Happened upon this place on the way to a family dinner down the block. My husband and I are fond of Russian/Ukrainian/Polish dumplings, so I wanted to see if they had frozen dumplings. They did, so decided to come back after dinner (they were open pretty late for a small family-run shop on Labor Day, 8 pm). Picked up frozen chicken dumplings and two pieces of cake. One was a slab of the honey cake and one was a chocolate ganache covered cake. I thought the taste of the honey cake was really good but I found the texture to be a bit gluey. My husband loved it so it's all his. I LOVED the chocolate cake. So much so I fought my husband over what was left. And both cakes cost $8.80 all together! That's incredible, at any fancy bakery the chocolate cake alone would have been $12-15. We'll definitely be back for cake, hopefully the dumplings are good and we'll be back for them too. Oh and the folks working there were very friendly, including what seemed like a grandmother and granddaughter. read more

Funny thing is, I googled Russian deli near me and this deli is the closest to me; from Eastchester, so I drove from Eastchester . They sell traditional Russian items and pastries. It's a small deli ; was a older lady working there , she was nice and helpful. The deli is small, can't dine in or out. It's a mom and pop store. Parking was hard to find because construction everywhere and a busy street . Will go back in the future. read more

Nice to have a store for Russian food in Manhattan and not have to go to Brooklyn or drive to NJ. This place is tiny so don't expect something like Baza (Net Cost Market). Nonetheless, they have the staples. Meat, fish, caviar, desserts, chocolates, prepared foods. I came here specifically for blini (Russian crepes). I hate to do this. I do. But the last few orders left much to be desired. There were missed items, there was disregard of special requests, and there have been no calls to clarify potential questions. The invoices are unclear - just a printout of your order with vague markings. There are no weigh-ins on the deli sent - I have no idea if it's 0.8 lbs or 1.2 lbs. unless I weigh myself, which is a hassle. Before, they used to call to make sure they got it right. Not anymore. This has been my last delivery order, I'm afraid. If I care to purchase from them again, I'll likely go there. But, frankly, I'm far more likely to take my car from the garage and schlepp over to Fort Lee, Staten Island or Brighton. A shame. They used to be very convenient for Manhattanites. They're ok as far as the product itself goes. But I do not recommend delivery. Not anymore, anyway - and I gave them the benefit of the doubt for the last 3 orders. EDIT: Just noticed they charged me $8.99 for bacon that weighed in below 0.7 lbs (same price adverized on website for 1.5 lbs piece) AND they removed the "best before" part of the sticker. Judging by the lot number compared to same item from other store, a much later lot is best before 2/20/16. So safe to guess it's best before tomorrow (if not yet expired). Disgusting. read more

Don't be fooled by Moscow on the Hudson's size. The tiny Store That Could packs in all of The Motherland's essentials. My personal shopping list usually includes: 1) sushki (donut-like tea cookies), 2) "Sherbet" (halva-esque hardened, sticky, dense paste with nuts and raisins), 3) Borodinsky (black) bread, 4) "Rossiski" cheese, 5) pork loin salami, 6) beef/lamb pelmeni (dumplings), 7) beef blitzes (crepes), 8) pecan baklava, 9) Viola cheese spread and, last but not least, 10) Korovki (caramel) candies. MotH has phenomenal cheese, salami and fish selections. Its tightly-packed shelves also offer a large variety of honeys, jams, grains, juices, cakes and chocolate. (Additional note: My parents are huge fans of their Kefir and pickles (ingested separately, mehopes).) And if you're feeling overwhelmed by all of the choices, just ask the jovial lady behind the counter for a suggestion. She's always happy to help. read more

This place is so cool and random. A little deli completely devoted to Russian food, snacks and kitch in Washington Heights? Sure, why not! I travelled to Russia a few years ago and had... Mixed reviews. The food sure was interesting (they love dill!) and the accommodations... Strange. I randomly stopped by the other day for a pastry and ended up with a huge cookie (see photo). This thing is crunchy on the outside, yet soft on the inside. It's studded with nuts and sandwiched between the two layers is a creamy mousse of unknown flavor. It took me about two days to finish and landed me in a sugar coma. Will I return? Well I'm moving, so probably not. read more

