A lovely meal and a great experience. Yelp has been waiting a full year for me to finish this review, so here I go. We had an amazing multi-course vegan lunch and Montiel. With so many great places to eat, fitting this place in midday really helped us maximize the culinary tour de force that was our trip to Barcelona. Our waiter, Tomaso, was a delight. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and knew exactly when to come to our table and when to give us space. At the end of the meal we had a lovely conversation and he told us why Barcelona is such an international city and how easy it was to be a transplant from Italy. Almost as good as our meal was the environment. There was one other person dining there, someone my partner aptly described as an "international man of mystery." He was gregarious and clearly living his best life. Every dish, he would ask Tomaso to pick out a wine and each time he would say, "Money is no object!" or that the price did not matter. He loved everything Tomaso brought and it did not appear at thought Tomaso took advantage of this man's willingness to spend top dollar, even though the man asked it his name was, "To-mah-to." This place lives up to everything you hear about Barcelona being gastronomic paradise with more Michelin stars per capita than just about anywhere. read more

No question this was the best meal we had in Barcelona and rivaled our top meals in Paris from our last trip. I'm not sure if it the tasting menu is the same price but when we went it was such a value at 65 euro/pp. The dishes felt like they would never end and we were so stuffed but we kept wanting more. The menu changes seasonal but two standouts were the Duck Foie Gras Ravioli (still missing Foie in California, please come back). The other being one of the desserts that was Truffle Chocolate with a hint of real truffle taste. You have to try it, just amazing. I visited Montiel after researching online and seeing its rank and positive reviews on TripAdvisor. Despite my high expectations, it managed to exceed it. When we visited, there was a football (soccer, for US and Canada) game going on so it was not very busy. But this did not affect the quality of food and service we received. The waiters were very friendly, attentive and knowledgeable about the menu they offer. The food was impeccable - especially the suckling pig! Very crispy skin and the meat is tender, juicy and flavorful. We also ordered duck and ravioli, both of which were also superb. I am typically a picky foodie but I have nothing to complain about with this restaurant. This is one of those places where the food is not only exceptional, but the incredible service and staff just put the entire dining experience over the top! But when I say 5-star incredible service, I'm not talking about the well-rehearsed and precision makings of a place like Per Se or Alinea. I'm talking about the kind of place where the front of house takes the time to sit down at your table and passionately explain the nuances of jamon to a table of foreigners; where the waiter effuses with joy about what is happening in the kitchen serves every dish with pure excitement; and just the overall warmth and welcoming that wiped away any sense of pretense that one might expect with seemingly simple, but surprisingly complex flavours served at your fingertips. But let's not forget about the food. Unfortunately (for you), our meal was a special "New Year's" menu that they threw together that day based on what was fresh, and actually morphed throughout the evening based on the chef's whims and inspirations (now how great is THAT?). But hopefully some of the dishes they served that night will make a reappearance on future nights, because they were just outstanding. Even with the simplest plate of olives and jamon to start, every morsel was of exquisite freshness and overwhelming with depth and flavour. A definite favourite of ours was the wild salmon tartare, dressed with a seafood caramel and salmon roe. The acid and lusciousness of the salmon played so well off each other amidst the smoky notes of toasted pine nuts and sesame seeds, and we felt spoiled to have eaten so well so early on. Foie lovers need not be disappointed, as we had foie that was marinated in bourbon and prepared sous vide, and then served alongside a marvelous quince jelly and candied pistachios; then another piece seared brilliantly alongside a piece of filet mignon and showered in black truffle shavings. But does the truffle madness end there? Certainly not. A deceptively simple dish of wild mushrooms, egg, and black truffle just oozed decadence and could not be any more delicious, with each component shining as it should. The chocolate desserts may not have been as visually arresting as you might come to expect at places of similar calibre, but the flavours and textures of chocolate mousse, iced raspberries, and chocolate foam were playful and definitely satisfying. Amidst all of this great food and brilliant service, I think it is also worth giving them a plug and highlighting the fact that the folks at Montiel pull off what they do by committing themselves to local produce, including a commitment to sourcing 80% of their wines from Catalan, and have been awarded recognition as a "Slow Food Movement" restaurant. Not that they needed these extra kudos to convince anyone to come eat there, but I figure they worked hard for these accolades, so someone should brag about them! read more

