I was really disappointed with my experience at Mr. Charles Chicken and Fish on Cambridge. The chicken was, without exaggeration, the saltiest chicken I've ever had in my life. It was overwhelming and honestly hard to enjoy. To make matters worse, no dipping sauce was offered at all--something that could have at least helped balance out the excessive salt. It felt like there was no attention to the overall taste or customer experience. On top of that, the wingets were extremely small--like they came from baby chickens. This is a local spot that's popular with an older demographic. The restaurant is not tiny but it is smaller and can get very crowded. The customer service left a lot to be desired. OMG, this place was so good. Nice atmosphere, music playing in the background was nice but allowed for conversation. Clean bathrooms and tables and servers that were friendly and clearly seasoned. The place run like a well oiled machine. The food, was amazing. The side salad to start was fresh and crisp and obviously not from a bag. Every order came with hush puppies that were slightly sweet (as hush puppies should be) and crunchy. Thank goodness you only get a few with your meal as I could have downed a plate of them by themselves. The coleslaw was delicious. There was literally one server for the entire restaurant. They did have a hiring sign in the front door. Maybe they should make it bigger or advertise on various places, as this was not sufficient . The server was very friendly, however, he was doing the impossible. It takes a very long time to get your order. It took over an hour and a half. To get my food order was placed at around 3 o'clock on a Friday. Do not come here on an empty stomach. The place is clean and well lit. The decor is very inspirational and motivational. In the music is a smooth R&B theme. The whiting and the fried chicken were good however, the greens have a lot of vinegar and we're not to my liking. The mac & cheese is homemade and the hush puppies were just OK. The yams were very sweet. The drinks are not strong at all. The price you pay does not match the price on the menu. They need to reprint their menus to reflect the price that you are charged. But after waiting so long to get my food, I was ready to go and willing to pay the additional dollars per each item. I've been craving fried fish lately and ended up here on a few different occasions. I tried the other location years ago but never returned. Again I wanted fish and they have catfish, flounder, whiting, etc. I ordered the lunch special with fish and potato wedges and it was perfect. The only reason I am giving a star is because Yelp requires it and our waitress did try to make things right for us. The place was pretty much empty when my family and I arrived, it took a while to be greeted and to be asked about our drink options. Wanted to tell my waitress about it, but she was nowhere to be found. Looked all around to get someone's attention. In looking around for help, EVERY SINGLE WAITRESS IN THE DINING ROOM WAS SITTING DOWN EATING PLATES! We barely ate our food. Went thirsty because our drinks weren't filled. By the time we were fed up, our waitress comes out to apologize and tell us she went on break. A break in the middle of an open check. Utterly absurd for a business to allow all of their wait staff to break/eat/drink while there are patrons in the establishment. She was very apologetic and offered a discount, which sure, is nice, but the service and atmosphere of this place has diminished so much overtime. Our cornbread was overly sweet like a cinnamon roll, fried fish was hard and extra fishy tasting, there were small white particles floating in my sons water, flies flying around, sticky floors and we also overheard a waitress (loudly) discussing her grievances with management requiring her to wear black socks and her issue with another waitress in front of the patrons. I cannot stress this enough: please check your bank account if the manager of this location claims to void any transactions and refund your money. I waited a few days to give this review to allow sufficient time for the credit owed to me to post to my account. This includes allowing a day for the federal holiday on Monday, February 19. Last Sunday, the 18th, I placed a to go order totaling $46.55. It wasn't until after I placed the order that I was told they'd run out of most of the sides I'd ordered and had limited options available. After consulting with one of my family members via phone, we decided to just cancel the orders and I would pick up dinner elsewhere that had what we wanted available. The only thing we decided to keep was an order of fish, no sides, to which the manager stated she would only charge me $4.50 ($4.68 including tax). What should should have been an easy refund for the difference turned into an ordeal. The manager seemed to have difficulty voiding out the items in their point-of-sale system. This was an immediate red flag. I asked for a hard copy of the receipt as proof of my refund. She kept trying to show me on the POS screen where she voided everything out and only charged me for the fish. I explained that was insufficient, I needed a copy of the receipt in case the refund didn't go through and I had to dispute the charge with my bank. Finally, she managed to print a copy. However, the receipt showed she refunded me in cash, not back to my card. Red flag number 2. After waiting all week and diligently checking my account, the refund she claimed she processed never posted, as I suspected it wouldn't. Unbeknownst to her, I work in banking and knew better to press to get a receipt and not take her word for it. I had to file a dispute with my bank and am in the process of hopefully getting it resolved. I say hopefully because I had to submit a copy of the receipt, which looks like she refunded me in cash but she didn't. For what it's worth, the food here is always good and we will likely continue to patronize the business. Just please do your due diligence and make sure they follow through with any refunds as promised. Side note to the manager who claimed their schedule hasn't changed. Yes, it has. We frequent this location all the time. She tried to imply I didn't know what I was talking about because, her words, "you're not a regular." Yes, I actually am. Just because you haven't seen me before doesn't negate the fact that yes, I am a regular customer. How else would I know your schedule has changed, and even the voicemail on the phone states their schedule has changed. Based on previous reviews, though, her lack of service isn't surprising. Also, the front of the house should be aware of what's available and not sell certain foods or sides when they're out. Let your customers know before ringing up orders so we can decide before paying for it and not have to fight to get our bank accounts refunded properly. read more

When I asked approximately how long it would take, she proceeded to roll her eyes (literally) as if to say, why must I be bothered. She had a stank attitude. I have never used that term but it seemed appropriate for her in that moment. I couldn't get over it. My grand was very surprised as well by this display. Anyway, our chicken arrived in less than 15 minutes, piping hot. The wingettes were larger than I expected and could have been cooked 3-5 minutes longer. In the car, I gobbled them because I was that hungry. On my next visit, yes, I will return, I will ask that they be fried a bit longer. I didn't have any sides but will try a couple the next time.
