Update: Motoworks reached out to me after my initial review, which appears below. Their service department has instituted protocols to avoid customer experiences like mine. During phone conversations their staff was honest, forthright and apologetic. Judging by the other reviews on this site, my experience was atypical. Motoworks is, unfortunately, the only motorcycle garage in Chicago with Triumph and BMW - trained mechanics. The dearth of choice for repairs would be less hard to live with if Motoworks were a decently-run operation. I've had two repairs done to my Triumph - once to replace a handlebar and later to have the water pump and temperature sensor replaced. Each time the bike was laid up in the shop for around 3 months. The shop seems to take on so many bikes that their service department is constantly backed up - resulting in frustratingly long wait times. Also, they performed repairs without informing me - once charging $99.95 for a battery without letting me know that it needed replacing. If it's broken it's broken but who wants to see unknown extras on their final bill? read more

Where do I even begin! I was in the market to purchase a new bike. I was originally looking at a one of Triumphs competitors.....cough cough HD's. But I could not get over how pushy the salesmen were. They wouldn't have the model I was looking for in stock and would try to get me on a bike $10k more then what I wanted. Frustrated, I gave up looking for awhile. Then I did some research on Triumphs, and was interested in looking at them. Heres where Motoworks comes in: I spoke to Grant in sales in mid June looking for a specific model. They had one of the last of them in stock. I wasn't able to get in right away. He took my info, yet didn't hound me 4 times a day like a couple other dealerships did. I was able to make it in about a week later and I met with Grant. He showed me the bike and I was sold! He knew his bikes, he did not try to up-sell me. While we worked on the the paperwork he introduced me to their staff, parts dept. and mechanics. Next up was the financing: I met with Nina and she was great. She gave me no BS, was straight forward and all around awesome! The financing was painless, Triumph had some great promo rates and she got me locked in. Overall I have never been so pleased with a dealership in my life!!! A couple weeks back, I noticed that my Monster 696's oil filter was seeping oil. A bit of a turn with a strap wrench slowed, but didn't stop the seepage. Perusing online, this is apparently not an uncommon occurrence with Ducati filters, because Italian 'quirkiness,' I suppose. My bike was due for the 1 year service (belt/valve inspection, oil change) anyway, so I called on a Thursday scheduled an appointment to bring my bike in on a Saturday morning. I also wanted to get some Oxford Heated Grips installed that I had picked up last Black Friday but never got around to putting on myself over the winter. I expected to wait at least a week to get my bike back, but to my surprise, it was done the following Wednesday. Unfortunately, I couldn't pick it up until the following Saturday anyway. I picked up my bike that Saturday. Fortunately, I didn't need any belts replaced or valves adjusted, as the latter would've doubled my labor costs. My heated grips threw out a pretty good amount of heat on the max setting, but unfortunately the grips shifted as I was riding away, so back to Motoworks I went. A tech immediately set to re-gluing them on, so I had to wait around a bit for the adhesive to cure. Either not enough adhesive got put on the grips, it got moved before the adhesive fully cured, or it had gone somewhat bad in the packaging (it was included with the grips I'd bought). In any case, they were nice and solid after I brought it back. The price on the 1 year service was exactly what I'd been quoted with no surprises. I'd scheduled this service at Motoworks due to the convenience of the location near my work, but if you can make it to MCC in Villa Park (where I had my 600 mile break-in service done) and want to save money, I'd recommend MCC for major services. A synthetic oil change on my bike was $72 at MCC instead of $94 it was at Motoworks. The hourly labor rate at Motoworks was $140/hr, while it was $110 at MCC. MCC also provided a checklist of things done for the scheduled service performed there, while Motoworks did not. The downside was that MCC didn't do my service anywhere near as quickly as Motoworks, but that could've been because it was already May, as opposed to October when people are starting to put their bikes away for winter. read more