Wow, I'm not sure where to start. I'm not a huge fish person but the Ceviche was the best I've ever had and I would eat it 3 times a day if it was possible. The atmosphere, service and food quality were all 5 stars. We also had Iberico Ham which is carved at the front store of the restaurant, it was full of flavor and minimal salt; amazing! BEST MEAL EVER! (this review is solely based on a New Years Day tasting menu experience--see menu below) Seasonal snacks-- interesting texture, but very tasty. Greater amberjack ceviche--to. die. for. wasn't/still not sure what "tiger milk" is but the ice cream complimented the ceviche perfectly. Pigeon confited-- this was probably the "worst" thing on the menu, but because I mentally couldn't eat the second half of the pigeon. First bite was REALLY good, then I got psyched out about eating pigeon (there are seriously so many fat pigeons in Barcelona that we had pointed out earlier in the day) Green peas--the combination of peas and squid was unique and mouthwatering. I'm not sure if the peas were soaking in some sort of fat/grease beforehand, but they were amazing. Rice with lobster-- I don't remember this dish very much, but I also don't remember complaining about it, so it must have been good :) Duck's and pear ravioli-- THIS IS THE GREATEST THING EVERY CREATED ON THE PLANET. I still dream of this dish, it is just fatty and mouthwatering and all the feels you could ever have in one bite. Suckling pig-- reminded me of carnitas, but a little juicier. great none the less. Citrus diversity-- yummy palette cleansers at the end of the meal The origins of truffle-- one word, CHOCOLATE. The petite four-- yummy little chocolate (white and milk) bites to end your perfect meal **WINE PAIRING WITH MEAL (see menu)-- all the wines were perfectly paired with their dish, and the pours were quite generous. If I could give this place more stars I would. The service was incredible. We were lost and couldn't find the restaurant and when I called, they came and found us and walked us over. When we arrived, it was quiet and the food was brought out quickly. We had the olives and bread/olive oil tasting which was delicious and the sparkling wine that was recommended to us was absolutely delicious. And then the main course was brought out and there aren't words available to describe how yummy it was. My mom had the tenderloin and I had the ravioli. Both I definitely recommend having. We had the menjar blanc which was also yummy. Overall, a great experience and definitely one we're considering having again. read more

Outstanding Experience! We ordered the Gastronomic Menu which was superb! All the food was interesting, creative and absolutely delicious. Gabriel was our waiter, a very sweet, charming and professional young man, who explained each dish and yet left some to our senses to figure out. Each dish was not only for taste, but was for smell, touch (texture) and really had your mind inquisitive. The courses build on each other, a really fantastic, unique experience. Do make a stop here! We did not do the wine pairing but ordered Shays white wine, at the recommendation of the manager. It went well with everything except the last dessert. Total dishes that came out was 10. I also would like to thank the manager as we had made a reservation but appears it never went through and maybe I did not finalize the process. I showed him the screen shot I had of the pre-booking (which I thought was the booking) from a week earlier and he worked with us. Just make sure call/email ahead to confirm reservation. Ridiculously good! On a three-stop gastronomic journey through Paris, Barcelona, and Florence, this was my 2nd favorite meal--and a close 2nd, at that. If you're going to Barcelona and love food, get a reservation as soon as you can! It's also not the easiest restaurant to find, so give yourself plenty of time to get there. I don't know how often the menu changes, but we enjoyed the Gastronomic Menu for 65 Euros, with a wine pairing at 30 Euros. So much good food and drink! Honestly, everything was absurdly good, with wonderful ingredients and outstanding preparation. A few standouts were the "Ox of Wagyu from Burgos," the "Foie Micuit Salad," and the "Origin of the Truffle." The Origin of the Truffle was mind boggling! The chef used actual truffles in the dessert! The flavor combination was amazing. The atmosphere in the restaurant was great, with interesting looking art on the walls, but a simple table set up so there was no pretension. The servers were kind, helpful, and funny! We were one of the last tables left in the place, and our server was incredibly chatty (in a good way, not that he wouldn't leave us alone!) about the food, the wine, the city, etc. The chef even came out and signed a menu for me =) If you've read my reviews, you know that I've been lucky enough to go to some amazing restaurants in my life. Not food - An experience! One of the best experiences I have had in 35 years! I visited Montiel in 2012 and waited 3 years to come back as it was so amazing. Came during the slow season at the beginning of March this year (Got on one of the last flights back to the USA!). The service was wonderful, and we opted for some a la carte dishes. Heaven. Montiel is what I imagine the cuisine in heaven is like. If you have a few hours to enjoy, I highly recommend the tasting menu and accompanying wines. My boyfriend and I came on a Wednesday evening for a 9pm reservation. Apparently, we had some difficulties on the website, so the reservation didn't go through - however, there was an available table, so we were seated right away. Don't make our mistake and be sure to complete your reservation! The restaurant itself is a cozy two-floors, and it is intimate and charming. It's perfect for a date or enjoying with close friends and family. The ambience is simply darling. They take their time with preparing the food so plan accordingly. Each bite is made with fresh ingredients and love, so your meal will likely take 2-3 hours. I am so grateful to have had a wonderful, friendly staff guide us on a delicious culinary adventure. I will definitely return during my next trip to Barcelona! read more

