I had a hard time rating this one this time. I love the monuts bagels. Their jam is 5 stars. The people who work there are nice. However, I went today and they were closing shortly after I got there, about 20 minutes. When you pay for food, you also pay for the dining experience. To imply they wanted customers to hurry up so they could close on time they bagged our food to go with out asking. One nice guy gave us our meals in the brown paper bag and then said he would go ahead and bring us plates. Then right at closing time, even though we are half way done with our messy bagel sandwiches, jam running down my hands, an employee came around and said "can we go ahead and take your plates? Don't want the dishwashers complaining". It's unprofessional to rush our customers to the point of taking up their plates. ** new review. Went back to monuts because I looveee making my own bagel sandwich because their jam is soo good.. Today I wanted to get a salad too. I don't eat dairy and my husband does. In order to share the salad I asked for the cheese on the side. They can do a salad with no cheese but they won't let you get it on the side. So there's no way to share a salad. wasn't going to ask them to just put it on half a salad if they can't even do it on the side. It's just disappointing because they try to say "ask about vegetarian and vegan options" but they won't do whatever it takes to please the customer. Oh, Monuts.... The food is great, both the doughnuts and the bagel and biscuit sandwiches. Sometimes the biscuits are on the greasy side. Today I had a chocolate coffee crunch and an orange ginger doughnut. There was only one register open, and the line was insanely long, moving very slowly. I wondered why they did not have an additional register open for takeout orders ? Seating is limited, so maybe this is a way to control the availability of the tables? Either way, we almost left a few times. Please expand or find ways to serve more folks-though the food is good, having to wait that long is no fun. read more

They've got to figure out there online ordering system. Wasn't able to orders donuts and a sandwich to go online so just placed an order for donuts. When I called to place a sandwich order was hassled then finally told they would. I can understand being concerned about not receiving pay for orders but I'd already paid for my donuts. When I got there was told I'd have to wait close to 10 minutes. On the phone I said I was pressed for time. The cashier was smug and could use a course in customer service. I ordered yesterday on the phone with no issues and planned to order for the next few days for special events, but I'll get my donuts and sandwich elsewhere. #nothingtasteasgoodasmytime. read more

Talk about quality customer service! Visited with a couple of friends to pick up some donuts, and I was told that they were out of the Chocolate Sprinkle ones I wanted. Picked up the Strawberry Shortcake instead, which turned out to be incredible, the whipped cream was on the heavier side but still delicious. While waiting for my friends I saw a fresh batch of the chocolate donuts being brought out, and I made a comment to one of my friends about how I just missed them, the woman who brought out the donuts had overheard me and slipped one of the fresh donuts into my bag. read more

This was one of the cutest breakfast places I've been to. I love that everything is made there fresh! I had a Blackberry Cobbler donut which was just amazing and then I had the Green Eggs on Toast which was so good. It was just the right amount of spicy and the egg was cooked to order which isn't something every restaurant of the same caliber does which I really appreciated. In addition to the food, I tried the Fresh Squeezed Blueberry Lemonade which was incredible! It wasn't too sour or too sweet and you could really taste a nice blueberry flavor. My experience at Monuts was great and I would highly recommend it to anyone staying in the Durham area, or just passing though. I'd definitely go again the next time I'm in town! read more

Monuts is easily one of my favorite restaurants not only in Durham, but the Triangle. Their menu is so diverse and I think there is something for everyone. My favorite is their breakfast burrito. The egg, bacon, maple sriracha potatoes...yum. I like to build a biscuit some times, or get a sandwich. Their menu is seasonal so it's always changing. I love their cake donuts (yeast donuts are good, too). I've never been disappointed when I've gone in there. They pay their staff a living wage and is considered a safe place. Even though I've always been impressed with Monuts, I've never been more impressed with how they have handled the pandemic. There have been some bumps in the road, but I'm happy they are able to operate while keeping their employees and customers safe. I'm not sure when (or if) they'll be able to open back up for dine-in like they used to, but I can't wait for it. There's nothing like having brunch on a Saturday in a packed Monuts and hearing all the chatter. read more

I've been going to Monuts every time I know I have at least 15-20 minutes to spare before I need to be anywhere. It's always super busy and guaranteed to be a wait for anything there. I like to get things to go because it's always super loud in there. I love some of their donuts and like to try the new flavors they have. Plus they have Counter Culture Coffee. A coworker of mine told me to go to Monuts to try the fried chicken biscuit because he said it was the best in Durham. After loving Rise until they went corporate, I've been searching for a good biscuit that didn't skimp on the ingredients. I was expecting a lot since my coworker really hyped it up. Unfortunately, I left disappointed. The biscuit is supposed to have chili-infused honey, ranch, and pickles. The chili infused honey was barely there, and when I asked for it to go, I got the biscuit and ate it immediately on my way to work. It was wrapped in aluminum foil and it was still cold. Super underwhelming and while the size is a lot bigger than Rise, it wasn't worth the $6.50. I will surely be back again for more donuts, but not sure if I'll try any other biscuits. I stopped by Monuts this morning after reading several reviews. The avocado toast and maple sriracha home fries are amazing. I will return!

