After finishing up dinner at Cantalini's my friends and I decided to get our birthday boy a drink at a bar before he headed home so we ended up at Mo's across the street from Cantalini's. The security guard was pretty nice as he checked our ID's and banded our wrists with a paper bracelet. The inside is pretty reminiscent of your typical sports bar. It's not very modern but I found that to be okay as I don't need my bars to be super luxurious. I just need a place to hang. A few of my friends had to take things to their cars so just three of us sat down at a large table. I noticed other patrons eating food which looked like your typical bar food. Upon looking around I saw TV's, pool and other games. A waitress took our order immediately and got us drinks. Gradually two friends who had entered the bar and went directly to the bar to catch some game scores came and sat at our table with drinks. Then shortly the remainder of our friends came to sit at the table. The waitress returns and in a not so polite manner tells everyone that this is her table and that we need to order drinks from her and not at the bar. My friends were really offended by her tone as if they had did something wrong by going to the bar to check out game scores and talking to the bartender. My other friends who just sat down were offended as well. Even I, who had a drink was offended. We would have sat there for a long time and ordered several more drinks and this waitress would have gotten a big tip on all the drinks we would have ordered but instead we finished up the drinks we had and then left. No one really felt like staying there after that kind of behavior. Boo. read more

Came to Mo's for brunch on August 15th (Sunday) after a gravesite prayer service for the matriarch of my friend's family who was just buried 6 days earlier. This review is specifically for the service: it was lousy!! THE DISGRACE IN THIS WHOLE SAGA: when my friend's mom complained she was told by the manager that they didn't even want to seat our party. Could this be cause the family is Persian?! OTHER FOOLISHNESS: The waitress was also the bartender - a mess - but that's not the real issue. There was a hostess, manager, and a runner and no one was helping her. We saw food sitting on the bar waiting to be served and when asked about it...yes in fact it was ours. Then there was more food sitting at the bar and one of the uncle's had to remind them there are children with us and the kids have to eat...and yes that was their food sitting up there. When my friend tried to explain the mix up with one of the orders (not assigning blame) the waitress became defensive - and to be fair she probably was frustrated cause she was overwhelmed and there was a lack of support. My food was decent and my friend liked her food. But Mo's needs a better system in place and should practice working together as a team. And don't insult customers cause the systems in place are not robust OR cause they have an accent. They could've told us every table is reserved and we could've went somewhere else. Even though we would've known it was a lie cause a call was made before we went to ensure they had seating for our large party. read more

Big fan of this place for a number of reasons: Great vibe, great service, solid food and sesame seed hamburger buns. I can't stress this enough, seeing the server (very nice and polite btw. Kept calling me hun. Love that. Felt like I was back in the small town I grew up in) bring out my cheeseburger, fries and side of ranch was euphoric. Then as she got closer the sesame seeds quickly became the focus of my already fixed gaze. A slight glow emerged on the seeds as they became acquainted with the sparkling Los Angeles sun. My imagination began to churn, each sesame seed was a star atop a galaxy of deliciousness. The Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever began to cycle through my head. I give Mo's 4 stars because I love the owner, Mo! I come here with my guy all the time and we are die-hard fans of the fish and chips, and clam chowder. Now my sweetie is from the east coast (MD, specifically) so he knows fish and chowder. At Mo's it is honestly some of the best, if not the best I have had. For that reason, I am embarassed to say that I have not tried much else on the menu. So I speak to the fish and chowder, and of course the service and Mo! Each time we visit Mo is glad to come around and shoot the sh&*% with my guy and me. He's a great host, that Mo...and a flirt! But it's all to the good! The place is easily a cool beach hangout and sport bar all-in-one being so close to the water and bike paths, etc. However, let me focus here.... The chowder is really some of the best because it is hard to find an establishment that will give you a very healthy serving when you order a "bowl" and with tons of clams; I mean tons. If you don't like clams a lot in your chowder, don't order Mo's chowder. But if you do, then you are in for a treat. And his prices are really very good...Mo knows what he's doing! The fish and chips are the next "good eats"! Fresh cod and light batter just like you would find in Maine or Maryland. Not heavy or cakey so the flavor of the fish comes through in all it's delectable glory! I sprinkle some malt vinegar and a dash of salt and I have a little slice of heaven in my mouth. Man, oh man! I think will take a visit there this weekend...my mouth is watering now! If you want to get in a game of pool, watch a game on the "boob tube", or just chill on a nice day, Mo's is an easy place to do this. I can not be called a "regular", but I've eaten at Mo's a few times. So many Yelp reviewers are one-timers I have to think their comments, especially the negative ones, are useless. Mo's Place is a dive bar with emphasis on TV sports and sports fans. It is not a Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, but I think Mo's steaks are better. Unless In am with a large group, I tend to sit away from the bar crowd at a distance where I can enjoy the energy and vibe of the Place, but can also concentrate on the juicy, tasty, perfectly grilled ribeye before me. I know Mo and I know he loves his bar, his kitchen and his customers, and he gives to them all his best. He is a true host. NOT ONLY did I find a dead cocckroach in the women's bathroom (after I forced to beg to be able to use it since they "don't accept an out-of-state ID". Oh, Mo's. The Cheers of Playa del Rey. The waitresses and female bartenders are mostly salty vets - that's in a good way (unless they don't like you). Walk-in here on a weekday afternoon and you will mostly find your standard (a bit trashy) inhabitants of the area. And they are probably pretty f'd-up because the bartenders pour a very stiff drink if they know and like you. One of the first times I was in this place, the bartender was fighting with a male patron who appeared to have nazi tattoos on his face. Turns out he was the boyfriend of another employee there! After he was 86'd, the two women fought about it for the rest of our visit! Dinner and a show! On the good side, the owner is very nice and is often around greeting customers and making sure everyone is happy. The food is very solid (yes, for bar food). I highly recommend the burgers, nachos, french dip, and their salads. I like how the kitchen is open so you can see them make your food. On the bad side, the place is crying for an interior refresh. The smell of smoke from the 90s is still remotely present. The carpet on the floor is disgusting. The chairs look like they rolled out of a mall in 1987. The shape and size of the bar are ridiculous for how much bar traffic they get! Two seats are next to the deep fryer and three seats are in a weird corner, back-to-back. Basically, half the bar is a bad seat. The punchline is, this is a good place for hourly pool, a couple video games, a likely good but unhealthy meal, and some (not that cheap but strong) drinks! 3.5 stars rounded to 4 for nostalgia. read more

