I went to a friend's house in Chico for his house warming party. Waking up from an exhausting night of celebration, my stomach growled like a starving animal. I asked my friends for a good breakfast place to feed a hungry hippo. They gave each other a look and then stared at me and cried "MORNING!!!!THUNDER!!!!" in complete unison (sort of like the war cry of the old school power rangers). That was just too funny! My order of California Omelet (I think that's the name) came pretty fast despite the busy morning traffic. I sat stupefied by massive omelet in front of me. It has a healthy dose of vegetables and none too oily. This omelet is one of the yummiest (and largest) omelets I've ever had. No wonder the local newspaper dubbed it the "Morning Plunder". You can feed an entire army here for less than the price of an entree at an upscale restaurant! I like visiting diners, usually for curiosity's sake. Rarely do I go to the same diner more than a few times. However, I was pleasantly surprised the quality of breakfast at Morning Thunder. The mere mention of bagel sandwiches and other good eats by you fellow Yelpers is making me hungry right now! I'll definitely go back for more next time I am in Chico. Pretty adequate place. Definitely not worth the money (in my case). I love food. When it comes down to food, I don't mind spending money, but it has to be worth it. I ordered a simple breakfast dish and asked to throw in an extra sausage patty along with my order. I also ordered a fruit smoothie because why not? When I received my food, it was a good amount. Pretty big portion, not going to lie. The biscuit, however, was really dry. Probably even drier than the desert in the summer. Anyways, I later received my smoothie. It was great at first, but it later began to taste like fruit punch, just with extra ice to give it that smoothie-like texture. As I finished my food, I received my bill. My total bill was $20. Yo, I promise you that food is not worth $20. There are some options at places like Denny's that taste a lot better and are a lot cheaper. The plate itself was alright, but definitely not worth $9. The smoothie should be at most $3, not $4.45. The other $4-something came from that extra sausage patty I asked for. THEY CHARGED ME ABOUT $4.50 FOR AN EXTRA SAUSAGE PATTY. OH MY GOD. It was even that good. It didn't even look good. Gordon Ramsay would not be happy with the representation/taste of that patty. Holy Moly Morning Thunder! I love this little diner! :) I love the small town feel when you walk in and the staff are super friendly. The food you get here is definitely worth your money! These serving sizes can usually feed me for two meals! My favorite is the 2+2+2 with hash browns on the side... The hash browns are a must!! Cooked perfectly!!! Thanks place is known for their large portions, however it seems almost every restaurant skimps on vegetarian dishes. Me and a buddy both got different bagel sandwiches and his was monster whereas mine was a rather small comparison. Tasted good but cmon, can you not pile on some veggies? Also please get some sugar that isn't just shorty white sugar. And some ketchup that isn't sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. Although the food is generally good. The service is anything but. Sat at the counter. Was given a cup of coffee fairly quickly, unfortunately did not get a refill for about 40 minutes. Ordered pancakes and bacon. Saw my order placed and ready to serve. The server let the food go cold and then he served me burnt inedible food and although he went by me and my empty cup of coffee at least 5 times, not once did he offered me a coffee refill. This morning I wanted to go there but that last memory prevented me. This morning I'm Going to go to Macdonalds down the street instead, not as good but don't have to deal with this guy, this server who has given awful substandard service and feed me burnt trash. Bookmarked this because I wanted to finally try it, so I took my boyfriend here for his birthday brunch, and it was SO GOOD!!!! I got the biscuits and gravy with hash browns and he got the chicken fried steak. My hash browns were so nice and crispy, the biscuits and gravy were the most delicious I have ever had. I deeply apologize I forgot our waitresses name but she was so adorable and super sweet. Since it was his birthday, she brought him a banana chocolate chip muffin with a candle in it before we got our food, he gave me a bite and it was so good!!! The cafe itself is cute but crowded (a good sign that it's a local favorite); and there's really no place to wait other than outside (which can be rough if weather is challenging). Waitress reco helped me get a tasty bacon and eggs WITH a side of biscuits and gravy, which was pretty affordable; my companion had poppyseed french toast which was unique and tasty. I stopped here to get breakfast take-out on 08.22.2020 at 8am. I parked in the parking lot, put on my face mask and started to go in. As I was heading for the door, an elderly couple were coming out and neither of them were wearing a face covering of any kind. I thought it was odd that they had been inside with no masks but I thought I would just let them go on and I would get my food and leave. I went inside and all of the employees were wearing masks but three men were in there and NONE were wearing face masks. Then, more elderly people came in from the outside dining area and, again, NONE WERE WEARING MASKS! I guessed they were the people you would see at any other restaurant that come in as a group every morning to eat, have coffee and talk. That's fine, but we are in the beginning/middle of a global pandemic. Everyone knows or should know this. There is a health order from the governor that EVERYONE INSIDE A RESTAURANT SHALL WEAR A FACE COVERING to help prevent the spread of this virus and the disease that it can cause. The elderly are at particular risk of death should they contract COVID-19 and yet the staff did not INSIST they wear a mask. For that reason, I turned right around and walked out of the restaurant. If you people don't think the law applies to you, you're wrong. If you don't have the courage to deny service to anyone not complying with the face mask MANDATE issued by the governor, you're not getting my business. And frankly, you should be closed down for your lack of adherence to the law and the risk that it poses to your customers and your staff. I will never eat here. read more

I hear this place is a hit or miss for some and I can definitely see that. But I don't expect too much coming here which is why I think I am always satisfied. I usually come here after a night out in town waking up the next day around 6-7am extremely hungry and hungover. This place always does the trick. Come early to avoid wait time. Their biscuits and gravy I think is the best in town. The chicken fried steak I order every blue moon and it is a bit dry and overcooked so beware of that. Service for me has always been fast and friendly. It's a grease spoon diner-you get what you pay for but they are not overpriced like some of the other greasy spoons in town. Let's say the Roost.
