I was greeted with a smile and within minutes I received a consultation from Latoya. I explained the current condition of my curly hair told her I would like a more youthful style. Latoya listened and was knowledgeable about curly hair. I immediately booked an appointment for treatment and style. When you arrive, you're greeted with something to drink which I have never received at a salon and I was very impressed. The pampering continued with the shampooing, conditioning and treatment. I love coming to this salon not just for my nails but my hair as well!! It's a one stop shop. Crystal always does an amazing job with my nails, I never have a color or design in mind but I kinda tell her if I want Disney theme or and other holiday theme and she just takes over and does an amazing job as always. This review is long overdue! This is such a great salon, Everyone who works at mood is friendly, not only to the customers but to each-other. I often overhear them asking if they need anything or can help each-other in anyway and it gives a real sense of teamwork and warm, positive Vibes. When you arrive you are greeted and they offer something to drink. First time customers get a cute gift bag which is a nice touch. It had samples and coupons in it. The salon space is great and is right in the heart of downtown. They offer so many services at this salon (not just hair!) and I happen to frequent the salon specifically for my awesome nail tech/artist Crystal! I can't say enough wonderful things about Crystal and her amazing artistic creations that she's able to hand paint! She's done some pretty great techniques for applications and designs on me. I typically research some ideas and show her what I like and don't from the examples and she knocks it out of the park every-time not only in hand painted artwork with great color combos but also in shape! I get hand sculpted gel and don't typically go back for a fill until 5-6 weeks depending on my schedule. My nails grow out before they brake, chip or lift because her work is so perfectly done. While the price is a little higher than most, I'm so happy I found crystal and find it well worth it to have long lasting nails that I'm happy with everytime! All of the staff I encountered here were super sweet and kind on both of my visits. They made me feel welcomed. However, I didn't get the same feeling from the owner Latoya. I felt like I was not seen and made to feel like I was just wasting her time. I booked w/her b/c she came highly recommended from other girls with curly hair. Be aware, she double books you. If you're lucky, you get more than 5 minutes with her. If you're unlucky, she'll pass you off to someone else. On both visits, she left her client in the chair to come over and cut my hair real quick, maybe 5 minutes if that. Her client wasn't processing or anything, so I thought that was unprofessional to leave her and come to me. I felt like I was being squeezed into her busy schedule. Someone else washed my hair but then I would've expected to be with Latoya after that for the styling to end. However, I was passed onto the hairdresser who washed my hair, with no knowledge of how to apply curly hair product or how much to use, or what kind. Very sweet gals and we had nice conversation (on both ocassions) but they had no clue what they were doing. In fact, when Latoya noticed she was doing it wrong, she left the client (again) and came over and showed the gal how much product to use, how to apply it to my hair etc. I could tell Latoya was frustrated as she was showing the gal. I felt so bad and embarassed for the gal. Why put her in that position??? This happened on both visits. Again, it's that double booking. As a client, I'm paying for Latoya's time and knowledge to work on my hair and educate me on curly hair, not leave it to another hairdresser who is waiting for her next client to show. On both occasions, I asked the gals, what their favorite part is about hair. Both gals told me they love color and that's their thing. If I'm paying for a curly cut, I expect the curl specialist to style it, not the color specialists. Latoya had to show them how to diffuse my hair. There's a technique to using a diffuser, which these gals were learning on the spot. Latoya came back to finish but only b/c her other client was done. If this is how she operates by double booking, and passing off clients to other hairdressers, she shouldn't be charging full price for a cut with her. The only reason I came back a 2nd time was b/c on my 1st visit, Latoya told me that she was just "trying to keep the lights on". This touched my heart, and I figured well, I'll come back again b/c: 1. I want to support her business 2. I liked the products they used Again, the girls that washed my hair and styled it on both visits, and there were 3 of them (not including Latoya), were so sweet and kind! We had great conversation but I WISH they knew about curly hair b/c I would happily come back to THEM. After this last visit, I'll be looking for another salon where the owner values their customer's time and doesn't put her hairdressers in awkward situations. read more

It's unsurprisingly difficult to find a colorist in this part of California, so I was happy to learn that this salon did "fashion" colors. Fashion colors are bright colors that are typically difficult to achieve using drugstore hair dyes and very hard to maintain. Mood on 10th did my hair twice, and the first time I did not love it because it wasn't what I asked for at all and looked too bright (indoor pics, hair bubblegum pink and purple), but the second time (outdoor pics with bricks) was more what I was going for. The picture I showed the first time for reference. As for prices, they were definitely pricey, but I understand given they are one of the few color salons around. They also quote you a dollar-for-dollar breakdown of how much each additional treatment, dye, service, etc you ask for so that you can choose not to overspend. I don't like being surprised at the end of the service, so I really appreciated this. An additional perk is the champagne with mango ice they offer during your service, which is really nice considering some of these services take 3-4 hours. Overall, the salon staff was professional, friendly, and I would definitely come back to get my hair cut, styled, or dyed. They might not ask you to add a tip so definitely use the "Tippy" iPad as a separate tipping transaction for cards when checking out. That's how they do credit card tips. read more

