Solid Middle Eastern food but the service is the reason the stars are lacking a full 4/5. We went for dinner Thursday night. I got the lentil and bulghur salad, which was hearty and had a great taste. The crunchy fried onions sprinkled on top played of the lentils. Note it is a cold dish. I think I got the rahib but the texture, taste and appearance was similar to babaganoush so not sure if they messed up; either way it was delicious and a good-sized portion of creaminess and garlic/olive oil base. You get a GIANT, hot, round pita puff with the orders for dipping, which is pretty awesome. My husband got the ouzi, and the raisins, spices, chicken and rice all played off each other well. I think the pastry size was smaller than what either of us expected. The downsides: our Russian waitress was attentive and perky at first but then service slid downhill. She didn't bring our mint tea until after we had started tucking well into our food and only then because we reminded her. Our glasses of water were not refilled regularly. Never were we asked how our food was. Near the end of our meal, my husband wanted dessert and coffee but we were never asked and another waiter/worker? there hurried over with the check already! Seriously, if you don't want our money, tell us that when we walk in! My husband informed them of the mistake and he got his coffee and baklava. Moustache is a pleasant atmosphere type restaurant to dine at when in the West Village area. My friend and I originally wanted to eat at Little Owl right next door but since they had closed on accepting diners for the night, we ended up here. Seated at a table where the wind blew directly at us on a 20 degree night, we asked to move and the waitress kindly let us switch tables. Hummus with pita bread: so glad we ordered this last minute, it was delicious, hot, and fresh! I loved how the bread was served in a big bubble form so it looked like a blob! Pitzi: rice with chicken and a thin white sauce. The rice was somewhat dry and the sauce didn't do much for it. BBQ chicken pizza: now, this I'd come back for. We stumbled upon this place with an unassuming frontage and a small sign in the window. For lunch on a Sunday afternoon, we had something called "Foul", which it was not. It was a bit like a pico de gallo with beans in it. It was fine with a fresh flavor. Also ordered was a couple loaves of pita, whole wheat and fresh outta the oven. Albeit crisp, it was a fine accompaniment to the salad course. Next up at bat...a couple of falafel sandwiches, tightly wrapped in deli paper and stuffed with lettuce, tomato, tahini, and a few of the lightest falafel I've ever had. Very tasty and perfect for a bite at lunchtime. We asked for and received a small dish of hot sauce. It tasted like harissa sauce, but was more like a thick paste. Nice and hot! Service was professional and attentive, and in no way intrusive in this small establishment. No credit cards accepted, which sent my other half out for an ATM machine. Good solid Middle Eastern food! All the food was again...delicious! If you like mint tea you must have it here, its soothing and subtly flavored. Even my husband who normally hates tea, likes this one! Service and ambiance is still the same as I said in my previous review. Here is some more info on the food: Merguez Platter- we were so surprised by how good this was, you have to mix it with the salad and tahini sauce they give you....its excellent! Soooo we land at Newark Airport and my husband had been drooling over this place that he found close to where we are staying while flying from Bay Area CA. WOW what amazing food!! Great food at nice prices-no liquor but they have beer and wine. Love the Chicken kabob platter-big juicy chunks of perfectly seasoned breast meat serves on a bed of Puréed lentils with grilled tomato- clean and heathy. Please don't eat here. 20 years ago it was a gem with delicious, scrumptious food. Now? Yuck. The babaganoush was ok, the avocado salad bland, the garden salad with feta was a mess and barely dressed. But the absolute worst was the lahambajin. It barely had any lamb, and was basically onion and tomatoes with cumin sprinkled on top. We did not complain. We just ordered some lamb kebabs, which were just ok. And the service? He could barely contain his dismissive condescension. And It all came to $100. We could afford it, but not the unpleasantness of the experience. It left a bad taste, literally and figuratively. Really fresh and delicious Middle Eastern fare in an authentic and charming restaurant! We came here for dinner on a cold winter's day while exploring the West Village and had a great time! We ordered the hummus, labne and babaghanoush with their fresh baked pitas, the lamb pizza, chicken kebab plate and merguez plate to share between the 3 of us. It was more than enough! Everything was so flavorful and delicious...especially the lamb pizza! Their Cabernet Sauv from California was pretty good and paired well with the meal. Service was excellent...but we were only one of three parties in the whole place so I can't speak to a busier time. Quality, fresh, delicious middle-eastern food. I'd been meaning to try this place for a while, and popped in today to grab a quick lunch to go. The menu is simple enough: falafel, kabobs, lamb, etc. I ordered a merguez sandwich which I watched them prepare from scratch while my mouth watered. I suppose I didn't realize that this is definitely not the place to go if you're in a hurry - even the shirts worn by the staff say "Slow Food Specialists." But I can't fault them. Just standing in the colorful, friendly, and just Mediterranean enough surroundings definitely made me want to linger. When I finally got back to my desk, merguez wrap thingie was so perfect and yummy that I forgot all about the wait. Until I remembered, wrote this review, and knocked them off a star. I'm having to contact the NYC Department of Health after my dinner experience here. There were HUGE COCKROACHES running around the dining room floor while patrons ate their dinner. I alerted the waiter to the first one that I saw (size larger than a Leatherman knife), who then told the manager, who DID NOTHING. He didn't even come over to the table but instead gave me looks from the kitchen as in to say, "What do you want me to do about it?" (This was on Saturday night, May 10 at around 7-8pm) Deciding to stick it out because maybe that one roach was just the one roach, we didn't leave. Until, ANOTHER ROACH (we know it was different because of it's lighter color, same disgusting big size) ran across the floor under a neighboring patron's table. Again, the manager did absolutely nothing. At this point, we had to get up and go. If these roaches are running around on the floor, they're probably running around on the kitchen counters. The size of the roaches also told us that they are the flying type so God knows what kitchen surface or food they may have touched. If you've eaten here, I hope you don't get sick. The fact that the manager did nothing and could have cared less told us this happens often and they're not going to do anything to fix it. I'm calling 311 now to report this very serious issue as well as the owner of the restaurant to make sure he's aware of what happened. The restaurant should be shut down due to these unsanitary conditions. And that manager should be out of a job. read more

