Came here since it is right around the corner. I got salmon avocado roll, salmon avocado hand roll, salmon sashimi (I'm a big salmon guy), and some miso soup. In terms of bang for your buck it is awesome. It was very fresh and quite tasty. Not too mention the 6 piece sushi rolls are only $4 during happy hour. There is outdoor seating which is really pleasant. Wasn't super busy either so service was pretty quick. Only negative is the waiter didn't seem overly thrilled to be there and seemed like whenever we needed something it was a pain for her. Spicy edamame was the best we've ever had. We're from Florida and have tried spicy edamame all over Orlando and such. It came out hot and whatever they cook it in is amazing. Being a sushi lover I've been to a fair share of different sushi restaurants. 4 stars because the sashimi pieces was smaller than Im used to, the spicy scallop hand roll tho had 5 big scallops in it. Falls under a 3.5 - 4.0 range. Went here for lunch with coworkers and was definitely pleasantly surprised. This restaurant is run by Chinese people so I wasn't expecting their food to be authentic, but it's actually quite good. I ordered the Una Don (eel) which was much larger than expected. The unagi was also quite sizable which made it even better. As a big eater, the size was definitely a bonus at Mottsu. In terms of flavor, the Una don was quite good, but it wasn't excellent. Pretty customary sauces and for what it was worth, it was pretty good. Expect straight-up run of the mill Japanese food at Mottsu. Service was fantastic and prices were reasonable. Great find! My parents and I ate here with my parents before seeing a show at the Lynn Redgrave theater. (The play was a dud, but I digress.) We ordered a kani salad and 4 rolls: the love roll, the celebration (?) roll, a spicy salmon, and a salmon avocado. The fish was very fresh, and the portions were generous. The food here is consistently satisfying. It is conveniently located in Soho has lots of food options and am always happy when I go there. Whether lunch or dinner, the meals and sushi are both great. One of the worst places I've been. Couldn't even get plain udon to have a semblance of taste. Rolls were awful - you can't go wrong with spicy tuna rolls at most places but this place produced a lukewarm version with a weird taste I've never had. Salmon and chicken teriyaki was flavorless. The open doors that opened out to Mott was cool, but we then noticed on our way out that the nyc health department inspection rating was a "C" -- didn't see it on the way in because it was on the door that was folded in and wasn't visible until your way out. After a long morning of walking up and down the back streets of Soho, my hankering for a sushi lunch was sated by the discovery of this unassuming little place. The ambiance is nothing to write home about, and I was slightly turned off by the enormous "Time Out 100" sign they've unabashedly placed in their window to woo passers-by, but the food was excellent. I got (and have returned several times since to get) their 10$ sushi lunch special - the best bargain on the menu (roll + 6 sushi). The fish was extremely fresh, and terrace seating on Mott St. is unbeatable when the sun is shining. I wouldn't go out of my way to dine here, but as far as casual shopping breaks go, Mottsu's pretty sublime. read more

As a vegetarian I really loved this place because the waitress was very nice and accommodating to making my entree vegetarian friendly. i went with my sister for lunch and we both got the lunch box and for $10 we got a great fresh dark green salad (not the usual lighter bad lettuce you expect from Japanese restaurants), delicious miso soup, and in the lunch box itself - a roll of avocado/cucumber sushi, bowl of sticky brown rice, 2 vegetable dumplings and your choice of teriyaki (I had the vegetable and it was amazing!) The portions were not huge (but that's actually a good thing) however, i left full due to the amount of courses served! I thought this was an excellent deal with great food and good service, my water glass was never empty!! read more

Tuna avocado roll..avocado was tasteless and tougher than biting through log.. eel cold and bony.. big staff that stands around staring at you like you like your going to shoplift. There was like one staff member for every customer but with the exception of two people I couldn't figure out what they were actually doing. Apparently people love this place, but as soon as I saw the B sanitation grade, I was turned off. Unfortunately, I was meeting with a group, so I had no choice but to stay and eat and pray that I wouldn't get food poisoning and die. Seriously. I will say that you get a good deal for your money. I stuck with cooked food: chicken teriyaki lunch box. My chicken was drenched in teriyaki sauce and mushrooms. I think I counted like 3 pieces of actual chicken and I probably had 5 full mushrooms in it. (I don't like mushrooms.) They did give a substantial amount of rice, the choice of a tuna or california roll, and shrimp shumai on the side, in addition to the miso soup and ginger salad. All of that for $11, which is a pretty good deal. They also accidentally gave me veggie dumplings instead of shrimp shumai, so they allowed me to keep the dumplings and gave me the shumai also for no charge. The dumplings were not good though- really processed and tasted like they were from a frozen bag. The best part of my meal was probably the tea. They have really really good hot tea. Don't know what it is, but it was pretty damn good. read more

