For those that never been here before, Monterey Auto is located conveniently at the corner of Monterey and Old Tully, so you can enter it before you get to Monterey Rd from Old Tully. (make a left before the end of Old Tully) Now as for my experience, they exceeded my expectation. (but then, I came here on a Monday around noon when no one was in front of me). Andy, the owner, is the man you have to talk to first. He gives reasonable rates, so be nice to him. Look in the Moneymailer.com website for their latest coupon to get the best deals. (i.e. smog, A/C, coolant, brakes, 30K/60K/90K). This is a great place to go if your car can tolerate bulk conventional oil. I highly recommend it. I will be back for future oil changes and smog checks. Too bad they are far away but if you are in east San Jose, bring your cars here. read more

Called a few days before I brought my 2011 Ford Fusion in for a 120k service. They said to bring it by on a Thursday morning and I'll have it back that afternoon. Brought it in on the day specified. They called and it was ready to pick up around 3pm. No muss, no fuss. Easy and quick. A few weeks later my wife & I made a road trip to Vegas (Baby). The fusion ran like a top and I got about 400+ miles per tank (would have been more. but I forgot to check tire pressures before we left). All in all, a good experience with this shop. read more

My dad has been taking our family cars here for years. Now that I'm old enough and have my own car, I do the dreaded task of taking my car in also. I always think I'm getting ripped off when I have to take my car in to other places because A) I'm cynical like that and B) I know next to nothing about cars or what might be wrong with mine. I've never gotten that feeling here. I just got my smog check and oil changed here today. Both the guys working were friendly and work was done in the quoted time of 1 hour. Cheaper than lots of places...I believe the smog check was under $40. (Passed with flying colors!) I'll continue to bring my car here...let's hope it's good for a while. read more

Please, for the love of your car and your sanity, go somewhere else! This is the customer care approach at Monterey Auto: "Go ahead and sue me. I'll beat you like I beat the last person. I have a very good lawyer." Finally, after seven months, the sad saga of Andy and Monterey Auto draws to a close. Apparently, someone at Monterey left some sort of plastic object inside the transmission, causing all the troubles we reported way back in December and January, and eventually damaging the clutch and flywheel to the point that they had to be replaced. And ONLY after having to get AAA *and* the California Bureau of Automotive Repairs involved, after haranguing and arguing with Andy, after having the BAR representative recommend that we sue him and AAA threaten to have his AAA approval rescinded, he finally relented and paid to undo his damage. That said, he gets 1 star for not actually making us take him to court. read more

I loved this garage. Took all my cars there for years, they even helped me spur of the moment, and always asked me to come in before 9 to look at the car - no problems at all. Today, for the 1st time I didn't call before coming - I was just there a week ago, and just showed up at 9 (they open at 8 M-S). The shop is closed! All doors shut, including garage doors. Nothing personal inside, even computer is gone. No notice on door, nothing. I called Morgan Hill Auto Body 'cause they're down the street, they said it had sold out to a big trucking company run out of Los Banos. They recommended Auto Solutions on Railroad Ave. for my Japanese-made cars. At least I'm taken care of, but all my cars' years of auto history are gone (besides my mounds of paper) - without any notice. And I had to sleuth to figure out they're gone too! The building does still say Monterey Auto Service in giant letters. I know I'm not the only long-time customer, so I hope this information reaches a few of you. read more

Andy always has a smile on his face and he's the owner of the shop. My philosophy is the owner always performs best because his business is his baby. Plus, the mom and pop shops give you the best deals and you don't have to worry about being ripped off. Got the job done but man. There were 2 men who walked by me as i approached the office. I haven't been here before so I didnt know where to go. I stopped and said hi and to ask if they had time for an oil change. Both ignored me and kept walking. The man i talked to was also rude. He never even said hi. Just told me to fill out a form and went on his way. I got there at 11. And left at 11:45!! An oil change takes 10 minutes so I'm still not sure why I was there for that long. The only reason I'm giving 2 stats is because they were nice enough to give me a list of things that needed to be done to my car. No one else has ever done this before read more

My family has been taking our cars here for the last 3-4 years and the staff treats us honestly and fairly. I know that people tend to give them crap from their shady location and assume its just another "Vietnamese auto shop" that will try to rip you off. But to be honest, they are very legit and they really do a great job. They even go out of their way to make sure you can continue on with your day by giving you rides. Don't go to this place. Slow work, these guys seem doesn't know what to do with my car. They diagnosed the wrong cause and was going to replace the original part and several hours later found out the problem at another though I told them to check the problem at the other first. They charged me almost twice the estimated price and wasted my 4hrs just for nothing, they took only 1 and a half hr to fix the real problem. Don't waste you time and money here. read more

My dad for some reason loves to have me bring my car's to this place. How can i argue when he ends up paying for most of the bill anyway? Well i can argue, 4 times i've had car's in there and all 4 times the car's either come out WORSE or in the EXACT same condition they went in. I had a transmission put in last year on my car, as soon as i drove it off the lot the car stalled at the light on Tully Road. I somehow made it home, but had to have the car towed back there the next day for them to get the thing running again, somehow they didn't charge me for that, miraculous. I just got my car back out of their shop yesterday. They did a diagnosis, engine running rough and black smoke...wow all those years and certifications to tell me something that i figured out instantly, so my dad also wants to have them smog the car. $700 later i have a can that has been smogged. They claim to have road tested it, their assesment on the road test, "Road test vehicle found good at this time." Well i don't know what their definition of "good" is but when i went to pick up the car, they handed me the keys i made the payment and they immediately closed the place down 10 minutes early which i found a bit odd. I started the car up and it was a bit rough which i figured was from sitting for a couple days and it was cold. I drove the car to my dads who lives only a few blocks away. The thing was running ROUGHER than when it went in, and last night i went to the 7-11 off Tully and Senter which is literally 3 blocks away. when i got in the car to leave 7-11 the damn thing wouldn't start. They charged $700 to have a car pass smog. Also they "Repair vacuum leaks" with the lack of compression i'm getting from the car i doubt that very seriously. I keep telling my dad to stop going to them, i did leave them a message on their answering machine expressing my disappointment in their workmanship. i would trust pep boys or somewhere like that before ever trusting this place. I knew they were scammers right from the start but i just can't convince my dad of it. Steer clear of this place or you will be finding that you just paid these people to do nothing. $500 labor to put on motor mounts and to change a water pump. wow. oh but lets not forget "repair vacuum leaks." read more
