Considering this diner's average patron is 145-years-old and is located up in the boonies, it's truly not a bad stop. This was sustenance before, might I emphasize, a grueling and damp hike to Lake Serene, which actually didn't amount to shit because Mother Nature was a prude and covered everything in fog and mist and bullshit. First and foremost, I admired their rotating display that showcased a diverse array of creampies. You should've seen these pies that were brimming at the top with generous amounts of cream, as though it was ejected from a cream cannon. Why, that is practically the basis for most of my dirty dreams. But enough about me. The waitress was quite nice for a dreary July 4th who likely expected moronic, mouth-breathing city folk like us that day. She promptly sat us and robotically droned on about their holiday breakfast specials. The enthusiasm didn't go unnoticed. I opted to have their vegetarian omelette that came with a sizable amount of bread and potatoes on the side. This thing was incredibly underseasoned but I feel more forgiving (see: creampie display) with this diner as it's better to underdo it than overdo it with salt. Less is more, if you want to apply some old age, hippie adage. Harness good energies. Live. Love. Laugh. Hike. Rinse. Repeat. I'll need a redo of the aforementioned hike but next time I do, I wouldn't hesitate to stop by here. read more

Excellent place to stop on the way into the mountains for a day of hiking. It's packed and popular. I prefer simple food here, bu tthat's not always possible. I had a high hope for this diner based on other Yelpers' reviews. My boyfriend and I stopped at Mountain View Diner for breakfast. We ordered 2 cups of coffee, a veggie omelette with hash browns and a biscuit, and 2 orders of French toast. The coffee was pretty good and strong. I thought the omelette was not bad, but nothing spectacular. (It had WAY too much sour cream on top...) I did enjoy the crunchy crust on the hash browns, but everything else was simply put... meh. The biscuit was as big as my head, but it was pretty boring despite its impressive appearance. You'd need a lot of jam and butter to make something all white and bland like their biscuit taste good. Don't even get me started on their French toast! They used plain sandwich bread. Can you be more boring than that? The ladies who worked at the diner were the saving grace as they were friendly. The diner experience is typified by friendly service, bottomless coffee and greasy food. Since the best of diners and the worst of diners share 95% of the same menu it's difficult to say to the diner is defined by food. The appeal comes in the nuance of the rotating pie fridge, whether your waitresses name is Flo or Madge and and whether Flo/Madge call you honey or sugar. Server was blah, food was average and that intangible experience was pretty absent. Oh, and they charged me for a coffee because I brought in my own from the stand in the parking lot-maybe in Alabama but not a great policy in WA. The food is not bad, menu has plenty of options, mimosas were delicious! Now to the not so fun part...we arrived and waited to be seated well over 10 minutes and we (my dinner party) also watched more people come in and wait over 10 minutes to be seated. The customer service was good except that there were two older ladies working the morning rush and were struggling to keep up the pace. We waited for someone to take our menu for so long that people seated AFTER us got their order taken before us. The wait for the food was normal. They get 1 star because the pot roast was actually very good. The rest of the experience was a hot mess. First, it took 40 minutes to get our meal. It was 11:00 AM on a Monday, not exactly high business hours, they weren't all that busy, so there was no visible excuse for the delay. There were two of us and we didn't order anything unusual. A chicken sandwich and the special - pot roast. Onto the food. The chicken on the sandwich was probably 1/4" thick. The potato salad my husband ordered with it was about grocery store quality, though they say it's "homemade." My pot roast was excellent but was served lukewarm. The mashed potatoes were inedible. They were so watery I couldn't eat them. They somehow held their scoop shape, but tasted like nothing but water. I've never had anything like them before. I don't think they were instant because they had little lumps, but they tasted like very watery instant potatoes. I saw someone else's food go by and their toast was burned black. Ew. I had smelled it burning in the kitchen and figured it would get thrown out. Clearly their quality standards are very, very low. The desserts looked good, but after such a lackluster meal there was no way I was forking out more money for more mediocrity. Their prices are fairly high for what you get. They're pretty high even if you got decent quality. We left there happy that we weren't hungry any more, but that was the best we could say about it. At least we weren't hungry. The Mountain View Diner is a good find for those headed between the Seattle metro area and the Steven's Pass area. My wife and I have stopped here for both breakfast and dinner while making the trip to go skiing and hiking, and have not been disappointed. You won't find much healthy stuff, but you will find a large menu of great food to satisfy your appetite after a long day on the mountain. For breakfast, I had the biscuits and gravy, which was absolutely amazing---the biscuits were gigantic. My wife enjoyed the standard-issue pancakes, while a friend had a gigantic cinnamon roll. For dinner, I had the reuben while my wife had the CBLT, both of which were very good quality. There is nothing fancy here, but everything you would expect out of an excellent, local diner experience. read more