When I was scooter shopping I pretty much knew exactly what I wanted (Kymco People)... There are two places in Chicago that sell them, Mr Moto (also known as Motoworks) and Scooter Works. I called both. A friend of mine had recommended Mr Moto as well. I liked Mr Moto's people on the phone much more but ended up going to Scooterworks since they took Discover Card and I was too impatient to wait a week until payday. I probably would've gotten a better deal at Mr Moto, too. bummer... Also, Motoworks / Mr Moto will let you test drive the scooter you buy, Scooter Works did not. (Scooter Works in general was a complete douchebag experience comparatively, but that's another review). After then getting hit by a taxi, I took it to Mr Moto for an estimate. The next day I got a call from them telling me they needed a credit card number from me to charge me $150 for the estimate--something they didn't tell me when I went in for it. They said they charge that but if you get the work done then they reimburse it out of the work. I found this annoying and I didn't give them one. I didn't fret too much, I knew I wasn't ripping them off and was going in for the work either way since the taxi's insurance was paying for it... A few weeks later I took it there for the repair work. I also got a 90 day tuneup at the same time. A few days after I picked it up. The work was done as expected and I was very pleased with the turnout (they also derestricted it for more or less no charge because it was done at the same time as the tune-up). The people here are very nice, and really knew what they were talking about. Some of them are in their 50's and have been doing this for their whole life, they really know their stuff. Their showroom is super cool as well... They have a lot of scooters to see (including a few used ones), but also a lot of motorcycles. There are a lot of really vintage motorcycles (vintage BMW 'cycles, British this or that, and just a few other things I wouldn't even know what they were), perhaps this is their specialty. If you're taking public transportation, the Western bus might be convenient, or they are directly adjacent to the Western stop on the Pink Line. read more

Motoworks is a hidden gem in the vintage motorcycle and scooter world of Chicago. I suppose I should use the term "hidden" lightly because their business is booming and expanding greatly. The showroom is stock piled with a good assortment of scooters and some bikes. My favorite part of the place is their large storeroom of bikes being stored, repaired or in line for sale. It's hard to get my companion out of there once he wanders in. The staff is always friendly. They will take their time to explain any questions you have. They don't just work with bikes, you can tell they are very dedicated to motorcycles. From a service aspect they managed to tame my 1974 honda cb360 into fine working condition. It did take time and require patience, but you have to realize that kind of delay when you bring in work at the start of riding season. They worked wonders on the bike and I haven't had any problems with it since. read more

This shop is top notch! A+ on all counts. I bought my ducati here and right from the first time I stepped through the door, the service was excellent! Helpful with all questions and options, no pressure on the floor and they make sure you have all the knowledge you need before purchasing your baby. I also went in for my first checkup and the service guys working on my bike took the time to even come out and explain things. Bottom line, the make you feel at home and part of the team. I have NEVER written a bad review but I need to help others not experience the same...so please consider my experience and be warned this place is...Bad bad bad...I had to give 1 star because that is the lowest. Really a ZERO is more accurate. 1. Quoted $175 each way for 2 Vespas...invoiced $600 (they fixed when I complained) 2. Quoted $180 per bike to have technician look over bikes...was not told this until bikes were there...this does NOT come of the repair work..Invoice $210 per bike. (RIP OFF TOTAL SO FAR $310-$700 depending on your perspective) 3 Net result...I was charged $1500 for 1 Carby Clean ($210) 4. Lesson learned...this will not happen again! Repair manager called to apologize and said this would be a learning for him and his team...deducted $12 off bill.. So...BE warned! This is NOT the best shop in town ... read more

