I bought my Moscot Zolman frame online from their official website (www.moscot.com). It turns out the frame is made in China, as declared on one of the frame's temples. Moscot's very high prices are justified in the long-standing tradition of the family and that of their NY shop. They know this and their branding strategy thus also consists of flaunting with their heritage and tradition on their website. I had heard about Moscot from a few friends, so when I went to NYC I made a trip out to the Orchard street shop. I found the staff to be pretty friendly and not very pushy. I had seen a few styles online and asked to see those, and the guy that helped me also took time to pick out a few others that he thought I might like. I never felt pressured to buy anything and despite how busy and cramped it was in the showroom, the salesguy was very patient with me and waited while I agonized over which frame to take back to L.A. with me. I purchased a Moscot Original frame which was pretty inexpensive compared to designer frames I've purchased in the past. It's also cheaper to buy at the store than online. They carry their own frames and a few other funky designer frames. I finally filled my prescription this weekend, and have gotten a few compliments on my frames already. Cool shop, definitely worth checking out if you're looking for vintage style frames. read more

YES there is an element of celebrity/trend-fapping YES they are pricey & they don't take much in the way of insurance YES their frames are classics & stylishly so So what you've heard is true. Also to know: 1. their doctors are very good. i see dr. butler-- he is always patient and pleasant, and very thorough. if you value your vision, don't fuck around: treat your eyes with respect and trust them to a doctor worthy of the responsibility. 2. they offer many optional features for their already high-quality lenses. if you can afford them, they are great and can make for very crisp vision with lenses that reduce fishbowling, resist scratching, don't reflect much glare in photographs, are as light/thin as technologically possible for your Rx, and on and on. if you can't afford all the fancy features, it's ok, the base lenses are very good, too. bonus: good, solid hardcases. even the hinges on the cases are built well! 3. the support staff are also good-- the reception staff, the frame fitters, the lens people-- they all do a very good job, without being pushy or trying to upsell anything. start to finish, if you can afford Moscot service, you will be happy with Moscot service. 4 stars instead of 5 b/c they take fewer insurance plans than they used to, which of course puts them square out of the realm of possibility for even more people. read more

I initially went in just to see the doctor (who was fantastic) for a contact lens script, but after talking to an associate named Brett, I picked out frames that I'm absolutely in love with. Not only does Moscot have great frames, their service is outstanding. The first time I walked in, it was 5 minutes before closing but the staff was incredibly accommodating. Andrea, the clerk who helped me look at frames knew exactly what would fit my features best and he was extremely knowledgable about everything that was in stock. In addition to finding a great pair of frames, I was able to make an appointment for an eye exam even though I had stayed beyond the stores official closing hour. I couldn't be happier with the service and the products at Moscot. Some reviewers have complained about price but that was never an issue since they accept VSP. This is the worst optician I have ever been. Receptionist judged people by their covers, if you just wear randomly without any make up, they will treat you like some kid and their eyes show strong discrimination thinking "how can this dude buy our pricy glasses?" or "this customer knows nothing". LOL~ Come on, there are always some egomania who thought high of themselves---when they actually are just at the bottom of the retail chain. If you want to make an appointment with them, then you'll find out that their customer hotline and their website are just an ornaments. I decided my (senior) eyes deserved an upgrade from my current pair of eyeglasses to the best I could provide. Research and my photo background suggested Zeiss as the solution. I went to the lower east side Moscot to explore. Luke Stevens was my salesperson and he was a delight. He walked me thru (with his associates) a two tier eye exam which gave me great confidence that my new prescription would bring me enhanced clarity of vision. Luke was kind in dealing with my vanity in frame selection and with knowledge presented all the options. I am very pleased with my Moscot experience, and look forward to my new glasses. read more

