A blast from the past! I forgot this place still existed. They used to one in cleveland Ohio area. Went as a kid and this location reminds me of old school, regional, middle of the road steakhouses. Kind of like an equivalent version of Outback, Tx roadhouse, etc but from circa 1980-1995. But don't take this a dig on Mountain Jacks. I like it.its old school. Not blue hair old school, just old school. Food: App: had hot/spicy shrimp.... Very good. Just enough for a small app. Garlic bread/toast on side is nice touch to soak up the Cajun butter sauce. Everyone gets a loaf of bread and honey butter. You can tell they bake the bread in house. It's a pumpernickel and not bad at all. Salad: had Caesar salad which was fine. Nothing over the top. Croutons crumbled to dust but just may have been bad bunch. Dressing was ok. They do table side salad, which I saw but opted out of. Next time, I will. Looked much better and people seem to enjoy it. Main: Small/petite cut (10oz) of prime rib, med-rare. Cooked perfectly, good flavor. Not too much fat and good crust. Horseradish sauce is strong and good. It tasted homemade. Wasn't runny. Au jus was spot on. I would get this again. Maybe bigger cut with the bone. Sides: wild rice and green beans. Good. Fine. Would get again. Nothing exciting but their sides. Overall inside its rustic, lots of wood everywhere. Fireplace running. It's not modern or over the top fancy. It's just an old school steak/prime rib house that focuses on food and customer service. Not flashy, trendy, gimmicky ambience and menu option. You could do outback or lone star or roadhouse but for the same money, this is far superior. And you may actually enjoy your time at dinner vs feeling like you're at TGI Friday's (big Corp chain restaurants). read more

We have been fans of Mountain Jack's restaurant for many years and were looking forward to another great dining experience on the Sunday evening before Labor Day 2024. Our party of five placed our order for filet mignon and the scallop pasta. Unfortunately, we were disappointed beyond words by the quality of our food. The scallops were gritty, and the filets arrived undercooked (ordered medium well, but steaks arrived rare with raw, purple meat in the center.) They were sent back to the kitchen, and upon eating, found them to be extremely tough, and we even questioned among ourselves if the meat was sirloin rather than filets. I ended up taking my meat home to feed to my dog. To say that this was a tremendous disappointment is an understatement. I might add that our server appeared inexperienced, returning to our table to repeat our cocktail orders, but that can be overlooked if the food was edible. It just added to our terrible overall experience. What a shame. read more

My steak was cooked incorrectly had to get a new one. The rice was parboiled from the box rice. For the price I paid I expected much better. Would have been more satisfied with going to a chain steakhouse. read more

I never write reviews, but after trying this place for the first time and eating their 'Jack's Prime Rib" I can co dude you say this is the best tasting steak I've had in my life. I've ate a lot of steak from a lot of good restaurants all around the country and their prime rib takes the cake out of all. Try their crab stuffed mushrooms and house dessert too! read more

We have eaten here at least a half dozen times since my son's freshman year at Purdue. The steak is solid. The sides and appetizers are fine. There is nothing fancy about Mountain Jack's, but it beats the snot out of all the chains, and it makes my kid happy. Price is right, too. read more

There are few people in life that are perfectly suited for their job but Eric was awesome at not only patiently entertaining every question we had but also making terrific suggestions tailored to the unique personalities around the table. We spent a few hours at the restaurant huddled in a booth talking about our conference, life in general and enjoying the far more honest than anticipated conversations that the relaxing atmosphere encouraged. We had amazing tableside salads that Eric suggested and prepared for us. Friendly service, great attitude and he was on top of all our orders! The food was great, service was quick and all orders received were exactly as we hoped (medium, medium rare, etc.). Definitely worth a trip during your visit to the area. Our expectation was high, since all the reviews are good .....Reserved our table days ahead knowing will be some crows due to the town even that weekend. I had Maihei with onion strings and asparagus. The fish covered with too much bread crumbs, overpowered the flavor. Messed up the side order end up with a plate with messy asparagus. Husband ordered prime rib specified medium well, totally over cooked. Maybe I shouldn't order a fish dish in a steak house,but no excuse for the over cooked prime rib!! read more

