This has been my go to for xiao long bao! The skin is not thick, it doesn't break and enough soup. One of my favorite XLB place! We got the crabmeat and pork, both really good. Their other dishes are good as well. Their scallion pancake was very crispy and not too oily but wish there was a dipping sauce! I gave this place a second try recently even though I thought they were mediocre my first time. The xiao long baos just weren't as good as the nearby Shanghai lius but since lius xlbs went downhill, I didn't feel like I was losing anything with mr bun. Came here for family dinner on Sunday night 4/23. They are always a great solution for large parties. We came at 7:45pm for a party of 7 adults + 1 baby in high chair. I can't eat shrimp (half of us at the table that can't eat it and the rest can). There is lax service so you have to wave them over constantly for hot tea/cold water refill or request additional napkins. They don't bus the empty dishes until the end. We just stack them in the middle for more space. Okay at best, but will work in a pinch if you're really craving soup dumplings and just want anything that resembles a tasty soupy morsel. The amount of soup within the dumplings is decent, but the flavor was nothing to write home about. Pan fried udon here is fragrant, but seemed to lack flavor overall; the noodles, meats, and veggies all could've used a good pinch of salt or soy sauce. Hot and sour soup also lacked salt, and was a bit too cornstarchy for me. Fillings within the soup were decent. I tend to prefer hot and sour soups that use white pepper for spice instead of chili oil, so this one was far from my favorite. The beef fried rice cake dish is insanely addictive. Such gluten, chewy yumminess. And I always have enough for a second meal the next day, to get a double fix. The soup buns are great, but it's hard to get the proper experience through delivery. I'll still order, but it mainly turns into a wet mess as soon as I try to lift them. I still rate them so highly because they deliver to me in Dyker Heights, a ways away from their location, and because I find myself feening for their rice cakes. The store front is small compared to the large restaurant next to it so it is easy to miss but the front window is decorated with toys and anime figures so you might not even know you are looking at a restaurant if you glance at it. Inside has more anime figures and a wall mural dedicated to one piece. I have only ordered takeout from here twice since the pandemic and both times the food was delicious. They have a website you can order from (for those that do not like to order by phone like me) and will txt updates once food is ready. I am a big fan of the four happiness and the pan fried buns. Here are some dishes we ordered: - Hot and sour soup. 4/5 I love hot and sour soup so I had my expectations up but I've had better. This was more mild in flavor, but was still good. - Beef and tripe. 4/5. Wish it was a bit more spicy. The numbness builds up though but would be much better with an extra kick. - Pork soup dumplings. 5/5 skin is thin but structured enough to hold the juice in without being doughy. The soup inside is delicious. It's like an umami bomb in your mouth. - Crab and pork soup dumplings. 4.5/5 this one is slightly less salty than the pork flavored soup dumplings. Had a good crab flavor without the fishiness. I usually don't like crab flavored soup dumplings but this place did it well. - Scallion pancakes. 3/5. Lack of scallion flavor. Instead of getting our usual (pork soup dumplings & house special stir fried udon), we also ordered the spicy beef & tripe and hot and sour soup. The hot and sour soup was tasty and expected but the spicy beef & tripe was different in a good way. It's pretty spicy with a bit of numbing sensation after eating a few of it but it is still tolerable. This rating is a reflection of my in-person and my in-app experience. My family really likes Mr. Bun. We get a clean, pleasant eating environment--rather unusual for the Chinese restaurants in the area--and good Shanghainese food. My go-tos are always the scallion noodles, pork and crab soup dumplings, and occasionally some rice cake with stir fried beef dishes. One of the best, spacious, and popular Shanghai spots in Brooklyn 86th street Chinatown to go to. The only thing is it can get pretty pricy if you order a huge assortment of dishes together. Service is good if you go on a non-high traffic dining time. The most enjoyable parts while dining at this restaurant is the anime artwork they've installed on their walls, collections of figurines from Dragon Ball Z and Gundam at times. My most trusty place around from home when I need to fulfill my soup dumpling fix on those long work nights. Hot & Sour! I've not had a better Hot and Sour soup elsewhere in NYC. This isn't one of those soups where everything comes together simply. This soup is complicated! Sometimes the veggies are well beyand expiration and hard to chew, sometimes the soup base is missing the hot or sour, or sometimes it has neither, sometimes the soup just doesn't have the right viscosity, many times it's missing much of the crunchy wood ear mushrooms,... I could go on and on here. Mr Bun's got it perfect here. There are a ton of veggies and tofu, a mix of every addition in each bite, the soup isn't watery, the complexity in the soup base is wonderful with just a hint of sweetness to work with the hot and sour flavors. Mr Bun's Crispy Noodles are also similarly yummy. The thin egg noodles are super crunchy exactly as advertised. The soup base for the noodles are loaded with veggies and protein, a great accompaniment for soaking up by the crispy egg noodles. The soup dumplings are also a good order.