I want to thank Dan C. of Moscot for replying to my post and offering to address the problem I described in my previous post. I'm sorry it's taken me so long to reply. I admit I just assumed that I would only be given the same information I was given when I brought the glasses back to Moscot the first week I had them. I was convinced I was given the wrong prescription. They assured me it was correct and told me about the "failure to adapt" policy. They explained they would take out the bifocal lenses and replace them with reading lenses. I already have a pair of $5 reading glasses from the dime store that work. My Moscot glasses cost $600 because I included the invisible line bifocals and photochromic lenses. I couldn't see the point in turning my $600 glasses into a pair of $5 glasses. So I threw them in the drawer and kept trying to "adapt". They've adapted to the drawer nicely. I'm wearing the $5 pair. Again, Moscot is a nice looking store with very nice people, I just couldn't advice buying bifocals there. read more

Oh Moscot, why couldn't this have worked out better? I 'really' wanted a pair of Moscot frames. I moved to NY not too long ago and I didn't discover Moscot until I was in Paris on vacation this past fall. While at a Paris optical shop, I inquired about a pair of glasses that happened to be Moscots. When the shop owner told me they were from NY I decided to wait and buy when I got home. In early Dec I went to the Orchard Street store and ordered a pair of Lemtosh frames. I was very excited. They told me the target pick up date would be Dec 23. I had my eye doctor fax over my prescription the following day. When I followed up a week later, Moscot said they didn't have it. I called my glasses shop and they said they sent it over that next day. Apparently they sent it to the 14th street store? They faxed it again on Dec 15 and I confirmed that day that Moscot had the prescription. Fast forward. It is now Jan 22 and no glasses. I've been wearing glasses for 35 years and I can't recall ever waiting more than 2 weeks to get a pair. What's up Moscot? Dec 23 Moscot called to tell me my glasses wouldn't be ready on time due to the holidays. OK...understand. They said they would likely be ready Dec 27. On Dec 27 the charade started. A couple more days became the mantra for several more weeks. I would call, or they would call me...twice a week...each time with Moscot telling me my glasses should be ready in just a few days. Each call would take 15 minutes for them to check and see what was going on. They were always very kind but each time they would come back with the same story. "We're really sorry but they're not ready. This is unusual and we hope to have them in a few days." After several of these calls I tried to cancel on the phone with a very nice woman. She asked the manager to call me. When the manager and I spoke she said the glasses should be ready on Thur, Jan 19 so please hold off the cancellation. I did, really hoping they would finally be in, but I had lost the passion. It shouldn't be this hard to get a pair of glasses and it shouldn't take this long. On the 19th I received a call from an apologetic gentleman telling me the glasses weren't ready. Apparently the lenses didn't pass inspection yet again. I called back and talked to the manager and cancelled. It was a bummer for me and for them but a little ridiculous too. I went to James Leonard yesterday and bought a pair of Cutler & Gross and I'm very happy. PS - As a customer service recommendation, I would've given someone like me a gift certificate (or something) to the store to hopefully bring me back in and not lose a customer. Quick update - ordered my glasses from James Leonard on Sunday, Jan 22 and I just picked them up yesterday, Jan 27. What a difference read more

After going to the Moscot store twice in the past 6 years because of the Vision Service Plan Discount, I decided never again, even with the discount. I hate doing business with a company who makes me feel like they're doing me the favor. And when I spent $800.00 on eyeglasses and lenses and had to fight with the manager to get them replaced because they were unwearable, and then after getting them replaced, having them never really be that good, well, that is not worth a return visit. I believe after being a retail manager myself for years, that the customer experience and satisfaction is the most important thing in building a brand. In my opinion, that is NOT the Moscot philosophy. I would take a pass on this place. At least the 14th St. store. read more

