I am a new rider and purchased a used bike that I thought was having carburetor issues. I dropped it off at Toykomoto to look it over and perform some routine maintenance. Shortly after, my bike was still stalling. I called them back and spoke with the owner, Shawn, who wanted to make it right and personally came out to my place and kept my bike for a few weeks to try and replicate the situation. The entire time he had it, he would give me updates.As it turns out, it was just me being a noob and not using the fuel reserve correctly. Shawn was very helpful and professional throughout the whole interaction; I was only charged for the cost of fuel. He's incredibly easy to work with -- great communication, completely transparent, and explains everything clearly so you always know what's going on with your bike. I brought my motorcycle in after a low-speed drop that left my steering feeling notchy. Shawn and the team did a thorough front-end inspection, including test riding the bike, checking alignment, and identifying that the steering head bearings needed to be replaced. On top of that, they had no issue honoring my request to double-check the wheel bearings, front suspension, and rear wheel alignment. It's now been 1,500 miles and a full track day since the service, and I'm still extremely satisfied with the results. The bike feels planted, smooth, and confidence-inspiring. I had a really disappointing and shady experience here. They charged me over $300 just for an estimate on a repair quote -- and never mentioned anything about this fee beforehand. No transparency at all. Most reputable shops clearly tell you if there's a diagnostic charge. Here, you only find out when the bill shows up. On top of that, the repair quote they gave me was ridiculous. It felt like they wanted to replace almost every part on my bike, basically pricing it as if they were building a new bike from scratch. Instead of diagnosing the real issue or offering reasonable options, they just pushed an over-the-top, inflated repair list. If you value honesty, transparency, and fair pricing, I'd strongly recommend avoiding this place. read more

This is coming from someone who runs a bike shop myself and was a recent service manager. So... I would like to say I have a little experience with this type of business and environment. I would recommend these guys to anyone who loves motorcycles and moto culture. The owner does a great job of keeping just about everything yoy need in stock and knows the quality parts to sell. I commute on my drz and he keeps lots of parts for my bike in stock. I even had to rebuild my fule petcock and boom. He had it in stock. Recently he helped me with a chain issue and went above and beyond. Now I feel much safer than I did and that means the world to me and my loved ones. TLDR: the only place I feel comfortable getting my motorcycle worked on. -- I've gone through three different Japanese sport bikes over the past decade and never felt the need to take my motorcycle anywhere other than TokyoMoto. They do work on all types of motorcycles, but it's a nicer feeling to know the mechanic specializes on Yamahas and knows all the ins and outs of the bike. I typically do the easier maintenance on my own, but the larger service such as valve adjustments or other issues, I know I can trust Shawn and his team to get the job done. I can also count on his honesty to inform me of all the different things going on with my motorcycle, without feeling pressured to pay for additional services I don't need. I would highly recommend this shop to friends and family, and I continue to take my motorcycle here for service even though I now live over 25miles away. read more

Be aware of Shawn and his business practices. I NEVER asked or tried to extort anything for free from him. However, I will NOT pay for crappy service and that is my right as a consumer. Instead of accepting constructive criticism or trying to correct the problem, he spent hours convincing Yelp to remove my original review (I didn't think that was posible) He invested so much time and came up with the idea that I had lied by saying that my review was intended to get something for free. Shady! Not the case at all. The BBB was also contacted and he is trying to pull the same stunt. I brought my Suzuki GXS-R for service. I was very specific with Malcolm about getting the motorcycle tuned up and ready to be sold. The chain was extremity lose; that was the main reason for me to bring it in. I said tighten the chain, check the front tire for leaks and and do a tune up. The tune up was the icing in the cake. I received a phone call to let me know that they were advising to replace the chain and the front tire. However, he failed to tell me that the chain could not be adjusted anymore. He never asked what I wanted to do; that's what a mechanic is suppose to do. The tune up or the chain or both. The front tire was low on air because I had not used the bike in a while but it is in good condition. I assumed the chain had been tighten and that it would have to eventually replaced. I take the bike home, and realized the chain had not been tighten at all. It absolutely needed to be replaced. That the screws that hold the seat in place were missing and my rear brakes were completely gone. To me, a tuneup is a general basic inspection of a vehicle. The fact that all of these was missed, that I wasn't advised about either the screws, the breaks snd Instead I was being upsold a front tire that I didn't need, is very disappointing. A good honest mechanic would have screwed the seat in place. He would have most definitely advice to replace the chain and explain why. This is an absolute safety issue as opposed to the tune up. He would have given me the choice before doing anything and he would most definitely would have advised about the rear breaks as they can be checked by touch and without having to test ride the bike. I was charged $130 for an oil change that took 15 minutes to do. I called back and instead of rectifying the problem, I was involved in a pointless argument. I threaten verbally and I writing not to ever set foot in his shop. Thank God for competition. read more

With prior arrangement, I gave the seat to him on Wednesday. His guy was done on Thursday. I picked it up Friday. The seat looked great, they took about 2" down. My bike was run over by a distracted driver and deemed a total loss. Sean received my bike prior to the diagnosis and from the minute we spoke over the phone he was helpful & accommodating, all the way up until the insurance company picked the bike up from the shop. Sean made the necessary arrangements to have my bike towed from the East Bay, to his shop and facilitated the entire process, making my experience seamless & as painless as possible. He was helpful as well in informing me of the process regarding the total loss assessment of my bike, letting me know what to expect as well as what my rights and/or options were as far as dealing with the insurance company and pursuing a fair settlement amount for the totaled bike. Sean was available for any and all questions I had and ensured that he would be accessible to us for any further assistance we might need in the future while dealing with this situation even though it was the Xmas holiday and he was taking a vacation. I don't know about anyone else here, but in my experience dealing with any motorcycle related issues, be they with mechanics or sales representatives, I've found the individuals I've dealt with to be pretentious and patronizing, very impressed with themselves, with very limited communication skills. Nothing more than self-important, talking anal cavities in my humble opinion. I used to have work done at WerkStatt. I went there for a decade. But then they closed. Somebody, maybe formerly with WerkStatt, recommended these folks. They are great. The shop hourly rate is reasonable. Customer service is efficient and friendly. I'm in and out quickly. The work appears highly competent. I haven't had any issues. My regular ride is a Honda Hawk GT, a 1990 model, meaning it's now 30 years old. It has about 27,500 miles on it. They've kept it running perfectly despite my neglect. The one thing to note, which you likely know, is that they moved from their formerly weird location off of South Van Ness to another space in I guess what is called the warehouse district. It's convenient for me. It's also not difficult to find. read more

Sean and Alex are great people to work with on bike consultation and repair. I have a 1992 Nighthawk that was bought from auction. Before their help the bike would intermittently stop after some freeway miles. I use to leave the gas cap open to ride it as the bike had some fuel system issues. They opened up Pandora's box and found a few issues that took some investigating. One was the gas cap that did not have the correct venting, a battery that flatlined and leaky carb. After about 3 weeks and reverse engineering they were able to solve the main problem of a gas cap. Sounds simple enough to replace but not to drill a hole for proper venting. The labyrinth had no access to outside air when it came from the factory. I am new to this bike but not to riding and acquired some strong knowledge about this particular model. The next thing up for me is carb gaskets and a jet kit. Will see them in the near future ! read more
