I can't thank them enough! Lucky is 11 and has seen Dr. Kuhrt pretty consistently since his last vet retired. He has had amazing check ups, vaccines, and various routine maintenance done here, all with the highest level of care. All of these doctors are very realistic about results and upfront with pricing. They want to do as much as possible within reason to keep pets healthy and happy. I had my first nightmare encounter with an emergency vet where they sent my boy home in the same condition he arrived in with a huge bill. it was such a breath of fresh air taking him back here. Dr. Dennis is an okay vet but I definitely wouldn't recommend her. We had no problems the first dog I took to her but when that do passed away I adopted another dog. I made an appointment to get her shots and established. She is a 5 year old dog whose owner used her for breeding. Our first appointment went well. She got her shots and Dr. Dennis mentioned she was over weight. At this point , I had the dog for two weeks but I still got fat shamed and "educated " about her weight. I asked Dr. Dennis how much I should be feeding her and she said 20% less than I was. I had the dog for TWO weeks at that point. She knew this. How do I know how much her previous owner fed her? Next visit she got her second round of shots and again her weight is brought up and I am spoken to by her in a condescending manner and fat shamed about her weight. Fast forward, I have the dog spayed at a clinic because Monument wants 700.00 dollars for a spay. She developed bloody diarrhea 5 days after the spay. I called Monument and to their credit they got her right in. Dr. Dennis diagnosed her with stress colitis which at this point I don't believe was right. I believe it was the beginning of an infection from the spay. Then she starts in about her weight again. It doesn't help that Dr. Dennis always has a Student with her so she feels she needs to put on a show for them. She looked me straight in the face and said " Did they talk to you about her weight" meaning the clinic where I had her spayed. I was pretty annoyed at this point because If I take my dog to you for bloody diarrhea, I don't want to be lectured about her weight AGAIN! I answered NO, you're the only one whose concerned about her weight! but apparently she didn't get the hint because she keeps on about her weight! For reference, she is a small Golden Retriever and weighs 56 pounds. She isn't exactly obese but I don't dispute that she could lose a few pounds. I was pretty upset and finally said " I'm not concerned about her weight right now, I am concerned about her bloody diarrhea! At this point, Dr. Dennis takes two fingers , hits me on my knee pretty dang firmly and says something but I am not even sure what that was because I was absolutely FURIOUS at this point. First of all, don't lecture , don't scold me , don't make me and my dog a "teaching moment" for your student and above all DON"T TOUCH ME! Secondly, when I bring my dog in sick, the last thing I want to talk about is her weight. JUST STOP! And last , My dog ended up having an infection called Stump Pyrometra. It is a surgery complication from her spay. I believe the initial diarrhea was the first symptom of that. I had to find another vet because I sure wasn't EVER going back to Dr. Dennis. Even though I had made the effort to get her established at Monument, this had me scrambling for another vet last minute. I absolutely would never go back and I DON"T recommend them to anyone I know. Of course, If your dog is a perfect weight or you don't mind being fat shamed or used as an example for vet students perhaps give it a try. There are a lot of more reasonably priced vets out there though. read more

