My friend and I were in town for an event and looking for a place to grab an early dinner beforehand when I came across Moonstruck. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant was located in a multi-floor home on Wesley Lake, just around the corner from the hustle and bustle of Cookman Avenue. The first floor was more of a bar and lounge, and they had a live jazz band on the evening we visited[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We checked in with the hostess and were escorted up to the second floor dining room, which was a charming spot that was breezy and comfortable, yet refined.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The floor also had its own bar. Our server was on top of things, but was also clearly newer to the place. Regardless, once we got settled, she took our drink orders, which had taken us some time to decide on since the menu was creative and vast. I went with A Sidecar Named Desire, which included Courvoisier VSOP, Cointreau, Chinola passionfruit liqueur, and fresh lemon juice. I adore passion fruit and had always liked sidecars as well, so I figured it was worth a try, and I loved it! It had a good balance of tart sweetness and smokiness. My friend similarly enjoyed her spicy margarita, and we both imbibed while picking on some bread and herb butter. For our meal, we decided to start by sharing the Greek Salad, which was a massive bowl of romaine topped with tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, red onions, and Kalamata olives. We left off the feta cheese, but enjoyed the seasoned dressing made of red wine vinegar, honey, salt, oregano, and olive oil. It was a fresh and flavorful mix of vegetables that was a pleasure to eat. The entree options were endless and offered something for everyone. I wound up going with the Chilean Sea Bass, which was served over sweet onions and potatoes in a tomato herb reduction. The fish was tender and perfectly cooked. It was a light and tasty dish that seemed perfect for the Spring season. After our meals we were a bit too full for dessert, but we decided to get a second round of drinks, mainly because I was dying to try their Pistachio Espresso-Tini. Wow, was that drink delicious! It blended Ketel One Vodka, Mozart White Chocolate Liqueur, natural pistachio flavor, and fresh espresso. The coffee notes were not super prevalent, but the creaminess, nuttiness was the real highlight. It was a decadent way to end a delicious meal. After we settled the bill and headed downstairs, I noticed several bowls of after-dinner mints, which were a nice touch. Let me start by saying I've never had a bad experience at Moonstruck before, but as I sit here violently sick and sweating like the scene from Bridesmaids, I had to knock back some stars. My short rib ragu was actually delicious. Unfortunately, my wife saved me half her chicken dish and the piece I ate turned out to still be raw. I stopped eating once I noticed, but the damage was already done. Also, quick PSA on the dirty martini: it's shaken with blue cheese and comes out looking more like blue cheese dressing than a martini. We chose Moonstruck because we met many moons ago, on this date, in Asbury Park. We had a 515 reservation and we arrived on time. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We were seated at a back corner table~ I was facing the elevator, with the bar to my left and a window overlooking the parking lot to my right. It honestly felt like the least desirable table in the Restaurant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Normally, we would've asked to move, but since it was a special evening, we decided to let it go and focus on enjoying our time together. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The Restaurant was nearly empty when we arrived and still empty when we left at 6:30, so it was disappointing knowing other tables were available that may have offered a nicer atmosphere where we could've got a better feel for the vibe.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The wait staff was friendly and attentive, and our cocktails were very good. We started with the shrimp cocktail~ four medium sized shrimp served with cocktail sauce that was quite bland, lacking, horseradish or notable seasoning, along with a dry lemon wedge. My husband ordered the filet and lobster tail special. He requested the filet, rare, and it was prepared correctly. He was satisfied with his meal. I ordered the chicken Milanese. Unfortunately, it was very dry.~ a dry chicken cutlet topped with dry arugula, served with chopped tomatoes on the side and a scoop of mashed potatoes, again the lemon wedge was dry. Overall, my entrée was very disappointing. We chose not to order dessert or coffee. Although we certainly did not expect any fanfare for our anniversary, I had noted in our reservation profile that we were celebrating a special occasion. It would have been nice to have that acknowledged in some small way.~ even a simple " Happy Anniversary " would've made the evening feel more personal. Given the occasion, the empty dining room, the table placement, and the underwhelming food, the evening did not feel special. We came into Moonstruck on a Saturday night and had an overall good experience! For food we got the Pear flatbread, Oysters and Shrimp Cocktail - all were great and no complaints at all! For my main I had the 2Lb Lobster, it was by no means bad and had a decent amount of meat. The only issue with it was that it was slightly overcooked so the meat was a bit more rubbery than I typically prefer. I have to give it to the bartender and our server as I requested the dirtiest martini possible with copious olives and they delivered! Service in general was perfect, I wish I got his name but our server (from Rockland County NY) was great and elevated our experience. Deeply disappointing. Ambiance and service were both good though I must say that our server was seemingly overwhelmed. We were a party of six. Only one of the six found their meal to be fine, the other five, not so much. One of the meals was so inedible and off-tasting that we asked to have it taken off the bill, which they did. That member of our party was so disgusted that they refused the offer of a substitute meal. Some meals came with what were clearly frozen mixed vegetables. After-dinner cappuccinos were barely warm and totally lacked any coffee flavor. Someone need to learn how to make them or take them off the menu. My husband and I were visiting Asbury Park for the week and decided to check out Moonstruck for dinner (after passing by it many times during previous trips). My wife brought me here for my birthday weekend, having seen it be well reviewed and well-regarded by locals, and it didn't disappoint. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Being located right along the river in downtown Asbury provides a scenic backdrop should you be so lucky be seated at a window.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My birthday was very fortunate having landed on restaurant week in Asbury, of which Moonstruck also participate. As part of restaurant week, we received three-courses for the same cost as entree ordinarily would on its own. I began with a cream of sweet potato soup that was thick, creamy, and delicious. This was followed by an everything crusted Salmon that I very much enjoyed. I find that while a lot of restaurants offer salmon, few prepare it as well as the offering Moonstruck has here, being perfectly cooked and well seasoned with everything seasoning. It was topped off with a pumpkin cheesecake that was just sweet enough to satisfy. Unfortunately, we had a bad experience at Moonstruck. We went on a Friday night. The waiter took 25 minutes to come over to us to take our drink order. We couldn't even catch his eye beforehand. We were ready to order food but he actually ran off before we could do so. Didn't even look at us. I've never seen anything like it. We were sitting there for an hour before our food came out. There was no apology or anything from anyone. We actually thought about going somewhere else but it was so late at that point that we didn't know where else we would be able to get in. We were in Asbury Park on Halloween to pick up a Craig's List find so I went to the trusty Yelp app and Moonstruck was ranked highly. This restaurant was really nice and surprisingly big. The building is beautiful. We were seated upstairs and on the enclosed patio. We had an awesome view. First, tje bread was delicious and comes from the Iron Bound section of Newark. Love Moonstruck! They are back and better than before. Service here is always exceptional. They have daily specials and plenty of options on the menu. There are also a lot of gluten free options, including a gluten free pasta substitution for most of their dishes. I've eaten here a number of times and continue to go back regularly. My favorites are the eggplant fries (which are GF) and the shrimp & scallop risotto. Also, they make an excellent Boulevardier. If you can get a table outside on a nice day, it's lovely to sit on the patio and have a nice view of Ocean Grove and Wesley Lake. Definitely recommend! Tip: They don't take reservations.
