So for years I've heard from coworkers about this place having good food and it always seems to be packed on the weekends so I finally made the trip over to check it out and I must say it did not live up to the hype. When first entering you can tell the place is in immediate need for some remodeling. It looks old and dark/dated but maybe that's the feel the owners want to be stuck in. I saw ceiling fans wobbling and squeaking, floors were very creaky and it had a mildew type smell in the back where we sat. Now on to the food. My wife had steak which was not seasoned and garlic mashed potatoes which were not hot. I had a slab of ribs which were decent, sauce was definitely different and sides were green beans that were flavorless and scalloped potatoes that also were lacking on the flavor tip. Maybe it was an off day for the flavor crew but I wouldn't return simply on the ambiance. Eat here at your own risk.

Excellent service, cozy ambiance, fabulous food. We especially enjoyed the salad bar options offered as our server prepared our salads at the table. Honestly didn't expect this restaurant to exceed our expectations, as it did, being situated amongst hotels and food chains. Highly recommend!

We had the best experience at this Mountain Jack's! We drove here, 3+ hours, out of pure nostalgia! As a child I remember my parents going to Mountain Jacks in Portage, Mi for so many of their special occasions! I got to tag along, since I was the much later born baby of our family - what a treat of the most amazing proportions that I had no idea at the time how blessed I was!! Fast forward at least two decades, I've recently lost the last of my parents , I'm doing some random google search one day and come across a Mountain Jacks, still in operation?! I was SHOCKED and oh so surprised, in the very best of ways! My husband started to plan a time when we could go together. He started by calling and speaking with the sweetest lady who is the owner of this location. He ordered a gift card for me as a surprise and she mailed it with a sweet, handwritten note. I was so delighted to see that piece of mail arrive with that very familiar Mountain Jack's logo!! We ended up planning a date night away and made our way down to Mountain Jack's on a recent Friday night in February. We didn't make any reservations and only had to wait about 10 minutes for the most lovely table! (We arrived around 7:30pm) You can head to the bar for a drink while you wait if you'd like! We ordered a couple of cocktails and soon the hostess came to take us to the most comfortable spot which was a cute half circle booth in the back! My husband and I both loved our spot for the night! Soon after being seated the most lovely waiter named Michael came - he was absolutely top notch the entire time evening! He had excellent suggestions and made just the right amount of very kind conversation throughout our meal! Couldn't have asked for better service! The first thing Michael brought us was a very perfect round loaf of fresh, hot bread with butter! Yum!! You know a meal is going to be good when it starts with hot bread! ;) We started by ordering the crab stuffed mushroom appetizer- delicious!! Great choice! Each entree comes with two sides AND soup or salad! My husband and I both ordered the salad and just like I remember from my childhood, it comes out on this huge circular platter and the waiter makes a personalized table-side salad for you! This is the most amazing concept! I love a salad bar, which it seems like no one has anymore, but this is even better than a salad bar! How could this get any better?! Homemade salad dressing choices!! Michael offered us a number of house made dressings! The ranch was delicious and this salad did not disappoint! I ordered the prime rib with au gratin potatoes and sautéed green beans. My husband ordered the Black and Bleu ribeye with mashed potatoes and asparagus. Both of our meals were ridiculously delicious but I have to say his ribeye was our favorite and I never order a ribeye steak!! ;) SO, SO good!! After our meals Michael brought out a dessert tray! I haven't seen this done in YEARS! I love a visual dessert tray and it worked! We ordered dessert, but probably wouldn't have had we not laid eyes on all of the glorious options!! I wanted a sampler platter dessert, but alas, I had to pick only one!! We landed on the mile high mud pie and it was - once again - over and above our expectations!! We sort of splurged on this experience - ordering an appetizer, multiple drinks, meals, dessert, etc... we don't do this very often. But when our bill arrived we were both shocked at the value! I'm not a numbers person, I don't add things up as I go - I was so pleased with the total cost, even after ordering every single thing I wanted!! GREAT PRICES!!! We drove all that way just for a meal at Mountain Jack's! It was worth every penny and we are already planning our next trip down! I would say we are foodies - a good meal with a good experience means a lot to me. One without the other can ruin the whole evening! Mountain Jack's is my new favorite spot - they hit the mark in every single area! Thank you for such a wonderful experience!! Can't wait to go back!!