I walked in on my lunch break I wasn't greeted by none of the staff Store was slow. Waitress was very rude "she greeted me with You might want to order next door I'm too busy" then she change it to she thought I was a bus driver, not sure what that means. But then she proceeded to ask a customer by the bar to take my order as she said things under her breather. I have a great deal of patience but I. I don't believe how she talked and looked at me as if I was not allowed in the establishment. I felt very discriminated against and I actually use to love this place as a I've relocated to the area it reminded me of home. Yes its a dive, but its damn good!!! Good food, cold beer, pool tables, parking... nough said. This is a great local bar by the beach. The parking is pretty good and Ive never had an issue, I mostly have gone on Friday night/ weekends. The servers there are characters and I love it...The people are a mixed crowd and you never know what you are going to get... Oldies, hipsters in golfers costumes, college kids, not that any of that is a bad thing its just a very mixed crowd. They have tons of tables for people to sit and eat, they have a couple of pool tables and a hunting video game, TVs as well. The food is pretty good actually. Large portions and priced well. The Tuna Melt is really good.(one of my favorites) the fries are ok. Onion rings are great but the batter is very rich. Reuben was ok Of you like Irish / homestyle comfort food, you will enjoy this place The beer is ice cold and cheap! This place isnt posh, its a real dive so it is what it is, still a nice fun place to hang out for a bit and grab some eats. Service was slow. Had to get up a few times to get the waitress to serve us. Chairs are uncomfortable! Food was okay but for the price could be better.. Coke was all syrup no carbonation. Marinara sauce was too salty, Croutons could be better quality I recall spitting them out towards the end of my salad. Stopped in here one night with my ol' buddy CC after trying to check out Tompkin's Square over on Lincoln. Well Tompkins was a complete zoo, and that's not a good place to have a nice chat and do some catching up. CC thought we should bail, and I agreed. We headed over to the general direction of Mo's, since there are a number of cool spots right there on Culver. Of course, parking is the biggest headache, but we got lucky and found something right on the main street...wooOoO!!!!!!! After strolling up and down the block for a bit, we settled on Mo's. The bouncer was super cool and welcoming, and invited us in with his super friendly smile and wave. =oD That's something you don't see much these days! As soon as we walked in, we could tell it had a really laid back vibe and was perfectly divey. Not a douchebag in sight too! An even bigger plus!! It's pretty well lit inside, and there was some rock music playing, but nothing overbearing. I think it was The Eagles if I recall correctly! We were able to get a table right away, and after checking out the menu, we settled on some potato skins, calamari, and some pork chops. For beer, there's quite a variety on tap, and they have plenty of bottled brews and wine as well, if that's more up your alley. The food came out pretty quickly, and was piping hot! The appetizers were quite good, you could tell that they were very freshly prepared and weren't some crap that was just semi cooked and reheated. The pork chops were surprisingly good for a non-pork-chop-specialty place! They were broiled perfectly tender and juicy and had some awesome seasoning and flavor to them. After gobbling down our grub, we threw back a few and were able to have some good conversation without having to yell above any racket. Mo's is a Playa del Rey mainstay, just like the wetlands east of Linc... oh wait a minute. You can't miss it because it has a giant 8 ball on top of it. So if you get lost in your helicopter, you'll know where to go. Anyway, the only night I've ever been to Mo's is Monday for Monday night football. Always a good time. Always packed to bursting. Get there early if you want a seat. Why so popular? Because Mo gives you stuff just for showing up. Every time you get a drink, you get some raffle tickets and after the game, Mo comes out dressed as something. One week he was a whoopee cushion, the last time I was there he was half penis, half clown, an outfit which can only be described as "penis clown." (I uploaded a photo of this) Anyway, after he comes out, he raffles off a bunch of stuff with the help of his lovely assistants (hopefully also pictured.) And the prizes are usually pretty good. I've seen stereo systems raffled off, portable TVs, knife sets. Basically, Mo loots Costco before the game and gives away everything he found. It's a whole table full of stuff and usually takes about an hour to get through. And if you don't get one of the good prizes, you always walk out of there with something. I got a whoopee cushion (when he was the whoopee cushion) and a stuffed animal that doubled as a slingshot. And you could also be as lucky as the guy in the other photo who won what he liked to drunkenly call a "boobie hat." The clientele is pretty cool but I've had my fair share of David Lynch moments there as well. The last time I went some guy showed up in the 3rd quarter who looked like a smooth faced Freddy Krueger. He proceeded to yell at his girlfriend for about ten minutes (you could only hear him if you were nearby. Then the "bouncer" who was about five times skinnier than him asked him to leave. So he yelled into the window for a while, they closed that, he went to the next window, and on and on. It as quite the game of whack a drunk at the window. Good times. I also went once to ask if he could air an obscure Australian sporting event. I got whisked back into Mo's office by the bartender and suddenly found myself standing in an area no bigger than a walk in closet, unintentionally blocking Mo's only way out.. Mo must have felt a bit cornered because he opened his top desk drawer to reveal a revolver. He didn't take anything out of the drawer and left it open the whole time I asked if he could get the Australian Rules Football grand final the next day. Very strange. But for all these reasons, Mo's is a great time because you never know what you're going to get. So go immediately... or wait until next Monday. read more

