I've read the other reviews for this restaurant and I must say I feel they are a little misleading. The experience I had at this establishment was very poor. I even joked with my S.O. that it felt like we were in an episode of Kitchen Nightmares. To begin, upon arriving the staff with one woman in particular, was very odd. The woman of which I speak I believe may be the owner, I can only assume this because of her persona. My S.O. and I were having a somewhat rough day and decided to go out for dinner. We thought we would try Montego Bay Grille because we like to support local business and we knew the restaurant was new. When we first got there the assumed owner jumped ahead of other staff to greet us as we were sitting down. She first made a fuss about the chair I was about to sit in because she thought I wasn't bright enough to understand it couldn't slide out but instead had to be lifted and moved to sit in, so she took it upon herself to move my chair for me while giving me a rather small lecture on it. Once we had sat down she began to tell us about their drink specials only to go and make what I assume was a poor attempt at a joke on our age. She was very insulting and told us she needed to see our id's although neither of us had even asked for the drinks or attempted to order any, yet we are both of age so we showed her our drivers licenses because we weren't sure if the restaurant was 21 and over. After the strange interaction we had with her our actual waitress took our order and she seemed overall lost at her job. Meanwhile the assumed owner watched us from afar the rest of the evening. It was all very odd, and uncomfortable. Now to the food. My S.O. ordered the steak and shrimp. The (small) steak was requested medium well but was cooked well done in some spots and medium rare in others. I ordered the jerk chicken which was undercooked and completely rare in some areas. The sides to the dishes were carrots that were cooked in oil and had some herbs on them (nothing special), a baked potato (with the steak) seemingly the only thing cooked right, and red beans and rice (with the jerk chicken) that were bland as can be. Each meal was $15+ and definitely overpriced for how it tasted. The drinks come in skinny, small glasses so you need refills more than your average restaurant. The atmosphere was honestly the only thing I don't have anything negative to comment on. It was mediocre at best. The paint is a nice bright blue and they have some basic art on the walls. The music was awful reggae covers of every pop song popular right now. We will not be making another visit to this establishment. read more

Friend and I met for lunch and we have decided to try local and independent restaurants. We were pretty excited to try this restaurant because of the high ratings. Needless to say, we were soo not impressed by the food or service. It started out ok. I had the jerk chicken in a box, and friend had the Fish n Chips. My jerk chicken was bland. But very tender. That's a plus. My friend's dish did not look appealing at all. It looked over cooked and she kept trying to make me try it and I totally refused. She said it was nasty. It looked like it. We both agreed that the potato wedges were good. Friend tried my jerk chicken, she have never had it. She thought it was "okay". I told her that it wasn't real deal jerk. They gave me a small container of jerk sauce that was not full. It was practically empty. So I asked my server for more sauce. She told me that they usually charge for extra but she will give it to me for free. Ok! Stop it right there! Nobody wants to hear that. Either charge me or shut up. That's an HUGE turn-off for anybody to say to a customer. And she confirmed that she did not see how much sauce the chef gave me. That really threw us off. Later she asked us about our food. I had to express to her that I'm used to jerk chicken being more black with more kick and zing to it. She explained that everyone cannot eat spicy food. Well, if I'm not mistaken, that defeats it being jerk. It was more like bland grilled chicken for the diabetes. And she kept going on about the process of them marinating and this ant that and we just wanted her away from our table. The key lime cheesecake was good which I believe is from an outside vendor. My friend had some type of blue mixed drink. She said that was the highlight of the meal. After all the rudeness from the server, we still left a nice tip. Somebody remind me to stop doing that. Let me say first I seldom give five stars. This new restrauant was a delightful surprise. I had the jerk chicken, which looks just like the picture, and the taste was amazing. It was spicey and a little heat but not overwhelming. It was all fresh and cooked with very healthy . I would have liked bigger pieces of vegetables. The white sangria was perfect with it. Amazing! I wasn't sure what to expect, but we attended a special prix fixe menu for the holiday and it was impressive. The menu was jerk chicken, rice, and a grilled asparagus. It was fantastic. There is a nice, spice homemade jerk sauce served alongside the half chicken. It's the right blend of sweet and spicy to make your tastebuds sing. And the char on the chicken was just right. It was well cooked, nice juicy breast, and thigh meat falling off the bone. This restaurant is exactly what Hobart needed to spice up the local dinner scene. I frequent this establishment with my entire family as often as possible (at least once a month, sometimes more). The shrimp tacos are my absolute favorite - and since I'm not a Huge fan of a lot of jerk sauce, I like that it comes on the side, so I can keep mine down to a tolerable heat. We tried Montego last week and my husband will not stop talking about the jerk chicken that he had! He loved the flavor of the sauce and how it was not super spicy but still had a good amount of heat. His chicken was juicy and not overcooked as he says that is a common problem with jerk chicken. I ordered the lobster ravioli and it was good. I didn't give this place a full 5 star rating simply because it was brutally hot in there. I don't think the air conditioning was working. Also, the crab cake appetizer was way overpriced. It was one crab cake that was smaller in size for $8. I've never received a crab cake that small in a restaurant by itself, it was more appropriately sized to be served in multiples. Four bites and it was gone, so not worth the money regardless of how delicious it was. read more

Went there for dinner with my family and P's. Knowing it was a new business to downtown, we had open minds. We weren't disappointed. This place was clean, open, nice music in the background, and great staff and service. We ordered multiple apps; 2 chicken sates, both of which were well done and a great sauce, and 2 orders of crab cakes, cooked perfectly (1 was delayed as the chef wanted to assure it was done properly) and a great avocado aioli. The entrees; lobster ravioli was good, as the first thing you tasted was the lobster, a jerk salmon, which was "some of the best salmon and moist, I've ever had", and a jerk chicken, which was grilled perfectly and the jerk sauce gave a great heat and flavor, but didn't overwhelm the dish. Lastly, we had deserts: pineapple cakes were great. A nice Carmel sauce on the cake with the pineapple was a great addition, and banana crem brûlées were on point. After the meal, Teddy came out to ask how things were, and we elaborated how good everything was, and we will definitely be going back. Rice and peas were watery, soggy, mushy. Best part was the veggies. Not to mention the presentation, huge container with no compartment so you'd think it was full - nooope! Tray so empty food was sliding all around in there. For $20 I expect more. Sad because no other places local that offer this variety of food. Won't be returning or recommending to anyone!