1. Monuts has good donuts, and that's about it. 2. The new space is nice on a sunny day, but depressing at just about every other time, given the lack of windows and sufficient lighting. Very limited parking too. 3. Most importantly, customer service is atrocious. Half of the time, they mess up your order, and then when you bring it up to them, they blame you for their own mistakes. On top of that, very rarely do you find a friendly employee or one who even knows what their menu items taste like. Sitting at the bar or ordering at the counter generally results in at least one negative experience. Countless times have I seen people offended due to the mean rejection of substitutions, clearing of one's plates/drinks before they're done, or just the unfriendly attitudes carried by most employees. Perhaps if this place had the best bagels and donuts in the world, I would recommend it. However seeing as neither of these facts are true, it is a waste of time and money, and certainly will leave you in an unpleasant mood. Unfortunately, Monuts has taken a great idea for a restaurant in a friendly area, and created a space that is unfriendly, mediocre, and snobby. read more

Went here to see what the big fuz was all about, I kept on hearing good things about this place in particular for Brunch. The line extended outside as people were waiting to order. At first was not feeling hopeful as I am not a person to wait on lines like these specially for a place that doesn't even have a host to seat you, but I persisted and waited it out until I finally got to order. Once I got to the register I ordered the Tostadas Verdes as it was the first item on the menu that caught my attention, I also ordered one glazed donut which and a Mimosa to compliment my meal. I proceeded to look for a place to seat while they brought my food over. I must say the wait was worth it, the donut was delicious as a appetizer for the rest of the meal, then they Brough the Tostada which was amazing, it came with eggs(I asked for over easy) and cheese sprinkled on top with some green sauce that complimented the eggs and cheese, this was a first for me and definitely do not regret waiting on this long line. The mimosa was okay, they served it with a small MGD(beer) on the side which I assumed that it was intended to add to the mimosa as I as drinking it . I would recommend this place however go there early so you don't have to wait online. read more

So what to you do after a 5K - I walked not ran (honesty is important) - you get donuts. And when the finish line is three blocks from Monuts you definitely go to Monuts. In fact if I lived anywhere around Monuts I would be a regular - sadly I don't. Is it kind of hipster - yup - I assume the interview includes a requirement for multiple tats but that perfectly fine - that's their jam and they are sticking to it - the good news is they make great donuts. They have other things on the menu - I did not try these things cuz' if you go to a place famous for donuts you don't overthink it. What did we order - well all of them - three each of everything kind to be divided among a bunch of us. I can speak specifically to the Ginger Hibiscus and the Horchata - first they look great - second they taste better - especially the Ginger Hibiscus which was raspberry red with little soft sprinkly pillows of not too sharp ginger. The Horchata was covered by thinly sliced (and baked??) almonds and a touch sweeter but very good. The yeast versions were so light but held their shape perfectly - their is some serious donut wizardry going on back in the kitchen. The rest were consumed with joy and vigor rendering the two boxes almost completely empty (someone got a few to take home but not me). As breakfast spots go can't imagine it gets much better. The food is generally still good, but the entire experience of trying to order and find a seating far outweighs any benefit if the food itself. Trying to find a seat is a nightmare, even outside of the traditionally busy times. Some staff have been rude for no apparent reason, although I imagine it would be difficult to keep up after dealing with disgruntled patrons fighting over seating everyday. Monuts are simply put the best donuts in Durham. Most specialty donuts cost either $1.50 or $2.00 and they are well worth the surcharge over Dunkin' or Krispy Kreme. Coffee is fine but nothing to write home about. Food other than donuts is about on par with other breakfast diners. But if you are craving a donut or two there is no better place to be. read more