I just picked up my new glasses from Moscot and am very pleased with them. I have bad eyesight but they got me the thinnest lenses and they have a very nice selection of frames. They didn't pressure me on anything. The salespeople as well as my eye examiner (Jen, who is not only great at her craft but also gorgeous) were all top notch. I cannot say that this place is inexpensive, however. I have VSP insurance and still ended up paying $300 for my glasses. However I got the thinnest lenses as well as the anti glare coating which amounted to about half that total. I never ever wore my old glasses but am really happy I actually have an alternative to my contacts now! I also went to the 14th St. location which was fine but I prefer the LES one. Check this place out if you need glasses. They are one of the few good places that take VSP insurance. read more

MUST READ! The Most Tardy, Expensive location to get Prescribed Glasses. Very Pleasant Sales People, Very Experienced, large selection, Historic location. THAT'S IT! If your there to browse, GREAT. Ask only price of frames and answer only "just browsing". They're a Hugely overpriced optical. The Cohen's across the street is almost as bad. If you have insurance or a voucher forget it. That won't merely be enough to get the same value as anywhere else. They really cater to upscale. While there, check out the celebrity post that have visited. Then ask yourself, "How much will this cost me?" This place has great customer service, attention to detail and selection. But in the end what you want is Value; The best price you can get for a great pair of glasses, right? That includes a fair price for an eye exam. But maybe I should run it down for you. As a person that grew up on the Lower East Side, this place has been an institution. I always admired Orchard St, Katz' Deli, and Moscot Optical. Once you enter, you will find the selection is awesome but the prices are to inflated. My suggestion, see all frame models you like, then compare their costs online or elsewhere. But let's assume you buy the slightly over priced frames there or you bring your own. Be prepared for what comes next because unless you think you could have your name on that "Celebrity Board", most likely you won't be out saying "Now that was a great deal!". NO ONE WILL; but that's just my opinion. Let me further detail. If your there for an exam, prepare to wait & pay BIG later! Then you'll hear: "Please fill out our "Friendly Card" with all your personal info." That will be the first hook. While your there, ask for a copy of your new prescription. Will the answer be... "What do you want that for" or perhaps "Are you going to use it to order somewhere else?" Hmmm. You will be then be escorted to a sales person. Now get ready to be "milked". Assuming you've selected (or brought) a set of frames, You'll now hear all the appealing stuff you can get with your new lenses. (Features that are sometimes standard at most other places.) If you buy from them, they may measure your face for the right size frame. ($$$ Milk Money, Nice Touch). Like clothing you wear, everything has a size. Try this, ask them to give you your measurement; Souldn't you know? "Oh are you going to buy from us?..." OK, let that one go. Now then, listen to all the appealing features your glasses will get. So far everything seems lovely, the service and attention to detail is awesome. Your ready to provide a 5 star review. Ask then, "How much for all this?" You will see a pencil scribbling or a calculator taking in all the lovely discounts. WHAM, POW, PING!!! THE TURKEY IS DONE. Unless, you're prepared to spend at the VERY LEAST $500, you shouldn't feel bad. If not, get ready to start squirming and haggling. Be prepared to settle for less and possibly leave a down payment. You've enamored, teased now BROKE. Once you've settled on a financial payment, you will be told... " it will take "X" amount of time because they have to be specially made; "We'll call you." Here is another thing you want to run by them.: "I know you pride yourself on quality and service, what do I get back for every day they are late?" Oh I love it when I last said that. Why, because suddenly no one is responsible. Get it all in writing. Why?, because the very last frames I got there were incorrect & 25 days late. Not bad in comparison to other reviews! OK I have done enough bashing. Go get your glasses there now. Help support the business. But be honest with your experience. After you've received the glasses, write a response here. Say it was nothing like that. WHAT MODEL DID YOU GET? Features, Price and time. WHERE ELSE DID YOU GO? Unless you make over 85K (at the very least) or work related to the owners; Your wallet won't be very happy. I have made the mistake of returning on 5 separate occasions over apx 30 years. Mostly due to filling the "Friendly Card" and getting a call every now & then (plus the lure of its location proximity). It comes down to this; You want quality and value. Get a free or inexpensive eye exam from anywhere else; Get a copy of your results, have your face measurements made for eye were and/or bring in YOUR frames in with Dr.'s prescription; Then maybe you'll have the money &patience to deal with what they'll say. You can get many prescription frames on line or buy from a private business. Try a shop that can give you your face measurements. Good Luck. FYI With your prescription, go online and Google: "Lens Replacement". (Many sites also offer Fashion frames; Try Ebay & Amazon also.) Have your prescribed lenses made here. At the very least, compare cost of Moscot frames with other on-line web sites (including optical shops in your area). Then have them done wherever best meets you need. read more

