bar, I was excited to dine here. I was so disappointed! I would NOT recommend anyone outside of the city trying to dine here for dinner and compete for the reservation slots. read more

Absolutely LOVED this restaurant and the atmosphere that felt like a 1940's swing club. Very hard to find an atmosphere like this today! The bar area is dimly lit but very classy with small cocktail tables and a piano. On our next visit we definitely want to try sitting in the bar area. We did get seated pretty late after checking in for our reservation, and there's not a lot of space to wait (it was pretty crowded with a lot of people waiting), but our server and manager made up for it and offered an appetizer. It is a tad expensive of course, with drinks being all $20+, especially for the Cadillac margaritas, which I tried all three. The vodka rigatoni was great but I'm not sure I can say the same about the mashed potatoes sides. These are all meant to be shared but the mashed potatoes just did not do it for me, not used to the chicken jus that was in it.
