These guys have no idea what they're doing and are way understaffed. Every statement made by them seems like a guess. They will waste your time and speculate on what's wrong with your car without doing any diagnostic work. Lost a good amount of money because of them. Would not recommend. read more

The service engine light come up and after searching on line I found "Townsend's Automotive" and from the review it was a good auto shop, far from it. Larry gave me a written estimate around 626.00 which in a day it balloons to $2171.94,he changed the oxygen sensors and the crank sensor, the labor was the bulk of the bill, saying the they have to re progams the software I picked up the car and just a block away the service light started blinking. Drove back and He told me that the sensor for the crank was not the original, this made the light go off, He promised to order it and He wont charge me for the extra labor or sensor. After a week the sensor arrived and i brought back the car, after few days I went to pick the car but the light was till blinking so he started to tell me that he couldn't align the sensor with the crank, something on that line. So he suggested me to do something else, all of this with no charge, after a week the situation was the same , at the point I decided to bring the car to the auto dealer. They found out the the light was due to a decompress cylinder and leaking in another, basically a misfired, another $ 300.00. Basically I paid $ 2000 and I waste almost 3 weeks for nothing, yes sure he changed the sensors but probably they were not to be changed, he worked on my car but nothing change. On the last invoice he wrote , I quote " installed third crank sensor, different make, performed relearn , accepted but may not complete, WILL REFUND PORTION OF THE PAYMENT TO CLIENT if we can not perform relearn and do not finish repair PO335, PO315 " I talked with him 3 weeks ago about the partial payment, but so far i did not received a dime from Larry, his yard is always busy I wonder if this happened to any body beside my self. read more

Not being from the bay area originally, I have been to several shops in San Jose and they seemed very VERY overpriced and the shop always gave me a huge list of everything wrong that had to be fixed IMMEDIATELY. Finding Larry's shop was a Godsend. Right from the start he was open and honest about what was wrong with my car. He repaired the car in the timeframe he gave me. He did find one thing while working on the car that he suggested, gave me the cost, and how much I would save doing it at the same time. Since is was not a huge amount, we went ahead and fixed it. When we picked the car up, the quoted amount was the exact amount owed. No hidden fees or charges. Larry showed us the parts from our car, and explained what he did. I knew here were other things that needed to be fixed, but did not mention them. Instead waiting to hear if the other mechanics were right. He made recommendations, and a timeline for repair but at no time did he make me feel like I had to do everything at once or right now. I was given a list and pricing, for future decisions about repairs. I appreciate how friendly they are at this shop. Never making you feel inferior or stupid because you might not understand all the working parts of your car. Larry takes the time and care to explain everything to you. I love that we could talk a little football while we were there :) I highly recommend this mechanic if you need any work done. He is affordable compared to the other mechanics in San Jose. Larry Townsend is fantastic! I am so glad to find a trustworthy mechanic for my elderly Audi wagon. Townsend's is reliable, respectful, and affordable. Ladies, how many mechanics do you know who would treat you with respect and honesty instead of trying to upsell unnecessary work or just try to con you? His shop is near my apartment and folks on Nextdoor recommended him all the time. I've seen German cars out front so I figured he was worth a try even if he's not an Audi specialist. I wrench on my own car, but sometimes things are over my skill level. Larry's done a few jobs for me by now: small things like replacing bad connectors (I don't do electrical) to an overhaul of the AC system (lots of troubleshooting leaky valves and I don't do refrigerant) and now some automatic transmission work. (I scraped up the gasket surface on my transmission pan when I dropped it to change the filter--oops!) He looked up the new gasket online while I was on the phone for an estimate, to make sure it was available. He suggested the OEM one from the transmission maker, not the stealership one. Everything he said was consistent with what I'd researched at ECS Tuning when I was still thinking of redoing it myself. He also checked out the tailshaft bearings to make sure it would be OK to change that seal without getting a new driveshaft. His estimate for the labor on the tailshaft seal is reasonable enough I'll probably pay him to do it next month so I don't waste time I could spend on my own business. I've seen a lot of different makes in front of his shop, so don't hesitate just because your car is Japanese, American, or whatever. If he doesn't work on whatever you drive, he'd be honest enough to let you know instead of trying to wing it and messing up. read more

I highly recommend this place. Larry is a great, honest guy. He does not overcharge and will tell you if you don't need a service whereas other mechanics would take advantage of certain people and situations. For instance, the guys over at my dealership keep trying to sell me tires, saying my tires looked bad... Larry told me that there is nothing wrong with my tires! There are many things that he could've charged me for, but he's honest. Finding this kind of service is rare. read more

I took my car here because of the good reviews and it is close by. I have (note tense) a grinding noise in my car wheni turn left at speed, which is worrying. They promised to check it out (for $185) and told me my brakes needed attention, although they didn't hear the noise. They tried to sell me other stuff but really, I can't afford it. They fixed the brakes, which took all day and cost more than most ($600, inspection rolled into price), which did improve them substantially, but next time I got off the freeway I heard the grinding noise again. I'll be seeing Pablo tomorrow, and I'll let you know how that works out. Townsend's seems knowledgeable and articulate (although they didn't find my problem, but fixed another one that admittedly did need it) but I suspect are aimed at Downtown techie types instead of aged poor people like me. You better have more than one car you use if you choose this shop. Car was in the shop WAY too long....we're talking WEEKS! Very busy shop & apparently not enough staff. Shop manager very nice & friendly, tho sometimes appears sometimes frustrated. In his efforts to make his customer happy, he TRIES to be helpful by promising a SHORT time span as to when car would be finished, but doesn't always deliver: When calling for status as the promised time approaches, or the the allotted time has passed, he sincerely apologizes and then EXTENDS the "window" out a little further (due to being busy), and so it goes again...again. Maybe the back shop needs a separate manager to monitor time so the owner/manager can continue with the great customer service he has and doesn't have to be bouncing back & forth, and cars can get out quickly. read more