Best group of people you could work with ever. Greeted promptly with hello, welcome, and how can we help you. I know that is supposed to be a given but I didn't get that at shopping at other locations. Even with a busy house they asked if me and my girlfriend would like a tour of the place. I bought a Monster this past weekend from Nina. She was great to work with. Any questions you might have, they can answer. Nobody is at all like your typical pushy salesman/woman. She let me come to my own decision on everything. Johnny was incredibly helpful. I brought a vehicle to take the bike home in and he offered to load it himself right away. Got the bike secured and I got home with zero problems. He is very passionate about everything and it shows with his customers. Great people and great service is what helped me choose to purchase from Motoworks. Everyone is great and gives the place a very welcoming feeling. I have purchased 2 bikes from this place and looking to buy a third one.. Until now. Their sales staff is fantastic! Very personal and I felt they look for your best interest. SERVICE is terrible though! The second bike I bought had a defect and sales kindly offered to repair it for free after I purchased. I dropped off my bike on Tuesday with the promise I would get it back over the weekend, and its been 10 days now and nothing. I live in Chicago so we don't get much time to ride, so I haven't been able to enjoy my new bike. The worse part is the every time I called service, they were very short and kept giving me the excuses "parts arrived defective twice" "ahh we don't really work on Japanese bikes" then why did you offer to fix it in the first place? Just today I tried calling about 5 times and no answer :-( Too bad that they're allowing something so simple to break a relationship with a customer, who will not be returning. read more

