My food was incredible! Both the spring rolls appetizer and my entrée. To attempt balancing out the deep friend amazingness, I got the Fit MMC Salmon dish as it looked both healthy and tasty, and it most definitely was! Also with these "low calorie" menu options I'm always worried it won't fill me up, but it was so rich and packed with protein I could barely finish it and stayed full the rest of the day! Atmosphere is solid (unless you're not a fan of Kate Spade purses of course), well-spaced seating, good color scheme and lighting. Really like this restaurant, but most recent experience was not good. Went for a special dinner (my daughter's graduation from nursing school) and ordered the filet mignon to celebrate. Couldn't taste the meat at all. It was covered in a sauce that was so strong and overpowering that it was only thing we could taste. Tried to wipe it off but couldn't get rid of the taste. The sauce got on the asparagus and potatoes as well. The entire meal tasted like the sauce. We were so disappointed and wished we had stuck with our favorite (the burger). The two of us had been looking forward to this special evening out because we can't afford fancy meals like this one ($116 plus tip). The waitress was wonderful, gave my daughter her dessert for free, and the cocktail was terrific. Overall though, we left feeling very let down. Not a memorable experience. read more

I used to love this place, good service and food, but today the service was horrible and the food was at best fair, and prices were high. Long waits for drinks and food, waitress very seldom checked on us. Brunch was very expensive and at best fair. Hamburger was overcooked, sausage was very thin and burned. The Avocado toast used to have real avocados on it, and now it tasted like a pre-made guacamole spread. I don't know what happened but my favorite spot for celebrations and take out of towners, turned into an embarrassment. I doubt if I will be going back. read more

Made reservations to take my wife and mother to dinner Wednesday evening. Pulled up front and dropped them off and parked. It was raining so I wasn't in a big hurry to get wet so it took a minute or two to arrive. My wife and mother looked upset and were standing by a big six top at the front door. The host tossed the menus down and said "sit here". I looked at my mother and wife and their looks could kill. I asked "what up" and they explained that the host had given them a hard time, accusing them of not having a reservation, etc. and then showed his ass by tossing the menus on the table. I said "there are other places to eat and let's go". Another server came out with us and apologized for his actions. Every now and then people have bad days, but as a host this guy was way out of line. My mother is 85 and didn't deserve to be treated like she was treated. Never going back, don't care if the food is five star or two. Customer is always right and give them accommodations not attitude. I hope his boss gives him some time on the dish line to think about his poor manners and attitude! I was generous with the two star rating. Mosaic for lunch... Seated right away. Has a good selection of seating with standard tables, high-tops, couched, and a bar scene area. The music was some type of acid rock which was odd and disconcerting, I'd tone it down. Service was prompt and friendly. We had the fried green tomato BLT (one with and without soup) and it was very good. Nice sauce, pumpkin soup side was interesting ( I'm not a fan, but reports from the table were positive). The "Fit" salad was also very good ... Moderately priced, good atmosphere (minus the inappropriate music), good service, above average food. Will be back. read more

This place is definitely one to bring out of town visitors or parents to, especially for brunch. They have an amazing mimosa flight with some really interesting flavors! My friend got it and we had so many people ask what it was and a good conversation starter for sure. We started with a sticky apple roll which was by far the highlight of the trip for me. It comes out hot in a cast iron pan and is so warm and gooey and delicious. Can't say enough about that thing!! Still having dreams about it. I got the veggie cast iron frittata and it was eh.... thought it lacked flavor but the portion was huge. Definitely saw some things I'd try the next time though. The hostess was rude. I had made reservations for 4 and at the very last minute my husband wanted to join us. They didn't answer the phone and I couldn't change the number of people on open table. She said I will seat you this time but next you need to update the reservation. Acted like she was doing me a huge favor to seat one more person. Everything was doused in garlic. I will say that the mimosa flight was very impressive. Food was average at best. Mosaic offers a good variety of food with generous portions and that comfort, low and slow flavor profile. While the food wasn't outstanding, I did come away satisfied and full, as the portions were generous and seasoned well. To start, we ordered the calamari and brussel sprout side. The calamari came out golden brown with banana peppers and a chipotle aioli. Unfortunately, the dish was a bit under salted and the aioli tasted too much like mayonnaise. The sprouts, on the other hand, were delicious and crispy. They were seasoned very well and had a light, yet rich flavor to them. I would highly recommend getting these as an appetizer. My entree, again, tasted good, but not amazing (especially for the price we paid). I ordered the Sriracha Honey fried chicken and Mac and cheese. The portion was generous, with about 3-4 panko breaded strips, Mac and cheese, and green beans. The fried chicken itself tasted a bit dry; the saltiness cut the sweetness of the sauce, which provided a great balance with the honey. The sauce however I found to be a bit too thick and bland. The spice didn't quite come through, leaving the place too heavy and sweet. Especially considering the how packed the plate was with the other sides, the sauce interfered with the mac and cheese and vegetables, leaving me a bit disappointed. The green beans again tasted really bland with not much seasoning at all, except for the honey chicken glaze. However, the Mac and cheese I did have tasted fantastic, with a rich sauce and really nice baked bread crumb topping. Would absolutely get this again if I come back. All in all, while some elements of the meal were really great, the pricing, and attention to detail fell a bit flat. With so many other restaurants in Richmond, I don't know if I'll come back. Mosaic has a nice outdoor seating area but the hostess seemed extremely upset when I asked to sit outside in spite of the outdoor seating being completely empty. There is a pandemic and I don't feel comfortable eating inside yet. She had a very rude and strangely aggressive tone. I've eaten outdoors there every week for the past six weeks. I mentioned that to the hostess when she declined to seat me. She said, "well not tonight!". I gave up and left. I won't be going back again. They've lost my business. read more