Top 5 meals I've ever had, bar none. Montiel is better than Michelin starred restaurants I've been to, for a 1/3rd of the cost. The neighborhood, facade, and even inside of the restaurant are all very unassuming - but make no mistake about it, you are going to be blown away by their food. A few course highlights: - The first course was a strawberry gazpacho w/ a cucumber sorbet, which was a punch in the mouth of flavor and freshness. - Somewhere in the middle of the meal was a giant Spanish prawn w/ "rice from the sea", that was wrapped in Iberico and topped w/ saffron mayo. This was probably the best rice I've ever eaten; perfectly al dente and salty w/o tasting like fish, but still tasting like the sea. - The main course was the suckling pig w/ cauliflower cream and green apple, which was amazing. This dish was simple, but expertly executed. The meat was perfectly tender, yet the skin was the crispiest I've ever experienced. - The course before the piggy was simply the best thing I've ever eaten; its legitimately my last meal on death row, or what I would bring to a deserted island. That dish was a duck and pear ravioli in some kind of a chocolate/red wine/rosemary sauce w/ fa piece of seared foie gras on top. I've since tried to recreate this dish myself, and cant even come close to justice. This dish was simply divine; I literally think it changed my life. When I think back on it, the hair on my arms and the back of my neck stand at attention. Another really neat aspect about Montiel was the wine pairings. They take their sourcing of ingredients and their wines quite seriously, so everything was very local to the area. Therefore, all of the wines were entirely new to my palate and completely unique. Our waiter took the care to explain every pairing to us, which he coupled with a great personality. We felt quite welcome. We had the 8 course dinner for 68 Euros. Excellent flavor and service. Course 1: Thick Almond milk with fig purée. Heavenly. Course 2: Ceviche topped with finely chopped tomato and onions, with awesome spicy sorbet (almost like onion chutney). This had an amazing refreshing flavor. Course 3: Eggs cooked easy with turnip purée and mushrooms from their farm. Came with bread. Loved the mushrooms and turnip purée. Course 4: Very fresh green peas with well prepared baby squids and iberico ham. Course 5: Iberico ham slices (very thin) on top of local rice (flavored like in paella) with squid. Got sea bass for the other dish with food restriction. Course 6: Yummy and crunchy skinned suckling pig with cauliflower purée and side of finely chopped apple and fennel. Other dish was seabass topped with pickle of local veggies with some parsnip purée. Course 7 (dessert / palette-cleanser): Passion fruit foam, mandarin sorbet, lime meringue with lime sauce. This is one of our favorite dining experiences from our trip to Barcelona. We enjoy farm to table and this place fits the bill as 80%of the menu is locally sourced. The service is top notch and Vito was extremely knowledgeable about the menu. Other staff were extremely helpful as well. The amuse bouchée was a amazingly fresh watermelon gazpacho with apple purée. The starters, a Catalan sourced cheese board and local oysters were outstanding. Our entrees a lamb shoulder with perfectly seared skin with cauliflower purée and sea bass that flaked apart perfectly in your mouth with a parsnip purée were outstanding. We have been in Barcelona for nearly two months now and have eaten in many restaurants. Montiel is the best overall experience we have had: food, ambience, and service were all first class. Montiel is tucked away in a quiet street on the square behind the Museu Picasso. Very small, intimate and tastefully decorated. We chose the 7 course tasting menu with the wine pairings. I'm usually not a big fan of wine pairings but, in this case, it was fabulous. The sommelier was knowledgeable and very informative and the wines, mainly Catalan, were very interesting. All of the 7 courses were wonderful. I particularly liked the favorful red mullet and the wine paired with it (that I can't recall). There was also an interesting beet dish as well as tuna tartare. Montiel is not cheap but, for a special dinner, it is the place to go. read more

Still can't get used to the fact that the Spanish start dinner around 9pm at the earliest. I heard the earliest Restaurante Montiel takes reservations is at 8:30pm! I've seen families with small children having dinner at midnight!!! What's going on here? Anyhoo, the food here is exceptional and the service is top notch. They were very helpful in explaining everything in detail, and all the courses came out together at the same time in a timely manner. The food - amazing. Very modern take on Spanish food. We had a prix fixe four course menu for 55 Euros which seems very reasonably priced. If you're into hip modern food, try this restaurant. i came here about 6 months ago, so my memory of this place is bit scattered. The bits i remember are that this place is awesome. we managed to make reservation for 5 of us girls, but we got lost trying to find our way into the little alleys. We were about 30-45mins late and they had given away our table. However, they