We have been wanting to visit this place for a long time since it's a local eatery with very old building and it's been known for a long time by the locals and recommended by many friends when we went there there were very few people inside the restaurant, kind of threw away that they might not be very popular But when we ordered the food, the food was absolutely amazing. It's very flava food juicy, but I felt that the Mongolian beef would have been more flavorful and had a little bit of cake because I asked him to make it spicy, but it was still sweet other than that. The fried fried noodles was amazing. The spring roll was great. The service is amazing. They brought the food very fast. We told them to make it less oily embedded that way the ambience of this place is not very great. It takes some special food to overcome the absolutely atrocious wait our party of four had at Monkey King last night and still get 4 stars from me. I'm not sure if they had an off night or were short staffed, but the service here was incredibly slow. I wouldn't recommend coming here if you are in a hurry. If I hadn't read all the good reviews before coming and was here with people who kept hyping the food, I probably would have left without ordering anything. We got sat reasonably quickly, but after that, it was downhill. The restaurant was probably 3/4ths full. We waited over 15 minutes before waters and menus were dropped off. Then we waited another 15 minutes before the server appeared to take drink orders. We just ordered everything at that time. It then took 45 minutes to get our food. They did bring out a free order of crab rangoon around 30 minutes in to apologize for the wait, but I'm really not sure what the hold up was. The staff didn't really explain, and the servers would disappear for long periods of time. Food was trickling out of the kitchen one dish at a time. Food delivery drivers were piling up in the front waiting for order. It was pretty crazy. The food trickled out at such a slow pace that the first person at our table to get food was half done with theirs by the time I got mine. I told the group to not wait on me and eat while it was hot. I got the Hawaii Chicken, and it was amazing. Some of the best Asian food I've ever had. It was sweet, spicy, and the chicken had an amazing crunch almost like a Korean fried chicken. The sauce was almost like a kung pao sauce, and had chilies in it. Very very good. I loved the heat level. Definitely worth the wait, but I recommend coming here when its not busy. read more

5 stars for great food and quick service! Finally a Chinese place with all the traditional favorites that remind me of my mom's cooking - salt and pepper shrimp, roast pork belly (so crispy!), roast duck, etc etc etc. The first time my husband and I came here, we couldn't decide and ended up going with a little bit of everything. I highly recommend doing this and eating family style if you've got a good group of hungry eaters! I don't really have complaints, except I wish maybe there was more complimentary rice. Also of note, my mom's a judgey eater (understandable, as I prefer her cooking too). However, she LOVES the ginger scallion chicken here so much that I order takeout every time she's in town now. (9th review of 2022) Coming from Hawaii has been a challenge trynna find a Chinese restaurant that's even somewhat close to the Chinese restaurants back home. I think we've found the closest here at Monkey King. The other Chinese restaurants that we've found have a ton of sauce in the dish, which makes it seem more like a soup. MK has sauce, but it's not overly saucy. The employees were very nice & gave helpful suggestions. We had the Stir Fried Egg Noodles w/ Chicken instead of pork $13.95, which wifey liked. They have Hong Kong style (thin) noodles instead of the chow mein noodles (a little thicker than HK noodles) that we're used to. I had the Mongolian Beef & the Yang Chow Fried Rice $13.95 each. The Yang Chow Fried Rice has shrimp & roasted pork. I'm glad they didn't have peas & carrots inside cause I don't like that in my fried rice. Wifey also got the Shrimp w/ Mixed Vegetables $14.95, which she liked. I also got the Chinese beer called Tsingtao $4.00 since they didn't receive their alcohol shipment that day. Wifey & I agreed that we'd go back to try some other dishes. I want to try their Taro w/ Pork Belly Pot (Kau Yuk) & their Singapore Chow Fun. Wifey doesn't eat a lot of pork/beef dishes. After Vegas I'm on the hunt for some good stir-fry udon noodles. I usually go to Sake Lounge for theirs which is delicious but wanted to find a Chinese style place. Monkey King with the sacha sauce is a lot taster than Asian House's stir-fry. They gave me hot oil on the side & that was fire so it will make anything taste good. Haha. This dish might've tasted way better served fresh in a plate so I might have to return for dine in. Restaurant seem like it had a bit of space. We visited 2 days ago- a Friday night- and had several dishes. The service was attentive and the food was prepared quickly. The roasted pork belly dish is a don't miss- crispy skin and tender and juicy meat. We had the Cantonese roasted duck, Mongolian beef, three delights, beef chow fun, and vegetables. All were delicious and portions were generous. There are not many good Chinese restaurants in the KC area, unfortunately, but this one is great and we will go back! read more

Hmmm, this is the most disappointing review i've done in a while. I really expected to love Monkey King and had almost made a specific trip from the Northland to Lenexa to try it a couple of times lately. Since we were on our way to an event nearby, I took advantage of our location and planned our pre-concert dinner here. With solid reviews and many by Yelp friends whose opinions I highly respect, I didn't expect this to be such an average review....I respect that many Asian -Americans love this place as authentic and close to family recipes or dishes they ate before moving here, but the "authentic" justification just didn't do it for me. I plead naiveté when judging authentic Cantonese. We ordered a half order of Crab Rangoon to share, my wife - the pork fried rice and I - the 2 meat BBQ; marinated pork and duck, and a side of lo mein; since the meat didn't come with noodles or rice. The Crab Rangoon was good - hot with a tasty filling. Although I clearly