Moreno's is an old standard Mexican restaurant in Metro Phoenix. Great classic Mexican food, you shouldn't be disappointed until you learn they now charge for the chips n salsa and if you want the bean dip it's even more. I'm sorry to say they will probably lose business because of this simple dumb thing but the valley of the sun is packed with Mexican restaurants. One of the worst meals I've had since coming to the valley 4 years ago. I've eaten at two other locations, and have always been happy. I hope it was a bad night. The best part of the meals was tortillas that can only be described as tasting raw. One of the diners was ordered and charged as chicken enchiladas with beans and rice, what I received was cheese enchiladas with 2 servings of rice and no beans! Normally I'd let the waitress correct the problem. But this was a carry out dinner and I was not shown the order before I left just handed a plastic bag tied shut with the three dinners inside. Ehhh, not soo good. First of all when you enter it had an odor of sewer. Staff was extremely slow to acknowledge we had sat ourselves. Walked by us 3 or 4 times b4 ever dropping off menus. After placing order, food was VERY SLOW to come out! Must have been a 1 person kitchen at noon on a monday {6 other tables serviced}..... I've been to Moreno's over the years, and to Gecko Grill extensively (since about 2006) before that. A little over 2 years ago my Filipino wife and daughter joined me here, and yesterday my wife and I experienced Moreno's together for the first time. Our experience was amazing, and as it was a day date, even more so. Today we found ourselves craving more of their shrimp mango quesadilla, green salsa and bean dip, and we stopped by to place a take out order. When we got home we discovered the order was wrong and incomplete, and I called and spoke with Paula. She was apologetic and went about making it right. We were on our way to our daughter's friend's birthday party, and after picking up the corrected order we dropped her off. Then my wife and I drove down the street, pulled over, and ravenously attacked the food like we were junkies getting our fixes! They now charge you $1.99 for chips and salsa. $13+ a plate and I have to pay for chips that are complimentary everywhere else. Food was overpriced for the amount you receive. A shredded beef quesadilla entree was $13.89 and it didn't even come with rice and beans. Chicken burrito was hardly stuffed with a small serving of rice and beans. The place was warm too. Not enjoyable when it's over 100 degrees outside. We will not be returning. read more

We've ordered a lot from Moreno's and they've been getting consistently worse each time. This time I ordered chicken fajitas and they didn't give me half of my meal. No sour cream, no guac, no pico de gallo, no cheese. All I got were some completely tasteless strips of chicken with onions, over salted refried beans and totally tasteless rice. We didn't even get the chips and salsa that they usually include with the order. We ordered at 3:45pm so they can't blame it on being busy. At $15.95 for fajitas, we won't be ordering from Moreno's again. We'll go down the road to On The Border from now on. I'm not wasting my money there anymore. Not the first time we've had a bad meal from there and the last time I called to complain and a very rude "manager" kept telling me I was wrong. Done in by sauce. Not really; done in by lack of doing something to correct a mistake. Ordered carryout order by phoning restaurant directly. Ordered grilled chicken with rice and a burrito. When ordering el jefe burro, was asked if I wanted red or green enchilada sauce. Surprised, I asked if I was ordering correct item, since what I see on menu doesn't come with enchilada sauce at all, it comes with cheese spinach sauce. I was assured one can choose which sauce they want; I explained I was interested by original description of cheese sauce but maybe I could try out their red sauce in the side as well? May as well make it 2 sauces, I could try it on the chicken too. Pick up the order and take it home. Realize the sauces cost FOUR DOLLARS EACH. Eight dollars in total (plus tax!) for red sauce. Red sauce is one the very Cheapest items a restaurant could possibly make and give to customers. I think if it like salad dressing to a salad; would You pay $4 for 2 ounces of vinaigrette?! Of course not. Aside from $4 (EACH) being highway robbery, second most irritating part was that the man on the phone taking the order never said anything about the charge. He didn't disclose that yes, we could order red enchilada sauce on the side, but that we have to charge small fee (or, in this case, a highly overinflated charge considering the item). Not a word was said. Long story short, we called and even though the manager apologized and stated "I don't know what happened back there" when I recommended they instruct their employees to inform customers of the charge associated with side items like red enchilada sauce, we were not given a refund. I was told that the owner "unfortunately" couldn't do anything. What?! He's