This is the absolute best vet clinic I have ever seen. I'm from Oregon and am visiting Tucson and my Six year old puppy came down with valley fever. All the staff was compassionate and courteous. I can't say enough about how wonderful Dr. Dennis was. she treated Abbey like she was her puppy. For a vet hospital the prices were comparable to a regular vet's office. Did you know this horrible vet clinic is funded by the university to train students? That's right, which means your pet is being the practice, learn while you earn victim. Supervised by who??? This unskilled practice unfortunately is what cause our pets death from Monument east vet clinic. Unskilled, Uneducated, unprofessional care, and looking just to make a fast dollar instead of referring us to a real hospital that could render quality care around the clock. This place sent us home with a case of food and pills and told us to contact Southern Arizona vet hospital if there is a problem. These two places work together and if you read their reviews, not good pet care at all. Monument east you should be ashamed to call yourself a hospital, your nothing but a pet grooming salon, and you use unexperienced and in training students to make your mistakes for you. Took our cat in to be euthanized and the vet told us that our cat would not suffer or feel any pain during the process. Nothing could be further from the truth. Our cat agonized and whimpered until silence surrounded her lifeless body. To add insult to injury, the vet and his staff mailed a sympathy card to us with a different family's cat's name on it! I read through the reviews. First let me level set. I had a senior dog exhibit a new behavior I had never seen in the 20+ huskies I have cared for. I love this dog. I was in full panic mode when I then found two lumps. Stress is an understatement. Monument responded to my email (I sent at midnight) the following morning at 7:30am aka the moment they opened thats monumental. They scheduled me quickly. I (not the dog) have stress seizures caused by PNES so can't drive in a situation like this so, grabbed an Lyft and away we go. My PNES exhibits through extremely high-level-fact processing to slow all creative processing. That way I don't fall and bash my head. I begin to display blunt if not humors behavior. I hyper focus on humans facial expressions because creative processing is gone and I won't pick up on common social niceties. I dont know what anyones intent was while I was at Monument all I know is they behaved like medical professionals. That's what I wanted. Were they kind, probably, but I wasn't there for kindness. I wanted efficient not affectionate. They are medical professionals, they were not there to treat me, they treated my dog perfectly. He is going to be ok but even if he wasn't, I would not have wanted them to behave or act any different. Peace of mind is priceless and it comes at a price, especially in an emergency. read more

Probably the most complete care that any of my animals have ever been given. We arrived in Tucson with a sick older cat and left Tucson three months late with a sick older cat. Durring that time we visited Monument East about six times and had phone contact 3/4 times. Dr. Dennis is a cautious, knowledgeable and caring animal person. Our cat's illness was approached with care and effort to not exaserbate an already difficult situation. Various options were explored with us and she guided and clarified our treatment options with care. Our cat had relief from her repeated vomiting for periods of time and regained her interest in eating. She is home now, still sick and still being cared for by Dr. Dennis. I believe that we are very fortunate to have had Dr. Dennis on our cat's team. Office staff was professional. worked to get my cat in to the office in an expidited manner. read more

Made an emergency appointment here because I thought me cat was dying. She's very old, somewhere between 19 and 21. The technicians were all wonderful, but the Vet was the rudest and most inconsiderate person I have ever met. She dead looked me in the eye and said "you do love your cat, right?" I was already in tears and thought that couldn't be a real question so I didn't answer. Then she asked again! "You DO love your cat right?". I found an older dog limping around my neighborhood and they were the only vet I was able to get ahold of, they did free curbside chip detection and I was able to get the dog reunited with his owner that very next hour. Monument East is not my regular vet, but I had an urgent situation. My maltipoo was completely lethargic and clearly not herself. I wasn't panicked because she was still eating, drinking, and pottying just fine, but after the second day with no improvement, I was getting more worried, so I called my regular vet for an appointment; they had nothing, not even a work-in, for almost two weeks. I started calling around to vets in my area to see if anyone could get her in. Not even the emergency vets had openings. After about 8 or 10 phone calls, one of the vets who did not have an opening recommended Monument East. I called and spoke to them, explaining the situation. They fitted me in the very same day, and Dr. Pavlovitz did an extensive workup and a battery of tests, checking with me at every step. I took her home with meds and a follow-up appointment the next day. She had a reaction to one of the meds, so I called and they talked with me over the phone and gave me guidance on what to do. This morning, she was just not right, and seemed as if she might be feverish, so I called for an appointment. They said I'd probably need to do a drop off but to get there as soon as possible. I arrived shortly before 8:30 and they ended up taking me right away, since the next appointment was not yet there. Again they provided good care and patiently answered all of my questions. My only quibble is that they are on the expensive side - the three visits cost nearly $950, which included various lab tests and x-rays, but the care (and caring) has been outstanding. read more