First time and not pleased at all! All I wanted to do was purchase my first motorcycle from a reputable shop/dealer located in Chicago that has great reviews and comes highly recommended...regrettably, that didn't happen! Don't get me wrong, as soon as I walked in I was greeted by a woman behind the front desk, asked what brought me in, given a tour since it was my first time in and offered coffee; unfortunately, that's not what I came in for. I came to purchase a motorcycle, cash-in-hand and eager to ride. After a tour of the showroom, the customer-bike storage area and the mechanics shop I was told that a sales-rep would assist me shortly. First and foremost, let me remind you this is my first experience at the facility and I made it known. (You'd think they would spend a little more time making sure you felt welcomed, had your questions answered and tried selling you a bike) I must of spent what felt like an eternity browsing through the limited selection of used bikes waiting for this "sales-rep" to show up and assist me. At this point, maybe 30 mins have passed and still no assistance. I purposely went back out to the main sales showroom where their new unpriced bikes were and still no assistance. I lingered around for maybe 5 more minutes while I witnessed two sales-reps sitting behind a desk chatting it up with each other and on the other side my tour guide/front-desk greeter hanging with what seemed like another sales-rep, possibly an owner. As I began to make my way up the stairs and out of the facility everyone continued on with their conversations. Not even a thanks for swinging by, a have a great day or hey, did you find anything you liked? I'm glad sales is not important for this dealership... Unfortunately, my cash and I walked out together to continue our search for the perfect motorcycle elsewhere. I've been coming to Motoworks for years--for a long time to kick tires when I was riding other brands of motorcycles, and more recently, to service and buy parts for a used Triumph I picked up. Simply put, these guys are awesome. Listen, there are a lot of bad dealers out there--what I love about Motoworks is that it's how people who truly love motorcycles would setup a dealer. Want to test ride something? Or five things, back to back? No problem. Want to special order a seat, install and sit on it for awhile on a demo bike, and then decide whether or not you want to actually buy it? Cool with them. Want to talk shop with folks who actually know their bikes or go to one of the seemingly endless events they put on year round for the motorcycle community? They've got you covered...and in fact these guys have as much cred for what they do on motorcycles after hours as they do for running a great business. Trust me when I say these are rare and wonderful things in an industry where a motorcycle is more than likely to be sold alongside a snowmobile and/or outboard engine by somebody who can hardly tell the difference. I was passing through Chicago to visit with my brother while on a cross-country-and-back motorcycle trip. I needed a new front tire mounted and an oil change. After having really annoying conversations with the 2 local BMW dealers who came off like total jack*sses, I turned to Motoworks at the recommendation of a friend. I was highly confident I was in for a good experience based on my phone conversation with Milan, who seemed genuinely excited at the prospect of helping out fellow a rider on a long journey with a bike in need of some service. Once I found the super-secret Bat Cave entrance in the back alley, Milan greeted me like we were old drinking buddies and gave me the 50-cent tour of the building, which is a really cool old printing press operation with numerous nicely restored bikes around. Then he introduced me to Johnny, the GM, who chatted with me and entertained my questions about the entrepreneurial side of running a bike shop. These are not bean-counting franchise droids who barely tolerate the necessity of interacting with customers on a one-to-one level. They're actual humans who love bikes, and if you love bikes too, they're apparently happy to talk with you. Amazing!? By then my bike was up on a stand and the work underway, so I walked to Dunkin Donuts for my coffee and grabbed a couple dozen assorted donuts to give to the crew at the shop as a token of appreciation. When I got back, Milan and Steve busted out a road atlas and pulled up Google Maps on the computer and we talked about my ride so far and the remaining journey back home to San Francisco. They also showed me all the best roads within about 2 days' ride from Chicago. Sweet. With the tire mounted and oil change done, Zack and Holly also diagnosed the problem with my dead left grip heater (no charge, it was a new problem for them and thus a learning opportunity). Based on the fault code the computer is throwing it's likely a problem in the wiring harness. Nice to know -- I won't bother grounding the bike for this work during the journey, but if it had just been a matter of swapping in a new part/grip I might have tried to get that done at a dealer along the way somewhere. Now I know, and will leave this until I'm back home. Thanks! BTW, they even offered to let me use their shop space and tools if there was anything I wanted to wrench on myself before taking off. For a useful study in contrast, remember my phone call with the BMW dealer in Barrington (Cycle Werks) who flatly refused to mount a tire I hadn't bought from his dealership at the typical crazy full-retail markup price? Think that guy was gonna offer me use of his shop and tools? Nope, me neither. Oh yeah, and their detailing guy also gave my very dirty bike a quick complimentary once-over at Steve's request (though of course I tipped him). On the way out I tried to buy a Motoworks t-shirt as a souvenir, but they insisted on throwing it (and a baseball cap too) in for free. All this for a guy who they know lives 2000 miles away and therefore cannot be a repeat customer -- so this is purely just paying it forward here. Forgot the world could still work this way? Me too, pretty much. So..If you live in ChaicagoLand and ride a cycle or a scooter: please, please, please stop by to visit Motoworks and consider becoming a customer. There's nothing better than finding a shop where they know your name, there's a nice positive vibe from everyone working there, you can trust them to work on your bike, and you know your machine is in the hands of fellow riders. These are exactly the kind of guys you want working on your bike. Everyone at the shop takes a lot of pride in their work and they're all very personable. Take a stroll in and you'll most likely be greeted by Johnny, who will gladly give you a tour of their facility and all the bikes they've got in storage. I've been glad to hand them work - and this is coming from someone who usually doesn't trust anyone but myself to work on my vehicles. Pete and Steven (Steven was more thorough with me) explained a lot of things to me regarding scooters and battery life, city driving, valve issues, etc. (My scooter was having a hard time starting earlier in the week). Anyway, my scooter has been running fine since I got it back, and I now have a "smart charger"/"pig tail charger" thing attached to make sure battery is always charged. They even washed my scooter for me! ONLY downfall is they are pricey... I spent $450 for basically a battery charge, fluid change, and valve adjustment. But again - you pay for what you get and I got a clean scooter that runs great! So I really am happy! read more

What a pleasure! I took my scooter here after Scooter Works did a hack job tune up on it. It essentially stopped working after the tune up and they (scooter works) couldnt figure out what the issue was. I then took it to Motorworks and they were able to diagnose it and get it working right away! I was in communication with Christina Colon and she was wonderful. They even let me know that my headlights were dimmer than normal and Kymco had a recall on a part and they were going to fix it for free! A+ compared to Scooter Works. read more