Made a reservation for brunch today after reviewing the menu online. What a disappointment! We started with the beignets. The waitress warned us they were not the traditional New Orleans-style and she wasn't kidding. They were heavy lumps of fried dough, smothered in powdered sugar. The only saving grace was the accompanying berry compote. Next we both chose variations of the eggs benedict, requesting "medium" poached eggs, white done, yolk soft. The only explanation for what arrived was that the cook must not have understood the term because all the eggs were nothing if not well-done. Not a suggestion of a soft yolk anywhere, partnered with a side of overcooked, dry breakfast potatoes. The icing on the cake was the OJ, made from concentrate. Who in this day and age of discriminating foodies would dare to serve canned juice!? The flavor was so off that my guest took one sip and set it aside. The two positive take-aways from the meal were the coffee and our lovely server. Not enough to encourage me to go back. read more

I lack true eloquence at the moment, but i will say that the brunch offerings are eminently satisfying, both for a sweet tooth and savory cravings. This was my first time visiting Mosaic. When I made the reservation, I added a comment that it was for a birthday. Most restaurants will say happy birthday when you check in. Not here. Service was very slow. It wasn't very busy, but it was a two hour dinner. We sat near the open kitchen. Management...please remind your staff that they should not have loud, personal conversations in an open kitchen. I heard more about their lives than I did the people I was with. We got two apps, the fried artichoke hearts and calamari both were good. I got the steak frites which was very good. The short ribs tasted like homemade pot roast (my mom makes better), but I go to a restaurant to eat dishes I can't make at home. The other dish we got was the siracha chicken and mac and cheese. I have no idea why the mac and cheese is so popular there was nothing special about it. The butter cake was good. Again...birthday celebration and the table next to ours got a little candle, but nothing in ours. All and all not really worth the price tag, but it is probably nice for lunch or brunch while shopping. read more

This was my first visit. A group of 8 for dinner. Great service, my reservation was ready when I got there, even though the place was full. Comments from the group-- all the food was really good, kids really liked the French fries, but my son thought his medium rare burger was well done. We had crab cakes, goat cheese salad, gnocchi, filet mignon, seafood parpadelle, and burgers with fries. Everything was great. I went here for dinner with a group of friends about a month ago. As with most farm to table restaurants, the food was good. It wasn't the most delicious meal I've had in Richmond. Our appetizer were the spring rolls (everyone loved these, there just weren't enough), caprese salad (very fresh and very good), and crispy artichokes. I like the artichokes...even though they looked like fried chicken. For an entree I got the summer squash tort...it was yummy, but very hard to eat. There was a lot of cheese. I was very disappointed with dessert. The nutella tiramisu was just not good. I can't pick one particular thing about it but it nothing seem to mesh well together. I'm a big dessert fan, and barely took 3 bites. The only good dessert at the table was the cookie. While I would go back for food, I would definitely go somewhere else for dessert. read more

