The most underrated Asian restaurant in Riverdale. I love this place! Went there for lunch today got the pork chops which were absolutely perfect. The presentation was so nice as well. Definitely some of the best pork chops I've ever had. The portion size is great. I always have some left overs. Their menu variety is HUGE. I can't wait to explore the entire menu. The ambiance of the restaurant is really nice. It's smallish but in a good way--It gives off a more cozy and intimate vibe. The staff are always very nice and attentive. I have always preferred this place over the Hunan Balcony. Take out/Delivery never takes too long either! Note: If anyone remembers the Chinese restaurant on the corner that existed before Starbucks took the vacancy... this restaurant was at one point (a few years ago) offering the same menu. The things I've had at this place that I like: - Scallion Pancake Rolled with Beef - Dry Bean Curd with Shredded Pork - Chicken with Broccoli A lot of the other dishes range from mediocre to generic though, e.g. the Mapo Tofu with Pork. The Bun Xao (basically Pad Thai) falls into this category also, although I have noticed that it mysteriously tastes better when reheated the next day. read more

Had a taste for some duck but my original spot that I order from was far, so I decided to give this place a try and ordered half a duck for $24 and this is what I got. The little pieces of duck was mostly just crispy skin and dried up meat that taste old. I will never pay $24 again for duck that look like this. I put the brown sauce it came with to try to save this duck but it couldn't be saved. It went straight in the trash. They get a 3 and half star for the rice it was not bad. read more

Other than that...the place is delish. The seating and tables are a bit awkward. Since it's more like Family Style, there is not enough table space to accommodate both the dishes itself and your own plate when eating in a large group. Being half Vietnamese, I can be a bit critical when it comes to other Vietnamese restaurants, having had my mother make most of these dishes growing up in her house. With that said, I absolutely love this restaurant. Aside from the food being fresh and on par to authentic Vietnamese cuisine, the staff is extremely friendly. I never realized they were a Vietnamese restaurant and always opted for another take out spot for many hung over Sundays. To my surprise, one day I ordered the Pho (which really does help a hang over) and it was absolutely delicious! Since then I have ordered frequently, and each time it arrives warm and rather quickly. I have stopped by on numerous occasions since placing my first order, wanting to try things in the restaurant vs ordering online. I'm a believer of some things, no matter how great the restaurant, just does not translate well via delivery (i.e. burgers, french fries, calamari. Does that make sense?) Things to try! Appetizers: Fried Calamari, Szechuan Dumplings, Pancakes (with or without beef - both great options), Cha Gio (crispy fried spring rolls), and Vegetarian Summer Roll. Main Entree: Vietnamese Fried Rice (I love it as a main dish as it has shrimp, sausage, eggs and a few other items that fills you up!), Bun, Mei Fun, Sautéed Sliced Chicken with String Beans, Pho, and General Tso's Chicken, Sesame Chicken... to name a few! Ok, so here's the deal with Moon Star. My husband and I ordered there twice before finding something we loved. Always delivery (which was right on time). The first time, I got general tso's chicken. I found it sort of bland and soggy. Not impressed. Then, since I read the reviews and figured it was more of a Vietnamese place, my husband and I went for pho the second time around. Still, not impressed. So we decided Moon Star was a miss for us. A friend who lives nearby though swears by Moon Star and said we had to give it another shot and order the chicken with broccoli. Which I thought was a little weird, since that's such like a basic thing, how amazing could it be? So third times a charm, we got the chicken and broccoli and decided to try the scallion pancake rolled with beef 'cause the picture on yelp looked good. Turns out that was the right call. The broccoli was perfectly cooked, still had a crunch to it. The chicken too was great, not soggy, not springy like I've had at other Chinese restaurants. And the scallion pancake was flakey, and the beef delicious (though I didn't care for the sauce it came with -- would have been better with a hoisin). That's now our order at Moon Star. I give it 4 stars because those 2 things are so damn good, but knocked off one because that's the only thing we've found that we've actually liked. read more

So far the chicken and string bean has been consistently good. The basil sauce with chicken had a weird smell (perhaps from the fish sauce?) and taste that I did not like. I order from this restaurant about 2-3 times a week (to go or delivery). I typically get their Thai Pineapple Fried Rice with Beef(highly recommend) and the Dumpling Appetizer(super good). However, once I ordered their mango chicken and I did not like the flavors. Some of their dishes are amazing and others can be the complete opposite. They usually deliver my order within 30-40 mins. They keep my credit card on file using my phone number since I order from them so often. Their staff is fantastic and they speak English. I will eventually make it through their whole menu one order at a time. I feel like their food is made fresh all the time. Their food is never greasy or makes me feel sick or bloated afterwards. Delivery was prompt via Grubhub. There is a delivery fee however. We ordered the chicken pineapple fried rice which was oily and tasteless. Please, stop with the red onions! They add red onions to everything. We also got the scallion pancake rolled with beef. The scallion pancake itself wasn't bad but the beef was cheap meat with tons of grizzle and tough to chew. My husband ordered the basil chicken which he described as a vegetarian dish because it was loaded with tofu and very little chicken. Dish is also described as spicy which it was not. This is our second time trying this place and we are disappointed. My first order here was pad Thai and to my disappointment it was the worst pad Thai I'd ever had. Loaded with red onions. It's made with only white meat and is such better quality than other Chinese places. The summer rolls are huge and could be a meal by itself but it is listed in the appetizers section. I placed my order for delivery on a Saturday evening. The food was mediocre. I ordered pineapple rice, mango chicken and pork dumplings. Everything tasted bland except for the pork dumplings but the sauce that came with it didn't taste good. I also ordered an iced tea. They placed mostly ice in a very small cup. The restaurant didn't put any utensils in my bag either. It was a good thing that I was at a location that had utensils! I don't think I'll be ordering from this restaurant again.
