So I came in to check out a bike they were selling, after seeing an ad on craigslist. Someone asked if I needed help so I told him the bike I was interested in and asked if he could tell me more of the bike. I forget the name of the employee (short, bald, stocky man) but he seemed like he had better things to do than help me out. After reluctantly answering some of my questions, he got offended when I mentioned the condition of the bike, then turned his back on me (in the middle of a conversation) and continued on with his shop duties. I immediately thanked him for his time and walked out (which was a shame because I was genuinely considering the bike). I feel that is no way to treat a customer, I think a business that sells and repairs motorcycles should understand that by now. I will certainly not be returning here. They do seem to have a nice selection of bikes for sale though. And the cafe next door is super friendly. read more

I explained my conundrum and with a very reassuring attitude, he asked me about 20 questions, stopping to explore my answers and commenting on whether or not a Bonneville would be a good choice for me. In the end, he told me to just sit on the Bonneville and see how it felt... Immediately I noticed that it was quite different from the one in my MSF course (a Kawasaki Eliminator). He told me how the riding stance was different and how to deal with the foot pegs that seemed to be in the way of everything... I was there about 1 hour, and in that hour I learned more about the practical side of riding a motorcycle than I had read from my entire search on the web. I decided to purchase the Bonneville, and as he had some helmets (which are lower cost and all black, but quite safe) I tried one on and decided to purchase it (he made me wear it for like 15 minutes to make sure it still felt ok after some time). Today I went back to pick up the bike around 3pm, I was terrified of actually driving on the road with a bike that had 5 times more HP than my MSF training bike. He had me sign three papers and completed the rest of the DMV paperwork himself, then gave me a paper registration. I then got a complete orientation to the Bonneville and was able to ask some of the strange questions I had lingering from my class (counter steering). He answered every question in a manner I could understand. He even offered information about clothing and attire, showing me the suits that the uses to ride. I was given the keys and told to try out the clutch and get the feel of the bike - then ride over to the ballpark and practice. He made a special point to let me know that if I was not comfortable riding the bike today that I could leave it there until a later date. There was no pressure... After about 30 minutes, I got up the courage to ride away and all went well! I know the reviews are a little confusing, because there are actually 2 distinct shops here: the motorcycle shop itself, and the adjacent cafe. While I feel an affinity with the bikers and their quest for the perfect, winding mountain road in the middle of nowhere, I'm not so down with the instant death thing, so I'll settle for lunch like the milquetoast programmer I am. First let me emphasize that the cafe is very much in its own room; you don't have to worry about the smell of oil and tires messing with your lunch. And it's a pretty cozy room at that, with a couch and coffee table, and people's dogs wandering around. Once I got my food, it suddenly became clear why there's a cafe here at all--because these guys seriously know their coffee and sandwiches. I had the Stephen, which is a delicious ciabatta with hot turkey, veggies, and cheese, and washed it down with a cafe au lait. The perfect lunch, really. With so many lackluster lunch options in these parts, it's kind of funny that a bike shop's little side venture manages to leave the competition in the dust. But I'm not complaining--Motojava would be a fine addition to any neighborhood, and at 9th and Bryant? Godsend. I bough my second bike here. They had a posting on craigslist for a 2007 Yamaha Vstar 1100. The bike was almost brand new at 1500 miles. It had custom pipes and swapped out the frumpy seat for something more sleek and sexy.I instantly fell in love. Enough about my bike, the review of this place is what you came for. The shop is small but, I feel that's the charm of the place. It feels like each bike in there was hand picked by the owners who take pride in their work and their customer service. They answered every question I had and were authentically nice and friendly through the entire process. I also love the fact that I felt like I was buying my bike from "experienced motorcycle enthusiast" opposed to some turd-polishing salesmen. If you're looking for a quality used bike from guys you can actually trust, if MotoJava has the bike you're looking for, you'd be a dummy to not pick it up from them. I should probably try their java portion of their store one day, but this review is for the moto side. Best of the best. Those are my words about this place. Joe and Paul are the two main guys here. Their seemingly infinite knowledge of motorcycles puts them above everyone else. Their service is also unmatchable--they are extremely patient in answering questions and end up asking you follow-up questions to ensure that you understand what they were talking about. I was looking at a Triumph (forgot what model) for my first bike. Their knowledge and expertise pitted me not to get it, and instead led me to my first bike ('05 FZ6). When I first sat on it, I realized that this bike was for me. It just "felt right". Because this was my first big purchase, I was a bit intimidated, which they understood. They did not pressure me to buy at all (I later realized why--it's their reputation that sells these bikes themselves). They were very genuine and friendly during the whole process, and I ended up buying the bike the next day. The whole purchasing process was painless--they took care of all the legal paperwork, informed me where to sign, what DMV documents I needed to have in my possession as I left the store, as well as when I should expect the permanent DMV paperwork. Before I rode out, they spent a great deal of time teaching me about the basics of a motorcycle (I had received my license many years prior and definitely needed a reminder). They also said if there were any issues, I could always call them or even bring it in. I've never had a problem with my motorcycle since then, and it's been over six years now. I have absolute faith in their work. In fact, I ended up buying my second motorcycle, an R6, from them too. What really surprised me was how they were not willing to sell the R6 to a kid several days prior. Seeing it as a nice bike, they wanted to make sure the bike was going to a responsible rider, and not wanting to see a piece of beauty ending up in a wreck. Seeing that I've been regularly riding for a few years, they entrusted that R6 to me, which made me feel honored. I later find out that one of my coworkers have bought four motorcycles from this place and agree with my positive experience with them. In turn, I've turned several other coworkers, as well as friends to this place. Well... Another 5 star rating. It's hard to not be skeptical when a place has all 5 star reviews, but believe the hype. I am a relatively new rider who was in search for my second bike. I had seen a bike on MotoJava's website awhile back and was impressed with the look and price of the bike. When I went to check the website again, it was gone! This place seemed to not only have quality looking bikes, but bikes that were being turned around quickly. As soon as another bike I was curious about popped up online, I knew I had to go in for a visit. Unlike other motorcycle shops, who barely acknowledged my presence, I was immediately greeted by Paul and Joe, the owners of the shop. I began to give my backstory on where I was at as a rider and where I wanted to go with the sport. I told Paul about the bike I had seen online and asked if that would be a good choice. Paul gave me the backstory on that particular bike and also gave me a secondary option I should consider. After sitting on and examining both bikes, I still couldn't decide. They pulled both bikes outside and went through a thorough performance analysis/pros and cons on each of the bikes, where Paul was able to answer all of my questions. In the end, I chose the bike that fit me best and went through the no hassle paperwork that only took 10 minutes. Another interested party was also considering both bikes, but I was assured if it came down to purchase, the patron first in the store would have priority on whichever bike they wanted, a great rule of the shop. Joe walked me through all the essentials of checking the oil and tire pressures on this particular model and Paul double checked again that all parts were working before I rode home. I honestly can not say enough good things about this place and these guys besides, I will definitely be taking my bike back here for any/all services. SO... I went inside MotoJava expecting a little coffee shop, but before I went I did a little research on Yelp and the cafe part of this company is called L'acajou and located in the same building. Confusion ended. This tiny cafe/bakery serves up some mighty fine treats. I got the free cookie that came with my Yelp Check-in (Ginger Molasses) which was good, but my coffee lacked something. I ordered a Vanilla Latte.... but I think they forgot the Vanilla. At least they didn't forget the espresso. I'll give it another go for the cheap breakfast bites they have - like egg sandwiches but I need L'acajou to impress me next time around. read more

