Mountain Jack's provided a relatively quick, filling meal for me and my family on the way home from a trip to Chicago. It was A-OK, as my rating denotes. We were quickly seated in the restaurant, which looks a lot like a forest lodge with dark wood and fireplaces. I started with the tableside salad bar, intrigued by what exactly that was. This ended up being the waiter rolling a cart up to the table, on top of which was a platter with lots of cups filled with salad mix-ins. The tableside salad bar is a nice touch. Everyone can pick and choose what they want without leaving their seats. Continuing with the items Mountain Jack's seems to be known for, I chose the prime rib. This is listed as being "award winning," herb crusted and slow roasted overnight. And it was OK -- not the best and not the worst prime rib I've had. It was a little tougher in parts, but the spices on it worked well. The rest of my family generally enjoyed their meals. Mountain Jack's is a long time locally owned Lafayette tradition. It has been in operation for decades continuously in the same location. The interior and exterior of the building has remained unchanged. The menu remains unchanged except for rotating chef's specialties. They're known for their prime rib, and yes, it is tender and full of flavor. That's what we ordered. Another feature is a tableside salad bar. The sever makes up your side salad on the spot to order. I had the house dressing, a whipped vinaigrette that is incredible. We enjoyed everything! If you like your steak served in a classic steakhouse style, you will love Mountain Jack's. read more

This was a very disappointing experience. French onion soup had no flavor what so ever. It was covered with shoe string potatoes, of all things, and the cheese was not gruyere... Standard Prime Rib was ordered. It was stone cold, no flavor, and was extremely dry. I tasted one bite and was repulsed and did not eat another bite. The rice that accompanied this dish was outstanding, cooked to perfection. The waiter never asked how everything was, never came back except to take desert order. $101 dollars for a horrible experience. This is my 2nd review of Mountain Jack's Steakhouse this summer (June 1st, 2024). This restaurant consistently provides excellent food and service. William, our server, was friendly, accurate and efficient. It seems the four of us don't take advantage of the ample menu because we have developed favorites over the 40+ years we have been choosing Mountain Jack's our favorite restaurant. My wife and our friends go for the prime rib perfectly cooked to their individually preferred temperature, 1 rare, 1 medium rare, and one end cut. We all enjoyed the fresh salad prepared table-side. I almost always choose the whiskey peppercorn sirloin steak at a medium temperature. It was again excellent. In my opinion, they do not include as much sauce as in past years. This lean steak needs the sauce for a perfect bite. So, I asked for more sauce, which William quickly provided. I was a little shocked when I got the bill and realized they had charged me $3.99 for about two tablespoons of sauce. It's still one of my favorite restaurants, but I think I'll try to find a new favorite entree. read more

The atmosphere is old school American steakhouse, it's dark and serves classic dishes. I ended up having a cocktail and two appetizers, all were quite good. I dropped by for an early dinner and grabbed a seat at the bar to have a nice, 'romantic' dinner alone. *I'm not sure if I really had a choice with my seating.* The steak menu is pretty vast. Since I had steak the night before, I was debating between the Mahi tuna or pork chop. *When I was a kid, I was told to never order fish from a steakhouse, so I went with the pork chop for this visit.* Before starting, I went for the crabcake as my appetizer. The crab cakes were just ok. I think that I would have preferred them without the dill sauce because the sauce seemed to drown out the flavor of the crab cakes. My main course, the sweet and sour porks chop, was pretty fascinating. After dinner, I was presented with a tray of super-rich desserts, however, I was far too full from dinner to order a dessert. Looking back, I wish that I had skipped the crab cakes so I would have had more room for a dessert. The bartender, who also served as my waitress since I was at the bar, was very friendly and prompt. If im back in the Lafayette area, I would give Mountain Jack's a second try. I'll just be sure to wear a nicer shirt for my next visit. read more

