I think Montana is a dive bar. It's definitely a busy bar on weekend nights and the location near Olive & Denny make it a perfect place to meet a group of friends for a drink. It's fairly dark, has lots of wood and references to the state of Montana, and chatty bartenders. I was with a pretty big group both times I went and didn't feel out of place or unreasonably crowded. ...still not sure what I think of picklebacks, but apparently you haven't had the Montanyan experience until you have one. My favorite Moscow Mule in the city...and it comes on tap made with Rachel's Ginger Beer! It's one of the only places (to my knowledge) where you can get this drink in that format. They are cool about letting you bring in food to eat as well since they don't serve any. The bar itself is a total dive with writing all over the walls, super dark on the inside with tons of nooks and booths for people to sit in but it seems to be part of the charm. I find myself always enjoying a drink at this place with either a few friends or a group. Definitely a staple on Cap Hill and worth the visit. read more

I haven't had enough drinks here to know how good it is, but if you want to drop in somewhere in the day and happen to venture towards Capitol Hill, the isn't a bad option. The service is friendly and it's a little more than just "another divey" bar. They do have the whole $3-5 wells and have a few specials on the walls that are for the venturous drinkers. Dogs are absolutely allowed and the best thing is, if you order the Kedai Makan next door, you are more than welcomed to take it into Montana's for a sit down meal. Bathroom wise, it doesn't seem very clean because of all the graffiti or drawings on the wall, but it's actually well kept inside and not a dark, scary space in the wall. I've liked the Moscow Mule from The Zig Zag Cafe and Ba Bar, and the one here is not too far off from theirs. Still has a fresh light taste to it, and a VERY easy drink, which makes it 5x more dangerous than any other cocktails. I have no idea what the pickle back is, from seeing the reviews, I have to go back to try it someday. read more

Great dive-y bar on Capitol Hill. Unpretentious and fun. Order the Moscow Mule. It's that delicious. Also, it's mandatory that you get a pickleback with your friends (shot of whiskey chased with a shot of pickle juice). Also, be sure to carve out time for the next morning to nurse your hangover. I have been to Montana at least a dozen times in the past two years. Its a great place to hangout with friends. I usually have their specials listen on the board. My favorite is the Moscow mule which is usually my first drink here. Its a hipster place and one gets to see different kinds of folks here. I also recommend the pickle back shots. This bar is frickin' awesome. I regularly bring people to this bar who want to explore the cap hill area or are from out of town. It's unique, the cocktails are amazing, and the service is friendly and helpful. They have rotating cocktails on tap, which I was somewhat nervous about for maybe five seconds until I tried one (or two, or three..). My girlfriend has tried a strawberry chili margarita and I've done a watermelon fresco. This was a while ago, so I have no idea what they have currently. I'm definitely a sucker for the pickle back shots. They are So. Freaking. Amazing. You HAVE to try one. Just do it. The moscow mules are super amazing too with Rachel's homemade ginger beer. My only downside is that it is super loud in there. It's hard to hold a conversation and can sometimes become unbearable. It was also ridiculously small and hard to find a chair or table... BUT they did combine with the unit next to them and I haven't been there since it's expanded. I can't wait to check it out. :) read more

One of my favorite spots in Capital Hill. The pickle back is their claim to fame, along with the Malaysian take out place next door that you can munch on here. They make their own spicy pickle juice which you use to chase cheap whiskey or vodka. Wow!!! Our bartender was very friendly and helpful. Very cool divey bar. Very small with pretty limited seating, but if you can steal a table with your friends, you'll probably enjoy sitting around and talking for awhile, drinking PBR, or one of the several local microbrews or cocktails on tap. The crowd seemed pretty interesting and diverse. The bartender had a lot of patience for our indecision around drinks! The two or three food options they offer wouldn't sound good unless extremely intoxicated. But whether you fill up on food first or just make this a stop along the way, it's a great little place check in at on your night out on hill. read more

You can have sandwiches delivered from Dinette a few doors down, which is cool, but I need food when I'm drinking and it needs to be more substantial than a sandwich. I had to subtract a star due to hunger. Atmosphere. It isn't bad, but it also doesn't feel unique. There are some Montana license plates and state signs here and there, but it feels unfinished somehow. Perhaps that's because it is unfinished, but it sounds like it's been open for a few months at least. ..... Overall verdict: I'd definitely return for another tasty Moscow Mule, but I can't be a regular at a bar without food. Hopefully it'll appear in the future and I can update this review. read more

I love this place. It's dirty as fuck, the drinks are strong and cheap, and they have a black & white photo booth. They play early to mid-90s hip hop music over the speakers. You can draw on the walls. Right on, right on. Also, my family is from Montana so it's pretty legit to see all the Montana memorabilia up on the walls. First off, if you're a first timer, how are you supposed to know there is a drink counter where you order your drink? Montana has THE BEST DRINKS EVER. Moscow Mule. Gimlet on tap. I recently had a rhubarb Moscow mule, and a strawberry wine cooler, and they were both delicious. So wonderful! And so cheap! Well... pretty cheap as far as cocktails in Seattle go... like $6 for a Gimlet or something. Anyway, they are just the best drinks ever. And the friendliest people work there. The place is a little small and too dark when it isn't totally dark outside. Also the food is pretty terrible ("nachos" = a few chips with Velveeta cheese and a chopped up jalapeno on top). A neon state outline of Montana lights the way to beer and cocktails on tap. How can you possibly say no to that? The space is dark, divey, and easily feels like your next favorite neighborhood watering hole. There are wooden booths good for groups in the main space, a handful of seats front and center at the small bar, and a window nook perfect for people watching. And the ladies who run this spot provide fantastic and friendly service. There are $2 beers and $3 wells during happy hour, as well as a couple of rotating cocktails on tap. We had pints of Moscow mule to wash down a skillet of nachos (currently the only food available, but it was surprisingly perfect and satisfying). read more

Had a fun time here. It's your typical dive bar with a hipster Seattle vibe. The walls are covered in writing and fun signs. (Some of the writing is quite profane, but whatever, adds to the experience) It's super cool that they've got cocktails on tap! (Had a Moscow mule which was delicious) This place is loud and crowded, which is perfect if you're into that, but could be annoying. Not a ton of space, but there are some nice private booths in the back room. It's also nice that they have a little area outside for smoking/getting some air. read more

Short review. This place is cool. Hipsters (ironic and non-ironic) mixing with the trendy and the, ever-elusive, Seattle hicks. Cool Montana dive vibe and the background Kanye was a good juxtaposition. The big negative is the lack of space but I believe that I saw signs for an expansion party on 2/24/13...so this might not be an issue for long. Strong drinks. Decent prices. Nice people. Had a blast here. Grafiti, pictures and stickers everywhere give it a really personal feel. The bartender was incredibly fun and friendly. The music selection was high energy and fun. Drinks were about $5 during happy hour or about $7 afterwards... pretty standard. Drinks were stiff. The moscow mule was ok. I prefer my ginger beer with more of a ginger bite and a little bit of carbonation.. It mostly tasted like flat lime juice. Maybe I got a bad batch. I went here on a Tuesday looking for food and drinks, I didn't know what to expect after I couldn't find a menu online. The frito pie and nachos weren't going to cut it, so I opted for just drinks. My friend had a pint size Moscow Mule, huge, and didn't taste bad. I had the Martinez, not good at first, but grew on me. Having the drinks on tap is a fun new idea, but I guess mainly to save on labor. Great place if you want hole in the wall, but I think they are trying too hard to be divey.