From the second I sat down for dinner last night I was already disappointed. The wood chairs on the slippery tile floor move around like you were on ice. If you don't sit perfectly upright, you start to quickly slide in any directions making it very difficult to remain comfortable. Opposite the table was a VERY uncomfortable padded bench that both tables around us commented how bad they were and pillows were being passed around left and right trying to find something resembling normal. Before we ordered we noticed the music selection changed several times. One moment was Rusted Root, the next was some jazz, followed by some random 90's alternative. The elderly couple next too us looked slightly uncomfortable by the 90's alternative as I can assure you it wasn't Goo Goo Dolls. From the menu we ordered the Spicy Corn Dip with Corn Chips. This is the dish that upset me the most as it was served with Frito Lays. I was expecting some sort of house baked Corn Tortilla or something similar, not Fritos. Was this a mistake? Or was this one of those moments where they ran out of the right chips and bought Frito's in a pinch?? To make it worse, the chilled corn salad was NOT spicy in the slightest and tasted like Pimento Cheese with Corn in it. Very bland. My Mosaic Penne Pasta was decent. It reminded me of something I would get at Macaroni Grill because the sauce was slightly too thick. The big disappointment though was that the Sundried tomatoes were so scant they might as well have not existed as a part of this dish. The final straw though that made this a terrible dining experience was the inclusion of bacon in a the vegetable sides. When someone orders Salmon with a side of fresh vegetables they do not expect their to be meat of any sort in the vegetables, especially if not printed on the menu. To make matters worse, when we asked for it to be cooked again without the bacon we were told it was all already mixed in. I've been a chef for over 12 years... already mixed in means those vegetables were prepared at the beginning of the night and sit in a steam table and are scooped onto the plate. That's not fresh. At this point our waiter (who was incredibly cordial and understanding) offered to bring some sauteed zucchini. Unfortunately this too was prepared poorly, completely doused in salt and pepper and degrading the fresh natural flavor of zucchini. The manager offered us dessert and some free entree coupons but we declined both as the experience was so poor and disappointing that we've realized it's not worth wasting another night when Richmond is full of so many amazing restaurants just 5 minutes east. We will certainly not return, but hopefully this long time Richmond restaurant pulls it together and keeps their name in tact. read more

This is a review for their catering services only. Mosaic is effing amazing! I love them, they are fantastic, and I will use them for all my catering needs in the future...not that I ever have much of an occasion to cater things. Our coordinator was Crystal Lowery and she was super helpful, friendly and indulgent. The only thing she wasn't very good at was answering emails or phone calls. I may have set the precedent on that, because at first I answered slowly too, but it frequently took her a few days to answer messages or emails. Our plans changed SEVERAL times and she was responsive each time, never acted like it was an inconvenience or a pain in the ass that things kept changing. I never felt like the bill was being inflated or we were being over charged for anything. When we did the tasting the food was really great. Just a note, if you taste with them and then decide not to use them, it's 25$ per person for the tasting. They were really good about working with us to make a few of the food items vegan and they had a great selection of vegetarian and other special diet items. We didn't like a few things and they substituted them with equally tasty items. They also used a lot of organic, local ingredients and they were really into our request to use compost-able flatware instead of just the regular disposables. They didn't even charge us extra for them! At the wedding I kept getting compliments for the food. I feel like people usually talk about the dress and the decor, but we constantly got, "the food is amazing!" Plus, they packed up a special serving for the pastor and packed up all the leftovers so we could take them home. To sum. Use them for catering! Friendly staff, great coordinators, amazing food, beautiful presentation, reasonable prices. AMAZING! LOL, A++ Would buy again. read more

I have loved Mosaic for years and even more since it got its semi-recent makeover. Mosaic used to be a place where you'd order your food at a counter, sit, and a server would bring it to you. A little while ago, the owners spruced up the interior, giving it more room to sit, a bar and stylish new look, and changed it to a full-service restaurant. I like it better this way. In the past, waiting in line to order then searching for a table was a pain. Now, service is simple. I love stopping in for lunch and brunch. Although there are hearty dishes like burgers, I really appreciate that Mosaic has a lot of low-fat, low-calorie and low-carb dishes on the menu. It's nice to be able to go out to eat and know you're getting something healthy from a locally owned restaurant. I've tried the South Beach Caesar Salad with numerous soups. One in particular that stood out was a spicy peanut soup. I also tried the fit chicken saute, which featured ginger chicken, toasted sesame seeds, zucchini, roasted red peppers, garlic, onions, carrots, snow peas, walnuts and spinach for under 450 calories. It was light but delicious. I am absolutely in love with the turkey and smoked Gouda sandwich. When I initially ordered the combo of roasted turkey, smoked Gouda, mixed greens, tomatoes and raspberry-chipotle mayo on wheat bread, I asked for the mayo on the side because I wasn't sure about the flavors. It ended up to be a sweet-yet-spicy, perfectly spiced sauce. It made the sandwich and it's hard to imagine anything it wouldn't be good on. It was outstanding. Other favorites include the Aegian Chicken Pita with grilled chicken, olives, onions, feta, field greens, tomatoes and a Greek vinaigrette dressing and the white bean turkey chili. If you're not watching your waistline, Mosaic also has a great selection of big, freshly baked cookies. They are very indulgent and tasty. I haven't made it to the bar at night, but the bright colors and cheerful environment make it seem like a nice place to grab a drink. I'll definitely be heading back soon for lunch. read more