Where do I start, I have never been to a steakhouse that books you at opening and doesn't even open a minute early knowing people usually get places a little earlier. But we thought, well they open at 4:30 (our reservation time) so we can't hold that against them. I felt like I was at a Walmart when someone on the inside unlocked the doors and just went back in. Felt that was weird, but ok, whatever. We walk up to the 2 girls at the hostess podium and the one girl looked at us weird. I said you're looking at us like we're not supposed to be here and she went to roll her eyes and she caught herself, I will give her that. We were the first ones there and they sat us at a table next to the bar. Would of loved to sit in the dining area, but again, let it go. We drove 1 1/2 hrs one way so im hoping at this point that the food is good after being greeted by the 2 unprofessionals at the door. Our waitress was sweet and professional. The bread was OK, but I'm stumped with the butter, I don't think it was butter. We got shrimp cocktail and it was very good. I had read reviews about the salad wheel, so that was a must for me. I was underwhelmed with the whole process, but it was a salad and the blue cheese was the thickest I've ever seen, but was good. My husband got the ceasar salad and all he could taste was the croutons. The dressing looked clear. So we banked on my prime rib and his Filet both Oscar style would make the 3hr drive round trip worth it BUT it didn't. I have never seen my hubby get a Filet that wasn't juicy. My prime rib was just OK, dry and not worth 37.00, that's for sure. The oscar style tasted horrible with the nasty sauce and the minced can crab, i had to scoop it off my plate. My hubby also got the au gratin potatoes because of all the good reviews on it, what the heck happened, they must of changed their recipe because they were horrible and he didn't finish them. Originally we were going to get dessert to bring home, but we figured just cut our losses and get back on the road for our long drive back home. I took 2 chewable tums before we left the restaurant and my husband ended up taking 2 on our way home. I'm very shocked this place has any good reviews, the only thing I would say was good was the shrimp cocktail. Do yourself a favor, don't waste your money and save yourself a stomach ache. Tried to get a booth tonight at 5 pm when they just opened and the hostess (1 of 3) took us to the bar with 10 empty booths in the main dining room. Love this place! My husband and I (so far) have only come here for our anniversaries. Just had our second visit, and I'm starting to rethink how often we need to visit. It can be missed driving by if you don't already know where it is. The inside has a very relaxing atmosphere. The workers there are VERY nice and informative. Our server, Kyle I think, was great! Very helpful. He recommended a sweet red wine for me to try, and I loved it! They have a table side salad bar so the server makes it right in front of you. Very fresh, high quality ingredients. We got the appetizer sampler, ribs, and porterhouse steak. Appetizers were delicious! Much better than my last visit. The asparagus and potatoes au gratin were delicious. I could eat a bucket of the potatoes! The ribs were almost fall off the bone, and the sauce was to die for. My husband loved his porterhouse. A small snag was that his steak was cooked to medium well, almost well done, instead of medium. Our server collected it right away, and got him a new steak cooked perfectly. Had supper there last week on a visit to Lafayette. Loved the salad and the cream of broccoli soup was the best I've had. The server and service were excellent, but the steak was a major disappointment. The New York Strip Steak tasted good on the first bite, but most of the cut had stringy white veins(?) tendons(?) , I don't know exactly what it was, throughout the steak. Whatever it's called, it made it too chewy to eat. I had to spit out several bites, then I finally gave up. I had heard they had good steaks, but this surely wasn't one of them. Coming from the Northwest, I expected a great tasting steak. I ordered the Porter house, advertised as a pound and a half. I asked for it medium rare smothered in onions and mushrooms. When it arrived, it had about five pieces of onion and about as many pieces of mushroom, and they were hiding a very charred piece of anemic meat. I started on the filet side and thought I had made a mistake. It was tough with almost no flavor. It became very evident that it was not medium rare. It was also not uniformly cut where it tapered to about half an inch on the end opposite the bone. It reminded me of the T-bones you get at Denny's for a steak and eggs breakfast, only not as flavorful. I was told it's expensive, it's the same price or maybe a couple of dollars more than the crap you get at the chain steak places my steak was the best I've had since moving here. The flavor was so deep and good. I had ordered Neil steak which was a New York strip I usually order a rib eye my favorite but this looked interesting. I'm so glad I did. Hub had the baked walleye and he said it was the best he had eaten in a long while. . We had drinks an appetizer and mains all for seventy-something. Sorry, I forgot and we brought home. I have never dined here until recently on a Saturday evening I tried to make reservations and realize it had to be done through the website and so I submitted it on a Saturday around 1 PM in the afternoon I called after they opened as I had not heard back only to find out that reservations are only taken the day prior luckily I called and was able to secure a reservation Upon arrival we had a brief wait prior to being seated the waiting area has seating and a huge unused fireplace when we were seated our table was on the edge of a main walking thorough fare as well as 6 feet away from either the kitchen or a busy area where orders are picked up and or dropped off the location of our table I thought would give us great service due to its proximity to the kitchen but I was wrong We actually sat at the table without water and without anyone greeting us after the hostess had seated us for over eight minutes Our waitress seemed very nice she did tell us she was bringing us bread but never brought it further she had no specials to share nor any opinion to give us about the menu never asked us if we had a special occasion we were celebrating or if this was our first time visit to the restaurant it was very matter-of-fact We both ordered the prime rib in two different cuts and both arrived lukewarm and overcooked it is definitely a hearty meal and generous in its portions as well as the size that a company at the pricing is very fair considering the area We did opt for the peanut butter pie and it ended up being more savory than sweet I have only heard great things about this place prior to dining here and was definitely disappointed read more

