The food here is so delicious. We only had brunch though, but I highly recommend it. The service is a bit indifferent, but the food is good enough to mask over that. I came here with my mom, and she ordered the eggs sunny side up over focaccia. I had the focaccia egg sandwich with prosciutto, arugula, roasted peppers, and some kind of cream sauce. In both dishes the bread was so good. The focaccia with the sunny side up eggs was thinner and grilled, but it was still fluffy, chewy, with a nice smokiness. My focaccia was thicker crisp on the outside and fluffy and chewy on the inside. It was a huge sandwich though so I would definitely recommend sharing, unless you're a guy with a big appetite. We also got the bread basket with a selection of fresh baked pastries, including bomboloni, ricotta fritters, chocolate hazelnut brioche, lemon pistachio cake, croissant, and a sour cherry muffin.I only tried a ricotta fritter, but boy were these delicious. They were fluffy, chewy, studded with raisins and pine nuts, so tender and delicious. The chocolate hazelnut brioche was buttery and cottony soft filled with bittersweet chocolate and topped with chopped hazelnuts. The lemon pistachio cake was moist with a delicate crumb, very lemony with bits of pistachio. Everything I tried was fantastic. Highly recommend for brunch, but I recommend you come early since this place is quite popular and fills up fast. We came early on a rainy day so it really wasn't too bad getting in. read more

I've been waiting to go here for a long time and was excited to have an anniversary dinner here last night. However, what started strong ended rather weak. The ambiance is nice inside: bright & lively. They sit everyone near each other, even though part of the restaurant was empty, in order to keep that vibe. I didn't mind that. Pros: The bread was tasty and the Negroni cocktail strong and delicious. Perfect for a snowy evening. The Service was also excellent. Very attentive, very sympathetic even when some of the dishes were subpar. The Pasta with almond pesto & swordfish was very nice. Al dente, good amount of sauce, could have had more fish but still a nice dish. We split this and the portion was quite small. Cons: The entrees really lacked. I ordered the salmon with lentils which was inedible. The salmon was almost deep-fried, not grilled like it said on the menu. It was completely crispy on all edges and inside just oozed oil. The lentils that is with tasted bland & mushy--and like the oil of the fish. I couldn't eat it so I ordered the Hake. Though I said no oil, the hake was still completely oiled. It was hard to taste anything when it was dripping with cooking oil (not good EVOO). It was crispy as well and as a result inedible. I struck out twice and went home hungry. My partner got the special: porchetta. His was a small portion considering that a majority of the meat was fat and the crispy skin had an odd taste. It was decent if you like that type of thing, but not a juicy piece of pork that we had hoped. They felt bad that we didn't like it and gave us cannolis at the end. However, it doesn't make up for the fact that we spent around $120 and both left disappointed & hungry. This place gets 4 stars. 3 for food. 5 for atmosphere. This place just had a really cool vibe to it. The look and feel was almost as if someone's basement wine cellar was turned into a restaurant. The restaurant is on the main floor, but the exposed stone on the walls, wooden bar and the rest of the decor helped bring that feel. .On Friday at 9pm, the tabled were packed and the bar was humming with people. We were seated by about 9:30. If you are not okay with the possibility of potentially being right on top of another group, you may want to explicitly request this in your reservation. But you are at a quaint Italian restaurant, everyone's family so suck it up and enjoy it! We split a bottle of Pinot Noir, which was really good. I actually went an bought a case afterwards. For dinner, we weren't super hungry so we skipped appetizers and desserts, although both looked really enticing! For dinner we ordered the Fusilli con pesto e gamberi [Rotini like pasta w/ Pesto sauce and shrimp] and Rigatoni all'amatriciana.