I have been a fan of Monroes for 30 years. The food was consistently good and was a fair value. Today, my wife and two of our friends met for lunch. We were quickly seated and our drink order was taken. I noticed that the menus were newly printed, sometimes an indication that prices have changed. Sure enough, all prices had increased substantially from our last visit. My seafood enchiladas plate was $17.95. With an iced tea and tip, the meal was $25.00! I understand the need to pay more for servers, $25.00 for lunch is out of bounds. The food, portions,n service, etc, have not changed. Unfortunately, my wife and I will not be eating at Monroe's in the future. i hope they reconsider these ridiculous prices for Mexican (cheap) food. We sat on the elevated area of the restaurant to enjoy the quaint look and decoration. The server was nice and explained all the items of the menu for us. Our order came fast and was good. Monroe's is quickly becoming one of my favorite restaurants. They have traditional New Mexican food. The atmosphere varies from location to location, but my favorite is the San Mateo location. The staff there works as a team instead of the individual table. It makes for a less competitive and promotes the feeling of overall better service. This is one of the few restaurants in town that has a low-carb menu and is keto friendly. It even says on the menu how many carbs are in the meal. If you're eating carbs. The best chimichanga I've ever had. Did the whole bean chimi with red and green chillies on the side. Their chili sauces are fresh and actually have a kick to them. I was pleasantly surprised when we dined at Monroe's. I can make New Mexican food so I am pretty picky when it comes right down to it. I ordered a classic, Huevos Rancheros with red and green on the side. The eggs were cooked well, I wasn't a huge fan of the red Chile but the green Chile was fantastic. I smothered it all over! The beans were very tasty as were the potatoes. The sopapillas were ok, they were nice and fluffy and pretty but the flavor wasn't there. We had great service and the prices were pretty reasonable. They have local beer which is very nice and they are open for dinner which is great and we will be coming back for sure! read more

I wish I could give Monroe's more stars, it was fabulous! Outside dining was very pretty and gave for a nice atmosphere. Server was extremely friendly, he did get busy and wasn't the most attentive- but there are other employees that come around and refill drinks as needed. It was nice to see a team working together! Indian Taco w/ Carne Adovoda The flavor from carne was fantastic! I got both the red and green chile's on the side. Both had great flavor and was much spicer than I am use too. Not over bearing spicy though, just good heat. I was pleased that they took pride in the meal being flavorful, even when the locals would smother the dish in chiles. Apple Empanadas I was not prepared for this to also have chile pepper added to the apple. No wonder they serve it with vanilla ice cream. Still very yummy with the heat and sweet. Instead I went to another spot which lit me on fire with their real robust flavors and spice. Still good. So for you folks who don't want that first impression of red chile, Monroe's is the place. Unlike most restaurants, they have a team wait staff that will replenish drinks, bring food out in minutes time, and the check too. Kind of like a rotation. The food was very good, very filling. We have been looking all over for a restaurant who serves good fish and chips. We always go to Monroe's for Mexican food which we think is the best. Then we were told inside the restaurant to try on a Friday the fish and chips. Absolutely excellent! Usually during Lent we try different restaurants for the fish and chips, as a takeout! I am 100% going to need to come back and update this review because I stopped by for lunch and from what I've heard, breakfast is the time to come here. The best part about having lunch here is that the place is pretty empty and you get your food faster than you usually would (i assume). I had eaten New Mexican food the day before so I went for the green Chile cheeseburger and my mom got the enchilada plate. You never really expect burgers to be "mind blowingly" good at a New Mexican restaurant but this one was probably one of the better burgers I've had. I enjoyed my meal at Monroe's. I love all of the vegetarian options. I am not a vegetarian personal, but I do like a meat free option on a menu. They also have a gluten free menu which was nice for my friend who needs to be gluten free. I had the calabacitas enchiladas, Xmas. Both chiles had good flavor, and fairly nice heat to them. We came in with a large crowd a couple days ago and I was very impressed with your service. Now your food is to die for! I had the pasole and a tamale with red chili, which hit the spot for me. My fiancé had enchiladas that looked satisfyingly good! This place was so good, we came back here in our way back to Colorado. I ordered a smoothers breakfast burrito with red chili. Wow!! So good! I keep missing meatloaf night. Oh well. The food is great. Walked in, sat down, a nice young waitress came over and took our order. We started off with drinks, chips and salsa. Then came time to order dinner. Did have a small problem wrangling our waitress to order, but all was well shortly after. I had the fajita chicken chimichanga, no sides. A lemonade and a water to drink. The chicken was moist and flavorful, the texture was fresh and delicious. Exactly what I wanted from my visit. The soapapilla was a bit mushy. It didn't appear to have been fried correctly and that bugged me. Also as I