Incredibly kind and efficient staff. I called because my dog had maybe swallowed a nail and I was freaked out about it- I got lucky that they were able to schedule me within the hour. Upon arriving, the staff was following COVID precautions and came out to my car to get my dog/give me paperwork. I spoke to three different people- receptionist, vet tech, and vet? And they all introduced themselves and were very kind and informative about payments, concerns, etc. The entire trip took about 15 minutes. New to Tucson, needed a new vet for my pups and Monument East was recommended by a friend. And with many Tucson vets not even taking new clients because of staffing issues, it was great to get an appointment in less than a week. The staff were all great, especially Dr. Claire and the tech that helped with my lab. Dr. Claire took her time explaining things and discussing other potential issues which was great. Charges were reasonable and there was no upselling for services which I greatly appreciate. Not sure about the negative reviews here because I found Monument East to be a very good choice for the care of my 2 dogs. read more

John Hurtado is an incompetent and out of touch vet. He is so unaware of himself that he's thought my dog breathing out out of frustration was a growl. We also brought our dog in because she was having skin lesions and we couldn't figure out what they were from. Turns out she's just allergic to her food. Like we had originally told him instead they sent her home with a pharmaceutical of medications that did absolutely nothing and charged us over $400+ instead of giving us what we originally wanted- some type of limited ingredients food. I honestly feel at this point that every veterinarian just has to take advantage of your situation and charge you as much as they can before they figure out what the actual problem is. I really don't want to write a bad review. But I just can't, in good faith, not share my experiences with Monument East. I love my dog so much, and I know others love their pets as much as I love mine, and I don't want them to regret their choice in vet. The priorities at this office seem off. While I think the doctor is intelligent and that he cares about animals, I got the overall sense that money was the main interest. No matter what we brought our dog in for during the year of going to this vet, we were always presented with a long laundry list of add-on treatments to do. We're already the type of people that go so far as to do yearly bloodwork. But yet they always find more stuff that could be done. It's really not necessary to put a pet through so much, and it's unacceptable for them to suggest it just so they can make more cash. A dog doesn't need to be put under anesthesia every six months for teeth cleaning. That's excessive, but if you don't do it, you'll get a post card every other week in the mail, a phone call every week, and even e-mails to remind you to do it. They harass you. At one point, the vet noticed that our dog had cracked a tooth. We didn't want the tooth to become infected, so we decided to do the procedure to fix it. A few minutes after the doctor started the procedure, we got a phone call and were told that our dog had SEVEN MORE TEETH that needed to be fixed. Something that was going to cost a couple hundred dollars now exceeded a thousand dollars. Since we weren't able to see in the dog's mouth, we reluctantly agreed, after the doctor assured us that he couldn't help with the unexpected costs at all. Upon picking our dog up, the doctor presented us with photos of the teeth. Most of the additional teeth were merely chipped, and not badly. He filled them just because he could. The interesting part is that in the middle of our dog's series of photographs, which were shown to us on the screen of the camera so they were ordered as they were taken, there was a picture of the doctor doing push ups! HE WAS DOING PUSH UPS IN THE MIDDLE OF HAVING MY DOG UNDER ANESTHESIA AND CHARGING ME AN ARM AND A LEG FOR DENTAL WORK THAT ARGUABLY DIDN'T NEED TO BE DONE. This after he had told us that since it's so much more work, he couldn't help us with the cost. It couldn't have been that much more work if he had time to screw around in the middle of the procedure! What a joke! I was so livid, I decided right then and there that I would never return to this vet, and I never have. Did I mention that half of every office visit was the vet trying to sell us his music CD? Yeah, that's what he was most interested in. He even has a CD listening station set up in the waiting room. Seriously? I guess you might need something to do out there, since the doctor was always late. An hour and a half late for one appointment. The receptionists are often curt and grumpy. They don't talk to you very much. They don't seem to want to help. It was like pulling teeth to try to get a prescription for a heart worm medication. And then they wrote it wrong, so I had to go back, only to be greeted with negativity as if it were my fault it was incorrect. Overall, I would avoid Monument East. The focus should be more on the pets than it seems to have been during our experiences there. Go down the road, you'll find a better office not too far away. P.S. If your dog is a maniac chewer, like mine, don't give him/her those hard Nylabones. They will chip teeth. read more