After a long hike and drive Mountainview Diner was pretty much God sent. They were open. They were very kind and everything on their menu sounded delicious. I ordered the liver and onions because I never see liver and onions on a menu anymore. It was made perfectly and the bacon on it was crisped to perfection. The pour a good mug of coffee as well. I was a very happy camper and now look forward to stopping here EVERY time we make our way out to the Gold Bar area. read more

Looks like a straight-up old school traditional diner from the outside. Similar on the inside. I love that about a place... Going inside, it is a typical diner setting. I slid up to the bar and ordered a coffee and perused the breakfast menu. Too many offerings I like at a joint like this, I finally settled on corned beef hash and eggs, a deliciously unhealthy offering. I hoped for amazing, but got something closer (if not) to canned. It was okay, but a little disappointing. Eggs fine, biscuit decent. Coffee average, but slow to come considering I was the only one at the counter. My husband and I have eaten here a few times on our way over and back from the mountains. Only had breakfast but it's excellent. I love their veggie omelette, lots of variety in the veggies (including broccoli and cauliflower). Made with egg whites and no cheese, with wheat toast, it's actually a nice healthy breakfast before spending some time in the mountains. This place has had many downs in the last few years.. Often there were ants running around the dining area, and not small ants, like full on carpenter ants that are the size of wasps. Bus boy took our drink orders but told me I had to wait for the waitress because he's underage unable to serve me alcohol while others got their drink I waited approximately 15 minutes and I decided I did not wait my drink anymore and told her that because i waited 15 mins now i don't want it. she said with an attitude that it wasn't that long and scoffed at me and gave me my drink. It's not busy in here at all either. I work in customer service and I know never talk back to guests and I would immediately apologize for the wait. But she had an attitude problem. I have been here a few times and it really is hit or miss. The only thing I like is the club sandwich with onion rings. My husband orders the chicken fried steak with fries. He said the chicken fried steak is good and the fries are pretty good if you order them crispy. The pies are good. My favorite is blackberry a la mode. The service is lacking unless it is Jamie. She is very personable and very attentive to making sure we have a good experience. The sad thing is we are locals so you would think all of the staff would show us consistent hospitality. read more

This spot is my go to. Big portions, delicious food, and at a great price!!! I have yet to try something here I haven't liked. From desserts to dinner. The pies and the fresh cinnamon rolls they make are to die for. And as good as the omelets and the French toast is I have to stick with my chicken fried steak. They make it crispy and slathered in gravy to perfection. My boyfriend tried the big bird sandwich and hasn't gotten anything else since. Seriously crispy and moist every time. NOT FOLLOWING COVID GUIDELINES. Ok food after we nuked it at home and left the cold stuff in the fridge for 24 hrs. Some members of my family got ok meals, some not. Workers, including cook, chose not to wear masks during COVID. Scary. Ew. Front of house lady gave me an obvious attitude while expressing they can choose not to wear masks, it's not a requirement, with obvious pride about it. Stopped by as an alternative to a place further along on Hwy 2 that was closed that day. Glad we did. I asked a local guy getting out of his car if the place was any good. He said, "you're not from around here are you?" I guess locals love it for other reasons too, but we thought the food was excellent and the service outstanding. Solid diner food. Fish and chips are pretty tasty (though the coleslaw is pretty heavy with mayo), and the meatloaf is ok. Breakfast is good with plenty of options, and the corned beef hash does not appear to come from a can (at least not Hormel), huge points there. The biggest surprise was the apple spice cake. Stopped 20 years...thought we would give it another try....just as nasty as it was then....husband had the "chief". Bisquits, gravy, eggs,etc...all piled together with yellowish gravy literally dumped over the top...maybe would have been OK if had been hot...it wasn't... I had senior corned beef hash...I think that they saved all the crispy left overs for me.... Pretty sad. Waitress dropped off the food never to be se again..except to ask if we wanted more water when she left the check.... I have been going to the Mt. View Diner for 4 yrs. The customer service is always friendly, as accomadating as possible and efficient. The place is always clean. The eggs Benedict is served on week ends only and the hollandaise sauce is homemade not out of a packet! A straight forward diner and a great place to meet up with friends. read more