were still extremely accommodating and made space for us at the upstairs seating. The staff was great and gave us great recommendations of the food. Even though we're obviously tourist, they were not snotty at all. Very friend and helpful staff. We booked this restaurant for our second night in Barcelona. This has to be one of my favorite restaurant. Similar to many of other restaurants, they were small but this one actually had a second floor. We had waited all day around the area and were getting tired. We didn't want to go back to our hotel only to take the metro all the way back so we lingered in the area. We even got seated early too. Even though we were a bit tired from the long day, we loved our nearly 3 hours here. I tend to eat everything fast but I savored every piece that came my way. First Course: Iberian ham with tomato toast Second Course: Oyster Third Course: Melon soup with extra virgin olive oil ice cream Fourth Course: Prawn Tartare with guacamole and lime's air Fifth Course: Albacore on thin toasted bread with romesco and capers with edible flowers 6th Course: Lobster's Rice 7th Course: Ceviche (complementary dish) 8th Course: Duck and pears raviolis with foie poele and wild mushroom in Oporto's sauce 9th Course: Suckling pork with pumpkin puree (was not on the menu but we were lucky they had it for an upcoming party) 10th Course: Alcohol free beer (palate cleanser) 11th Course: Peaches, yogurt, and celery ice cream 12th Course: Figs, Baileys, Tonka Bean 13th Course: Complementary Truffles We also got the wine pairing that came with this. We had a wonderful experience at Montiel. The waitstaff was friendly and very attentive without being overbearing. Our head waiter recommended a great bottle of Albariño to pair with the meal, which we really appreciated. The food was phenomenal -- our favorite courses were the ceviche (fresh and delicious) and the suckling pig (this takes the recent crispy chicken skin fad that has taken America by storm to the next level). Although not integral to the meal, we also really liked the art hanging throughout the upstairs space. We would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a high-end dining experience in Barcelona (at a fraction of what it would cost to get the same experience in the US). read more

One of the just amazing meals I've ever had. Marcos is amazing. He knows everything about wine and is so kind. Each dish was perfectly balanced. All the food is organic, farm to table and locally sourced, some from their own garden. The service was fantastic with Gabriel has our waiter. He made sure to describe each course and wine pairing down to where the ingredients were from and how the wine was barreled. Everything was an explosion of flavor. For this menu, you have the option of Suckling Pig or Wagyu - Mainly reviewers rave about the Suckling Pig, but my husband and I ordered both and found the Wagyu to be of higher quality and an overall better dish. Prepare to spend 3-4 hours enjoying your meal, but let me say it was completely worth it. The gastronomic tasting menu introduced me to flavors and textures I've never experienced with food. Highly recommend going with the wine pairing. Gabbi, the Sommelier, introduced each bottle with a passionate story and love for the process and flavor in each wine. Each wine was a perfect compliment to the course. Highlights: -Prawn Tar Tar wrapped in Avocado -Quail Salad accompanied by Olive Oil Sorbet, Oranges, and Mushrooms. Incredible pairing. - Seared Red Tuna with Iceberg Luttuce Sorbet. Such and interesting pair, and the tuna was perfect and fresh. -White fish with mint and lime sorbet. -Duck and Pear Ravioli in a Foie sauce. One of THE dishes of my life. I could have ordered 20 of these. Or made a trip from out of town just to have this again -The only disappointing part was the wagyu beef. It had an amazing flavor, but the cut of meat had a lot of chewy parts that I couldn't eat. The accompanying potato and veal mix was incredible though. In coming here I thought this would be one of our best meals in Spain to round out trip. It even came highly recommended by one of our friends. Long story short we came here the last night of our trip and the restaurant just didn't meet expectation. We were seated at a table closest to the kitchen. There was so much noise coming out of the kitchen it was hard to ignore (there is no door only a curtain that was open). For the meal: the first course was fine (sweet potato chips)- not exactly something I come to a fine dining place for. The next 2 courses were good and looking back probably the best of the meal. There was a scallop sashimi salad and a sun choke soup. Now for the bad - the sea bass that was on the menu was substituted with cod. over the course of a week in Spain I ate a lot of cod and it was good, so I was looking forward to something different. Well - so we get cod again, no big deal so long as its well prepared. Unfortunately - it was very fishy smelling and just off putting such that all four at the table couldn't actually eat this dish. The thing that made it even more disappointing was if you're a restaurant that prides itself in quality food - if an entire table doesn't eat a dish you serve - you should at least ask why. But the waiter just took away the plates. The next course was beef. no one specified how it should be prepared. My husband just told him to serve it how the chef thinks its best served. Well 2 of the 4 steaks that showed up were well done and so chewy we couldn't eat it. My sister and I were so tempted to send it back but just didn't have the nerve to do it.
