I ordered this pulled pork sandwich for $15.00 at Taste of Beaufort. It was horrible. Very disappointed. Doesn't look like pulled pork.

In May, I ordered a $15.00 pulled pork sandwich at the Taste of Beaufort festival. It was AWFUL. It tasted awful and looked like chopped up/leftover Thanksgiving ham. I was very disappointed and cannot believe you'd serve that & claim it was pulled pork and have the nerve to charge $15.00 for something inedible.

However, Smokehouse at Paris Avenue is much more what you expect in a BBQ place than the upscale feel of Roadhouse. We went on a Friday night and they were fairly busy, especially with take-out. The dining room is small, and it is a counter-serve establishment, but the folks working were so friendly. One in my party was a little perturbed that we had to wait a while for our food, but the portions were large, filling, and delicious. I was curious to learn about the history of the space itself. We will be back! So good.

My mom said her oysters were really good & I did try the okra and it was delicious. My brisket was good, very juicy, tender & tasty. My red rice was some of the best I've EVER had as well as the cabbage. Another reviewer said the cabbage was overcooked and that's his opinion but in my opinion that's how southern cooked cabbage should be. I tried my mom's mac & cheese and that was also some of the best I've ever had. The next day I went back to get a to go order to take home to Summerville for my family. I ordered the brisket, ribs, red rice, mac & cheese, cabbage & coleslaw. Unfortunately my coleslaw wasn't in the bag when I got home. Their ribs are really good too, the only thing that I didn't like is that the silver skin was left on. Most places I get ribs from the silver skin is removed. All of the sides were delicious! I actually like their sides more than the bbq. Bbq is good but the sides are delicious!!

It doesn't feel corporate or manufactured at all. More like you've stumbled into somebody's lovingly chaotic backyard dinner party where the food just happens to be genuinely top-tier. The mismatched charm, handwritten feel, and warm atmosphere are part of what makes it so special. There's this brilliant contrast between the laid-back hole-in-the-wall vibe and the seriously refined cooking coming out of the kitchen. We started with the fried green tomatoes which were incredibly tender, fried perfectly, and drizzled with a lovely house-made ranch. The sweet house pickles alongside were such a good touch. We also each had a cup of she crab soup which was beautifully seasoned and packed with tonnes of crab morsels. For mains, we shared the shrimp and grits and completely understood why the recipe has won awards, including being recognised as the 3rd best in the world. The recipe is rooted in traditional Lowcountry cooking but elevated with layers of flavour that somehow still feel comforting and homemade. The grits were unbelievably creamy, and the shrimp and sausage were perfectly cooked with fantastic flavour throughout. We also split the seafood purloo with blackened grouper, and it was equally impressive. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted incredibly fresh without trying too hard to be fancy. What really made the experience though was the staff. Everyone went above and beyond. They took time to chat with us about the area, paced the courses perfectly so nothing felt rushed, and by the end we were leaving with handshakes feeling more like guests than customers. Places like this are getting harder to find. We'll absolutely be back and would recommend it to anyone looking for authentic Lowcountry food served by genuinely wonderful people.

That should've been my first sign the rest of the meal would go downhill. My son's chicken tenders came out burned and black. My seafood boil wasn't much better, the potatoes were completely uncooked, hard as a rock. For the wait and the price, we expected so much more.

It was pleasantly quiet when we arrived, but it filled up quickly as the evening went on -- a good sign. The food here is genuinely delicious and, best of all, reasonably priced for downtown Charleston. We shared a plate that came with pulled pork and smoked chicken wings, along with coleslaw and sweet potato fries. We also started with the smoked rib and charred corn empanadas as an appetizer. Everything was outstanding -- the meats were tender, smoky, and well-seasoned without being overdone. Their coleslaw is my favorite among the options; it's creamy with just a hint of heat that keeps it interesting. The sweet potato fries were a nice touch too. We had our eye on the pork belly burnt ends, but they were sold out that night -- understandable for a popular item. My only real nitpick is that they don't offer brisket, but with everything else tasting so good, it's hard to complain much. Our waitress, Brady, was fantastic -- friendly, attentive, and really helpful with recommendations. Service like that makes a big difference. If you're in the mood for quality smoked BBQ without the tourist-trap markup, Poogan's Smokehouse is a great choice. We'll definitely be back next time we're in town. Highly recommended!

My ribs were cooked so much that the bones were actually breaking in half when I picked up a rib. So when I went to eat one the cartilage was coming off with the meat and then I had to fish it out with my fingers. I get that ribs are eaten with your fingers I just didn't like having to fish out the stuff that wasn't meat. My nephew had shrimp and grits, and they were very tasty but they apparently leave the tails on the shrimp and I know a lot of places do that for the aesthetic but actually it just makes it harder to eat. You can't get a spoonful of shrimp AND grits without having to take the tail off first. So then your hands are covered in the gravy and maybe some ppl like it that way, we don't. My husband will eat the tails but he's the only person I've ever known to do that. Our waitress was very pleasant, I wish I could remember her name but it's been a couple of months. Their green beans were outstanding!! They were roasted and I throughly enjoyed them. I would go back again and probably try the pulled pork so I don't have to worry about the bones & cartilage of the ribs. They also didn't take the silver skin off, I prefer it off but maybe some ppl like it that way. Also they corn muffins that came with our meals were burnt on the bottom. The tops tasted good but the bottoms were definitely burnt.