the OWNER. He can literally do anything he wants. Every POS (point of sale) comes an ability to issue refunds for mistakes - All of them. And, you're losing a customer over this?! And red sauce is SOOOOOOO cheap to make, you're just being greedy charging that amount, not informing customers of your intent to charge, and then saying you're powerless (read: unwilling) to do anything about it?! And: the enchilada sauce is not even that good. So why are you charging so much for the cheapest thing you could make, and giving such piddly volumes for the high cost?! Is it a privilege to eat this sauce, or even be in its presence? "Extremely rare and coveted red enchilada sauce, definitely worth over one dollar an ounce!!", said no one ever. Never going back. Yucky! Well I was excited to try a new mexican food restaurant in the east valley. I had high hopes with the friendly hospitality desk & seating. Great waiter was quick to intro & order. But... then the food arrived - one order was correct & was what I ordered - the other was someone else's order. My companion was hungry & had eaten a great portion to find out it was not what he ordered. Mine was a pollo fonditto - it was dry -super dry & tasteless. Sad no one asked how the food was... no one ... side of mango salsa was as "large"small as their trial sized salsa bowls! Forget ordering that !! Have been here a handful of times and it's pretty decent. Chicken tortilla soup is pretty good, so are the Sonoran hot dogs. Chips and salsa are complimentary and really addictive. The Queso dip is very good, but very small portion for the price. Would have given 4 stars but service has been hit or miss. Sometimes we get out food out in lightning speed, other times we're waiting a while for a simple order of soup and hotdog...Just pour the soup into a bowl folks! I dropped in here for lunch on a whim and was really impressed by the service I received from Jessika. I let her know it was my first time in and went with her favorite thing on the menu and she brought me two types of salsa and and some bean dip with some fresh chips while I waited for it to be made. It came out quick, piping hot and was delicious. She checked on me several times and talked me into some dessert afterwards. I was so glad I went for it despite it being lunchtime. WOW!! Best Flan I have had in the Valley! It was so rich and creamy and she let me know they make it every day in house.It was so good, I grabbed one to go for my wife to treat her later. I was excited to see a New Mexican restaurant, but this is another Taco Bell Mexican place. The enchilada sauce was canned. The rice was decent, but somewhat bland. Beans were most likely canned as well. Tamale was typical restaurant quality, but I was really craving one.... so I took a chance. Asked for sauce and was charged $1.69 for a couple tablespoons of sauce. Will not be back. This place may be good for people who do not know authentic Mexican food. The place was filled with people who were mostly Caucasian. My Caucasian friends love Chipotle and places like this, so maybe they will do well by serving that clientele. read more

Moreno's is a mobile food truck, err trailer, that has taken up residence on the Southeast corner of Main Street and Power Road in Mesa. The truck/trailer combo is somewhat hard to miss. There are bright, scrolling and blinking signs affixed to the side of a colorfully painted 6 wheeled trailer attached to an equally colorful box truck adorning the Moreno's name. It beckons for your attention as if to say, "Come and look here. We've street tacos, grilled meat and Mexican food." Just like a moth is drawn to a bright light, so are people to this mobile, scaled down version Moreno's Restaurant. And it drew me in too! Driving by, I first saw the truck and trailer setup along Power Road and Main Street with people standing at the window and taking food away. Several days later, I saw that it had moved to the southern side of the parking lot and had taken up camp in front of a vacant business making for a bit less chaotic arrangement with easier access. The setup is really quite nice for a mobile food business. Right next to the food truck, there is a large patio area that has several tables with umbrellas and folding chairs for dining al fresco - they even play music to drown out the traffic noise while you dine. In the evening, the patio is lighted with hanging retro style string lights above the tables in the dining area. There is also a mini salsa bar that has two tomato based salsas, one is mild, one is medium heat with a slight roasted flavor and one creamy avocado based salsa, plus fresh sliced cucumber, lime wedges and pickled carrots with onions and jalapenos; they even have small to go cups for salsa and plastic bags for jalapenos if you are getting takeaway. The menu is presented on a flat screen TV and currently consists of Burritos, Tacos (street style: small soft corn tortillas), Tortas (a toasted bolillo roll with lettuce, avocado and Pico de Gallo - think of a warm, burger-like sandwich), Caramelos (melted white Mexican cheese and