I was looking for a new sturdier pair of glasses and was hoping for something oversized initially. I showed a picture of the ones I liked on someone else at the store. I was helped out by Justin who was amazing! Not only was he honest with me about how if I went that oversized, I would not be happy as larger frames like that can lead to distortion. He also helped me find frames that were slightly dramatic but also matched my slender face and coloring. We ended up settling on the classic Lemtosh frame in brown for me. He helped me pick out the best lenses for my eyes and ordered everything for me quickly and on the spot there. I see Dr. Kwon at this location. I really like her. She's friendly, approachable, and always tries to clearly explain things to me. I was grateful that after seeing me a second time, she recommended some further tests because she thought one of my optic nerves was too large and might be a sign of something else. Turns out that it wasn't bad, but I was glad that my doctor was interested in PREVENTION. I've also bought glasses here and, although I find the selection lacking, the staff is very helpful, polite, and friendly. read more

I own a frame of theirs and was happy with it first...then i started thinking: They act like an old traditional NYC family store and people pay the high prices to support them. I did too, until i realized that the frames are made in China which made me feel deceived. I would have rather given my money to a eye glass maker like Warby Parker, which sells good looking, all US made frames for much less money... update after 2 years: so i broke the hinge of my glasses because i sat on them. bringing them into the store i was told that they are not able to repair them and that i should buy a new pair... i decided to try my luck at an optician in Brooklyn and he fixed it for $20 read more