Dessert first! Mississippi Mud Pie! Fantastic! Rich, creamy! Must get!

Great food, fab portions! Make a reservation! They were super packed and busy. The salad is great, comes with a selection of items you can add in your side salad. Loved the freshness and variety. The potato and bacon soup was also really nice. They are known for their prime rib and I split a standard cut and there was quite a generous portion. We also had a rare ribeye that we had to send back due to overcooked. The second ribeye was perfect and the slice was thicker, so it was a great seasoned ribeye. The calamari appetizer was thick cuts of breaded calamari on a bed of red cabbage, onion, and bell peppers, so not the usual calamari with a marinara sauce.

The food was good. If you get a salad, they come out with a salad wheel with at least 10 choices to add to your lettuce. It was pretty awesome. We had the appetizer sampler which included stuffed mushrooms, buffalo shrimp and potato skins. All of which was delicious. I had the Prime rib, since that's what they are know for and it didn't disappoint but i will say stayaway from the au gratin potatoes (not good). They only thing that I was really disappointed with is my drink. It was the Swet Tart martini. Good in flavor but extremely weak in alcohol. It was a martini drink but literally tasted like juice. The service was ok. It was only my table and someone at the bar in the section yet service was a bit slow for me but not bad . Just slow. If you are on a date night, it had just the right amount of ambiance. I would go back if im in the area.

This place is fantastic. I'd never been and went with colleagues for a casual dinner, one of us was craving a steak. I'm so glad we went and can't believe I've been sleeping on this place the whole time I've lived here. Our service was excellent and answered a few questions we had about the menu. We ordered the crab stuffed mushrooms to start and they were delicious. The table side salad might have been one of my favorite dining things ever! I love a good salad and the fact that they had sunflower seeds in the options was awesome. My steak was cooked perfectly. I was really happy with my side selections: rice pilaf and au gratin potatoes. I'd order them again in a heartbeat. The turtle cheesecake was a shared dessert and I was so pleased at the excellent texture. It managed to be lighter than most of the heavy commercialized recipes you find elsewhere. All in all, a great spot. Looking forward to my next visit.

We were celebrating our anniversary so it was a special night for us. Our waitress was super but stretched thin so she wasn't as attentive as she probably was on another night. This is a very upscale place. Decor and service reflect that. Good old fashioned steakhouse vibe. Oysters Rockafeller were perfect. Bread was fresh and absolutely delicious. He had American Wagyu Ribeye. I had Steak Oscar. Both were cooked appropriately. Maybe slightly under seasoned as we both added salt which is not typical for us. The Old Fashioned was really good and they had a wide selection of wine/beer and a handful of specialty cocktails. Our 2nd round of drinks was comped due to slow service at the bar and dessert was on the house for our anniversary which we really appreciated. We will definitely go back and try other things on the menu. Our steaks were good but I wouldn't say they were worth the price. $110 for his and $80ish for my Oscar. It was a filet with truffled hollandaise sauce and a scant amount of King Crab. They no longer serve King Crab due to the cost. Strange. If we would pay $110 for a steak why wouldn't we pay for King Crab due but that was a minor detail. I wouldn't say have preferred more crab...give me snow crab. The dessert was delightful. Baked Alaska served table side with plenty of rum. Thank you for making us feel valued and special!

Last time I got the lobster bisque and it may have been the best I've ever had. I ordered it again and it was terrible. Just terrible. Tasted kind of bitter and was much too dark for a lobster bisque. The side dishes are enormous and they were all ok. The charred broccoli is an entire stalk thrown on a grill. Char on outside, raw on inside. Lovely. My American Wagyu bone-in strip was good, though it tasted no different than prime meat and did cost $95. I would have hoped for better than just 'good'. Family enjoyed most items. I sampled the wedge and really liked that. Probably best part of the meal. Oysters were excellent. Drinks are always good here. They have upgraded their rum list and have some high quality ones now. That's great! Service is always top notch. I will definitely be back for happy hours. The food at this restaurant is good. But when 2 adults and 3 kids drop $800 on a meal, it really ought to be fantastic, not just good.

