I pass through Monticello a few times a year and Monticello Bagel has turned into my little road trip ritual. I pull off, stretch my legs, and you can smell the toasters working the second you open the door. Last time it was a rainy morning and the whole place had that warm bakery air. I ordered an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese and a coffee. The bagel came out still warm in a brown paper bag. Good crust, proper chew, not bready. Seeds actually stick instead of shedding all over the car. Small thing, but it matters. The line can look long from the door, but it moves. I was back in my car in maybe ten minutes. Parking is straightforward. If I am trying to make time, the drive through is there and does what it should. The staff is focused and quick. Not chatty in a forced way. Just normal, which I appreciate before caffeine. This is not a fancy place and it does not try to be. No rainbow bagels, no dessert disguised as breakfast. It is a simple bagel shop that knows its lane. Price felt fair. Coffee was hot and not burnt. Cream cheese ratio was right. I am picky about that. Do I wish the menu had a little more going on. Yeah. A couple extra spreads, maybe a rotating special. If you want wild flavors, this is not that stop. But the classics are done properly, and that is why I keep coming back. Dare I say it; this place is superior for the area (albeit just about the only place for an hour of its kind lol) They do an okay job at making a bagel and an even more okay job at making a breakfast sandwich on said bagel like item, but their 452 employees couldn't really get out a small line of orders as quick as a turtle could but that's not really what we're going for up here anyway I suppose. My real gripe is that they don't know what the word "toasted" means. Unless they are quite literally toasted themselves in the other sense of the word; I'd be pretty baked in this town too; what else is there to do besides sell mundane things and live... mundanely. The Monticello bagel bakery has been a staple in town for decades. The bagels are good (not the boiled bagels I grew up with) and they make great sandwiches on those bagels. Most of the time there is a line inside but they do their best to move things along. Sometimes it seems weird because one person should be taking orders and the other staff should prepare them but that is not the way they roll. Who ever takes your order makes your order. Not the most efficient system because if you just want a dozen bagels you need to wait till one of the staff are free. That said, they do have a drive through that you have to navigate to get to if you are not familiar. If you travel with your dog the dogs gets offered Bacon through the drive through. They make home made cream cheeses and some nice baked goodies along with the usual lox and other appetizers. I like this establishment and it's pretty predictable as per the quality of the goods. A very friendly staff will keep you well fed and get your order through. Before COVID they had seating inside but not anymore. They have some outdoor seating but that's not good in the wintertime. I give them a solid 4 stars. They also have milk, juice and eggs if you're running short (pricey). The bagels are $1.50 bit if you get two bagels with cc and bacon with two drinks you're paying $15 or more depending. It is still convenient and they don't skimp on the sandwiches. I recommend this ole time establishment and the good folks that keep it going. Not many of these places left in town from back in the day. Enjoy!! read more

Come here for top-notch, old-school, traditional bagels that are always fresh and well-made sandwiches. Just a couple of caveats. First, they close at 3 PM (despite some online sources that say 4). And try to get there early, as they may run out of some types. The only thing I do not like here is their "authentic" pastrami, which is not. It's Boar's Head, sliced thin, and so salty, it made me tear up, and not in a good way. This is a no. Instead, go for the traditional lox and bagel. Thick cuts of lox, generous cream cheese, at the perfect temperature. All the bagel flavors are great. I like the traditional ones. My daughter, a spice fiend, loves the jalapeño. Service is fast and friendly but brusque and no-nonsense (in a New York kind of way). If you use the drive-through, be sharp. The speaker is not good and they are very fast and do not read your order back to you. Pay cash and you get a discount. read more

Their French Toast bagel rivals famous Utopia Bagels in Queens! WOW! They also have a Caraway bagel that catches my eye every time cause I'd never seen that flavor before and wonder what it could possibly taste like. The line is really haphazard when you walk in, so some tape or foot markers on the ground wouldn't kill anyone. Otherwise, all you need to know is they're convenient, fairly-priced, and stock a quality French Toast bagel. Perfection for me! read more

This place cries there's not enough business. Made up a phony bagel festival. Lines are way too long. But they cannot ever get an order or a bagel right. It's so crowded. Coughing on bagels is bad enough. The girls take your order WRITTEN on a paper pad & still get it wrong! Once I orders two sandwiches to go before a trip driving to NYC. When I was miles away in the car one bagel was a tiny mini. For a child at full size price. The next try I ordered a whole wheat with cream cheese and a sesame bagel with cream cheese. And a dry egg bagel. When I got home (very far away) there were two sesames no whole wheat and the egg bagel was like a challah bread. Three strikes and they're out. read more