I've been to Moustache 2x in the past year and each time it was a great experience. I am fairly picky in Mediterranean cuisine and the food here is great! The servers are friendly, but definitely not overly. I've always had to wait for a table, but not too long. The dining area has the feel of dinner at a friend's house. The kitchen is open and the tables are limited. Be aware that in the winter/rain, there is almost absolutely NO waiting room. Overall, I definitely recommend Moustache for a small dinner with friends, a first date and take-out. Larger parties should go to an alternate location than Bedford. read more

I was beyond sad to learn that the one in the east village closed, but happy that the one in the West Village is still going strong!! My friend just bought a new convertable. Do people still drive in NYC? Did they ever? Well my friend really wanted to drive around, so I'll humor this time. We headed to the west village and this place popped up on Yelp. I think I'd been to the east village version a couple years ago. Wasn't hard grabbing a table, and the tabouli salad was excellent. The pizza's here are great thin crust delights, however they come as a surprise in a Middle Eastern restaurant. The baba and hummus were creamy and flavorful and went well as appetizers before a long night out drinking ourselves silly. I will say that the service was a little odd. Had dinner with a friend here the other night. The food was tasty but I couldn't enjoy my meal because it was so unbearably hot in the restaurant. Neither the A/C nor the ceiling fans were turned on. Did they really think leaving the door open would do enough to make their patrons comfortable when the humidity is hovering around 90%? Sorry, but I don't enjoy sweating through a meal. Also, the water was lukewarm. On hot days, please do your customers a favor and put some ice in your water pitchers! My friend and I enjoyed the deliciously creamy hummus, though the accompanying pita bread was wafer-thin and chalky. We shared a garden salad, which was fresh and peppery with large, juicy tomato slices and plenty of onions. We had barely made a dent in our appetizers when the server brought out our main dishes. He made no attempt to help us make room for the plates on the table by taking away the small plates we'd been using. He just set the main plates down and let us rearrange and consolidate plates on our own to make room. I had the falafel plate, with a generous portion of falafel, tahini and salad. The falafel was crispy and delicious, though far from the best I've had. At first, I thought they'd forgotten the tahini, which was buried under the salad and watered down because of it. All in all, the service left a lot to be desired. We were served promptly, even though the restaurant was quite busy, but neither our server nor the food runner so much as cracked a smile. Apart from the woman who greeted me when I walked in, the staff was curt and dismissive. Not a WORD from our server as he dropped our check on the table. A simple "Thank you" would have been nice! That said, the food was satisfying, if lackluster, and everything was reasonably priced. No, it's not a bear bar. This is a place where you can sample some cheap, delicious eats AND hear your Lebanese boyfriend speak Arabic to the wait staff. Now who doesn't fall in love with a foreign language...especially when heard over good food. Moustache is an Eastern Mediterranean slice of culinary heaven...right down to that slice of cheese filo pie. She only ate half of it, and the waitress warned that it is really hearty and filling! It didn't look like anything I've seen before. My other friend also got the Moustache Pitza, which is basically pizza with pita bread instead of... pizza dough. This is supposedly their oven-baked novelty. She seemed to really enjoy it, even though it really just looked like a regular ol' pizza to me. Another friend got the Chicken Kabab platter, and I felt bad for him because it looked so dinky. I'm sure it was delicious, but it looked really bare-bones... the pieces were so small, I'm sure he was also still hungry afterwards. The restaurant offers all the Middle eastern comfort foods...hummus, tabouleh, kebabs, but the popular and unique dish here seems to be the Lebanese pizza - served on a large pita style bread with your choice of lamb, seafood, chicken or veggies....we got the seafood and lamb (looked like finely grounded beef) - both good. The ouzi or chicken style burrito seemed to be 2nd most popular, but I was thoroughly jealous of the grilled baby lamb ribs my friends ordered and selfishly did not share. My friends enjoyed our wine and the backlava - skip the flan, which had a texture too much like plain yogurt. After an afternoon at a local theater, my sweetie and I - and two of our friends - had planned to have dinner together. We started with the usual array of mestizes - hummous, babaganoush, and a yogurt-based spread - all very good and a nice way to wake up the palate. Our actor friend went for what is apparently one of his favorites: a cheese-filled phyllo. The cheese filling was not as salty as saganaki can be - but the same marvelous tongue-pleasing texture. Our two friends shared a moustache pizza - fresh and fragrant. My sweetie had a craving for lamb and went for the lamb ribs. The other couple had a lamb and a chicken offering, and encouraged me to go for the ouzi. Oh I am so glad I did. The fragrant rice was like a Persian pilau, filling the phyllo without being sticky. The yogurt was not overwhelming, but paired beautifully with the lamb and added balance to the spices. It was such a treat. I have had a lamb/yogurt/pea/rice dish as done in other Central Asian countries, but to place it all in a phyllo pastry gave me new appreciation for the nuances of regional cooking. I am astonished at the reasonable prices and pleasurable dining experience - it's as if this restaurant magically transports itself to Astoria or Atlantic Avenue, instead of over-priced Manhattan.