As a first time rider & buyer, Paul was very helpful in answering all of my questions, so I picked the bike up on the spot. Fast forward five months, 8000 miles later; purchased a ZX6R for the sportier riding style, and didn't have a reason to keep two bikes. There's a reason this place has so many 5-star reviews, and no doubt most all of them have been listed here. Still, it doesn't hurt to testify one's utter satisfaction with what would be an otherwise painful bump in the credit. Recently, I bought a lightly-used bike from them and was really impressed with the amount of candor with which these guys conduct themselves. They knew I did my research on the bike, so they said, "Do your research on us. Check Yelp." Hah! Living in San Francisco, word of mouth on this place is nothing but glowing. This chit-chat is not without reason. Knowledgeable, thorough, patient, and very, very cool, making sure you get the bike you want and know what you're getting out of the bike. For that alone, I don't mind paying a little more than what I might plop down cash for something off craigslist - and seriously, my bike was just a little more than what I would've paid had I gone that route and was moderately lucky. Plus, I didn't have to meet some random dude with my few-to-several grand in my bag, schedule a pre-purchase inspection with a mechanic, make sure the pink slip was there and that the title was clean, and deal with any of the inconvenient "little fixes" one might have to make with a street purchase. Paul and Joe are very generous with answers about the bike and I've never had a problem with stopping in with questions about it such as, "What oil were you running in this when you serviced it?" or "How do you get this seat off?" you know...stupid stuff like that. None of that, "Thanks...Peace!" attitude you might get elsewhere. The only problem you might have is getting exactly the bike you want. Lucky for me, just that one came through. On that end, I'd suggest you just keep an eye on their website and see which bikes are coming through as they're constantly rolling out bikes. On the other hand, the great thing about their varied selection is that you might walk in there for one bike and find another you might not have considered before. Or, you could just stop by there. I just love these guys. They are so helpful and sweet and always willing to answer questions and go the extra leg. I am also a small woman, and people tend to not take me seriously in traditionally "men's spaces". That was not at all the case with these guys! Both Joe and Paul are patient honest and kind. I walked in here looking at their selection a couple of years ago, and though I didn't find the right bike for me, from my interactions with them I vowed to return here for any moto-related needs in the future, and I have. They did a great tune-up on my first bike, and now that I am ready to switch to a bigger one, I keep checking their website hoping they will get a Vulcan 500, the one I want next. I think I'm gonna borrow a star from my next review to give to this one, bringing it up to six stars. As mentioned, this store is actually a used motorcycle shop and a cafe all in one (hence the name, I think). The cafe is run by the wife of one of the co-owners of the bike shop. So what can I say about this place? I've been interested in bikes for a while and drop into the shop once in a while just to check out the inventory. Every time I'm in there, I manage to end up in protracted discussions about all things motorcycling with both of the guys there (Joe and Paul; they're the owners and sole workers there, as far as I know). Then if I manage to stop chatting in time to go to the cafe, I'm treated to some of the best sandwiches I've ever found. To borrow a phrase, "yummers!" As previously mentioned, these guys will buy your bike from you (assuming it's not a steaming pile), tune it up (often on their own dime), and then sell the next customer a steed that can actually be trusted to not break down twelve minutes after it rolls out the door. (Whether or not said customer gets creamed by psychotic/idiotic SF car drivers in the same time frame, cannot be guaranteed unfortunately...) The last time I went in there, they had almost a shop full of bikes (around eight or ten), and then a week later they were all sold to happy customers. I bought a 2005 Yamaha FZ-6 today from MotoJava and it went about as great as I could have ever hoped for. Joe and Paul are real class-acts - knowledgeable, friendly, and fair. This is my second bike, but most importantly, my first upgrade from the "starter" bike. Joe helped walk me through the inventory and steered me towards a bike that was not only perfect for my current skill level, but also towards exactly what I was looking for in a new bike (more power, freeway use, etc.). When I moved to SF and was looking for a place to rebuild the head I wandered into a bunch of motorcycle shops. MotoJava was one of them. Turns out there is no place in SF that will do such work, but Paul referred me to Engine Dynamics in Petaluma. His advice was worth the trip over and the service I got from Engine Dynamics was great. I made a note in my head of the positive interaction I've had at MotoJava. Then recently I was looking for a second bike along with the 1980 one I had (I end up tinkering with the old bike to make it an every day commuter). I found three promising bikes on the MotoJava site: a salvage title SV650S, a 2006 Ninja 250, and a Honda Nighthawk 250. When I popped in, I prepared a long list of questions (how do the drum brakes feel? how hard are radiators to maintain? why is it a salvage title? and so on). Paul helpfully answered each one (of what must have seemed like incessant) inquiries. I dropped by the next day and put down the deposit. The paperwork took 10 minutes and Joe let me keep the bike at MotoJava for two weeks until I figured out the insurance for it. I had such a positive experience with MotoJava that I would certainly recommend the shop to anyone looking to purchase a new bike! Joe and Paul are great! read more