Server's attitude was awful. I have been ripped off in my own home town and I don't like it. I had the Greek salad with shrimp, garlic toast and mimosas. The salad took over 20 minutes to arrive. The server Chrissy Anne was belligerent, gruff and rude. I overheard her arguing with the owner. She's clearly miserable working here and boy does it show. The menu is way over priced for the poor quality of food along with the slow and marginal service. It's known as a local favorite and all but gimme a break! I have a pretty high threshold for patience when a place is busy but this was bad comedy. This is the first and last time I visit this hole. read more

This place was fun! Its super midwestern and a great place to congregate with friends for a beer or burger. I had mimosas forced upon me by the waitress on a Saturday morning, but hey, I consider that a plus. I split the fish and chips and a burger with my boy- and we both were completely happy with our variety plate. I wouldn't say that anything was extraordinary, but definitely good and tasty. This spot is walking distance from the beach, so after a greasy brunch you can plop on the sand like a porpoise. A group of 9 of us walked in on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. We were already pretty drunk, bar-hopping over from The Shack. And we realized we didn't meet the age requirement. No, we are all 21. Apparently you need to be at least 65 years old to be considered a normal patron of Mo's! Aside from that fact, we were greeted by a frazzled, 50-something, husky-voiced, life-has-been-hard-on-her-haggard-face waitress. She was frazzled because we were by far the largest group in there, and couldn't seat us. So, I suggested out loud that we could go to Outlaws. Her response was surprising, as she turned to look at me and yelled, "Oh fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck you!" It was absolutely in a joking manner, but the virility with which she spoke still shocked me. For this alone, the bar receives 5 stars. So, we settled in by the pool table and proceeded to play the three worst combined games of pool ever on the planet, while downing something like 17 gallons of beer, played videogames, and secretly people-watched all the interesting characters walking around the very well-lit bar. It was so weird because a lot of people were drinking and being loud, but a lot of people were also with their families eating. There was one lady... who was about 70 I promise you I am not exaggerating, who was falling over her table drunk trying to eat some French fries. She was a classy one though, white wine. They also get 5 stars because they didn't charge us anything for the pool, when it's supposed to be $8/hour. But that seems steep, maybe someone misheard and it's actually $0/hour. So, if you aren't a haggard local there for the senior special on white wine or already really drunk, this place may have a bit of an awkward atmosphere for you. read more

She reminded me of a midwestern type of gal who is so sweet, funny, and sassy. This is definitely a dive bar with probably a lot of locals but it's right by the beach and the atmosphere is great. To the people that are saying that Mo is the real person that the Simpson's character was based on, this is definitely NOT TRUE. The bar on the Simpson's is actually based off of the OTHER PdR bar called Thompkin's Square which used to be called the Fireside. My girlfriend works here (so I don't appreciate the comments from people talking about the "trashy women who work for him"), so I stop in often for food and maybe a couple drinks. To say Mo is a gangster is a pretty hilarious understatement. He's actually a really nice guy who is great with his customers. Yes, the scene is a little rough, but it is actually the regular patrons that make it that way, not Mo or his employees.