meat in between two crispy griddled flour tortillas - think quesadilla that is not folded) and Vampiros (a crispy corn tortilla with meat, chopped onions and fresh cilantro - think tostada, no cheese, no lettuce) all made with your choice of meat. Meat choices are Asada (grilled garlic & lime marinated beef), Al Pastor (chili & pineapple marinated grilled pork), Tripas (boiled & grilled intestine), Cabeza (roasted beef head), Cecina (marinated & dried beef), Lengua (braised beef tongue) and Pollo Asada (grilled citrus marinated chicken). Also offered: Sonoran Hot Dogs (a bacon wrapped hot dog topped with pinto beans, onions, mayonnaise, mustard and salsa in a split bolillo roll). Although the menu shows just six items, once you consider the choices of meat fillings and the various forms of roll or tortillas, simple math will dictate nearly 40 different menu offerings; enough to keep you coming back to find that perfect combination. The food is tasty, freshly made and reasonably priced. The Burrito and Caramelo are filling, as is the Torta. The Tacos will need to be in multiples to be equally filling but, nonetheless, they are tasty on their own. The meats are tender, not too fatty, juicy, and have flavor. The cheese in the Caramelos is quality, flavorful, gooey and plentiful. The proportions of condiments, ingredients and seasoning all seem to be in proper ratios too; customize it with the addition of the tasty salsas and you will have a mouthwatering combination. The service is prompt and friendly and the staff is happy to explain menu items to you. Once you place your order and pay, if you are eating there, you are given a number to place on your table and your food is delivered to you. Also offered are bottled water and Mexican & American soda. Credit cards are accepted too. If you are in a hurry, you can call ahead to order, and because Moreno's is located in the parking lot of a shopping center, parking is plentiful and pickup is breeze. Overall, Moreno's Food Truck is a satisfying and delicious option for quick-serve Mexican food. I have noticed that they are now parked and open for business earlier in the day, for lunch, and some days will go well into the night, so long as there are customers ordering food. Given Moreno's humble beginnings as a hot dog cart, and now their multiple brick and mortar restaurants, I know that their success will be assured as they certainly have the experience to do so. So long as Moreno's keeps it fresh, high quality and simple, people will only continue to flock here - especially if they keep this location (for the dining area alone). My one suggestion: offer a dessert option - Churros or Fried Ice Cream or Flan . . . or all three! Moreno's @Power and Main.... I've lunched here about ten+ times. I usually get a chimi; have to urge them to "cook the living hell out of it", and then they usually get it right. If it is not enough cooked, I send it back and they happily get it right (that's only happened one time.) The flautas are _very good_, but could have been fried a little longer. I will request this next time. I don't mind paying for chips and salsa. I'm amazed that other places don't do the same. I see lots of Grub Hub pickups every time I am in there. Somebody likes it? The staff is always polite, SMILING!, and attentive... they are ALL very pleasant and helpful young women. The clientele are about 50/50 Caucasian and Hispanic when I am there around noon on some Mondays or Tuesdays. To me, the fact that so many Hispanics eat there says something about the authenticity of their food? The waitresses seem to be completely bilingual, Spanish/English. I'd guess it is a requirement. Last time I ate there they brought the chips and salsa I always order to the table w/o asking after I walked in, along with the water I always have. I love it when a restaurant remembers what one likes -- those restaurants who remember their regulars (a regular after ten visits?) just make me feel so at home. AND!!!! It breaks my heart to say this because I have loved this restaurant for so long, but it has gone downhill. I don't know if it's the staff not being trained properly, or if it's the staffing shortage, but the food has been terrible the last 3x we've gone. The green salsa, which our family has loved since the days of the original Moreno's, is bland and nothing like it originally was. My daughter always gets a kids meal, which comes with a slice of orange and a strawberry-- her strawberry was rotting when it came on her plate. The cheese dip is grainy and bland. The fiesta burritos are filled with mostly rice and barely any chicken/mango salsa. I don't know. I love this place so much but it's not the same that it once was. So bummed. read more