I started going with my 2 dogs. Then with a foster. It was always $500.00 or more. What caused me to leave was when I brought Jackson in for a nail trim and found out he had been sedated and Dr.H had him on the table with a bloody mouth poking him all through his mouth! He then proceeds to tell me that they will need to remove at least 7 teeth. Total shock to say the least. When I ended up paying for the nail trim I was too upset to argue about the unauthorized things he did. I would never allowed it. I was told by a not so nice person that I would be contacted Monday with the amount for dental. I was not contacted for two weeks. Outrageous fee. Please note.. prior, I took my other dog every 6 months for descaling and yearly for dental. Way over $2,000. We took our foster for neutering because I wanted him treated well. HE knew it was not a good place, I should have gone with my gut. Again around $ 500.00. I took him back later because I wasn't sure he was urinating enough. $500.00 later. No problem, and nothing done! Prices way too high. I took Jackson to a Dr. I was referred to who was wonderful. Great friendly staff. Only ONE tooth needed pulled. I'm sorry I had to write a negative review, but I don't think Dr.'s should sell their country music in their office. Maybe too many people are leaving DR.H and he needed another way to make ends meet! read more

Thank you so much and so much gratification to Dr. Ashley Lawton for her help with my dog Teddy. He has had severe allergies since he was born. I adopted him from THE ANIMAL LEAGUE OF GREEN VALLEY 3 years ago when he was 20 pounds over weight and covered with scabs from scratching and chewing on himself for relief of the itching. We went the usual route of finding him help with several doctors to no avail until we met Dr. Lawton. He is now in normal weight range, no more itching or scabs and his blood work is normal. This is a great place! My quadrupeds were well taken care of. We recently moved to WA and boy, am I already missing the team at MEVH. We initially had anther great vet who was out of town when my baby needed help and we ended up connecting with ME. We were happy with the visit and since they were closer to our house, less stressful trips for my cat, we decided to stay. We worked with Dr. Dennis for the majority of the time and had a few visits with Dr. Pavlikowski. My cat needed a lot of medical attention these past six months, so we had a lot of visits. Each and every time Dr. Dennis or Dr. Pavlikowski would discuss history with me in detail, would listen carefully, follow up with me on the treatment plan and progress... and of course, would comfort a nervous cat parent selflessly. This is a very competent and professional team. I can't thank this place enough for everything they've done for my cats. And staff is just uber nice, friendly and patient, because we called a lot :). read more

If you look at my Yelp profile, you'll see I don't like to dole out one- or two-star reviews. In fact, I really tried to skirt the issue with this vet, writing instead about the vet we moved on to. But, then I thought, would I want an honest review? Of course! So, here's my two-cents. I made a snap decision to choose Monument East shortly after we moved to Tucson based on only two criteria. 1) It was close to our house (my dogs don't travel well in the car), and 2) It looks nice from the outside. I soon discovered Dr. Hurtado operates on the "I'll have my assistant bring in the medical plan" plan. Which almost always includes everything but the kitchen sink (including liberal use of his own expensive equipment). Ka-ching! I always felt guilty when I didn't sign off on the whole laundry list. What kind of uncaring pet-owner (known as "Mom" to my fur-kids) was I? On one visit, Dr. Hurtado mixed up the files of two of my dogs he encouraged me to bring in together. Two times, he spent more time trying to sell me one of this own music CDs than he did talking about my dogs! When my dread of going to the vet exceeded my dogs' dread level, it was time to look elsewhere. read more