Okay ! This shop is totally worth going to... my husband and I had one of the best experiences at MotoJava. I normally don't like to gush about places, but sometimes you have to call it like you see it, and if that means gushing, well, then... Most of what I'm going to say has already been said, but places like this really deserve as many positive reviews as they can get, so I'll throw my two pennies into the fire. I came here a couple of weeks ago looking for my very first motorcycle after taking the MSF class a month prior. I was, and still largely am, a greenhand in the purest sense of the word. I tried doing as much research beforehand as possible, but there's still a big gap between making the jump from watching others ride motorcycles to actually doing it and I couldn't have been more pleased with the start I got at motojava. I had so many questions (I probably forgot half of them in the excitement of buying the bike) and every single one of them was answered with great care and patience. I was really impressed with Paul's willingness to spend however much time necessary getting me acquainted with the bike. He went over all these little details that I would've never thought to ask on my own. You can tell he really cares about making sure you are comfortable with it before letting you take off. The other co-owner, Joe, is also fantastic. I called them on a Monday, which is a one of their rest days as it turns out, and he still picked up the phone and stayed on the line for like 10 minutes explaining some basic maintenance tips to me. Motorcycle Shop Review: I had heard many good things about MotoJava from motorcycle riding friends all over the Bay Area, and I have to say I agree whole-heartedly! I did have to watch their website like a hawk, because the available bikes move fast in the spring time. They were down to only 3 available when I walked into the shop to get a preview of a bike they had mentioned secondarily on the site. It's a good thing I got there 1 hour before it was to hit the showroom floor to put unofficial 'dibs' on it, as another guy tried to get 'dibs' a half an hour after I did. Deep down both Joe and Paul are geeks (this is a non-pejorative statement coming from a Software Engineer!), and I was almost instantly comfortable talking to them, as they are sincere and approachable. I am a newer rider, and Joe very specifically helped make sure the bike was as right for me as I was for the bike. Joe and Paul will do their best to make sure your purchase is an appropriate and happy one. As an added bonus, every time I go back with a question, Joe offers me a 'tip of the day' which is a suggestion or hint about riding in general that helps me become a better rider. This is a great shop with some great people offering bikes at great prices. They do a lot for their customers as well as for the riding community in general. Keep up the great work, guys! read more

