The breakfast food is magical... overall they are good. I used to love this one salad but I think they may have changed the chef and things just aren't the same. The meat became kind of thick. Good local diner with a liquor license but, they decided to use a no name ketchup instead of National brands such as Hunts or Heinz to save some money. This review is on behalf of my parents that went and were treated with utter disrespect. They enter the diner and the waitress directs them to the inside area of the diner, until the tall middle aged gentlemen, presumably the manager signals the waitress to put them towards the benches in the end. They follow the waitress and have a seat. Another couple walks in and the manager himself directs them towards the inside area where my parents were initially supposed to sit. My parents then got up and left. Not sure if this was because they were of ethnic background or they didn't meet the standards of an average diner. My wife and I had breakfast here during a recent trip to NJ. The service was good, my wife enjoyed her breakfast. Mine was not as good. I ordered plain pancakes and a side of sausage. This is the cleanest diner I've ever been in! The windows between our booth and the front area where the register is were so clean that one of our party didn't know there was glass there until he noticed the etching ehich was higher than eye level! The food was very good--I had the portabella and chicken sandwich. The bread pudding was warm as requested and it was very, very good. The waitress was attentive but not intrusive and very nice to my grandson. We did have a little mishap with the stuffed animal grabber game/machine in the lobby but the staff was amazing in resolving the problem. Many thanks to the sweet woman at the regster who gave me back the $2.00 we lost in the machine/ I ended up returning that money because another very thoughtful server took the time to test the machine which worked without a problem for her. She got a little stuffed allegator out of it and brought it to my grandson who had been very upset about the whole "nothing happened" problem. So, for the food, the cleanliness and the very, VERY nice people who work there, I give the Montville Diner FIVE stars! read more

Just came from eating dinner with my family here. We were sort of a regular customer over the last year we all had one of the worst meals we ever had at a dinner anywhere. Salmon not cooked enough sent back only to have it microwaved and brought back 1 minute later. Just bad. A chicken panini that bread was not pressed or cooked enough, never had a panini where the bread was fluffy. Even the salads tasted funky. About the only redeeming thing was some french fries that came with a burger that was not really good either, but can you really give more than 1 star for good french fries. When we showed the server how bad it was and asked to talk to the management they took $6 off the meal. Do not ever plan on going back. read more

Their food is mediocre at best but I go there w a family member and they seem to like it there. Anyway, today I witnessed something that truly bothered me and bothers me even more that I didn't speak up. Today around 1230 I was eating lunch (burnt bacon) and bad soup, when I family walked in and they had a service dog with them and the owner denied them entry. This diner is just plain bad. The service is horrible. The owner has that "give me your money and get the hell out" attitude about him and doesn't seem to have any patience when it comes to you requesting things like water, napkins, etc. The food is bad for diner food, which in itself, is not meant to be really good. I stopped coming here after high school and usually frequent the Empire Diner. Every once in a while I get lazy and order from here, and every single one of those times I am reminded why I boycotted the Montville Diner in the first place. My advice, drive up rt.46 west for another mile and go to Empire. read more

Don't order the Patty Melt! Worst dinner I have ever had. It cost $10.00 and it was a thin frozen patty with no taste at all. I have ordered the Patty Melt at many diners through the years and have always had a fresh big hamburger not a small thin frozen patty. Definitely not worth the money. Read some reviews before trying this diner, but we we hadn't eaten all day and decided to try it out despite seeing the words "Worst diner in Northern Jersey" on TripAdvisor. Well, we should have heeded that warning! I ordered the French Onion soup. The broth was so tasteless that even salt would have helped. It was nothing more than a flavorless broth with cooked onions and melted cheese. Melted cheese can usually make anything better, but not this time. My husband had a corn beef and pastrami omelette with a side salad. He said that the entire omelette tasted like hotdogs. Good pastrami and corn beef should not taste like cheap hotdogs, and I could visually see the side salad was nothing more than a pile of limp lettuce. Diners used to be a trademark of Jersey, and I grew up going to some of the best ones. What on earth is happening out there? I used to go to the Montville Diner regularly years ago. The food was quite acceptable then. But my husband and I went back one day last week, and we had the worst food ever! I had stuffed cabbage, and their was no liquid in the stuffing. It was just dried out cooked beef and rice, with no seasoning. It was absolutely awefull! My husband ordered a side of spinach and rice, and it smelled worse than dog food and tasted worse. I had to spit it out. Tasted like old canned spinach mixed with dried out rice. I stopped in tonight for a quick dinner with the family after a long drive home. It was 8:30 and mostly empty. The food was mediocre at best and the host made it worse with his comments when we were paying the bill. He asked me the obligatory "How was everything"? I responded "eh, not so good". You'd think at this point he'd ask why and at least apologize. Instead he said nothing and really didn't respond at all. So I volunteered the details of how my wife's egg white omelette was wet because the frozen spinach they use was not properly dried before being added, my chicken souvlaki sandwich was served on a slightly stale pita, my kids pasta with butter was awful (how hard is it to melt butter?), it wasn't butter but some imitation product or margarine or something, and all of the hash browns were undercooked and bland. The pizza cheesesteak was more like a steak-um with sauce and cheese on it. In fairness, my 10 year old ordered Oreo pancakes that were delicious. After this, the host only offered a "we were very busy tonight" but nothing more. I even offered him an excuse when I asked if there was a fill-in chef or something out of the norm going on with the kitchen. I'd eaten there before for work lunches and it was always fine. Needless to say, we will not be returning anytime soon. It's one thing for a place to have an off night as it happens to the best of us. But when 4 out of 5 dishes are just not that good and the host shows zero remorse or customer service, it's not worth venturing back. read more

One word to describe it, HORRIBLE, DO not waste your money. Went there last night for dinner, 9/12/14. Ordered crab cakes with Mac n cheese. Well what I got was potato pancake with a hint of chopped up sea legs in it. The Mac n cheese was Kraft box Mac n cheese. My husband ordered broiled scallops that could have been used for fish bait! Hard, rubbery and disgusting. Asked for cocktail sauce and received undiluted tomato soup! We approached the owner and asked why the Kraft Mac n cheese and he admitted that was what it was because they were catering to children and that's what the kids like. He did admit that they have had numerous complaints and MIGHT go back to real Mac n cheese. I reminded him still we were not kids and what kids order crab cakes, since they were potatoe pancakes.he just laughed. I told him to take a good look at us because we would NEVER be returning. My husband and I visited this diner for the first time and it will definitely be our last. It is overpriced for the quality of food you get. My husband ordered a ceasar wrap which he said was disgusting. It was basically a wrap filled with mostly lettuce and overloaded with dressing so much so that it leaked everywhere and the wrap fell apart. I ordered a chicken panini which was horrible. The waitress was very nice and told us to order something else. We figured you can't mess up a burger right? WRONG! They served us with the cheapest frozen thin patties in an oversized bun. They should be ashamed of themselves to serve this kind of cheap meat and charge the amount of money you wouldn't mind paying if you were served with a juicy fresh ground meat burger.