[Rotini in Marinara w/ Peppers & Onions]. They were both good. I found the pesto sauce to have a bit more liquid than I would have hoped. But then again, I know every Italian makes it differently. Came for my birthday dinner. After walking around the neighborhood and seeing all the other smaller, more relaxed looking restaurants in the neighborhood I was a little bummed to get to Morandi. It's really big and loud, much like Balthazar and I felt a little crammed. The food is really good though (prices aren't too bad either) , I got a caprese bruschetta with fresh buffalo mozzarella ($15) which was amazing and the spinach raviolis ($17). We didn't stay for desert though because it was super loud and the table next to us was in party mode. If you decide to go make a reservation! Morandi is one of those places where the food is good and the service is professional, but really you come for the location and scene, not really for the food. In nice weather they open up the entire front of the restaurant and fill the sidewalk with antiqued rustic wood tables. It's sunny, airy, and full of beautiful people. We ended up here by accident for our anniversary, we were going past it to get to the restaurant that we reserved for dinner, but saw this menu and decided to take a chance and try it out. Many friends have praised Morandi since it opened, and for good reason. I went here last Thursday with a few friends and it was wonderful. I shared the fried assorted seafood plate with my date, which was excellent given that they were light on the batter and heavy on quality of seafood - very good. Then the main course stepped it up a notch. I ordered the Orecchiette Con Salsiccia E Piselli and to my sheer delight, there were more peas and sausage meat than pasta (because I always want more of the mix-ins than the pasta itself, something that hardly ever happens with pasta dishes). This dish was savory and delicious! One friend ordered the Meatballs which also lived up to their hype (as per a friend's previous recommendation). The Veal special was good too. I have had brunch at Morandi's twice. The first time was a 5 star experience- we got a table that was outdoors and the food was fabulous. Last week my experience was clearly not so pleasant. They seated our party (of 6) at the strangest shaped table for a group with one person on a round table at the end in the corner, one person on a square table overlooking the restaurant, and the other 4 on a normal table facing each other. I'm ashamed to say that despite living blocks away, passing by Morandi near daily and always hearing rave reviews from friends and neighbors...I had never actually tried the place until recently. We planned to come by on a Thursday sans reservations, and of course with winter weather, sadly there was no outdoor seating. We walked in around 730 and it was packed, the hostess said the wait would be 45 or so, or we could sit in the bar area - so we chose the latter. We got a nice round table for 4 people (2 of us), and other than being near the entrance (super cold out, even with the door protection barricade), it was fine. Our server was fairly quick, as were we as we knew what we were ordering fairly quickly. We got the fried artichokes, friend calamari, shrimp and fish, and steak tartare special (just for my boyfriend) to start. Boyfriend loves steak tartare in europe, but has yet to find a similar version in the us, and morandi's was the closest to date (making sense as its italian). Fried artichokes were pretty good, and calimari was ok (but the fish portion was pretty foul, as they're sardines). Boyfriend got the pumpkin ravioli for his entree and i got the risotto. Mine was very average, would be good for an appetizer, but needed a little more to it (i.e. BES's risotto appetizer has shrimp and scallops, and is just an appetizer, but large and phenomenal...Morandis had only mushrooms and parmesan, but I don't eat a lot of the meats in other dish options, so figured the risotto would be a safe bet. Total bill was ~$100 plus tip, boyfriend left fairly full, but I wasn't...all in all i'd say pretty good quality wise (ie good ingredients, etc), but don't think I'd return for a meal unless I ate proscutto and other meats that are in most of the dishes. I'd definitely return for just cocktails however, as the bar area is PRECIOUS, especially when decked out for the holidays. read more

