Morandi has been holding down the West Village since 2007, which feels about right because Keith McNally rarely builds anything that loses its pulse. It has that particular McNally gift: stylish without being self-serious, lively without becoming a circus, and familiar without feeling tired. I love it inside, with the brick and warm lighting, and I love it outside, where the sidewalk tables make the Village feel like its own little stage. It maps closer to my beloved Lucky Strike than to the bigger commercial engines of Balthazar, Pastis, or Odeon, and I mean that as high praise. The food has always struck me as exactly what a neighborhood trattoria should offer: comfort, consistency, and enough energy to keep the night moving. I cannot reconstruct every dish I have ordered there, which in some ways feels fitting because Morandi is more about the total rhythm than any single plate. McNally has always understood that a restaurant can be buzzy and still make regulars feel recognized, which is much harder than it looks. Morandi has that quality in a softer key, with more intimacy and less theater. Luis deserves the loudest possible shoutout here. I knew him from Lucky Strike, where he was one of the great hands-on operators I have ever watched globally, and it is a true pleasure to see him still working within the McNally orbit after Lucky Strike closed. From what I understand, he helps run the bar here, and that makes perfect sense because he is trustworthy, graceful under pressure, and irreplaceable in the old-school hospitality sense. I wrote a more intimate tribute to Lucky Strike, but Morandi deserves its own praise too: it is a cozy, generous, beautifully run West Village staple, and Luis remains the GOAT. read more

My wife and I ate here on a Tuesday night before a show at Village Vanguard. If you are looking for an intimate dinner, this is not the place. It was bustling with activity and very crowded. The tables are very close together and if you are a party of two you will definitely get to know your neighbors. The decor made me feel like I had gone back in time. The wooden beamed ceilings made it very rustic with a great old school vibe. The service was excellent. Everyone was so pleasant and attentive from the moment we sat down and throughout the whole meal. Kudos to the team! Most importantly the food was outstanding! First the bread, which could be the best bread brought to any table that I have ever sat at. Crispy crust with a light and airy center. I could eat a whole loaf myself. We then had the mussels which had a subtle,but very flavorful broth. Along side it was more bread which was grilled and perfect to soak up that amazing broth. My wife loved the broth so much she was drinking it like soup. We then had the branzino, lemon pasta and broccolini. The fish was light and perfectly cooked and had a unique sauce with olives and citrus. It was savory and slightly sweet. I've never had a sauce like that before and found myself wanting more. The lemon pasta was so flavorful and scrumptious. The lemon was pronounced, but extremely well balanced with the cheese and the freshness of the handmade pasta shone through. The garlicky broccolini wonderfully completed our meal. All in all this is a place is one that I would come back to over and over again. So so pumped that I scored us a reservation on our weekend trip! Morandi was so much more than I expected. First of all, it's stunning inside. The old brick and the oil wall are beautiful. I came here with my friend for a Monday night dinner. The ambience from the moment we walked into the restaurant was perfect. It felt like we were whisked away to a rustic restaurant in Italy for the night. The staff were very kind and multiple people came up to us to check in. Although the waitress took a while to come back to take our order after bringing us water and sharing the specials, we could tell she was very busy seeing as how packed the restaurant was on a monday night. We received delicious bread and olive oil once we ordered, and they were kind enough to bring us balsamic upon request. For our appetizer we ordered the heirloom beet salad which was perfectly healthy and delicious. For our main dish we ordered the butternut squash tortelloni and the tagliatelle alla bolognese. While i generally love the sweetness of butternut squash, I felt the dish could have used a little more savoury flavour. The Bolognese was perfectly al dente with a great taste. The ambiance was good (very homey Italian), service was good, but I got a frankly terrible cut of steak. The pieces that weren't gristle were really good, but that was maybe half of the $50 steak. Our waitress also brought out some bread and olive oil, which is always one of my favorite parts of Italian restaurants lol. I was pretty hungry, so I needed that bread lol! For my entree, I really wanted some good, housemade spaghetti, so I ordered that with bolognese. Once it was served, the waiter came and grated some fresh Parmesan cheese over it, and it truly just made me so happy. I had made reservations for my friend and I for another restaurant a few blocks away. However, since I was early, I took a walk around the neighborhood and Morandi peaked my interest. Still loved it though. My pappardelle was hearty and super flavorful. The pasta in a ragu with lamb was cooked perfectly and I happily devoured it with each bite better than the last. I came with a large group and we had a lot of shared apps which all tasted great. All the apps were good but only giving three stars because of the service. I had to leave early to catch a flight, so I asked for the Panino con mortadella e stracciatella to go. They forgot my order and had to ask the waiter a few times (then we couldn't find our waiter so had to ask someone else) before they brought out the sandwich. Even fresh grated Parmesan sprinkled over it couldn't save it. I ordered the steak medium well. The beef was tender but the temp was off with a little too red still. It came with about 3 radicchio leaves and a small serving side of potatoes, which was probably the best part of all that was ordered. I came in May and it was such a lovely time. I can't remember the drink name but it was really good and I loved that it was a frozen slush. My sister had a non alcohol strawberry basil drink and it was delicious. Now before this experience I had only had a store bought prosciutto and foolishly thought prosciutto was not good. But boy oh boy did the Arugula and prosciutto topped focaccia not only make me a prosciutto feen but a focaccia feen too. It renewed my love for Arugula which had been worn out from Paris where Arugula is literally everywhere. We sat outside and it was literally magical. I love west village. Back to the main course. I had the salmon which was really fresh and seasoned perfectly. And the asparagus on the side with pistachios was also lovely with the fish in one bite. I have been to Morandi a bunch of times. Pros: Service and atmosphere. You may see a celebrity or two. Cons: Inside was HOT - just no way the AC could keep up. LOUD - but that's NYC for ya. The food: - it was all okay - it doesn't blow you away, but it's not horrible. For an appetizer, we ordered the focaccia Margherita which was more of a flatbread than focaccia and it was very basic and kind of bland. We also had the Olive all'Ascolana - green olives stuffed with sausage and they were very good. We did the cheese and meat platter and the cheese tasted like they got them at Kroger - just underwhelming and not memorable (I am writing this a week later) For dinner I had the pan-roasted Halibut - it was delicious but a tad underseasoned - could have used a few more shakes of salt. To start, the location is ideal because it's in the West Village and pretty central within West Village. There is plenty of seating inside and outside. The overall décor is beautiful and very inviting for any type of occasion you might be looking for. They have an old school Italian vibe so you'll see the waitresses/waiters in white shirts so you get that experience. Food wise, we tried a lot of different dishes. Everything on the menu is pretty simple Italian with decently sized portions. For simple flavors, it tasted good but wasn't anything too spectacular - on the different times I've been sometimes the chicken is dry but that's about it.