This is such a cute cozy ethnic grocery store. I went in and discovered all kinds of Russian desserts, cookies, chocolates, herring, cheese, milk and almost everything you could think of as Russian. We sampled their kielbasa, cheese, pickles and pickled tomato and they are delicious! The kielbasa is smoky and dense. I also bought some of the chocolate truffles and they are inexpensive and very good. Would like to come back and try their cakes and pastries! read more

Online store selection is amazing, unfortunately the actual store front is very tiny smaller than most NY smoke shops and sells mostly deli meats. Limited selection of any kind of foods. This store is the best grocery store in all of Manhattan!!! I have been shopping here for a very long time now and am so happy to have found Moscow on the Hudson. Shopping here is always a treat the Russian food is authentic always fresh and so yummy, the cakes are so amazing and just too yummy!!!! I don't know how they found such great bakers but I am always so amazed by the cakes. The staff there has always been nothing but nice and so professional to me and my family whether we shop online and get home delivery or go into the store. If you're thinking about coming here, or ordering from here, consider instead taking the R train to Queens. Its confusing to me how anyone could screw up Russian staples the way that this place did. I placed an order for some of my favorite items for delivery (pickled cabbage, pickles, vinaigrette salad, Israeli salad, Russian cheese, Russian salami for hubby and some napoleon cake). They don't really give you a delivery time frame, so delivery could be anywhere between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. The delivery guy could not find my office building (I'm in Metlife building. I don't know if it could get any easier) and I spent about 30 minutes on the phone with him (at 9 p.m.!) and the management trying to coordinate me running out of the building in the cold to retrieve my order. I quickly got over that fiasco once my food order arrived packaged quite nicely. The food was bad. The pickled cabbage was inedible. It smelled like garbage, and tastes even worse. I have had pickled cabbage from various stores in Brooklyn and Queens, and never have I ever tasted anything as egregiously disgusting as this. Their vinaigrette had beets, potatoes, kidney beans (?!?) and peas (?!!?) in it and barely anything else. WHY deviate from a classic recipe?!? I don't get it. The "Israeli" salad was not an Israeli salad at all. I would have known that their version was different if they had an image of it on their website as they do most other items, but no, no luck there. I got some sort of eggplant mush and it tastes like mushed eggplant with mayonnaise... All in all, I think their food is either made VERY wrong and/or just really old and near rotten. The pickles were half sour and not good either. Their one saving grace was their Napoleon. It's pretty tasty, hence the 3 stars. I only went here because I thought Food Palace had closed (they didn't; they just found a bigger location) and I really needed jam. I can only assume this place stays in business thanks to people who aren't willing to walk the extra 6-7 blocks to Food Palace. It's so tiny, you can hardly walk in the door without knocking something over and then good luck finding what it is you want. This small shop has everything you could possibly want plus the staff is remarkably friendly and knowledgeable. Amazingly, there is no pressure or sales pitch. They know they stock the best and their products speak for themselves. The kielbasa here is actually better than any other place we've purchased it within a 100 mile radius. But I have to admit when it comes to desserts and chocolates you can't beat this place for selections, service or price. The Belgium cookie tins are amazing as are the selections of Russian chocolate boxes and the chocolate stocking stuffers are too much fun to pass up. I recently visited a friend in NY and was telling him about Russian food. He's not Russian but was interested in trying something new. We decided to pick up a few items at Moscow On The Hudson for a picnic-style lunch. The weather was gorgeous and I wanted to enjoy a lunch in the park. We got two varieties of Russian kolbasa, cheese, salad olivier (because how can you not!?!) and a few brined cucumbers. I love the home-made salted variety - not the vinegar pickled ones from the jar. I also grabbed a bottle of kvass so that my friend can try what I call the Russian version of virgin beer :) Our picnic was delicious and we totally lucked out with the weather. I loved this little store and the fact that we can get everything we needed right in the city and didn't have to schlep to Brighton. Totally recommend this deli to the locals and will definitely be back on my next trip! read more