Having grown up in the area, I've always heard about Mountain Jacks. This week I finally got to try it for myself. Please note that I was not dining socially, but was at a work dinner which meant a private room and a fixed menu. Our work function had us located in the back in two long tables. There were about 40 of us total. The acoustics in the room were terrible, making it impossible to hear anyone who was not seated right next to you. I was thoroughly unimpressed with the food. Our fixed menu had four main courses to pick from, two types of steak, salmon, and chicken teriyaki. I chose the salmon. Being just a plain filet with a side of rice pilaf, it was the most plain, bland meal. None of the other entrees looked good either. Everything just looked so plain and bland! The meals also had appetizers to start. There were four types that were passed around and all that I had to choose from was a single stuffed mushroom. Whether the poor planning on how much appetizers should be served was the restaurant or what my company ordered, I'm not sure. We also had a side salad and choice of dessert. I didn't even bother with dessert and am glad I didn't because even dessert look bland and boring. The only thing decent I ate was the side salad. Decor is old and dated. I think this restaurant used to be a big deal about twenty years ago, but now it's just sad and old. I definitely wouldn't bother returning on my own. read more

The last time I came here was back in 1995. I can't believe the restaurant is still open. When you walk in, it still looks the same from what I remember back in the day. We were all super impressed! We've all had way more expensive meals that were not nearly as good as the food at Mountain Jack's. Started with a Mountain Man old-fashioned and a couple of soda/iced teas. The Mountain Man was very strong with great flavor. We all had the filet mignon, with a variety of toppings (Oscar Style, Sauteed Mushrooms, bernaise sauce. The filet was properly cooked for all of us and just melted in our mouths. It was so tender and so delicious. And because it was properly cooked, even the leftovers were delish. The meal began with a loaf of bread and butter. It was to die for. A few of us ordered the the salad which was served in a salad wheel, made to order table-side. This was so much fun. We were able to pick our own toppings from (carrots, cheese, cucumbers, croutons, mushrooms, tomatoes, banana peppers, red cabbage, to name a few of the items). Another of us ordered the french onion soup which was really good. Some of our sides were the green beans and au gratin potatoes. I see why some people ordered a double side of the au gratin. The cheesy, gooey potatoes were just heavenly! We were sadly too full for dessert, but they brought out a dessert cake/ice cream slice for one of our group who was celebrating their birthday and we had a few bites. It was also very good. Service was prompt, very friendly and attentive on refills. The ambience was nice and it was a lovely evening. We have found a new favorite steakhouse when we visit our son in Lafayette! And the price was $141 for 4 with one alcoholic beverage, which wasn't horrible. read more

It is extremely disappointing that we helped support this business long before and throughout COVID. I once raved about this place but after recommending MJ's to several friends and out of town business colleagues only to hear about horrible customer service, I will longer visit this establishment. The front of house service and seeing the place slowly fall into disrepair is sad. Yesterday was the final straw. Just asking to be seated in the open reserved seats we requested I was greeted with attitude and poor service. The owner happened to be present and I asked to speak with him, he did quickly attend to the situation. Unfortunately his wife decided to comment on and defend the hostesses rude behavior. I don't even think she fully heard the interaction. I decided we would leave and walking to our truck the owner yelled for me repeatedly. I really didn't want a public display but he persisted. I explained if his wife hadn't butted in things would be different and I also explained many people I had recently recommended were very unhappy and I was sure he could see the business decline. I was frustrated but professional. He repeatedly called me angry and stated business was improving year over year. I would hope so after COVID. He did offer to pay for our meal if I'd come in. Again unfortunately this had gone too far and I declined. Due to this being a progressively decline in dining experience we will never return nor recommend Mountain Jacks. read more
