I am suing NW Premium Hardwood Floors because although I paid them in full for replacing the floor…read morein one of the rooms in my house, I ended up without the floor and with an unusable room. NW Floors refused to even admit that they screwed up let alone fix the problem. Long story follows. I hired them to replace carpet with hardwood in one of the bedrooms. Once they removed the carpet, a strong smell appeared in the room. The workers and the owner first insisted that they do not notice it and then said it is normal and will disappear shortly. As this was the first time I had a floor installed I thought maybe the smell is from the glues or fillers they use during the install so I allowed them to persuade me. They proceeded with finishing the floor and I paid them. A month later the room still smells to the point it is uncomfortable to stay in it. I called the owner, he was reluctant to do anything and insisted that we wait. Another month later the room still smells. I called the owner but he didn't return my calls. It was busy time with my work and I still hoped that the smell will disappear. Therefore I waited a couple months more with the room still unusable. I then called the company that supplied the wood. A representative stopped by, walked into the room, said he doesn't want to stay there a minute longer because of the smell and told me that most likely the smell is coming from the subfloor, i.e. the plywood onto which the hardwood is nailed. So it is not an unheard of problem, it seems. The owner of NW Floors still didn't return my calls. So I sent him a certified letter. That got his attention, he stopped by and said he doesn't smell anything. No surprise there because he was wearing a really thick coat of cologne. Have you ever met a contractor wearing cologne on the job? Anyway, he said if I wanted to fix all smells properly, he can lift the floor so that I can seal the subfloor. We will have to refinish then, he said. That sounded ok because refinish should cost less than the full install, right? I asked how much, he didn't say. So he started removing the floor. I looked at what he was doing and it was pretty clear that the wood will not be reusable. Once the floor was removed, the room was stinking really bad. The subfloor was really smelly. I put several coats of floor sealant on it and that took care of the smell. I then called NW Floors to put the floor back. The owner asked me to pay the full price of the install again. I said, I just paid you and ended up without the floor because you guys choose to ignore the smell despite my concerns. Why should I pay you the full amount again? What about the warranty you mention in the contract? In response he offered me 15% discount and said he is being very helpful. I disagreed, and he stopped returning my calls. So I hired another company to finish the job and now I'm going to court after NW Floors to recover the money I paid them. The job itself was not done very well either, definitely not "premium". For example, when I inspected the installed floor it turned out that the floor at the entrance of the room is at least a full inch lower than the rest of the room, so when you walk in you clearly walk uphill. It wasn't noticeable with the carpet, but was very clear with the hardwood. NW Floors just shrugged that off as normal. The other company I hired simply added some shims so that the floor is even. Then there are little things like leaving a lot of dings and scratches on the walls of the room or washing the finish off the tools into my landscaping. I mean, it might not be great landscaping, but I don't think washing some chemicals all over it is warranted. The owner is usually late. I get it, he has three kids and needs to pick them up. But I am a parent too and I am on time usually. Bottom line, everyone makes mistakes and no contractor is perfect. But any decent one would admit the mistake and try to fix it. I was trying my best to work with NW Floors to resolve the issues with the job they did. But the owner insisted that there are no issues and basically ignored my concerns. Why would I bother calling him if there were no issues? I suggest anyone who considers hiring him keep in mind that if anything goes wrong, you will be similarly ignored.

I can't say enough good things about the work done by NW Premium Hardwood Floors. We had them…read morerefinish the original (1960s) hardwood floors of our home shortly after we closed on the house. We wanted to get the floors done before we moved in, but that left us with a limited time window to complete the work. I contacted NW Premium Hardwood Floors and they came out the same day to measure the floors and give us an in person estimate. The estimate was between $500 and $2000 lower than other companies quoted, and they could do the job within a week, which was perfect for us. I liked what I saw in reviews and photos on their website and other sites, so we ended up agreeing to terms and the work was done the week before we moved in. We expected that the floors would just be sanded and refinished, but the workers had serious attention to detail and really focused on doing quality work. They showed us a few boards that needed to be replaced and took care of that, but they were able to restore and preserve almost all of the original floor with careful and skillful work. The Swedish finish they used was intense smelling for about a week afterward, but the results are amazing and better than expected. I'm so glad we made this investment in our new home, and we highly recommend this company to our friends and coworkers when they ask who did the floors for us. No regrets!

Nearly 8 weeks after the initial faulty install, the company has evaded our persistent requests to correct the installation. Given the frustrating and exhausting experience of working with this company, I would never recommend them and would advise anyone interested in hiring them to steer clear. For those interested, here is a detailed account of our experience: - We scheduled the initial installation, and to our surprise, the installation crew called a week early to say they were on their way. We told them it was the wrong week and they could not come that day. - No one called us to apologize or reschedule. Instead, we made several calls and sent an email to our salesperson, Scott Whitmarsh, and the job was rescheduled to begin on the date originally agreed. - As for the installation, I will preface this by saying that Scott proudly sold us on the fact that this company hires craftsman to install floors, as compared to the inexperienced flooring installers that may be found at somewhere like Lowes. - The crew that came to install our floors were clearly inexperienced and unqualified to complete the job. While they managed to adequately lay the floors in the living and kitchen area, they neglected to level the subfloor at any point, which became an issue with the bedroom installation. The bedroom LVP floors have high and low spots that visibly bow when stepped on. The company has repeatedly evaded our requests to properly level the floors and redo the installation. We have persisted for nearly 8 weeks at this point to have the bedroom installation completed properly. - The crew also installed baseboards. Some of our original baseboards were damaged during the flooring removal and dry out process from the flood, so we needed the same type of baseboard installed where the old ones were missing. The baseboards were the wrong size, but the crew installed them nonetheless, never voicing to us while there that the boards were the wrong size. In fact, it turned out that they installed baseboards of two different sizes, which were both different from our original baseboards. - The baseboard joints showed very poor craftsmanship, with large gaps and joints that were poorly cut. See photos. - The quarter round installed at our front and balcony threshold were noticeably damaged during install. - Several of the baseboards were damaged during installation. - The baseboards in the bedroom closet were installed misaligned so that the closet doors no longer close properly. - The crew used silicone to caulk the baseboard joints, which is not a paintable surface. We discovered this when our painter came to paint our walls and pointed out where the paint would not adhere to the areas near the baseboards that were covered with silicone caulk. - After much complaining, it was agreed that a more experienced crew would come back to properly install the baseboards. - When the day came, the same crew arrived. - We called to say that was not acceptable, and later that day a different person came to perform and supervise the baseboard re-installation. - This more experienced person also trimmed some of the LVP boards in the bedroom to see if that would correct the bowing. It did not. - We continue to work with the company to correct the poor bedroom install. However, given all we've been through, we would advise anyone looking for new floors to shop elsewhere.

This project is in process, but I Scott has been a knowledgible and responsive resource for a complicated project. Meanwhile, my husband and I needed to replace the very tired carpet in our home. As our knowledge of carpeting was nil, Scott started us with an overview and primer, asking many questions about our home, lifestyle and priorities (small spaces, high traffic, 70 pound dog, quality, aesthetics, feel) so he could make the best product recommendations. Within a couple of hours we walked out with three sample boards, mulled them over in our home and made exactly the right selection. Three weeks later we have beautiful new carpet installed by Raoul and Jon, their in-house installation team who were a delight to work with. I am very particular about installation, both process and care for details. These are craftsman who are rightly proud of their work.
