Monroe's is a staple in my family. We love the team-style service at Monroe's where every server will be "your server" This leads to quick service and frequent drink refills without being annoying or pestering. We also love the food, it has enough of a variety that keeps up coming back for more and is consistently good food. My daughter (5) loves the cheesy tortilla with beans but will pick other things from the kids menu. My selections are all over the map. I will say that I am a HUGE fan of their carne adovada, and having them in tacos and enchiladas is delicious. My wife's favorites would be the green chile cheese burger... and the tamales.... and the enchiladas... ok so the menu... her favorite is the menu. Additionally, we enjoy their breakfast which is served all day cuz sometimes you just gotta get a breakfast skillet or burrito at 6pm. We have been coming here for years and it's for those reasons listed above that keeps us coming back for more. We typically visit the Osuna location but that's due to the proximity of where we live. We also frequent the Lomas location when we are in the area so don't feel that we prefer one location over the other as it is purely based on convenience. read more

As a superfan of NM in general, and while on a business trip, I've decided to embark on a enchilada comparison tour while in ABQ. My first stop was Monroe's nearby my hotel. They have a good location, with ample parking. Inside it's very airy with plenty of seating (I came for early dinner though). The chips and salsa are complimentary, and the salsa was good, or I was hungry from hiking. Of course I ordered the enchiladas, Christmas style (green and red chile). I was surprised and a little disappointed at the reasonable portions they gave me. It was not super sized, but maybe that's not a bad thing?! What I liked the most was that the chile was not spicy; it was savory and very pleasurable. In fact, the whole meal was pleasurable since I was not uncomfortably stuffed trying to finish it all. The one disappointing thing was the sopapilla. It was chewy and doughy, don't know how to describe it better, but I wouldn't want to have it again. That, by far was the worst rolled cheese enchilada plate I have ever eaten. I've been in Albuquerque since 1951 and I love my Mexican food, but when you have to use a knife and have to chew the cheese like it was taffy, no good. I t was cold to the touch and not much taste. Came here for our daughters birthday dinner. Good: Nice NE heights location, chips were delicious (greasy &hot!), attentive wait staff Not so great: Really mediocre food. My Chile Relleno had no heat, beans were pasty & plastic-like, salsa ok but salty, sopapillas weren't bad tasting but they were flat instead of fluffy. Corn syrup instead of real honey, yuck. Red chile had a floury taste. This place also needs a furniture overhaul. Tables are old, pink padded chairs are quite dirty and gross looking. As I looked around, most diners were white (like me). My Hispanic husband noted this immediately and predicted the food probably would lack flavor as this place is targeting their customer demographic. Unfortunately he was correct. Too bad. Monroe's is an ABQ staple. If you're from out of town, check it out. Its typical New Mexican food at its finest. The alacart breakfast burrito with Carne Adovada smothered in red chili is my favorite. They serve free chips and sala to large parties. Their salsa is among the best in ABQ. Efficient customer service and delicious food! My husband and I came here for dinner and were able to sit down immediately, even though the restaurant was full. We both ordered the taco platter, although I went with the ground beef and he got the carne adovada. Both were delicious, especially the carne adovada. They do a "team system", which is were you have your main server who takes your order, but everyone else will assist in your dining experience. Our waters were always filled, we were checked on frequently (not to the point it was annoying) and we received our check the moment we asked for it. All restaurants should have the team system. It's game changer! I think this might just be added to the rotation of New Mexican restaurants we go too. read more

Always our GO TO for a great meal. During self - quarantine we decided our first takeout curbside after a month of only homecooking had to be Monroe's. Telephone ordering, pick up timing and curbside pick up could not have been easier. Our usual favorites were delicious and did not disappoint. Ordered chips and salsa too. New Mexican restaurants just aren't what they used to be in this day and age. So, I've been trying different restaurants looking, hoping for that perfect cuisine that's unique to New Mexico. I have yet to find that particular restaurant that still serves this type of cuisine that I remember growing up in Albuquerque. So, I kept getting recommendations for Monroe's. Well, today I decided to give Monroe's a try... hoping with excitement that all the hype I've read and heard about this place would be true. Big letdown. They got me order wrong. The seasoned beef was very lightly colored and tasted more like ground turkey. Bleah! When I brought it to the waiter's attention, he simply said "Maybe next time you'll get the correct order- as if I was at fault. The portions were completely lacking when you compared it to their online pictures. The price they charge for these obscene portions is highway robbery! Not once did they try to make it right for a first time hopeful customer. They had several opportunities to do so. When I want New Mexican food, it's starting to get real damn difficult to figure out where to go. Naturally, around Albuquerque there are literally dozens of great places to go. Add Monroe's to the list. I ordered the ground beef taco plate and was very happy with it. Three hard shelled tacos, rice and bean. The rice was par, but the beans and tacos were delicious. My wife ordered ground beef enchilada's. When our food came, she dug into the enchilada's and discover they were chicken. Are you starting to wonder how they still received a 5-star review? The chicken enchiladas were so good she decided to keep them and never even brought it up to our server. Hindsight, we probably should have just given her an FYI since she was new and in training. So this place is the bomb! Went here once with husband and he did not like his tacos, telling me the meat was dry. However, came a second time with my parents and absolutely loved it! Salsa is great, service is above par, and restaurant is clean. After the bankruptcy of the more atmosphere-heavy, kid-friendly Gordunos chain, and after hearing that the uber-popular Sadie's was completely booked, we decided on Monroe's to satisfy our craving for New Mexican cuisine on our last night in Albuquerque. We made a reservation for a large group on a weeknight. On our arrival, the place was decked out in holiday lights and was buzzing with activity; Maybe 75% full. Chips and salsa landed on the table and were excellent. After ordering drinks, we got down to the serious business of ordering food. I chose my usual New Mexican test dish (green chile chicken enchiladas with blue corn). Rather than order Mexican for themselves, my kids chose their usual stuff (chicken fingers, hot dogs, etc.) off the extensive kids menu (Cowards!). My Margarita (listed as a "Premium Margarita") hit the table and was a real disappointment; It was far too sweet and obviously from a mix. Both my wife and my sister sampled it and decided NOT to get one for themselves. C'mon Monroe's!...How hard is it to mix up a batch of lime juice, tequila, and triple sec? I expected much better. The food arrived and the table went silent as everyone dug in. Though I enjoyed my meal ( I was hungry), I found the food a little underwhelming compared to other New Mexican food I've had. The green chile sauce was thinly applied and not nearly hot or flavorful enough. Chicken quality was good, but beans and rice were nothing special. I was wishing I had opted for whole beans rather than refried beans. The best part of Monroe's, without a doubt, was the service. The young wait staff worked as a team, and constantly filled waters and checked up on us. We felt well taken care of. It's the only thing saving Monoe's from a negative review. Next time the New Mexican food craving strikes in ABQ, I will make every attempt to try other places first. read more

