I was really disappointed with my experience at Mr. Charles Chicken and Fish on Cambridge. The chicken was, without exaggeration, the saltiest chicken I've ever had in my life. It was overwhelming and honestly hard to enjoy. To make matters worse, no dipping sauce was offered at all--something that could have at least helped balance out the excessive salt. It felt like there was no attention to the overall taste or customer experience. On top of that, the wingets were extremely small--like they came from baby chickens. Came here for my besties birthday. Now the music is great however getting our seat's for a party of four was difficult. On Fridays they have a live Dj and do adult karaoke. I ordered the turkey wings, mac and cheese, and cabbage and collard mix. When my food arrived my turkey wings were cold and the rest of the food was only lukewarm‍ and their sanitation grade was only a 93. My espresso martini was average. With the amount of people that were there, I was surprised we were seated and served as quickly as we were. Mr. Charles Chicken and Fish used to be my absolute favorite place to eat. I especially loved the new Dalton Street location. However twice in a row they have let me down. Yesterday while we was there, we had a party of six and there were we got our table really quickly. We only had a 15 minute wait which that was rare and but we waited an hour before we order what we wanted it took us. We ordered drinks and it took almost half an hour for the drinks to come. They were literally rolling up the carpets for closing before we even got our food and it was very disappointed because I watch people that come in after us get served one man got his food and ate it and was gone before we even got our food. There was another table of four that was beside us and they got their food before we got so I've come to the conclusion that if you go there with the party of six they automatic gratuity so they really don't care about the service that they give you because they're gonna get their tip either way and very disappointing because we were there and we deserve to be seen and we deserve to get our things in atomic manner as well. The first time that they let me down was with the 6% gratuity I got my bill. This is a local spot that's popular with an older demographic. The restaurant is not tiny but it is smaller and can get very crowded. The customer service left a lot to be desired. The drinks were sugary and not really strong. They were served in very small cups. The food was just ok and the staff were unorganized. I just left this place, and trust me, I've always been a fan of a good soul food restaurant owned by people who look like me and seeing young kids working hard. The Mac and cheese was good and cheesy but the Yams was the best thing in the meal. The Yams were perfectly sweet and savory. To satisfy my sweet tooth we got the miniature sweet potato pies. To get my food order was placed at around 3 o'clock on a Friday. Do not come here on an empty stomach. The place is clean and well lit. The decor is very inspirational and motivational. In the music is a smooth R&B theme. The whiting and the fried chicken were good however, the greens have a lot of vinegar and we're not to my liking. The mac & cheese is homemade and the hush puppies were just OK. The yams were very sweet. The drinks are not strong at all. The price you pay does not match the price on the menu. They need to reprint their menus to reflect the price that you are charged. But after waiting so long to get my food, I was ready to go and willing to pay the additional dollars per each item. The only reason I am giving a star is because Yelp requires it and our waitress did try to make things right for us. The place was pretty much empty when my family and I arrived, it took a while to be greeted and to be asked about our drink options. When we finally received our food, my order (2 piece chicken and 2 piece fish - wing and leg) came out incorrectly. I received a leg and a thigh. Wanted to tell my waitress about it, but she was nowhere to be found. Looked all around to get someone's attention. We needed extra napkins, mustard, and our drinks refilled yet our waitress was nowhere to be found! In looking around for help, EVERY SINGLE WAITRESS IN THE DINING ROOM WAS SITTING DOWN EATING PLATES! We barely ate our food. Went thirsty because our drinks weren't filled. By the time we were fed up, our waitress comes out to apologize and tell us she went on break. A break in the middle of an open check. Utterly absurd for a business to allow all of their wait staff to break/eat/drink while there are patrons in the establishment. She was very apologetic and offered a discount, which sure, is nice, but the service and atmosphere of this place has diminished so much overtime. Our cornbread was overly sweet like a cinnamon roll, fried fish was hard and extra fishy tasting, there were small white particles floating in my sons water, flies flying around, sticky floors and we also overheard a waitress (loudly) discussing her grievances with management requiring her to wear black socks and her issue with another waitress in front of the patrons. I wouldn't recommend. There aren't many other "soul food" restaurants nearby that I could recommend but you might fare better by just googling your own recipes and frying your chicken at home versus giving this place your dime. read more