Contrary to some other reviewers, I had a fantastic experience here. Recently had my 92 Honda Nighthawk 750 serviced here. Rode it up there once and spoke with a couple of people there on a Saturday afternoon (Johnny and Steve) and set up an appt. for fluid changes, carb rebuild, tune up for two weeks later. Thought everyone was really nice - - they allowed me to walk throughout the warehouse and look at all the big projects they had around - very cool. Dropped my bike off and they said they should have it done within a week. Totally fine with me - - was out of state riding my Bonnie with my dad through Ohio and WV so I was in no rush. Surprisingly, they called me two days later while on vacation and told me that my 750 was ready. Picked it up the following week and it now runs absolutely fantastic. Very satisfied with their work and thought the work was done for a fair price. She's now spot on... I just cannot imagine anyone having a bad experience with these guys. I will continue to take my bikes their for service...and just stop by to drool at the bikes/scoots in their sales area. read more

If I die, I want to have my service here. I came to motoworks a couple times in process of trying to buy a ducati. Mind you, this was a looong ordeal--multiple phone calls, financing applications, etc. Due to weather and work, this also meant multiple times visiting the shop without actually purchasing. All throughout, my sales person, Nina, was the bomb. Never a single complaint, she was seriously everything you could ask for when buying your first bike. She was never pushy and pretty much fought tooth and nail for addons here and there. Typically, I'd try to shop around and see prices here and there, but my experience was so good, i didn't even bother to call up a competing shop for their 'quote'. Everyone I met in the shop was really nice and true riders, and damn, I've never seen so many bikes in a garage before! All in all, if you're getting a bike, I would stop here first and last! read more

I brought my scooter here 10 years ago and have taken it back to be serviced after two accidents and both times I have gotten my bike back in worse condition. The most recent time they had my bike almost two months and now my bike won't start. They are scammers who will lie to make sure they look good. Wait a minute, how am I the first person to write a review for Motoworks? What the hell people, shout out! Let me break it down for you from day 1: September 2009: Bought my Kymco People 150 from Motoworks. Bonnie is a great sales person and gave me a phenomenal deal. March 2010: Put 750+ miles on it over the fall/winter and had it serviced. Great service team who care about your bike and are down to talk shop for as much time as you can spare. October 2010: Went to the Triumph GT unveiling. Had some beers and a brat and a great time trying on some Triumphs. Spoke to a few of their sales reps and owner Johnny Scheff, all of of them are great and super knowledgeable. Their primary mission is not to upsell you to a bike you don't need but to rather get you the bike that is right for your needs and lifestyle. November 2010: I had 2 aftermarket accessories installed. Windscreen and a new exhaust system. Service department was again awesome and they even cleaned my scoot. I walked in last year and was helped by Chris B on the purchase of my Vespa. He was very helpful and the easiest sales person to work with. He didn't pressure me on anything, gave me lots of options and worked with me on the price of some of the accessories. I'd highly recommend Motorworks. It's a clean setup with friendly faces. When I upgrade to a Triumph in the next couple years I will be back to purchase from them. read more

Do not buy from Motoworks Chicago!!! Bad experience!!! Before the pandemic I walked into the dealership and no one approached me, no one asked if I needed help, I sat on a few bikes an left. I had to walk all the way to the front to ask a question. Weeks later i emailed them and they wanted roughly $2,500 over the msrp on a street triple RS for a total out the door price of roughly $14,700. They did not justify the $2,500 other than tax, title, and fee's. This dealership doesn't want to make a deal. This dealership isn't trying to make money. It should have stopped there. I later on Facebook had to block Zachary Stern because he was interfering with a public post I made on street triple RS owners. He was very disrespectful and after a little research discovered he was an employee at this establishment. Then he continued to threaten me by "hoping I don't cross his path." I took my 1981 BMW R65 in for service. They rebuilt my and synced my carbs, fixed my ignition timing and valve clearances. The work was done quickly, correctly and for a very fair price. Everyone at the shop was very passionate and knowledgeable about the different types of Airhead beemers. I was able to talk directly with the tech that worked on my bike and his years of experience really shine through. It seems like they do a lot of scooter business to pay the bills.I trust they probably do a good job with them too. read more