Food was delicious. My pasta was very interesting and didn't expect to get what I did. The noodles were very thick- width wise. Nonetheless it was good with a lot of flavor. My friends and I went for happy hour, which really wasn't happy hour at all, selection is limited and no food is apart of the happy hour. Their happy hour isn't all that great- only beers and wine a dollar cheaper (if I recall correctly). We ended up getting sangria (not included in happy hour) and were not disappointed with the decision. Overall food is great. read more

Yes. The dreaded one-star review. I am not playing. The catered lunch we received from Mosaic today was simply unacceptable. One of the vendors that my employer works with wanted to treat our office to lunch, and gave us free reign to choose whatever we wanted. The staff decided on Mosaic, which, from their menu at least, sounded fantastic. For the money that was spent, the quality of the food (and the presentation) was shockingly disappointing. The "elegant combination platter" of cold chicken nuggets, stale pita, mayo-heavy corn "dip" and dry-as-a-science textbook ham biscuits tasted off, and arrived spilled completely off of their serving platters, on their sides in a bag. A dessert plate intended to feed up to 12 people had four cookies and three chocolate truffles, none of which were even the desserts initially requested. The faces and sounds of dismay around the table this afternoon were, at least, comical. And that is the only good thing I have to say about the experience. In summation: Mosaic is one of those traditional, old-school Richmond places that rest on their laurels as something "nice", when in fact it is sub-par. I've had better food from a grocery store hot bar. Shame on you Mosaic. read more

I've visited and dined at Mosaic many times for lunch, brunch and dinner. The service has always been attentive, and the food has been consistently good. Wife and I dined on a recent Friday night without reservations. The wait was minimal (10 minutes or half a beer). The beer list was good w/lots of choice. The place was packed, and it was very loud. I ordered the Mahi special. the fish arrived hot, in a good sized portion, and very flavorful. It was a great piece of fish. The accompanying sides, jasmine rice and a black bean cake, were room temp. The waitress followed up and asked "how do you like your dinners?" and I let her know. She apologized and in short order the manager arrived to apologize and offer free dessert. As we're not dessert eaters, she offered an alternative of 20% off on the meal. That's how you run a restaurant. Things are seldom perfect, and when they aren't it's how you recover that counts. I'll go back because these folks know what they're doing, and they want my business. My guy brought me here when he found that it offered gluten free eats. We were floored when we got inside. It is absolutely beautiful! It was nice sitting on the love seats instead of chairs. The unique chandeliers were gorgeous, and the lighting was perfect for the event we went out to celebrate. I'd have to say my favorite thing about Mosaic though (besides the food!) was the staff. Everyone was friendly, and our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and what I could eat safely. He helped me choose a meal and made sure to note that it NEEDED to be GF so he could relay it to the chef. Anyone else with Celiac knows how nerve wracking it can be to go out to eat not knowing if you will feel sick afterwards. I had the Shrimp & Grits - unbelievable!!! I would like to review the food here, but my interaction with the hostess was so rude that my wife and I walked out before waiter service could begin. We walked in on a Saturday around noon, where the restaurant was mostly empty, including the hostess stand. After a brief wait, the hostess walked up and said "can I help you" in a tone that was very unfriendly and non-welcoming. Her body language gave off the impression that she thought we might try selling her time-shares in Florida. After letting her know that we would just like a table for two, she decided the best place to sit us in the completely open restaurant was at a table right next to the door and directly under a speaker blaring muzak. She quickly disappeared back to her hiding spot before we could ask to be moved elsewhere, so we ended up leaving. Thanks Mosiac for the rudest dining experience ever! read more