Do not go to this restaurant !!! the food is ok but we experienced an aggressive behavior of the waiters on behalf of the owner. We ordered teriyaki sauce and they charged $ 2 (uncommon and without any notice at the menu). When we asked for the check we discovered that they forced us to pay 20% service claiming it's the owner's policy. They don't give you the option to give 15% tip for example. This place has great sushi. Note, I did not say 'greatest'. That honor/distinction is arguably between several other restaurants in the city... but overall Mottsu's sushi is very fresh, thus leading to some good sushi. (they serve other food, which I like, but sushi is the main draw here.) Not crowded so its nice to just walk in and get a good sushi meal. The waitstaff is very nice. Sit at the sushi bar and ask about any specials... they usually have some specials which can range from variations of your normal favorites (seared salmon) to some unique types of sushi (raw shrimp). I had lunch at Mottsu today and ordered the Salmon Teriyaki lunch box. There was hair in my salmon! I requested that they take the charge off of my bill and to my surprise, they refused! They insisted that my only option was to have them make me a new order. I didn't want a new order because I didn't want to wait for them to make it and quite frankly I was disgusted by the hair in my food and didn't want a new meal! When I asked to speak to the manager, I was told me they weren't there. Very poor customer service! I liked Mottsu, but after this experience I will not be returning. read more

I love this great sushi place! It's close to my office and has some of the freshest sushi in the city. It's small and intimate, and in the summer, customers can dine al-fresco. Great lunch box specials during the week and it's the perfect place to have good conversation and fresh sushi...and avoid the tourists that usually swarm the area. read more

Came in for dinner with my family and a friend the other night. The tables were full but the friendly waiter enticed us to stay and wait by giving us hot Green tea. The wait wasn't very long. The spacing of the tables and chairs is a bit crowded. I had a tonkotsu ramen. I must admit that I've had much better in Manila. But I particularly enjoyed the pork. The noodles were a bit undercooked. We also had an assorted sushi platter which tasted very fresh. I never got to try the SoHo roll. If I'd had the opportunity to visit the site that would be great but I got delivery so I'm trusting that everything would be alright on site. Honestly, I walked in here as in a hunger-fueled crabby mood. Since I know I was far less than pleasant to deal with, I feel like I owe it to them to yelp about Mottsu fondly. As soon as I was seated, I picked up that it wasn't authentic Japanese. When I was offered their menus, I didn't like that the dinner specials they offered were so bland and the actual condition of the menus were so gritty and tattered. You cannot believe how I was so ready to get out of there. But what really changed my mind was their congenial service and quality of food. My friend and I were offered two hot towels and warm tea as soon as we sat down. Our waiter and waitress were nothing short of helpful and cheerful especially when I expressed how hungry I was. They even warned me of ordering something that probably satiate my appetite. I got two rolls, a dragon roll and a spicy tuna roll (which I did not think would be enough for me) and my other got a chirashi bowl. Their sushi is very reasonably priced and portioned. It also tasted very fresh; there was not a hint of a fishy odor on my plate or in the restaurant. Nothing led me to believe it was a previously frozen carcass. We left out of there fulfilled and surprised. It's a sweetly simple romantic set-up in terms of seating and decor but the veryy worn condition of the menus could be a slight (very slight) buzzkill. I rate them more favorably if they had better specials especially for happy hour or early dinner. read more

My friend and I were wandering around in search of a good pizza place, and both hungry. All of them had long lines, and we found Mottsu. The food was very reasonably priced, and delicious. We ordered and within three minutes we had our food, all very fresh. They also accommodated very well to my allergy. The only problems were that the restaurant opened out to the street, which made it pretty noisy, and after we payed the check, they came up and asked us to give a tip, very rudely, and it made a slight scene. However, the food and service were good, definitely perfect for a twenty minute meal. read more