Have been a fan for many years but this was my last visit. Paid $28 (cash price - would have been $29 paying by credit card) for two bagel sandwiches, one bagel with cream cheese, and two juices. The bagel sandwiches were so anemic it would have been comical if I hadn't just wasted almost $30 and been left feeling like I'd had nothing to eat. The bagel sandwiches allegedly had bacon, egg, cheddar cheese, and scallion cream cheese, but you could have fooled me. First off, they were so under filled that I thought she just gave me bagels with nothing on them at all. Closed and super thin, you could not see anything at all just looking at them. It looked like bagels, not bagel sandwiches. They truly just looked like dry bagels and nothing else. When I lifted the top, I could see that there was a super thin egg, a half slice of bacon, and so little scallion cream cheese or cheddar cheese that it really seems like they forgot to put any on at all and maybe got a little on there by accident because it was on the knife when they cut it. I cannot stress how much I am not exaggerating. There literally was so little on there that not only could I not taste either cheddar cheese or scallion cream cheese whatsoever - I couldn't even see any. Sandwiches with bacon, egg, cheddar cheese, and scallion cream cheese should not be so dry you almost choke, but they were. And one half of one piece of bacon and one tiny egg are a joke. These bagel sandwiches were $7 each and were literally gone in two bites. There wasn't ANYTHING to them at all! I have never felt so ripped off in my life. Until I realized I was also charged $9.50 for two tiny juices. Not homemade juice - two little processed juice cartons. The bagel with cream cheese wasn't much better. While you could actually see the thin later of cream cheese on that one, it was truly only enough cream cheese for half of the bagel. To make it edible we had to take the top of the bagel off and just eat the bottom. Wow. A born New Yorker, it is safe to say I have been eating bagels for nearly all 50 years of my life, and this was the WORST bagel experience I have ever had anywhere. And I've been coming here for years so I know how good they used to be. Sometimes I could barely finish my bagel sandwich. Today I ate it in two bites and was still starving. It was so bad that if I'd been eating there in person and hadn't gotten it to go I would have taken them straight back to the counter to be remade correctly. Thinner, more light and flaky than your average rock star bagel. The schmear was good. The price was decent. Overall good bagel presentation and taste. Ambiance was basic. Service was sub-par. For posterity and balanced reasoning. May try to return tomorrow to buy dozen bagels to share with family back in Los Angeles. Buy them in the morning, get them on the plane by afternoon, and sandwiches by dinner? Maybe. Would I write home about this place? Probably not. The lox bagel I had in Manhattan earlier this week was life changing. It was a $19 bagel, but it was so very worth it. Ridiculous yes, and so good. May have felt differently if the service didn't give me bad superiority vibes. Thank god for the one girl who realized i had been standing there awhile as i was considering walking out. -1: Rude. There were probably like seven or eight people on staff behind the counter during my twenty minute visit. Only one very sweet girl made eye contact with me after standing in line for what felt like forever. Ignored by the front of house cashiers and order takers. Hint: Instead of pointing the finger at your co-worker who is not present with your back turned to customers -- Have some awareness. Stop gossiping and greet customers. Your conversation is not the priority. That was enough wait and get ignored for me. I'm very patient. However, wont wait and then pay for holier than thou blonde teenage girls to quit stop gossiping and take my food order. Usually like my bagel without the extra long wait time, and side of yenta. I am easygoing, however zero warmth, zero acknowledgement, avoidant eye contact and no greeting whatsoever. Not even "good morning" or "We'll be right with you." Hmmmmn. I have better things to do than wait around for bagels. That really deserves a second star off. They don't use Uber eats or any delivery service here. It was good enough, but have low expectations. And do not have other things to-do or other plans as the customer is not the priority. read more

I have been spending summers in the Catskills for over a quarter century and ever since I heard about Monticello Bagel Bakery, I was skeptical, despite people always telling me it's actually pretty good. Pretty good indeed! I stopped by on a Sunday morning to pick up bagels for brunch and I was so impressed with the selection: plain, salt, caraway, pumpernickel, Asiago, cheddar, blueberry, cranberry, French toast, cinnamon raisin, poppy, sesame, mini bagels, and flagels! Dayyyyyyum! I had a cheddar bagel with lox, veggie cream cheese, and tomato. My friend had a cinnamon raisin bagel with walnut raisin cream cheese. The bagels, compared to NYC ones, are smaller (which means they're normal sized in reality since NYC ones are massive), less crunchy on the outside and have a more doughy texture, but they are REALLY good. I'm a bagel connoisseur, trust me. Also, if I got my sandwich in the city it would've cost $10.95 minimum. Here, for BOTH bagels...$12 total. Yes! read more

Our stop in Monticello was a walk down Memory Lane. While most every shop I remember from the 60's is long gone ... the bagel store (so I read) is owned by the same family that started it years ago. I don't eat salt bagels anymore. Who needs all that sodium?! But salt was my favorite from this bagel shop years ago, so that's what I ordered. And son-of-a-gun, it tasted as good as I remembered: light, slightly puffy. Better than the bagels I was buying in Queens. Sunday afternoon the shop was bustling with patrons, including a fourth generation Monticel-ian who gave me an update on all the changes in town. read more

These guys make great bagels. and they have a drive thru no less! Personally I have bagels with butter or breakfast sandwich ones, and they are all terrific here. They sell some other things too, lunch sandwiches, some jams and jellies, but Ive never tried any of those. The help here is also very friendly. read more

Idk who is running this place now but for about a year now the service has been trash. The food doesn't taste the same and the lack of attention to customer details has been lacking. Lines are always long (even when there's about 7-8 employees working at a time) and there ordering services is off even though they offer pickup through drive thru but you can't order any hot items from there drive-thru. Management really needs reevaluate and organize this operation better. read more

I used to love this place. It's definitely dropped down two stars recently. Exterior could use a facelift they make enough money to put towards some improvements. The prices went up. I ordered 2 dozen bagels, and the two bagels with cream cheese to eat in, cost almost as much as a half dozen. Its ambiance inside is bleak and very dark and dated, there is no place to sit other than the 5 stools against the storefront window looking over the dreary Broadway and the cracked out streetwalkers. The employees should be wearing gloves and a shower would improve their overall appearance. The employees also pay you know mind and carry on conversations between each other as you are waiting to order. I was ready to pay and the girl told me the total as I paid with a credit card my total increased $2 more without warning...didn't notice until I left. Did she add her own tip for having to use the toaster? I'll never know. Upon eating the toasted bagel with c/c it hardly had any c/c barely a smear. I think if you are charging $3.50 I want to have some decent cream cheese. The bagel didn't have the same quality as I remember. Have they changed their recipe/bakers? This has been my family's go-to in the area for basically my whole life, and the quality remains excellent. I have memories as a kid pulling up to the drive-thru on the way to school and ordering through the giant bagel speaker.