Just got my 1986 Honda Ch150D scooter back from Motorworks on Western this week. After having other shops over promise and under deliver, I decided to give Motorworks a chance. I'm so glad I did. George in their service department is top notch. I most appreciated his honesty about telling me the critical issues verses the recommended ones. I valued his opinion cause he didn't try to rack up the charges, he thoroughly explained the cost/benefit of the services I needed and again followed up after their initial inspection of the scooter. I went in for a tune up and have the tires replaced. They ended up replacing a damaged manifold at cost. SWEET! For a 20+ year old scooter, the guys over at Motorworks gave it new life at a reasonable price. As for turn around time, I was patient, cause I know this is the peak season. With the sporadic warm weather, everyone with a scooter got them out recently and realized they need service on them. With only 3 places in Chicago to choose from to get service, they all undoubtedly will be busy. The total service time was just over 2 weeks, but almost a week of that was waiting on a part from Honda. Overall I would recommend this place for service, but be patient, there's lots of scooters to repair but only so many techs that are experienced enough to fix them. Also noted the shop had lots of cool new Vespa scooters in their showroom to check out, but I'm not a Vespa kinda guy. But it was fun to browse the scooters while I waited to pick up my scooter. read more

I purchased my first scooter here at a recommendation of a friend, and I couldn't be happier with my experience. The people at Motoworks definitely had the best deal on my Vespa, and all the interaction with the service team has been spectacular. Also, I purchased several accessories here (helmet, etc), and remember thinking that their helmet options were very expensive compared to other places. However, now that I understand a little bit more about them, I realize that Motoworks prices reflect great craftsmanship which makes all the difference in the world. read more

It is with a heavy heart that I write this review. I wanted to like this place, have heard great things about it and want to support a local shop, but I have now called five times during business hours to try and get a service appointment for my scooter. Three of those times someone took my name and number and said I would get a call, but I never received a call back. The other two times no one answered at all (and no, it wasn't lunchtime). I know it's an especially busy season and the scooter shops are straining to try and accommodate the surging demand this year. But I have trouble accepting the lack of professionalism and customer service. I don't know if it's because they are stretched way too thin, or if they're just busy enough that they don't have to bother calling me back. Either way, I mean, with five calls I don't think anyone can say I didn't give them a fair chance. Sorry guys, one star. For the record, I would be willing (even happy) to revisit this review if a future interaction with them improves my impression. EDIT: I called one more time, and when leaving my contact info I let the guy know that it's my fifth or sixth time leaving my information. A gal from the service dept called a few minutes later, told me profusely that they appreciate my business, but apologetically said they do not service my make of scooter (Genuine) due to trouble getting parts. So, upgrade to three stars because I'm willing to still give them the benefit of the doubt and don't want to bust their rating here unnecessarily. But I mean, you don't not-return a call just cuz the answer is "sorry, we can't help you." read more

A very enthusiastic guy owns this place and I love coming here to see all the stuff he has. I bought all my heated gear here and he gave me a great price for it. I took my husband here and got him a heated Gerbings jacket too and again, he gave me a great price. I WISH WISH WISH he would work on my bike, but he doesn't currently work on Japanese bikes because he's super busy with BMW's and scooters. boo! read more

Wow. Really nice place! My salesmen (Chris) was the man. Very cool guy, no high-pressure B.S... I will certainly return here for future bike purchases. I had such a good experience working with these guys, really! It was way laid back, the first thing he did was to give me a little tour of the shop and fill me in on what was going on. He also answered my questions very honestly when comparing models. If you are inexperienced in purchasing scooters or bikes Chris is especially a good guy to talk to. He clearly stated what you will get for your money on more expensive models (very frankly as well, i.e. he pointed out that one model was more expensive just because of the brand name and actually was not mechanically superior). The bike I wanted was on sale and I didn't even know it. The tag had one price on it and then Chris checked the computer and sold it to me for considerably less! I'm a bike guy, especially vintage British and European makes. I've encountered far too many shops that have interesting bikes for sale, most taken for trade-in, and can't answer the most basic questions. This also tells me that I can forget about their service department. I have my eye on a vintage BMW and the folks at Motoworks were not only knowledgeable but also shared the same passion for motorcycles as I do.