I recently moved to Manhattan and have been looking for a place where I can pick up some Russian comfort food. Having lived in Los Angeles for many years, I was used to having access to Russian stores all around town. In New York however it's a different story. You can't just hop in your car, drive five minutes and stock up on blinchiki with meat, kotleti, and some olivier. Well, I guess you can if you live near Brighton. I found this little place on Yelp and decided to give them a try. First impression is that it's definitely way smaller than the stores I'm used to. They have all the basics that I was looking for though. Most of the familiar salads, freshly prepared deli food and a nice selection of cheeses. I also picked up some staples like buckwheat (love that kasha!), spices for borscht, and my favorite summer drink - kvass. read more

I cannot believe all these good reviews. Either these people are friends of the owner, didn't stumble upon the horrendous "customer service", or simply never had good Russian food. I tried giving this place several chances. I do have to say from what it looks like, it is clean. That's about the only good thing going for it. I tried their pastry - not fresh and have obviously been sitting there for a while. One commentator said their Napoleon was good. Are you kidding me!? Not in a million years! I would much rather take the long trek to, even, Brighton Beach, go into the first Russian deli, and I guarantee you their stuff will be 100 times better! And cheaper! Speaking of the price; I realize being the only Russian place they have a monopoly and obviously no sense of shame. Some of their products are twice as much as you can get across the bridge. It is just mind-boggling! But let me get to the good part. The customer service. I have had the pleasure of dealing with 4 people there, 2 of which left me so angry that I just had to write this review. There is a young dark haired man who is so rude he shouldn't even be near anywhere that caters to others. No pleasantries, just barking out answers and your total, while he speaks Russian to his coworker when you try to address him. Sorry, I am bothering you with my business. The older woman (who looks like she can be his mother) really takes the cake. I once walked in on a very quiet evening, the doors were open mind you, and she greets me with a death stare. I asked if they are closing, and she honest to god, throws her hands in the air, lets out a groan, and practically yells at me that she won't be serving me anything out of the display case if I need it nor will she cut anything for me either. (Neither of which I needed, but that is neither here nor there). I was so taken back that I simply walked out, and vowed never to return. Drove from CT to stock up on fresh home made Russian food on a Saturday morning. They had a poor selection of salads and no cooked foods. They didn't even have basic olivya salad. If they reorganized their canned goods section and moved some more stuff to the right of the store they could make room for more fresh Russian food. They had a good selection of meats and cheeses but there's more to Russian food then that! I was disappointed. I got kielbasa under a pound and half a pound of cheese overpriced for total of fifteen bucks. While the store is small and the options are limited, it has a lot of the staples of Russian food (like different grains, Russian dumplings, honeybread, kefir, and a good selection of meats). I just telephoned Moscow on the Hudson to see what brands of Kvass they seel. Before I could ask if they sold All Stars bakery wheat kvass -- they rudel hung up the telephone on me!! I called back several times and each time they answered the telephone without saying one word they hung the phone again, and again, and again! Lovely jewel of ethnic groceries. I come here quite a bit for the varieties of frozen Russian pelmeni (meat filled tortellini-like dumplings). They also have a case of pastries and cakes that are quite good, even if the shop and case itself has seen better days. Go for it. read more

This is my favorite little Russian store. I live in the neighborhood and I'm Russian so through the years I've tried everything they've got on sale. My favorites are: in the meat department - the Jewish Beef Salami, from pastries - apple custard pie and honey cake, from the dairy fridge - organic lowfat kefir, from the fish selection - smoked by the pound, skin on. The selection is truly huge and the shelves are bursting with stuff. There a lively sidewalk scene there in the summer with jogers and bikers taking breaks by the Starbucks on the corner, families with babies, etc. read more