My brother was in town, and broke his frames. We scoured a whole list of frame shops in NYC. My brother is super picky, and has a big head! We must have hit up at least a dozen places, until coming across Moscot. When you first enter their L.E.S. store, it appears to be a fancy showroom, with only a few pairs of glasses on display. We were directed to check upstairs, which was a completely opposite, bustling mom and pop atmosphere. My brother instantly found a pair of frames that he loved, and fit his big ol' head great. They had his new glasses ready for him, and custom fit to his head, within 30 min! Moscot is a family business that started with a pushcart, with their great grandfather in the Lower East Side. As far as eyecare and eyewear go, things could have been MUCH worse - trust me. After having shopped around online and in person for Optometrists in NYC, I settled on MOSCOT, mainly on the strength of their presentation via their website. It's clean, with a nice listing of the various styles of frames they offer, and the services they provide. By all counts, they appear to have a strong rep as reported by other Yelpers and folks in general (they also supposedly have a few celebrity customers, which they don't hesitate to remind you via their displays and the large whiteboard of names at the front of the store). Personally, I was interested in going to a "Mom-and-Pop" -type of place that was decidedly not a chain of stores because I wanted to be treated like a valued customer and not as a "sale" (oh, and the fact that their eyewear is decidedly "classic" - I was looking for a pair of horn-rimmed frames - was why I really went with them to begin with), so I could care less if somebody like Johnny Depp wears a certain frame, or they have a frame named after Justin Theroux. That said, allow me to briefly break down below my experience into what I believe to be the essential categories for someone on the hunt for new glasses/contacts: Selection At least at Orchard Street, the choice of frames was fine; I was able to find with no problem a pair of frames in the horn-rimmed style I craved. Their "Moscot Originals" and "Moscot Spirit" lines more than covered the style, so I was impressed (I did do a bunch of "research" online beforehand, so I knew the general style I liked vis a vis what they actually offered in the store, and avoided the "deer-in-headlights" paralysis that often makes an unsure shopper easy prey for a salesperson trying to ring up another sale - satisfaction be damned. This, plus wearing a MOSCOT frame ensures that you'll be sporting a unique permutation of what is currently a very popular style (so-called geek, Clark Kent, etc.), which is important to rugged individualists like me in a city like NYC, if only to avoid following the (massive) crowd - trendy as it may be. Price Let it be known: MOSCOT isn't cheap. There's a reason why they cater to so many celebrities and the like: because those folks can easily afford to drop a few bills on the merchandise and not blink. If you've got budgetary constraints, however, the cost may be prohibitive - especially if you're trying to go through your insurance. I paid for everything out-of-pocket, which apparently saved me $71 on my frames (for some strange reason, having coverage allows them to charge you a higher price for frames, which is crazy). I also got contacts, which rang up the bill considerably, as I wear RGP lenses (i.e. hard - I have an astigmatism), and are apparently less common than soft lenses, so they are able to charge you much more for a special eye exam. But whatever; one can't put a price on one's health - can one? Service Here's where the wheels came off the tracks for them - especially if you consider the price vs. selection to be a wash up to this point. I initially went on a Sunday in the early afternoon, and was seen pretty quickly for a pre-scheduled RGP exam by Dr. Kwon (call ahead, folks!). She certainly was professional enough, but not outstanding - she just did her job. Fine. The contacts I got from them work great, and supposedly I'm to have a follow-up exam in a few weeks to make sure everything is OK. Great. Now, when I went to purchase frames, I worked with a guy named Frank, who, for all of his supererogatory gregariousness and surface professionalism really gave off a "salesman" vibe that was a tad irksome. First off, the store is small and compact, so every little bit of space counts. And let me tell you: it was quite packed in there, and rather chaotic. My man Frank was juggling me and 2 other people simultaneously, and the other 3 salespeople had customers, also. As I said, I knew what I wanted, so I basically fitted myself based on the selection and what I wanted - a distracted Frank be damned. Finally, when it came time for me to put in the order, I had to get Frank's attention once again and have him bump one of the guys he was working with in order to finish up with me. Of course, Frank didn't know how to order the RGPs at first via the computer (they don't often get many customers that swing that way, I guess), but he finally got it right. And, as I said, my contacts are great. My glasses, however, are a different story. I've had to have one of the lenses replaced TWICE (still waiting on the replacement) because of mysterious scratches on the surface of the lens. Mind you, these lenses are "The Best", as Frank said it - Polycarb Crizal lenses with anti-scratch and -glare. Short story long, as soon as they get it right with the lenses, I'm out - will still use MOSCOT, as I like the overall quality and feel, but will try 14th Street . . . maybe you should too. read more

Cool glasses style, but not the best quality. You have to wait a long time to see the eye doctor (was there for about an hour) and they gave me bum trial lenses. They also have a very limited variety of trial lenses in stock so it takes weeks to get them. Worth buying your frames here and then going to Lens Crafters to get a perscription. read more

PRO: If you like vintage frames, Moscot has a good selection on classic styles and unlike real vintage frames, you can get them in different sizes and colors. CON: They have the worst florescently lit showroom/office for you to try on the glasses. I haven't used the optical services, I just shopped for frames there. read more

Came here based on a recommendation from a good friend of mine. He swears by Moscot, so I thought I should give it a try. I have never been happier! I came in for both an eye exam ($120) and for glasses ($325). Dr. Butler is very nice and he knows what he is doing. He informed me of things that my insured optometrist never told me about. The staff is very friendly and patient. I had to try have tried on at least 10 different pairs of glasses. They helped me narrow down my choices and were honest when I asked them how the glasses looked on me. I came out with a pair of Arthur frames from the Moscot Spirt collection. I am super happy with them. Moscot is pricey, but it is seriously worth it. read more