I know, I'm a bad New Mexican never having eaten at Monroe's. Now that I have, I think I'm in love! I ordered the fajita quesadilla because I couldn't decide what I wanted, so why not a combination food? It was awesome. I am a picky eater who takes everything apart, but this was perfect, no picking required. Absolutely delicious. What I didn't like was the chaos in the dining room. There wasn't really one waiter or waitress for our table so it was kind of like catch someone in an apron when you needed something. As a carry out location, this place is a potluck staple at my work. A plate of tequitos from Monroe's is always a hit and always the first to run out. I probably would have really liked Monroe's if I'd gone there before going to Sadie's. Service was slow but I think we'd come in right after the big Sunday lunch rush and the staff was exhausted. Overall the food was good. The flat enchilladas (layered rather than rolled) were quite tasty and I highly recommend going with the blue corn tortillas. The taste of the blue corn holds up well against the filling and sauce and gives a wonderful earthiness to the overall taste. Aside from the slow service I have no complaints but can't really offer accolades either. The food was good but not spectacular. If you're local and hungry and nearby it's probably worth a trip but if I'm driving through the area again I probably won't bother to go back. read more

I was there with a friend whom I haven't seen in years and we were there for about 4 hours chatting and they never once pressured us to leave. We left a 100% tip and I was so satisfied with my meal! A life-long Albuquerquean invited me to lunch there, so I presumed the best. *sigh* She ordered the Green Chile Burger, I opted for the Cheese Enchiladas with blue corn and green as well as red chile sauce. The red chile sauce was fine, a little less bitter than most, actually. But where was the green? Is that you, green chile - you few, seemingly lost, soggy bits atop my blue corn? Beyond that, the food was tasty enough, though hardly among the best I've had. The dish was smothered in cheese, a little overboard even for cheese enchiladas, and the sopapillas were not the tender, yielding, fresh-feeling heavenly pillows I love at El Patio or Los Cuates. They had oily, crispy bottoms that almost fried what should be the greatest part of any New Mexican meal - drizzling honey on those bad boys to sooth the green chile burn (which, in this case, wasn't an issue anyway). The service was good (we were slower than the server more often than not) and the ambience was totally unremarkable, for better or for worse. All in all, maybe they make a brilliant Green Chile Burger, but I see no reason to choose Monroe's over other New Mexican restaurants like the ones mentioned above. So, if you get invited here by a beautiful member of whichever sex you find attractive, don't decline the offer, but don't be the one to invite others. read more

Monroes had a really nice catering package for Super Bowl we decided to try. This was a genius move. The ribs were sweet and tasty. The red chile wing sauce is the best wing sauce we ever had. Potato skins, a more than generous portion of chips, salsa, and queso made this family Super Bowl party super amazingly easy. Everything was fresh, well-packaged, and ready to go when we got there. I'm giving an average of 4 stars: 3 for the food and 5 for the service. Let me preface by stating that although I'm a native Burqueño (though lived away for 8.5 years), I had never been here. I finally went this past Saturday because my running group had our end-of-season banquet here. I was doubtful that 100+ people would fit comfortably in any restaurant, but surprisingly, we fit pretty well in the front space behind the hostess' stand. I was not blown away by the food. I didn't want to eat too much because I'd been snacking on chips and salsa and there was cake to eat at the end, so I only ordered a la carte: a chile relleno with green chile and a tamale with red chile. The chile relleno was pretty good, but the tamale was kind of meh. The texture of everything was good, but I didn't care for the flavor of the shredded pork. The red chile was mixed with flour and had that flavor that I can't quite pinpoint but that I don't love. The green chile was pretty good. My friend also ordered me a margarita and that was perfect. The chips and salsa were fine, nothing special. What really impressed me was the service. Imagine 100+ people crammed into a smallish area. The servers were attentive, food came out quickly, they kept everyone's order straight, and without a bat of an eye, they gave us each our own checks and let us pay from the table. They also didn't tack on the 18% gratuity that most places would for parties more than n=6 (I tipped 20%). They served the two large Costco cakes to the group, and were even attentive with drink refills. I was very impressed with how well-run the event was. I'm willing to come back just for the service. I'll probably try the one on Lomas next time, since they are closer to my house (or quicker to get to, at any rate). Kudos Monroe's for a job well done. read more
