We loved everything about this new spot in BK heights. The staff were attentive and friendly, the vibe is nostalgic and cool, and the food was delicious. The menu is curated and deliberate and there are lots of thoughtful details throughout, like old guest checks, a gum-ball machine, and consistent coffee refills. 10/10 would recommend for breakfast or lunch. It's diner food, but on a whole other level. I'm slowly making my way through their menu, but it's hard not to order repeats when it all tastes this good. Their menu has all the classics you want and lots of surprises you didn't know you needed. The staff is so kind, and even when they are slammed will stop what they're doing to bring you what you need. It's warm and cozy, it almost feels like you're on a film set. It's obviously they really thought this place out. If you're a morning person, get there for the early bird special. Or bring some friends for lunch and share their huge grilled cheese (+ orange wine!!) With a "pancake split" for dessert. And to my surprise it's a totally different vibe at night. Candles, chef specials, mood lighting, nice music. A beautiful date spot if your date has taste. Montague Diner is just what this neighborhood (and my belly) needed. read more

An exciting new addition to the neighborhood. Some service kinks still to work out (we had to ask for glasses of water halfway through our meal, etc.), as to be expected. We had the "early bird" special (eggs, toast, potatoes, choice of bacon/sausage, coffee and juice - $13.50): It was fine, basic, nothing special -- but I feel it *could* be, if ever-so-slightly (perhaps season the potatoes?), at least to distinguish it from the same combo at any ordinary diner that exists in the area (which charge less) . The plate also came without butter and jam, which for a place intended to be a take on the classic American diner, strikes me as an oversight. PSA: Save your money and eat elsewhere! We had the worst dinner we've had in the neighborhood since moving here 15 years ago. Brooklyn Heights and the surrounding neighborhoods are chock full of restaurants with great food and service - don't waste any time or money here - you'll pay $38 an entree paired with non-existent service. The service that was so bad it shocked even my kids. Tonight we were seated for a full 15 minutes before I was able to flag our waitress down (and even then I had to get the attention of another waiter who said he would get our waitress). This is despite the fact that the restaurant was 30 percent full at best on a Sunday night around 7:30 p.m. The waitress, who acted as if we were bothering her, took our order and, some time after, came back to say she'd forgotten what my daughter ordered. She finally got the order in and we got our food. The entrees we ordered were $38 each - not cheap by any means - and no one asked how our food was, causing me to hunt another waiter down (ours was nowhere to be found) to ask for salad dressing since mine came without any. At the end of our meal, I got up to find our waitress to say I we needed our check. She disappeared, presumably to get it, and never came back (I found her again and she said she'd forgot). This didn't seem like an isolated incidence - many of the reviews point to the same lack of service - and the wait staff seemed much more interested in talking to each other than any customers in the restaurant. When leaving the place, I asked to see the manager and was told that she'd left early, which did not surprise me in the slightest. read more

I've now been to the Montague Diner three times and after today's experience, I don't know if I will be returning. We ordered Diet Coke and didn't receive our drinks for almost an hour. We were then told they were out of Diet Coke when we asked where our drinks were. My friend found a tiny rock in her grain bowl and the tomato soup was beyond salty. Service was terrible. read more

Bottom line: not a vast selection of food you'd expect from a diner. Which is fine if the food was great but it's very mediocre, portions are small, and it's overpriced. Except the burger and fries which is adequately priced and tastes fine but that's about it. Have been here about 4 times and wanting to give it a chance but everything I've had except the burger was very small and not worth it. Some of the servers were fine, others go out of their way to ignore you. Hope it's just new restaurant syndrome. read more

Snagged the window booth for dinner the other night with another family (4 adults, 4 kids). Super cute spot, food was delicious and lots of choices for kids and adults (diner food is served all day with a more elevated additional menu for dinner). Mozzarella sticks, fries, burger and orecchiette (oh and ritz/Nutella and milkshake) were the fan favs, olives were my favorite and so yummy!!! Also solid beer and wine choices. Enjoy!! read more

Wow. I was impressed by this place! The atmosphere is great. The menu is small, usually when you go to a diner you expect a dictionary sized menu, but not here. They serve all day breakfast and are open til 11pm which is a treat in this neighborhood these days. Prices were similar to other diners in the area. The service was a little lackluster but nothing worth complaining about. I was really impressed with the food. All of my friends and I decided to opt for the Montague Burger. (Grilled onions, cheddar cheese, bacon, on a brioche bun with fries and a pickle $19). It was delicious! Very rarely do I order a medium rare burger and actually receive a medium rare burger. The fries were so crispy, the bacon was nice and thick and they didn't skimp out on it either. They had some great snack dishes, like roasted nuts and olives, which I love to see on a menu. They were very busy when we arrived (around 8:30pm) but were able to seat us immediately. They were pretty empty by time we left an hour later. The attention to detail in the atmosphere here is really appreciated. Outdoor seating is available, and subtle touches like the glass ketchup bottles and water glasses, and complimentary custom matchbooks on the hostess stand really make this place feel special. Editing after revisiting. The staff is lovely and very professional, many of them have extensive food service experience and it shows. We got to talking with the staff and they treated us to a milkshake. read more

I normally don't write reviews unless a place is either exceedingly great or incredibly awful. This place was terrible. We walked in around 7:15 on a Saturday morning and it was nearly empty. One table with 2 people and a few at the counter. It's clean and happy looking. We both ordered the early bird special of eggs, bacon or sausage, juice and coffee and potatoes. We asked about the grapefruit juice, whether it was pink or yellow. We were told it was definitely yellow. Out came 2 glow in the dark small glasses of pink juice. The coffee was very good but it was impossible to get a refill. Our waitress was constantly texting and we finally were able to get her attention for more coffee. About 30 minutes later our plates came out. I ordered crispy bacon. It was 2 nice thick slices, floppy and not crispy. I asked for wheat toast, my friend had white. They were both white. We even asked about the toast. I wanted wheat. Our waitress told us she "promises the wheat toast looks exactly like white." Funny because it also tasted exactly like white. The eggs were cold. The potatoes were browned but not at all crispy. Why it took 30 minutes for eggs bacon toast and potatoes in an empty restaurant, I don't know. We laughed it off and ate what we could. This place is so much fun. An instant neighborhood classic with a great vibe, kind and attentive staff, warm lighting and good acoustics (unlike most diners when theyre packed). I love the menu, its not overwhelming and has a bit of everything you might be looking for any time day or night. I personally love the fact that there are so many gluten free and dairy free options, something I can never really get at normal diners. I love that I can get a burger with a GF bun and its no biggie. Baked goods for dessert and delicious, and my daughter had her first gumball from the vintage machine- she'll never forget it! The Montague Diner is amazing. The food is genuinely fantastic. We ordered the omelette (mouth-watering), mozzarella sticks (delicious), a burger with the perfect fries, and an out-of-this-world slice of cake. The atmosphere is incredible, the service was surprisingly fast, our waitress was so kind, and the prices are extremely reasonable. I am so excited to try every single item on their menu.