Hands-down some of the best donuts I've ever had. On the downside the soups (chicken tortilla and potato herb) were utterly disgusting. I would not suggest them. The chicken tortilla soup especially, lacked the traditional Mexican flavors and textures. The potato soup was green and completely missed the mark. The only thing worse than that is they did not allow me to exchange my soup out for another choice, I had to pay for a whole new meal even though I only took 2 spoonfuls. The bowl of soup was only $4 but that's not good customer service. The managers response was "we don't refund things because of taste". I was hungry after working a 14hr night shift so I smiled and politely said ok and ordered a breakfast sandwich. I guess I learned NOT TO ORDER SOUP FROM A BAKERY. First off, two is low, but you'll see why. Okay, went with some friends for nice day brunch, ordered the drip coffee, with sampling various donuts and sausage scramble. Counter lady seemed a bit rushed or bothered, she was really short with us. I grabbed my hipster coffee and scrambled to find a table. When we noticed, what seemed to be the only booth open, I snagged it ferociously. Although it had some dishes on it from the previous user, I quickly set my Hipster coffee down and attempted to ask some of the busy work staff behind the counter. I told one girl, and she walked by immediately and grabbed the dishes and left, never came back to wipe or clean as I was watching her. We were starving, and I am not above anyone, or a rude person, but I think there some standards you'd expect working in customer service. So, I grabbed some napkins and used some of my tap water to wet the table to clean some minor crumbs from previous people. I love my customer service, and I could've bothered them to come back and wipe this damn table, but I was impatient at the time, and decided to do it myself. Okay now food; my spicy sausage scramble was spicy and flavorful liked it, didn't love it, but sweet and hot. My donut was the highlight, we had guava cheesecake, amaretto, and apple cider. Guava hit the spot immediately, so sweet and tangy with that cheesecake. Amaretto was nice dive for dessert for breakfast, really spiked my morning, and I remembered it was Saturday. My apple cider was bleh! I've had a lot better in apple regions up in New England. Much better than this stuff. Their yeast donuts are pretty on point as far as I've tasted. Cake, you can skip it, but try all if it's your first time. Oh, and try some of their sandwiches, from what I had sampled, they were better than my scramble. Hope you have a better experience. I should preface this review by saying that I am normally very skeptical of hype when it comes to dining, particularly in Durham. Lines out the door are not so much a marker of great food or service as much as an indicator of how skilled a business is at whipping up social media froth. However, Monuts on 9th Street has earned its popularity. The food is absolutely incredible, and is consistently well done - try any of the sandwiches made with fresh biscuits and local sausage - I have literally dreamed of them on occasion. The coffee and sweets are fantastic. The prices are reasonable. I would suggest coming in early or late (work around the brunch/lunch crowd) as the place turns into a madhouse during peak hours and seating becomes limited. The staff is, however, miraculously on point even at the busiest of times, so if you can't avoid the lunch rush, you won't have to sacrifice good service. Monuts is definitely a hotspot to rely on. read more

I can sum up my whole experience as "disappointing". Went there today for a breakfast with a friend, the line was long which always gets me excited because I think "oh this place must rock"... not so much. It was so uncomfortably hot in there, I do hope the management reads this and does something about that. I was literally sweating while eating, which is rather unpleasant, my friend was as well. The acoustics are horrible, and it is so loud in there you can't hear yourself think. It was pricey, the coffee taste burnt and I got an everything bagel that literally had NOTHING on it. I should have taken a picture, it was a joke. I needed to go up and request ketchup, salt and pepper for my breakfast sandwich to taste like anything (so bland, I got the everything bagel with sausage and scrambled egg). Then for dessert, I tried a chocolate donut, I took two bites and put it back in the bag. I didn't want to waste the calories on such a bland tasting donut , while sitting in a sweatbox with voices blaring in my ear. So dissapointed, I would not go back here at this point, too pricey, no flavor in the food and uncomfortably hot and loud. No thanks. read more

My favorite breakfast place in the area, hands-down. Delicious donuts and breakfast sandwiches. New location is much better. Don't expect it to be a fast in-an-out kind of deal - this isn't a fast food style donut chain. This is the equivalent of going to an actual restaurant because it IS an actual restaurant. This place definitely gets credit for having such a nice venue. I love the light fixtures, booths, artwork etc. That being said, during rush hour it gets VERY noisy and hectic. You cannot hear yourself think!! Line is often out the door! Not too much seating, which can make it become very squished when it is packed to capacity. Food is pretty good, but quite heavy and not too friendly on the waistline! I generally would recommend more of a quieter place if you are looked for a calm place to enjoy lunch. read more

Love this place - you guys are great. One thing though. No one wants whole lemon slices in their food. No one. No. One. Just stop it. Squeezed lemon? Great. Lemon zest? Delicious. But biting into a bagel sandwich only to find mid chew that you have started the digestive process on a big 'ol chuck of pith and seed is probably almost as upsetting as finding out mid copulation that your partner isn't using a condom. Food is good, but hold the attitude. We had a Sunday brunch here with family (including 3 kids). Everyone was satisfied with their sandwiches, but the experience was a bit marred by attitude from the staff. I've gotten the donuts here a few times and don't find them to be anything special. Well, they're donuts, so I guess that makes them special, but not really worth the hype, long lines (on weekends), and price tag. We skipped work the other day and stopped by for an early lunch just to see what else they have going on. The biscuit sandwich we both had was absolutely delicious! Best doughnuts in the Triangle! Love the owners and have been a customer since they were selling at rodeos from their doughnut bike. Very glad they've started making filled doughnuts, but most of the time, the filled ones are way too small. Sandwiches, bagels, etc. are all really good and interesting. Food was good, service was crummy. The woman taking our order seemed uninterested and made it clear she wasn't listening. I wasn't impressed by the variety of donuts, although the funfetti donut was very good. I was also unimpressed that I wasn't allowed to add avocado to my breakfast sandwich because it was a "special" sandwich, even though I intended to pay extra for the addition.