Once you walk in, you walk up to a counter place your order and they will call out your name on the order is ready for pick up. There is also a fully self service station for sauces as well as Takeaway boxes if you need them. The menu offers a lot of different combinations and samplers and meats from pork to chicken. The sides are also a little bit unique in the sense that the vegetable sides also have added bacon, which is great to see. I personally love to see hush puppies, which is a very antiquated and rare to find option for food. And they did not disappoint. Overall, I would say from the sampler of the ribs and the chicken were fantastic as well as the pulled pork. The brisket was OK, but did not necessarily stand out. We did try four different barbecue sauces, which were all fantastic. The hush puppies as I stated earlier were absolutely delicious and I would come back just for these. We also got the corn pudding, which was a little bit on the sweeter side, but made and baked fresh just like everything else here. And this was a great alternative to cornbread. To top it all off, the staff here was so super nice, especially the young man at the counter when you first walked in as he also offered up a sample of the corn pudding because I've never heard of corn pudding nor did I ever tried it and this was also my first visit. I would definitely come back here again, and/or visit any of their other locations closer to Indy.

It's been five and a half years since my last review, so I thought that an update is in order,…read moreparticularly since a few irritating things on recent visits cause me to lower the rating. The quality of the food remains high. The Americana burger that I spoke of in my previous review seems not to be on the menu any more, but several other burgers are, and they are quite good. My current favorite item, however, is the pork chop, which is huge (I get three meals out of it) and delicious. My wife continues to get her go-to item, the lobster mac and cheese, and speaks highly of it every time. (Not surprisingly, though, it has gone up in price since my previous review; it now costs $24.70 instead of $19. The pork chop is the same price.) The one menu item I tend to avoid is the french fries, which aren't as good as you would think they would be in a place like this. Now, about those irritating things. About a month ago my wife and I stopped by here in the late afternoon, about a quarter to five, and she of course ordered the lobster mac. The price on the lunch menu was the same as on the dinner menu, and so was (I think) the portion size, but at lunch you don't get a complimentary salad with your meal. Since we were about fifteen minutes away from the dinner-menu turnover (or so we were told; there was nothing in writing to alert the customer to this), you would have thought the restaurant would, in the name of good customer relations, have thrown in the stupid salad, but no, rules are rules. Then yesterday my wife and I ordered takeout. I placed the order on Red 7's website at around 2:30 PM. At this time, of course, the only menu showing online was the lunch menu. But when I indicated that I would like a 4:30 PM pickup, a dinner menu appeared. Not unreasonably, I took this as a sign that they were now offering the dinner menu at 4:30. I ordered my pork chop and my wife's lobster mac from the dinner menu, and the restaurant accepted my order and sent me a confirmation email. Then, about 4:15 PM, after my wife and I were already on the road to pick up the food (we live in West Lafayette, the restaurant is in Lafayette, about a 20 minute drive away), I got a phone call from the restaurant saying that the pork chop was only available at dinner and would not be ready until "around 5". So we had to turn around, drive home, and then leave again about 20 minutes later. I have no idea why Red 7 couldn't state explicitly when the dinner menu took effect, why they made the menu available and accepted my order when I placed it if it would not be in effect at the time of pickup, and why the restaurant felt the need to wait until fifteen minutes before I was supposed to pick up the food before telling me it wasn't going to be ready. Forwarned is forearmed, I suppose, and from now on, despite what the computer says, I won't be ordering dinner for any time earlier than 5 PM. But these annoying things are precisely the kind of thing that can detract from an otherwise good meal and leave the customer with a (no pun intended) bad taste in his mouth.

After we arrived and texted our location as requested, we then sat and waited in the car for more than five minutes, until I wound up going inside to get the order, which was just coming out of the kitchen. The order was, at least, completely accurate. The food was also quite good. I ordered the lemon garlic chicken (large size, 12 oz) and was impressed with the flavor and taste. My baked potato side order was quite possibly the largest baked potato I have had in recent memory, so large that I wound up saving more than half of it for future meals. It also comes with your choice of toppings, including bacon, green onion, cheese and sour cream. My wife's shrimp dinner was also good, though the shrimp-lobster chowder that she ordered as a premium side dish had a dearth of shrimp (two pieces in the entire bowl) and no actual lobster at all. Lots of potatoes and corn, though. The salads that we ordered with the meals were good; the ranch dressing that we got tasted homemade to me. And all meals, including takeout, come with a loaf of honey-wheat bread that was quite tasty. You'll get an email with a coupon good for a free appetizer, but it takes awhile for it to arrive.