Saw Mountain Jacks and was soo excited!! Brought me back to my childhood. Our family would go to Our local Mountain Jacks that is no longer opened, for very special occasions. This place gave me my love of fine dining as a kid. Come to find out this location is the last one left. Ok ...so on to the experience. Our server was great and very attentive. We ordered drinks that were very good. They didn't have a wine that we were familiar to but were given a nice recommendation of a red blend. We Ordered the combination appetizer with that was very good. We have Caesar salads. The dressing was yummy. We had prime rib with mixed vegetables and onion strings and the ribeye with asparagus and mashed potatoes. The ribeye was ordered medium, it was very flavorful and the sides were a perfect match. The prime rib was cooked at a medium temperature. It was perfect!!! So much flavor and Melted in my mouth. I closed my eyes and went on a journey! It took me back! They have always maintained that they were the best at Prime Rib....TRUTH!! Not only was the food great... the nostalgic feeling it gives if you have ever had the Mountain Jacks was worth every dime. The atmosphere is a bit dated. The steaks are very good and the price isn't bad. We really enjoy their table salad bar.

We decided to find a nice restaurant after visiting the Purdue campus and learning our son was accepted into the school. This was absolutely amazing and EVERYTHING we had from filets, chicken and salads were amazing. Hannah our server was amazing and very happy to celebrate with us. Since our so. Went for my birthday and was so glad we had reservations. They were so busy but the service was spot on. My brie stuffed filet mignon was melt in your mouth tender and cooked perfectly. We drove 1 1/2 hrs to try this place, the pictures of the steaks looked great. We got there a bit early and waited in the car as they hadn't unlocked the doors yet. When we walked in when they unlocked, the one hostess looked at us like we didn't belong there (definite attitude). My wife even asked if we weren't supposed to be there, even though we had reservations. We were the first people there, and they sat us all the way in the back next to the bar. (Not even the dining room). The waitress was there quickly and we ordered. The shrimp cocktail was really good. Unfortunately, that's where it ended. The salads came, my Caeser had no flavor. My wife got the largest cut of prime rib and I got the largest filet as we were both very hungry. We added Oscar on it as well. Disappointed to say the least. Both proteins were cooked the way we'd asked, but they were both very dry. The Oscar was made with canned minced crab. The Bernaise was mediocre at best. Also got 2 spears of asparagus that were overdone. The au gratin potatoes were just not good. Tasted like they were made yesterday. I can definitely say we won't be making that trip again. read more

Our waitress Amber was phenomenal. Always made sure our drinks were filled and brought anything that was needed. I had a filet that was supposed to be medium rare. Came to the table very rare. They took it back but just slapped it back on the grill instead of making me a new one and it came out burnt and way overdone. My mom also had a filet that was so tough she could barely eat it and was burnt and my dad had a porterhouse that was way undercooked as well. Got a 2nd one and that was raw. I had to wait a good hour to hour and a half to get my correct filet. The chef came out once to question my steak choice and how I wanted it cooked and was very, very rude. Not apologetic or showed any concern about how our steaks were cooked. Amber our waitress was very apologetic about everything and after about an hour and a half she saw I didn't have a steak and went back to figure out what was going on. My 2nd steak came out and was clearly raw. We had better steaks at outback the week before. Was a very lousy birthday dinner for me. Heard such great things about this place and it was nowhere near the standards it should've been. I'm giving it a 3 star. Which are for the waitress and not any of the food. read more

I can't get over how affordable this place is. For $25 I was able to get a 10 oz ribeye cooked a perfect medium, with a "Neil style" topping (hollandaise, bacon, blue cheese, sautéed onions, sautéed mushrooms). It came with two sides plus a salad. That's a lot of food for $25. And it was so delicious, far better than the more expensive fare at the numerous chain steakhouses in the area. It's a nice decor. Much more intimate and a bit more old fashioned than the nearby competition. Their bar is stocked with several fantastic bourbons, liquors and craft beer bottles. And I haven't even mentioned the great and polite service. All in all a great find that I'll be sure to revisit. And I still can't get over the fantastic price! read more