ordered a 1/2 order, we were brought and charged for a full order. Small issue #1. My wife's dish was soon brought out as were my noodles. After my wife had eaten 2 helpings of her tasty dish and had ventured outside for a smoke, only then was my BBQ finally delivered. Nothing more frustrating than going out to dinner together and being forced to eat independently. Even when my BBQ was delivered it was set at the edge of the table while clearly the dish was for me. It's certainly a first world problem by having to reach across the table to grab your plate, but is indicative of the poor customer service we were given the entire visit. We never saw our waitress again until much later when she walked by and shouted "Box?" from several feet away. Back to the food... my pork had a delicious marinade, yet an over abundance of fat. If that was my wish, I'd have ordered the pork belly. The duck had little taste, but lots of skin and cartilage. A big miss. For dropping a $50 bill + tip, I really wanted to enjoy the food more, but I'm willing to chalk that up to experimentation with new dishes, but I can't justify the lack of value and the terrible customer service. I called and ordered a whole Peking duck and a pound of roasted pork belly. The Peking duck was great and tasted delicious. The pork belly was a little overdid and dry and burnt on top. The service was quick and friendly. It was a little pricey but the food was worth it. The restaurant was packed with customers on a Sunday and it was nice and clean. I liked the wide variety of Chinese dishes (including Cantonese BBQ and Cantonese favorites) at this new restaurant, which is currently open only for takeout. My chicken with mixed vegetables takeout lunch ($8.95) was ready 12 minutes after I ordered at the counter. It had plenty of tasty, premium chicken, and a great variety of veggies in a tasty white sauce, with a generous portion of fried rice, and my choice of two sides. My first time eating at Monkey King BBQ & Noodles I came with my family. This location used to be an Asian Market hidden area in a small shopping area off of I-35 highway and 95th St. Inside the restaurant, it was very big and spacious - good for big groups! We decided to order a bunch of dishes to try since it was all so new to us. We ordered the 3 BBQ combo for $20. I chose: BBQ Pork, BBQ Pork Ribs, and Roasted Pork Belly. The BBQ Pork was on the sweet side, but good when eaten with rice and Sriracha on the side for spice. The Pork Ribs were okay in flavor, but a little too tough like it needed to be cooked longer since it didn't fall off the bone (The best kind of ribs to eat). The Roasted Pork Belly was the best one, it came with a side of hoisin sauce and I mixed it with a side of Sriracha/chili sauce. We also ordered the Honey Fried Chicken Wings which was too sweet for me, but it had a good crunch to it and the inside was cooked well (my biggest fear of eating Chicken is when it's raw still). The Coconut Walnut Shrimp was a bit too sweet as well than ABC Cafe. The Spicy Beef Tendon was okay, the flavor had that mouth numbing peppercorn spice to it. I liked how thinly sliced it was and it was served cold, not hot like when you get it for dim sum. The hot and sour/egg drop soups were both basic like any other Chinese takeout places. Always see this restaurant's parking lot full of cars on our trips to Costco so decided to stop in. WOW! What a pleasant surprise at how delicious it is. The owners were very friendly and helped explain some of the Cantonese specialties. Simple decor but includes some private rooms for larger parties. If you're looking for actual good Chinese this is where to go! Been here a handful of times and the food is always well flavored and delicious. One noteworthy point to make would be that no matter the time of day I've come here, the wait is always incredible. And not just to be seated, but to have anyone come by to bring you water while you wait. If you are not in a rush definitely worth the wait but still. Also, never seen a place so stingy with their shrimp. My boyfriend and I got two combo dishes and each got TWO shrimp. The serving sizes are huge so only getting two shrimp is pathetic since it's incorporated into the pricing of the dish. Ambiance is nice the place always feels very clean and well kept. Pretty slow for a Thursday night around 7:30pm. There were just three in our group and we were seated right away. Food came out pretty fast and restaurant seemed pretty clean. We ordered the salt and pepper squid, Singapore noodles, and the 2 bbq combo w the roasted pork belly and bbq pork. The squid was cooked properly, squid was soft and tender inside and crispy fried on the outside and seasoned well. The pork in the dishes were juicy and tender. We were a party of three. My spouse had chicken lo mein which was delicious and the other member of our party had a beef and noodle dish which she enjoyed very much. My walnut shrimp however was some of the worst glop that I have ever eaten. It was served with some kind of a white-ish sauce that looked like (well I am going to stop there) and had a very nondescript sort of sweet sort of lemon but oh so gloppy texture. The walnuts were few which was just as well because they tasted sweet like they were candied. The shrimp was fried in some kind of batter. All of this horrific entree was served atop a bed of lettuce. It was truly an awful combination of texture, flavor, color and presentation. Nothing about it was good. Looking for some awesome Pork Belly w/ Crackling skin in the KC area?! This place has got you covered! For years, I've been searching for a decent spot around the area that serves this classic Asian dish and I've not found it yet! Not only is it one of the only spots that have this dish, they do it WELL! The meat is always soft and juicy, never dry and the crackling skin is like a crispy pork chip! Honestly, I would come to this restaurant JUST for this dish. I've ordered from this restaurant a couple times already and each time I have, I've not been let down! The food is always bussin' and the price is not too bad either! As I mentioned earlier, I would definitely recommend their Pork Belly w/ Crackling Skin AND the Salt and Pepper Shrimp w/ the heads! They do both these dishes justice! The staff is always decently friendly and the place is pretty clean as well so no complaints here!