I got my haircut there about a week ago with Hailey and unfortunately when I got home I took a good look and saw my hair was very uneven in the back and there were some random long hairs. I thought I was just not used to the length but as the week went by I noticed more things. Hailey was nice but the cut was not good :(. I went to a different stylist today to get it fixed and she took a picture of my hair before and I didn't even realize how bad it was. Worst Salon Experience Ever - Save Yourself and Your Hair! I can't even begin to express how disastrous my visit to this salon was. I went in for a simple blowout and a trim to achieve a V-shape--something I thought would be straightforward--but it ended up being a complete nightmare. From the start, my stylist, Hailey, butchered my hair with uneven chops and sloppy cuts. Her technique was terrible--starting with a rushed blowout and poorly sectioned hair. After a botched attempt, I was handed off to Latoya, who somehow made things even worse. Instead of helping me achieve the look I wanted, my hair ended up uneven, lifeless, and nothing like the polished style I requested. When I pointed out the disaster, instead of owning up to their mistakes, they tried to gaslight me, insisting that my hair looked fine. I was told the cut was "exactly what I asked for," which was not true at all. They waived the fee, but that didn't make up for the fact that I was treated poorly and disrespected. There was zero accountability for leaving my hair in such a state. To make matters worse, Latoya started cutting without even confirming the style with me, making everything worse. I didn't ask for a shorter cut, yet that's exactly what I got. This salon has no regard for its clients or their time. They tried to justify their mistakes by waiving the fee, but I'm left feeling embarrassed, unsatisfied, and wrong for not speaking up more. This was a Christmas gift to myself, and it turned into a total disappointment. If you value your hair and your sanity, do yourself a favor and avoid this place at all costs. They couldn't even get a simple haircut right, and their customer service was appalling. I went in for a blowout and makeup appointment and was charged 175 dollars. My makeup came out horrible, separated within a couple hours. Had to use my own lip liner, lipstick, lashes and lash glue. Took her an 1 1/2 to do my makeup and had to rush through my blowout. She also did the blowout second like who does that? The whole time she was washing my hair I was worried water would splash on my face from the wash or I would sweat off my makeup from the hot blow dry. I had to keep correcting her and how to do my eyebrows. Left a line on my jawline she did not blend in to the neck. Latoya the owner is extremely rude. She asked me over the phone "well then what do you want? a refund? " Then when I said yes she refused to refund for all of it. Why did you even ask then??? This would be a 5 star review if it were just based on the staff I have had services from or had contact with, but unfortunately I have to base it on the entire experience. First the props, Crystal is the most incredible nail artist. She is so talented and I look forward to my appointments. I found her when we first moved here 2 years ago and haven't looked back. I would recommend her services to anyone looking for a nail tech that will give you her best (which is awesome) and will not damage your nails. She does art out of this world as well! Next, Ashley is the best! She stepped in when my previous colorist moved out of the area. I have a LOT of hair that takes in upwards of an hour to apply color to and to make matters worse it is a bit color resistant. Ashley worked tirelessly to get the color to where we (mostly me) were both pleased with the results. She is awesome and does an amazing job of covering my gray and dealing with my massively thick wavy hair. All of the staff I have had contact with have been amazing and are very service oriented. I would recommend the salon to anyone looking for hair, nail, lash or makeup services with only one exception . . . There have been a few times I have been in the salon and the owner, LaToya, made things uncomfortable. My best friend and her husband are successful salon owners in the metro DC area and I know what an awesome salon work environment looks from the client chair. I have to say, when the owner is in the salon at Mood, that is not the same experience. I seriously get anxious for the stylists when I am there and she is as well. I was witness to a team meeting when I first started visiting Crystal that literally made me question returning. First off, a client should NEVER see an owner address the staff as a whole and more so should not see the owner address a (now gone) stylist in the manor she did. It was so unprofessional I actually said something to the receptionist before I left. I had hoped it would have been an eye opening teaching moment but nope . . . There are other situations that have me questioning how this salon has been successful but no need to elaborate here. Suffice it to say that the staff carries this salon, because if I was left to have service by the owner I would have walked a while ago. I cannot speak to her skills or talent as a stylist, only as an owner/operator. Oh and let's not forget the fact that it is unbearably hot in the salon. Not sure if it is a mechanical issue, a cost issue or just that if the owner is not hot the AC doesn't get turned on issue. Whatever it is, if anyone is running a hair dryer you are looking at heat injury while sitting in the chair for services. I kid you not it is 80 degrees outside and it has to be at least 85 in the salon. It is mid JUNE, why is the AC not on in a place that regularly runs a hair dryer and does not have cross ventilation??? Not only the heat but the chemical fumes are not being ventilated out of the area. Needless to say, beside what I noted as negative that is directly related to the owner, LaToya, only, this is an amazing salon and I would recommend it for hair, nail or other beauty services. read more