My wife loves the coconut shrimp here. I've found the steak to be mediocre, especially for the price. The pork chop is a better option and value. I do not feel that this place lives up to the hype, but the ambiance is nice for an occasional date and the food is good, just overpriced for how good it is. read more

So it is Friday night in Lafayette during Purdue Spring Commencement 2019 weekend. My husband had just received his master's and not being from the area or having spent much time here to know the ins and outs, we had no clue where to go eat with his family along for the event. We had passed by Mountain Jack's several times in the day before so we took to the Internet and decided this would be the place. We had no idea about reservations as we had no plan of what to do once commencement was over so when they asked at the front if we has reservations my heart dropped a little. I explained our predicament as they were, understandably, full but the manager at the front said she had no problems accommodating the four of us. What a lifesaver! I mean really a lifesaver when you are the in law of the family... We were treated to an OUTSTANDING meal with the lady's both choosing the Forest Mushroom Chicken and the men going with the stuffed sirloin and topped sirloin respectively. The meal was worth the price and a fitting way to celebrate the accomplishment of receiving a Purdue Master's degree, not to mention the distance we all traveled to be here. If I could give more the 5 stars I would. THANK YOU for your hospitality and service everyone at Mountain Jack's gave to a road weary but proud family! Huge fan of this place, and I always look forward to coming! Definitely expensive, but for the upscale environment and fantastic food quality it really isn't *that* expensive. That being said, it is always a treat for me to visit. Boyfriend and I always start with the crab stuffed mushrooms. I don't like mushrooms and never eat them, but I LOVE these. Each entree comes with a soup or salad. I love the Cesar, but the house salad is definitely what they are known for. They come around with a wheel of ingredients and you get to handpick what you want. Most dressings are made in-house. All soup is homemade, and they do a great job looking out for special diets. Now, for the entrees. I, unfortunately, am sensitive to red meat, so I cannot get steak. However, boyfriend and my mother RAVE about how perfect their steaks are. Boyfriend gets the New York Strip with bleu cheese crumbles. You can't go wrong with any side. I really like their pasta dishes - I've gotten seafood pasta and chicken parm. Went here for a small dinner as we were attending a party later that night. The decor seemed a little dark and dated, but the food was good. I ordered Sundried Tomato and Provolone Chicken while hubby got the Seafood Linguini. My meal was pretty good and hubby really liked his. Our server was attentive and we didn't have to wait to be seated as we got there a little early. There didn't seem to be much room in the parking lot even though the place wasn't crowded. One of the best, if not the best, steakhouses in Lafayette. I got the NY Strip Steak with Crab Legs on the side and broccoli and a loaded baked potato. A salad came with the meal, and it was on a regular sized plate. The salad was made right in front of us and our waiter topped it with whatever we wanted. With that being said, the portions are great. We had our own personal (booth) seating where we were able to eat and it felt like it was just us there. Which I liked. There was a long hair in our bread (disgusting), and while we had the apology of the waitress, no manager came to our table (which I would expect), and no consideration made on our bill. I did enjoy the table-side salad bar. The blue cheese dressing was great. There was only one waiter in the area we were seated, so it took awhile for us to receive service. He came by with water and asked if we had ever been there before. He went through how the entrees work. Entrees come with soup or salad, and 2 sides. However, the menu said it also comes with bread and garlic bread. We received warm, fresh out of the over bread, but we never received garlic bread like the menu stated. When we started ordering our food, we were prepared. We knew what sides we wanted, only to find out that pastas only come with a soup or salad, not the 2 sides. The waiter did not previously state this when he was going over the menu, and the menu itself was not clearly about that. On the back of the menu, it listed special entrees which include soup/salad, bread, garlic bread, and 2 sides. I ordered the chicken parm but the waiter stopped me and said that the pasta dishes don't come with all those sides. The menus should have been more clearly printed, especially if the chicken parm was printed under the sides. When the food came out, all 3 pasta dishes were lukewarm like they had been sitting there for awhile, waiting on the steak and chicken because those were both very warm. Overall, the food was good.