Took an out of town guest to Moreno's last night with the family. Weather was perfect so we sat outside in the dark. Service was super slow and when they finally served half of our group, the other half waited patiently for 10 more minutes. (We all ordered at the same time.) Didn't get the correct food, beverages were never refilled, no silverware, napkins or chip refills until we chased the waiter down. Not to mention, some of us got sick on the food. Had seen the "taco truck" looking thing on the corner for a few weeks and new we wanted the give it a try once the actual restaurant was open. Stopped in at 10:30am on a Sunday morning, and glad we did. I saw some reviews saying the place was dirty, etc. but it looked fine to us. It's not a fancy place by any means, and it could use some more "decor", but overall it was pretty much what we expected. When we were taken to the table we were given a breakfast menu, much to our dismay. We asked when lunch would start to be served and yay! We were told it was served all the time, and the waiter brought us two regular menus. A lot to choose from, mostly the standard Mexican restaurant fair; but then they had things like "Sonoran hot dog" (pictured), and quite a few specialties that seemed to include mango salsa (so assuming this is a signature of theirs). After asking about lunch, I went ahead and ordered the "Santa Fe Breakfast Burrito" which came with a side of hash browns (the hash browns were not listed, but are always a welcome surprise!). Filled with eggs, bacon, sausage, beans, and peppers, and covered with melted cheese. How can this be bad?? It wasn't! We also ordered the Sonoran hot dog (covered with grilled onions, beans, jalapeño cream and mustard), which was tasty but needed more heat/flavor. The other item we orders was the pollo fundito, the standard chicken chimi covered with cheese. We asked for the jalapeño cream cheese instead of the "cream sauce" it came with, so that it mirrored what we normally like on this item. Fulllll of white meat shredded chicken!! Some places use a lot of tomatoes etc as filler, but this puppy was all meat! Very tasty. Charro beans were also kick ass, I recommend you get them over the retried beans. Chips were just ok, and their normal salsa was a little on the sweet side. Ask for their hot salsa, that was muy tasty! Good place. Will be back again. Soon! read more

I have gone to Morenos on Main St in the past and always had a good experience and the food was great. However, I've been away for 6 months and I went tonight for the first time in 6 months My mother and we both ordered nachos supreme which comes with everything. I asked if it came with beans & meat and was told yes.When we were asking about the meat choice, I asked do we have to have meat and he said no you can get it without meat and just have the beans and cheese. So we ordered Nacho Supreme with beans & cheese. We waited quite a long time I'd say at least 30 minutes. I was thinking well it's gonna look really great when it finally gets here. It was also extremely cold in there, they set us at a booth right under the air condtiining blower. Finally the nachos arrive we saw a plate of chips with cheese melted on top I think there might've been beans under it? Maybe? I asked this is nachos? Where is all the other stuff that goes with it like tomatoes, olives, guacamole, sour cream, and I was told "you ordered beans and cheese". I said but I thought it was still supreme just without the meat that's what I asked for. He said no if you say beans and cheese that's all you get. I was pretty unhappy with this it really didn't look appetizing so he offered to bring out 1 guacamole and 1 sour cream in 2 tiny cups. So we ate it. Mine barely had any beans on it. My mothers had a little bit more beans but it was so cold in the restaurant the cheese turned hard right away it was very difficult to eat. This was so disappointing!!! Especially after I remember their food being so good. I don't know what happened but they've gone downhill. Then when I got the bill it was a little less than $14 for nachos.Then I saw I was charged $2 for the little tiny tiny cup of sour cream and $3 for the tiny tiny cup of guacamole. Which brought it back to the original amount. Total bill was $31.17 before tip for some chips with a spoon of beans and a little cheese. We left most the chips since there was nothing to eat with them. Then I was told by the waiter if we hadn't eaten it he could've given us our money back but we ate it. Well I hadn't eaten all day it was 5 PM and I was kind of hungry even though it was the worst nachos we both ever had! And we will never go back to Moreno's again. Went here on a Wednesday. We were seated right away and had chips and three kinds of salsa brought to our table immediately. Our friends had a mojito and a margarita and said they were both very good ( good enough to have 2 each). My wife had the salmon tacos and I had the Sonoran hot dog. Both were excellent. He had the burrito and she had the shrimp street tacos. Again, both excellent. Although it was busy with only one waitress Jessica did a great job of keeping everyone served. I asked my nephew where he wanted to go lunch and he begged me to take him to Mereno's! It was really good, I had a fish taco and a shrimp taco. Both were super fresh and juicy (the shrimp was my favorite however because it came with pineapple) my starving nephew got the grande burrito and scarfed it down quick.