When it comes to my hair, I'm pretty low maintenance and I don't "treat" myself very often. I had not colored my hair in 12 years and while I love my natural color, I didn't love the pesky grays cropping up, so I took the leap. I explained what I wanted to Ashley, who assured me that we could achieve a low maintenance, subtle highlight with the lift that I was looking for. I was a bit nervous at first, but she was confident in her work and she definitely nailed the result!! I'm super happy and as predicted, my husband can't quite identify what's different, but keep saying I look "beautiful"! :). My curls even held up after a windy outdoor graduation! I also got a gel manicure and pedicure from Crystal, who coordinated well with Ashley to achieve all services efficiently. I love the colors she recommended and they look great! The environment was very warm and welcoming, save for the lack of a seated waiting area. I had an appointment booked with Laquetta (who did not show up) and had to stand for 30 minutes before Latoya decided to step in. Initially, when she started my hair (I needed my roots bleached and a haircut) she seemed to be rushing. Granted, I was very tired and not interacting a lot while she was doing it, but she seemed to be in a good mood otherwise so I don't understand why she was moving so fast. On a personal note, I mentioned my ethnic roots and she responded with "I never would have guessed!" and laughed. On surface level, this seems like a harmless observation that many would agree with. Most mixed individuals, on the other hand, experience this type of comment way more than they should. Bordering on a micro-aggresion, but I am not taking that into my one-star review. Just a note. She diffused my hair after asking me how I normally let it dry. I told her I air dry it and that it's not usually as curly as it could be if I diffused it. She diffused it, which I approved of. She then, however, proceeded with the haircut (I asked for a lot of layers) while my hair was entirely curls and ringlets. When she asked me how it looked, I hesitantly said it looked good. I added in, "It's not usually this curly so I can't really tell." She looked shocked at this. As if I didn't tell her. I could see her start to regret the way she cut it, but she didn't say anything. I didn't think about this until the next day (Today) when the curls went away. The bleaching process was expected, but once she was done, my roots were a COMPLETELY different color than the rest of my hair. All she worked on was the roots. I got my hair initially bleached at a different location, so maybe I should have specified this concern before she started. I would think she, as a hairdresser, would address this on her own. Worst of all: They charged me for a full foil. $281 for a root touch-up and cut. Worst experience since I was 15 in a Super Cuts. read more

I tried to give them the benefit of doubt & I am now regretting it. Last year, my two daughters went for a spiral perm. In pictures below, you will see that isn't what they got. They were very disappointed as they looked to the "professional" to know what they are doing. They didn't. I made excuses for "mood" as I did get a good spiral perm a few years ago. I have had spiral perms for over 40 years & explained to my daughters what went wrong. I felt bad for them since they did pay for the service & got ripped off. I told them I would do it for them. You will see In pics below what a spiral should look like. Recently I decided to go back for my spiral. When making the appointment I asked for someone that was experienced in spirals with the piggy back method. I arrived & I told the young lady that I wanted piggy back spiral perm. She acknowledge with yea ok. I'm thinking she knows what she is doing. As she was wrapping the back of my head, I noticed she wasn't using the piggy back method. I questioned her on it & she didn't understand what I was talking about. Using the strap of my purse I explained how she was wrapping was not going to give the same curl throughout the strand. She didn't understand. I pulled up YouTube to show her what a piggy back wrap is like. She seemed frustrated. She had a hard time wrapping my hair & had to step away. The ends of my hair kept popping out. I suggested she use the "end wrap" to help control the hair. She was not very receptive to my help, & said: that's not what you use them for! To which I replied " you use end wraps to control & protect the ends of the hair". She didn't reply. She never rewrapped the back of my hair as there are no curls at the neck area. There were so many lose rods to where I tried to tell her & she just said don't touch them. When she went to get the perm solution, I tried to get another employees attention to please check the wrap for me, but another employee told me she was busy. I felt uneasy yet hoped for a good outcome. Per Latoya, the owner, they do piggy back methods all the time! Really? I just taught one girl the basics with you tube?? She did a horrible job. Everyone that does perms should know the technique in wrapping the hair. The tension of the hair, the portion of the hair, the positioning of the rods all are key factors to a great perm, spiral or not. You have a messy wrap cuz you want to rush to get to the next customer, your outcome will be devastating for your client. This is a perm, I now have to look at & hate everyday! I reached out to Latoya & was told she would call me back 8 days ago & still no call...... I don't want anyone else to go through this like my daughters & I all did. Your looking for a perm? I was going to Las Vegas and wanted to get a new look! Hair and eyelashes well I got orange hair and told them I wanted to come back after the shock of my hair had a minute! They made appointment for me and then as the days go by the eyelashes started falling out and when I returned to get my hair fixed they said they would refund my money for the eyelashes! So they started fixing my hair but as you can see it is still orange! They then said it would be another $39.00 on top of the $320.00 I already paid them! They said it would have been free had I stayed the first time!!! But since I had to go back it was a whole different charge!