So, normally this is not an area of town that I stop to shop/eat in as I think that I am well below the socio-economic demographics they are catering to. When we pulled into the parking lot my hubby noted that this was a place for people who were afraid to go downtown and so they built a little "city center" near UR to feel safe. Hmmm, well put. But really, I am not going to dock them on points for that. We were there for a non-profit night, where 10% of your bill is donated to a particular non-profit so I've got to give them props right there for being at least a little bit involved in the community. They have outdoor seating, albeit overlooking a parking lot, but still probably not a bad place to have dinner on a spring evening. However, we were seated inside. Let me just say, and Richmond Restrauteurs, please take note, that I am so tired of being shown to a seat where I am close enough to the diners at the table next to me that I feel rude if I don't introduced myself and help them finish their dessert. C'mon. I know you want/need to pack in as many people as possible but when the waitress can't fit between the tables and I have to repeat everything twice maybe a line has been crossed. That being said, lets get to some of the good. The atmosphere is nice, modern but cozy. Their menu has a suprising amount of dishes featuring smoke gouda, but hey, if you've got a favorite product, by all means, flaunt it. But my favorite thing about their menu is the section of dishes under 450 calories. How wonderfully considerate! Hubby got the shrimp and grits (not from the 450 menu) and the grits were just about the creamiest I've ever had, but unfortunately in a way that lost the texture of the grits themselves. It was also extremely heavy. I got the salmon from the 450 menu - served with sundried tomatoes, olives, artichoke hearts, zucchini and spinach. Yum yum. See people, it is possible to make a delicious and healthy meal. All in all it was an okay experience. The food was fine, the service was fine, the atmosphere was fine, but honestly, its not someplace that I think I will ever get a craving for. read more

Sadly this is not the same Mosaic we used to love. Booked Mosaic for Mother's Day several weeks ago. Arrived today to a long line of fellow reservation holders waiting to even check in at the hostess stand. Not a good sign. I'll spare you all the frustrating details and just say the one hostess (there were two) seemed to give our table for 5 away thinking another (also frustrated) group was us. Her solution, a four top with a chair on the end blocking a walk way. Nope we'll wait for a proper table and also would like to speak to a manager. (It's now 30 mins past our reservation). Manager never showed and we were seated about 15 mins later (45 after res). Our server was aware of the wait and apologized and assured us things would improve. Nice touch and she did fine but no manager showed....ever. Food was overly priced, bland and took entirely too long to make. Rock shrimp app was heavily coated in batter and over fried. Think hard candy. Ordered two burgers ($17 each!!), a salad, eggs with bacon and home fries and I had the sriracha honey chicken over grits. Not sure what took so long? Kids liked the burgers -hope so for $17 each. The bacon w the eggs was almost raw and had to be sent back . The salad had rock hard beets and the pecans were soft/stale. My $16 chicken and grits was a skillet FULL of grits and two chicken nugget sized pieces of chicken. 75% of the grits remained after I had the few bites with chicken. It goes a long way when a manager recognizes a mistake or poor service. Never saw a manager. Hostesses were bussing tables (after the tables sat and those waiting complained). Our table didn't have utensils. Waited entirely too long to be seated with a reservation. Waited entirely too long for our food. Just a mess of an experience all around. We pointed out the salad issues, sadly my wife's Mother's Day meal that she didn't hardly touch, and the waitress said the chef was sorry. That's it. No manager and not even a consideration of let me remove it since she didn't eat it and this entire experience has been a mess for you. Worst dining experience in a long time. Asked if we could wait for a table and was told by a male host with an attitude would be at least an hour. Said we would go somewhere else but another hostess came to the rescue and asked us just to wait a few minutes and were seated. Food was amazing so glad it worked out. Then came home tonight and saw my reservation on open table was cancelled after we had arrived, so couldnt leave a review. Too bad because the food is worth the three hour trip. read more

Came here for dinner with the folks after a long drive up from Charlotte on a Sunday night, and I was impressed with the quality of the food and the service. My folks had arrived about ten minutes before my girlfriend and I did, so they were seated already. Beer selection was good, if a bit pricey - I ordered the COTU Chin Music (the official beer of the Richmond Flying Squirrels). We took a bit of time in ordering as we were catching up, so I cannot comment too much on the supposed slowness of the service, but the waitress we had was attentive, brought water (including hot water with lemon for my mom) and bread. Only knock against her was that she did not know the beer on tap as they had just changed the keg and had to go and check. Anyway, food-wise, we tried the spring rolls (Julie G posted a good photo of this appetizer, four rolls split into halves, so eight pieces total), and I ordered the scallop special. The three scallops were large, tender, and tasty, and the risotto was well flavored and filling. I quite enjoyed the sauces they had artistically put on the plate, and was overall very pleased with the meal size and quality. My girlfriend got the pita crab cake, and I tried a bite. The only downside there was that the sauce was a bit overpowering and a bit too spicy, but taste of the crab cake was good, and there was lots of meat. A few of my girlfriends and I try to meet up for lunch/dinner each month, at a different location. None of us had visit Mosaic so we were excited to give it a try. The "girls lunch out" atmosphere was exceptional. We made reservations and they were very accommodating for us 8 ladies. The food was delicious and filling, not too much but just enough. Mosaic will definitely go on the list as one of our favorites. read more