I've read a lot about Morandi, and a few weeks back while exploring the Village (in search of a random artist on the street - long story), I walked past it (it is very near Central Kitchen), which inspired me to give it a try. "Morandi is a rustic Italian trattoria from restaurateur Keith McNally. Executive Chef Jody Williams creates regional dishes from Italy such as Pici al limone and Pizzoccheri al forno. In warmer months, Morandi welcomes guests at its sidewalk caf." V and I made reservations for dinner, but then I got sick and we bumped our plans back a few days to a Sunday brunch. We made our way downtown after church and as we walked to the restaurant we realized that the Gay Pride parade was about to begin. It definitely would have been an interesting meal with a parade marching by, but it turned out that the restaurant was a few blocks from the parade route. Morandi goes a long way toward creating an authentic atmosphere for their restaurant, from the phone message with a nice Italian accent, to "WC" on the bathroom doors, shelves lined with wine jugs in the dining room, exposed beams along the ceiling, and artisan breads stacked near the kitchen, it all evokes the "rustic Italian trattoria" they're going for. Eating outside with views of New York city and lots of parade participants and spectators decked out in various attire walking by during our meal took away from the atmosphere a bit, but it was still quite nice. It definitely made for good people watching. Where else but New York city can you see drag queens and get authentic Italian at the same time? The brunch menu had some interesting choices. We started with Cestino di pane, a selection of sweet breads including ricotta fritters, sugar donuts, Italian croissants, anise donuts, grape focaccia and sweet bread. We got little pieces of each of the breads and it was nice to try them all, though my favorite was the ricotta fritters. Our server told us they'd be served warm, but they came out room temperature. I tried the Fagottini con prosciutto, a baked crepe with ham and fontina. It was very good with great ham and cheese tastes complimented by a soft crepe that was nicely crispy and buttery around the edges. I was very satisfied. V had Trofiette al pesto, a pasta with pesto, potatoes and green beans. I thought it would be odd to have potato in a pasta dish, and I wondered how it would be served. It was much different than we expected, the beans and the potato were mixed into the pasta itself, with he potato julienned into thin strips that fit well with the texture of the pasta. The pesto sauce was very good and gave the dish a nice green color. After our meal, I was definitely satisfied, though I wanted more - not because I wasn't full, but because I felt like I didn't get the whole Morandi experience. Next time, I'll go for dinner, and I'll sit inside to really soak it all in. Overall it's pretty reasonably priced, with good service and a great atmosphere. read more

I've always been a fan of Pastis but this is just way better in numerous ways- less packed, more interesting dishes, and good vibe. I ate the veal dish which was just great. Where do I start? As a life-long NY'er who eats out all of the time, I can not recommend this restaurant. The place is a zoo. Although the decor is lovely and the sidewalk seating alluring, the food is mediocre and the service is unattentive. The restaurant is a tourist trap. Our server was clueless. The prices outrageous relative to the portion sizes. The food was overly salted. All of the food we ordered was unusually delayed. One of dishes was forgotten, and when it was eventually served, it was cold. When we complained to the Manager, he sneered at us and reluctantly offered to take a diet coke off the bill. Enough said. Love this place. The location is amazing and atmosphere was so much fun. We went for a birthday brunch and got seated at the patio quick maybe because we had a reservation. It was really packed around 12pm. We ordered bolognese pasta , lobster ravioli, bruschetta and minestrone soup. The soup wasn't that good but other dishes were amazing specially that pasta! The meat sauce was flavorful and pasta was fresh, ravioli was creamy and buttery and bruschetta was just yum with nuts and honey. The best service I have experienced at a restaurant in a very long time. One of the most accomodating waitors whom I have ever encountered. Food-wise: they have a crazy selection of wine, and the waitor picked out an excellent one for me (after letting me try two). He filled up my glass very generously. We had a marghatita foccacia - which I would say was average, a cacio pepe, which was respectable, and my friend got a frittata, which she did not enjoy but which the waitor very generously comp'd. Visited this spot last month while working in NY. Glad I did, I started around 3pm for a late lunch which turned into a lunch / dinner. I was there with an old friend for several hours and was not rushed ONE bit. The pasta there is amazing, great wine selection as well. Wonderfully warm atmosphere ( more so after dark ). I would recommend dinner over lunch time although it does start to get extremely busy during prime evening hours ( good sign of course ). I met so many other diners at adjacent tables as well. **** I left my eyeglasses at Morandi ( maybe due to a bit too much of their great Sauvignon Blanc ) I called and followed up a few times the following week from home in Los Angeles. 