Well, that pretty much sums up MotoJava. I've been riding bikes for 20 years now, I've gone through my phase of fixing up my own bikes, but as I get older I just want bikes that run and I want a mechanic to fix whatever is wrong with it. I've been to quite a few shops in the city looking for that mechanic and have been let down quite a few times. A friend of mine a few y ears ago purchased a bike through MotoJava and I didn't hear one thing about the bike, because she couldn't stop RAVING about the owners and the service. She's kind of curmudgeonly so this is a big deal. Not but 3 months later did I give up on my old bike and decide to sell and buy a new one. These guys bought my old bike and spent the next two hours with me while I sat on everything they had, talking bike talk, hanging out. I want this shop to adopt me. I would work here for free, if I could. Ironically, I didn't purchase any bike from them, but what did happen was incredible. I've recommended this shop to every single biker I know. For everything. I TRUST them. I'm bringing my new bike into them next week for frame sliders and everything else I need for it. Thanks for restoring my faith guys! Consider that adoption thing, too. read more

Although I haven't purchased any bikes from them till now, but I feel comfortable speaking for them. They are really nice guys, you can go and check out all the bikes that they have. Couple of times I went there their supply was limited (They have only 6-7 bikes at any time), hence you will have to stay in touch with them to get what you want, if you know what you want. They do tune up and fix whatever needs to be fixed before they sell so the bikes are in pretty good condition. True that you will be spending few hundred dollar more compared to if you were to buy from private seller but you don't have to go through all the hassle, and being inspected by professional mechanics means you will be fairly safe purchasing one from them which means it is totally worth it. As per me, I went through the hassle more so because I was particular about what I wanted. read more

Moto Mike was rude, condescending, and unhelpful. I have cash and can buy today, however he decided to behave unprofessionally and cost a sale. Regardless of what machine I want, I will not be buying it from here. I asked if the compression had been checked and requested the readings if so. He proceeded to be condescending and rude. When asked if he was the store owner he didn't answer but instead continued being rude. Oh well. His behavior cost you guys a cash sale for that DR650. This would have been my 16th motorcycle, I'm very familiar with purchasing and sales, this was a very unusual experience. read more

Wow, I can't believe I almost forgot to review MotoJava and give them credit for all the great advice they've given me. When I was first looking for a bike, I went into MotoJava to look at their selection of bikes and talk to Paul, a person I was told to ask for when going there. He let me sit on a few bikes of interest and gave me some info about them... ride-ability, friendliness for beginners, etc. We talked about my experience behind the wheel and came to the conclusion that I should purchase a particular bike... one he didn't have. Not only had he been very nice to take time and break down the whole bike thing for me, he recommended a bike he didn't even carry at that moment. I thanked him for his time and very much appreciated his advice. A week later, I found and purchased the bike we talked about. Each time I've needed anything, maintenance, etc, I'd call them first. I always want to give them my business and show my support for their great work, and they've never let me down. Now, I'm on my 2nd bike, and still think about them before anyone else when I need service of any kind. Go MotoJava! read more