Goes without saying. See earlier comments re unnecessary bill gouging that has been posted under 'TIPS'. There are many more examples that could be cited here but just wanted to make folks aware and to be wary. They are convenient to use for boarding if you live in the area. But be prepared for some ailment to be discovered and a phone call to run up another bill. $850 for a broken toenail, avg ear infection they run bill up to $400+ Brought in my older ill dog and in 30 min they ran a bill up to $850 before putting the poor thing to death immediately after the useless tests. Avoid them as there are plenty of alternatives. read more

As far as the other reviews, I can see how they feel this office can rack up the add-on's and extras as we have had that experience as well. That being said, we may have lost our dog - a member of our family - had it not been for the care and diligence of Dr. Hurtado and his staff. They even went as far as to give us the vet's number for after hours (as we were heading into a weekend) if our dog started getting worse. They were very caring, called to check in to see how our baby girl was doing, which we appreciated. They were patient on the phone when they checked in with our questions and concerns. Dr. Hurtado and the staff at Monument East Veterinary are absolutely wonderful, personally and professionally. My 15 year old dalmation was loosing her ability to walk. Monument East did a full assessment of her, got her on the right prescription and she LITERALLY is back to acting, walking and being a 7 year old spry dog again. She is BACK! I can not say enough good things about Monument East. My family has had similar FANTASTIC experiences with them. I took my two dogs in for a rattlesnake vaccine. They charged me $50 for each dog to walk in the door, plus the cost of the vaccine. My one little dog had a slight nick on her hock, and I mean 1/4 of an inch. Dr. Dennis told me to put her on antibiotics for 7 days. This trip cost me $300.00. I had to bring them back in for a booster shot one month later for the rattlesnake vaccine. I assumed a booster would not incur another check-up. Well, it did. It was $150.00 for a booster shot for two dogs. Dr. Dennis seems nervous around large dogs. I am very disappointed in this clinic. Do not go here unless you have money to throw away. read more

I've been taking my animals (2 cats and 1 dog) to Monument East for 3 years now and I couldn't be more impressed with their level of patient safety, quality of care and compassion for my pets. One of my cats had a broken tooth and Dr. Hurtado took excellent care of her as if she were his own and the hospital administrator was so kind and helpful in answering any questions or concerns that I had! Dr. Hurtado was kind enough to give me his cell phone # and even he came down to the clinic on his day off when we had to put one of our beloved animals down. This place was recommended to me by a friend, I had just moved here so took her advice and brought my dog in. When you first walk in to a room they don't ask why you are there or what is wrong, they present you a paper with the exam price and you have to sign before anything. I signed no problem, after waiting 45 min the Vet came in and said "hey hows it going, what going on with.........." and scrambled to figure out my dogs name. After I told the Vet her name he said "well how is everything going since last time", I was confused and the technician in the room quickly said "this is a new client". After the Vet apologizing he did the exam, he recommended that my dog needed a dental, I then let him know my dog had just recently had a dental before I moved 2 months ago. The Vet then said "oh ya they do look pretty good, I must of not taken a good look". As I was trying to hurry things up so I could just leave the brought in a CD player and headphones for me to listen to his CD, very awkward as I listened to it for a min and then said "oh nice" I left the room to pay up front. The girl who was taking care of me up front picked up her phone and said "okay i will". Right after she asked if I wanted to purchase the Vet CD for $15. I almost started laughing....really? Bummer, I thought I could use them as my long term vet. My dog was seen for some severe allergy issues in January 2016 and the staff was friendly and the medication they prescribed was very effective ($370 for the first visit and two rechecks that were ~$40 each) I can understand having some big bills at first, we were establishing a new vet plus he had some issues. In March 2016 I called to schedule for vaccines that were due ( I was previously told I could schedule with a technician) and they wanted to charge me for another complete exam! When I explained to the receptionist that I had a current exam on file they just kept telling me it was "the law" and I know that is not the case. read more