was leaving I couldn't help but notice many other customers who had walked in and sat for a long time waiting for anyone to come and take their drink order. Tell your wait staff to get off their phones, keep their conversation to a light or minimum. I understand you like to visit with your coworkers, but you're on the clock. It's sad that my dining cohort had to walk over to the servers area to alert them that customers were waiting. Wait Staff are very friendly. They work on a buddy system here, not ome waiter is assigned to a certain area. I ordered the taco platter, meaning I'd have yummies left for tomorrow night's dinner in the hotel. Yelp and City Wide Data, you steered me in the right direction. I am not close to Sadies, but will be in the coming week. That is next on my list. Tonight I wanted tacos so bad, and these were good. I found nothing wrong with the meal. The refried beans where excellent, the rice was tops (rice happens to be one of my favorite parts of the meal.) The tacos were delicious, and the chips and salsa? fresh and just spicy enough, without being too hot. I don't like things too hot. What stood out was the way the taco was seasoned. I heard something among the servers Id' not heard before. A guy waiter told a female waitress that "I'll get that," when she tried to carry a few plates. You could see the team work, which another Yelp reviewer mentioned. I liked this place so much that I wish I could take my mom there sometime, as we like to eat Mexican food together. The cons were: The lighting was atrocious! I could hardly read the menu. When places use natural light, they need to make sure there's enough of it. 2. It took the server a long time to come to me, and take my order, even though all the other people had already had their orders taken. I think, had I not made eye contact, she'd have passed me up. I have probably been here about 5 times now, and we honestly just love this place. The atmosphere feels very laid back and homey, with all of the servers being focused on all of the tables instead of being assigned one in particular. It must work for them because we've never had bad service here and everyone is always welcoming and polite. We try different things from the menu each time, but my favorite so far is the chile relleño burrito. Somehow they're able to keep The relleño crispy inside, and they give a generous amount of chile and sides. The chile here is one of my favorites, and although I love both, their red is out of this world. I used to have my boyfriend ship it to me when I lived in Michigan. They also have my favorite chips and salsa in town, along with awesome sopapillas, making the whole meal such a treat. This is some of the best New Mexican food in Albuquerque. The chile is always tasty and the dishes are fresh and flavorful. Their salsa is yummy- hot but not burn your lips hot. Every time I've eaten there, the service is great. They have several expeditors, so your food never sits while you're waiting for it to come out. They have an average beverage selection. There are also choices for people who don't like chile on the menu, such as hamburgers and hot dogs. The atmosphere isn't anything trendy or fancy, but the food and prices are worth it! read more

Went to Monroe's for lunch and the service was fast and the food was hot. The taste was disappointing. I ordered the chimichanga which has all white meat shredded chicken. Very well made. If it had any seasoning I would have given it a 10! My friend had the super combination platter which was highly recommended by the waiter as a signature dish. My step-grandmother lives in Albuquerque and we stopped in to see her while we drove through ABQ. This was the place she wanted to go to for dinner and also highly recommended by other family members. The service was very good. I liked not having to wait to flag down our specific waiter just for some water or whatever. Everyone we encountered was very friendly too. Friendliness and helpfulness go a long way in my book. The food is decent quality and kind of what you expect in American style Mexican inspired family restaurants - i.e. gut-busting and covered in cheese. New Mexican or Mexican...whatevs...if its not trying to be authentic you know its gonna be covered in cheese and sauces. This is okay with me. I am not sure other reviewers were expecting from a place named Monroe's serving New Mexican/Mexican style food. I had the chile rellenos with red & green sauces. The hubby had the special which was some very large chimichanga. The step-g'ma had a flat enchilada with red sauce and small side of rice. (Big props to the staff for being accomodating to the small and a particular diet of an octogenarian who wanted something not really on the menu!) We were all pleased. The portions were huge (leftovers will definitely be had). The prices seem fair. Pros: Filling, satisfying food. Friendly, cheery staff. Very flexible in sub-ing or creating your own plate. Surprisingly stiff drinks (DD anyone?) Easy, comfortable atmosphere. Cons: Kinda difficult to get in & out of this place (very busy Osuna Rd); Although very satisfying & filling, this is probably not the healthiest of places to be eating on the regular. I've tried the tortilla burger with green chili and this past week I tried the regular green chili cheese burger! BOOM! How yummy it was! I'm rather picky when it comes to my burgers but I enjoyed the thinner patty that was cooked to a bit of crispy perfection, a soft bun, the right amount of melted cheddar and a tasty green chili with some heat! The side of sweet potato fries were also done to my liking (crispy and fresh).. So... the food was good --well at least what I've tried!