'Harry', who works in their office was gracious enough to offer to bubble wrap and send them to me- he personally went to the post office and sent them. Fried Calamari was delicious. Shrimp was legit. Olive Oil was top quality as well as the Sea Salt. Almond cookies were tight. Service was great, they were attentive but not intrusive. Water and Wine was always full within a few minutes of drinking. Decor has a nice touch, great place to bring a first or second date. We were a group of 6. The service was good and the place was nicely decorated, but I have to agree with the comments about small portions for the price. I am not opposed to paying a little extra for a nice meal and great dining experience, but Morandi was pretty ridiculous. None of us were really happy with our meals. Half of us had small bowls of pasta that looked exactly the same (even though I'm pretty sure they weren't all the same dish). I ordered a cheese ravioli with asparagus. I have to give this place 5 stars because not only was the food delicious, but the ambiance was comforting and the service was outstanding. My girlfriends and I went for Sunday Brunch (I suggest making reservations) as we did which worked out well. The hosts and hostess were very accommodating and friendly from the moment I walked in till the time we all left. One of my guests was over an hour late after a few of us had already eaten and they were perfectly OK with it. One of the owners kept coming over to talk with us and to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. The place was packed the whole time and Brooke Shields came by for brunch as well ;) I had a special which was basically an egg sandwich on rosemary foccacia bread-YUM. My girlfriends had a kale pasta, and other egg dishes that were awesome. We also had a plate of nutella crepes for the table, which were divine! The bread is also amazing- FYI it comes from their sister restaurant, Balthazar (bakery). It is a bit pricey, but I couldn't complain about anything... so it was money well spent. I would recommend this place for a delicious meal, and laid back comforting atmosphere with attentive, friendly service. On a beautiful Thursday night, I shared a wonderful meal here at one of the outdoor tables. The flash-fried artichokes are surprisingly light (and even more delicious with a bit of salt added to them). The fava bean salad is delightful. The cacio e pepi (tonnarelli with pecorino and black pepper) is so simple that you wonder why you'd foul up pasta with anything else. And the pollo alla diavola was absolutely perfect. The chicken was grilled to perfection, with a great-tasting char, retained its flavor and juiciness, and was really just wonderful. Food was great - service was a bit strange. Morandi is just okay. I came here for my girlfriends birthday the other day. We were seated around 7:30 and didn't end up leaving till around 11 pm. During that period, lots of wine was consumed (the wine was triple then food). The food was just okay. We ordered a bunch of food to split: cheese tray, pumpkin risotto, calimari, and risotto fritters. Each dish was standard Italian fare, nothing really too great but nothing too bad either. Overall, this place is a solid 3 stars, but earns a 4 for a few reasons. The waiter was nice and did not rush us and the ambiance was also a little loud so you can have a animated conversation without getting glaring looks from others. Note, I only came here for drinks - so I will have to update this once I've actually eaten a meal here. We tried some other places which were too crowded this late in the evening (10/10:30pm on a Friday). We walked in and the place was bustling for sure, but it at least was laid out with a narrow walkway behind the bar area - which was nice. They had a decent selection of wines by the glass, which is always a key element to a fine Italian restaurant. Aside from the typical culprit of savignon blanc, I did not know any of the others in the listing. The bartender was very good at talking through the options and recommending something he thought I would like based on some of my favorites - and I'll say I really liked the Fiano "Paestum" San Giovanni '06 he recommended. Now, he wasn't too social in general. My date commented he was not sure if he was just a jerk or if he thought he was too cool to be bothered. I didn't mind overlooking that since I liked the space overall. Great place to grab a drink if you don't mind the loud crowd. read more
